died Monday Feb. 21 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. Born in Torrington April 10, 1938 daughter of Irene (Garodz) Stolfi of Torrington and the late Michael Stolfi. She was employed by The Sokol Club in Torrington and was an active volunteer for their Bingo.
In addition to her mother, she leaves three daughters, Leslie Walker, Amy Walker, and Heather Wilson all of Torrington and grandchildren Sarah, Chelsey, Brittany, Kenny, and Chaz. She also leaves a brother Joseph Stolfi of Torrington. She was predeceased by a brother Vincent Stolfi.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 8 PM at The Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Torrington. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

John M. Farkas, 74, formerly of Torcon Dr, Torrington
died Feb. 18, 2005 in Florida. He was the husband of the late Theresa (Sochon) Farkas. Born June15, 1930 in Torrington son of the late Michael and Sophie (Simonik) Farkas, he served in The US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by O&G for 33 years.
He is survived by his son John Farkas of Torrington and daughter Diane Kozlak and her husband Ed of Florida and 4 grandchildren He also leaves a brother Michael Farkas of Harwinton and a sister Eleanor Orie of Torrington.
Private Services with burial at New Saint Francis Cemetery are at the convenience of the family.

Charles Janssen, 71, of Springdale PA,
Charles Janssen, 71, of Springdale PA, died Friday Jan. 19 at his home following a long battle with cancer. Born in Torrington son of the late Louis B. and Marion (Fowler) Janssen he lived most of his life in the area.
He attended local schools, Waterbury State Technical College and was a graduate of the Connecticut State Police Academy. He was a veteran of The US Air Force. He retired from The Torrington Company with 39 years of service. He also spent 45 years with The Connecticut State Police as an Auxiliary Trooper and was recognized by The General assembly as well as The Governor for his services. He was also a Police Officer for the towns of Sharon and New Hartford. He was active in local sports and was playermanager for Dick's Restaurant Flag Football Team. Golf and The NY Giants were also a huge part of his life. He was a member and treasurer of The Torrington Company Foreman's Club, member of The CT State Police Academy Alumni Assoc., Sharon Fire Department, Northwest Rod and Gun Club and Springdale Pa Rod and Gun Club and Hill Top Golf League in Springdale. He is survived by his wife Saundra (Detman) Janssen of Springdale, three stepchildren,Denise Qureski of Boca Raton FL, Richard Stormont of Charlotte NC and Ranette Stormont of Brooklyn NY a brother Edward Janssen of Torrington and half sister Marjory Janssen of Saratoga NY, several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother Bernard Janssen.

Joseph Mackstutis Sr., 89, of New Hartford
Joseph Mackstutis Sr., 89, of New Hartford died January 19 2007 at Valerie Manor. Born in Torrington Aug. 30, 1917 son of the late Frank and Mary Scornalis Mackstutis, he served in the US Army during WWII. he was employed by The Anaconda American Brass Co and later worked at The Torrington Company. He was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by two daughters, Jean White and her husband Richard of Torrington and Mary Lou Cassidy and husband Robert of Naugatuck, and a son Joseph Macstutis Jr and his wife Donna of Ormand Beach FL, 5 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He also leaves a brother William Mackstutis and his wife Therese of Torrington, and was predeceased by brothers John and Edward.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday Jan 23 at 10:30 at Saint Francis Church in Torrington. Burial will be at New Saint Francis Cemetery. Nancy Jane Denson Smith, 83, of 1229 Winsted Rd. Torrington, formerly of Greenwich CT and Port Chester NY, died Friday January 19 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. Born in Greenwich March 1, 1923, daughter of the late Sidney F. R. Denson and Edith L. Niess Denson, she moved to Torrington in 1989. She previously worked at Outdoor Traders in Greenwich for 35 years
She leaves two sisters, Marion L. Weltz of Port Chester and Edith D. Behringer of Torrington. and is survived by four nieces, a nephew and their families with whom she shared a close relationship: John and Betsy Butts of Salem CT, Charles and Amy Berger of Winchester Center CT, Wayne and Emily Adams of North Granby CT, Barbara Weltz of Greenwich CT and Richard Weltz of Rome NY.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday January 23 at 1PM at Putnam Cemetery, 35 Parsonage Rd. Greenwich. Memorial contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, PO Box 4777, New York NY 10163.

Ellsworth "Bud" Werner, 82, of 87 Meadowbrook La Torrington
died Tuesday July 12 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the husband of Alice (Casey ) Werner. Born in Torrington January 18, 1923 son of the late Anthony and Elizabeth (Dupont) Werner, he served in The US Army as an MP during WWII.
He was employed as an accountant for The Hendey Machine Co in Torrington until it closed and was employed as ControllerSecretary at Hartford Special Machine in Simsbury for the last 35 years. He was a former member of Torrington Elks Lodge.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, William E. Werner of Boston MA., Christine Ward and her husband Jay of Troy NY, and Jane Steele and her husband John of New Hartford, grandchildren Eric and Alex Steele and Brendan Ward.
He was predeceased by his brother Rev. Kenneth C. Werner.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday July 15 at 11:00 AM at The Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave. Torrington. Burial will follow at Saint Peter Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service Friday from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.

Penelope J. Brown, 60, of Litchfield
died Sunday, July 10. She was the wife of the late George Brown. Born in Los Angeles CA November 8, 1944 she was daughter of the late Lt Col (USAF, Ret.) John O. and Doris B. Vick. She was raised in a military family and traveled the world. Penny attended high school in Naples, Italy and Houston TX and graduated from the University of Hartford with an AA degree in Fine Arts. She had lived in the Litchfield, Torrington, and Winsted area since 1978.
Penny was a self-employed artist who also loved cooking. She had worked for a time at the newspaper in Winsted.
She is survived by brothers Col. (USAF, Ret.) John R. Vick and his wife Sandra of DeBary FL, Randy N. Vick and his wife Terry Sue of San Antonio TX, and nieces Stephanie Vick, Kerry Vick, and Elizabeth Vick, and nephew Mackensie Vick, and Uncle Harry M. Vick of Santa Monica CA.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday July 15 at 1:00 PM at the Phalen Funeral Home. 285 Migeon Ave. Torrington.

Brian J. Crandall, 37, of New Hartford
died Sunday July 10 at his home. Born in Waterbury Sept. 16, 1967 son of Dorothy (Muckle) Crandall of New Hartford and the late James R. Crandall. He attended Prospect Schools and was a graduate of Wolcott High School, and was a 27 year resident of Prospect. He was employed as a mechanic and was an avid snow mobiler and collector of tractors, and was a former communicant of Saint Anthony's Church in Prospect.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three brothers, James Crandall of Wolcott, David Crandall of Prospect, and Garry Crandall of New Hartford, several aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews.

Frank R. Poniatoski, 83, of Torrington
Frank R. Poniatoski, 83, of Torrington died peacefully Thursday Jan. 25 at Haven Health Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Torrington Oct 10, 1923 he attended local schools and served his Country with honor in The US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer during WWII and The Korean War. After retiring from the Navy he was employed by The US Postal Service until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed his retirement caring for his garden, joining close friends at Teletrack and horse races, and sharing special times with his family.
He is survived by his sisters Ethel Locascio of Winsted and Joan Sterling of Jacksonville FL and many loving nieces and nephews. He was sadly recently predeceased by his sister Barbara Coscina.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday Jan. 31 at 11:00 AM at The Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Torrington. Burial will follow at New Saint Francis Cemetery.

Jeanne A. Farley
Jeanne A. Farley, passed away Friday Morning January 26, 2007. She was the wife of the late Daniel F. Farley. Born in Astoria NY August 23, 1931 daughter of the late Eugene and Helene O'Brien Sullivan, she attended Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in Queens NY and received her Associates Degree in Deaf Studies from Northwestern Connecticut Community College. She used those skills to become a teacher's aide interpreting for the hearing impaired in Torrington and Canton. One of Jeanne's greatest joys was working side by side for forty-nine years, with her husband Dan, at the Torrington Lumber Company.
She was a member of Saint Francis Mother's Club, a Scout Den Mother, and a member of the Vogel School PTO.
She leaves behind her children, Daniel and Lynn Farley, Donna Fabro and William Mastriano, Michael and Amy Farley, Janice and David Capolupo, James and Susan Farley, Eugene Farley, and Arnie and Lois Pittler. She also leaves a sister Patricia Lucke and a brother and sister in law, Charles and Dolly Sullivan of New Jersey. She was "Nanny "to sixteen and "Nanny-The-Great" to one. She was predeceased by her daughter Michele Pittler.

Jeremiah F. "Dermot" Carew, 74, of 311 Dennison Dr. Torrington
died Tuesday March 23 at Wolcott Hall. He was the husband of 44 years of Jane (Ryan) Carew. Born in Tipperary Ireland Feb. 3, 1930 son of the late Edmund and Mary Anne (Carroll) Carew, he immigrated to The US in 1953. He served in The US Army for 2 years, serving in Germany.
He was employed by Northeast Utilities for 30 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of Saint Francis Church and served as an usher there for many years. He was a former member of The Irish American Home in Glastonbury, and was a member of The Burville Fire Dept. He had a lifelong love of music that he shared every St. Patrick's day entertaining at local senior centers and nursing homes, where he became known as "Mr. Irish".
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Mary Anne Carew, Catherine Winzler and her husband Paul, Margaret Clavette and her husband Jim, of Torrington, Bridgid Molyneaux and her husband Mark of Centennial CO, and Maureen Regner and her husband Alan of New Hartford, and six granddaughters. He also leaves a brother Miceal Carew of Ireland, and two sisters, Kathleen Hogan of Ireland and Joan Symonaitis of DesMoines Iowa. He was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday March 27 at 10 AM from Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave. Torrington to Saint Francis Church for a Mass at 10:30. Burial will follow at Saint Peter Cemetery.

George Binette, Jr, 55, of 60 Wyoming Ave. Torrington
died Friday March 19 at Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of Jane (Magyar) Binette. Born in Torrington June 25, 1948 son of Mary (Lewandowski) Gnazzo of Torrington and the late George Binette Sr. he was Manufacturing Superintendent at Turner and Seymour Mfg Co in Torrington for 38 years.
An avid golfer, he enjoyed the company of family and friends.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, George Binette III of Terryville and Brian Binette of Unionville, a stepson, Paul Domaszewski and stepdaughter Jen Domaszewski of Torrington and six grandchildren. He also leaves a brother Raymond Binette of Torrington and two sisters, Dianne Media of South Carolina and Nona Swanson of Torrington.

Edward F. Higgins, Jr. 61
of 178 Darling St Torrington died Tuesday March 16 at home with his family after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Renate (Sveicers) Higgins.
He was born in Torrington May 14, 1942 son of the late Edward F. and Jean (Rebillard) Higgins. He graduated from Saint Francis School, Torrington High School Class of 1960, and he attended UCONN. He was employed as a senior cable repair technician for SNET for 30 years, retiring in 1991.
He was an active member of Torrington Elks Lodge and was an avid golfer, fisherman, and cook, and he enjoyed the outdoors. He was a former member of Egremont Country Club, and was a NASCAR fan for many years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael Higgins and Peter Higgins and his wife Julie, and two daughters, Christine Higgins, and Laurie Szabo and her husband Robert, all of Torrington. He also leaves three grandchildren, Emily and Robert Szabo and Cole Higgins, and a brother Christopher J Higgins and a sister J. Susan Higgins, all of Torrington. He was predeceased by a sister Joanne Higgins.

Born in Torrington April 27, 1936 daughter of the late John and Vina Mae Clinton Gath, she was formerly employed as a registered Nurse at Waterbury Hospital. She ls survived by her children, Robert Cardona and spouse Mary Ann Kleinfelter of Milford NH and John "Ricky" Cardona of Hartford, and Valerie Sabo and spouse Greg Tartaglino of Westfield MA, and grandchildren Melissa, Heather, and Ashley Sabo.

William A. Bierce, 82, of 122 Winthrop St. Torrington
William A. Bierce, 82, of 122 Winthrop St. Torrington died Thursday Nov 15, 2007 at his home. Born in Torrington Nov. 19,1924 son of the late Earle. A. Bierc and Erma T. Atkins, he resided in Torrington all of his life with his wife of 61 years, Anne Cunningham Bierce. He was a graduate of Torrington High Class of 1942, and served in The US Navy during WWII. He was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford for 35 years.
An active member of Torrington Lodge of Elks, He was a Life Member, Past Exalted Ruler,
Past Treasurer, and a former Elk of the Year. He served on many committees throughout the years and was also a member of their bowling league.
Family was important to Bill, in addition to his supportive wife, he leaves his daughter Mary Ann Bisson and her husband Brian of Prospect, and son Bill Bierce Jr and his wife Denise Longobucco-Bierce of Willington, and 3 grandchildren Codi Catherine-Amanda Bierce and Brett and Colin Bisson.

Michael J. Gallo, 88,
Michael J. Gallo, 88, died peacefully at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Nov. 11, 2007. Born in Torrington Sept. 2, 1919 son of the late John and Mishanka Sida Gallo. At a very early age, he and his parents moved to Slovakia where he attended school. Afterwards he worked on the family farm. During World War Two, Mr. Gallo and many fellow citizens banded together to assist the partisans who fought against enemy troops. They also aided runaway prisoners of war and other war victims who were being pursued and persecuted. Several years after the war ended, he returned to the U.S. and worked briefly in Bridgeport and then moved to Torrington. He was employed at Seth Thomas in Thomaston and then the Torrington Com retiring in 1984. Mr. Gallo was a devout Christian who never refused to help others and was willing to go an extra mile for anyone. For many summer seasons he sang with the Litchfield County Choral Union at the Yale Music School in Norfolk and also with Yankee Chorale and with The Silver Belles and Beaux of the Sullivan Senior Center. He is survived by his nephew, Jan Sulko of Slovakia. A prayer will be held on Thursday, November 15, at 10 o'clock at the Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Torrington. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the donors choice.

Linda Ann Baca Colapietro, 62, of Nanni Dr Winsted
Linda Ann Baca Colapietro, 62, of Nanni Dr Winsted died Dec. 18, 2007 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. She was the wife of Ralph "Butch" Colapietro. Born in Torrington Nov 4, 1945 daughter of the late Michael and Catherine Baier Baca, she was a caregiver for Charter Oak Services. Compassionate and loving, she loved helping the elderly, and will be missed and forever in our hearts.
In addition to her husband, she leaves two daughters, Susan Buslewicz of Winchester and Wendy Moreau of Torrington, sisters Andrea Williams of Haddam, Sandra Petkus of Woodbury, Barbara Woolsey of Florida, and brothers Michael Baca of Colchester and Andrew Baca of Torrington, and a cousin Ron Spiegelhalter of Bridgeport. She was predeceased by a daughter Catherine Moreau.

Marie Elizabeth Fischer, 103,
Marie Elizabeth Fischer, 103, formerly of Philadelphia, PA passed away December 11, 2007 in Torrington, CT. She was the wife of the late Harvey Fischer. She was born in Hungary on December 8,1904. She moved to the United States in 1912 where she resided in Philadelphia and became an American citizen. She was professionally trained as an insurance representative, stylist and culinary expert. After retirement, she became a home care assistant until well into her eighties. She was a hospital volunteer and an active member of the Episcopal Church, Phila. Republican Party and Yardley Garden Club. Marie had a life long love of Broadway theatre, classical music and gourmet cooking, which she eagerly shared with family and friends.
She is survived by her only daughter, Mitzi Missimer White; only granddaughter, Randall Simko and two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Afton Simko. She is also survived by close cousin Lena Uhrin along with other cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday Dec. 15 at 1:00 pm at Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Torrington, CT.

Elizabeth “Betty” Yanok, 79, of Torrington
Elizabeth “Betty” Yanok, 79, of Torrington died Dec. 5, 2007 at the Marathon Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Andrew E. Yanok. Born in Torrington, March 14, 1928, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Haburay Krisak. Betty was a life long resident of Torrington and graduated from Torrington High School in 1945.
Betty is survived by seven children, Barbara Yanok of Plainville, Peter Yanok and his wife Karen of Torrington, Carole Zemliauskas of Torrington, Lori Burdick and her husband Gary of West Simsbury, Mimi Farkas of Pleasant Valley, Patti Adkins and her husband Brad of Litchfield, and Robert Yanok of Torrington, and grandchildren, Dan and Derek Yanok, Stacey and Brendan Burdick, Brett, Jay, Amy and Andrew Farkas, Brian and Dale Becker, David Marcantonio, Jim Yanok and Jonathon Valente. She also leaves her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Andy Gardiner, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10:30 AM at Phalen Funeral Home, 285 Migeon Ave., Torrington. Burial will follow at New St. Francis Cemetery. Josephine Cianciolo, 81, of 431 New Harwinton Rd in Torrington
died Friday May 7 at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. She was the wife of the late August J. Cianciolo who died in 1997. She was born in East Lyme, CT May 23, 1922 daughter of the late Anthony and Angelina (Rovagna) Maggiorotto, and attended Torrington schools and was a graduate of Torrington High School.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula Pfrommer of Woodbury and a nephew Charles Maggiorotto of Saint Louis Missouri.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday May 10 at 10:30 AM at The Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave. Torrington. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30.
Memorial Contributions can be made to a Charity of the Donor's choice.

Samuel Russo, 78, of 35 Birdsview Ave. New Hartford,
died Sunday May 2 at UCONN Health Center. He was the husband of Marguerite "Peg" (Machuga) Russo. Born in Pittsfield MA, Nov 2, 1925, son of the late Antonio Russo and Frieda Russo Litke, he served in the US Navy during WWII.
He was employed by Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford for 35 years before his retirement in 1986. He later worked for Maple Glenn in Canton for 10 years.
An avid golfer, he also was a member of Torrington Arcade Lanes Duckpin Leagues, and he was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Terrance Russo and his wife Lisa of Torrington and a daughter Mary Ellen Liseno and her husband Joseph of South Deerfield MA, and grandchildren Andrew and Lea Russo. He also leaves a brother Orlando Russo and sister Margaret Arnista of Torrington, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday May 4 at 10 AM at Immaculate Conception Church in New Hartford. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Torrington. Friends may call at the Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Torrington on Monday from 6 to 8 PM.
