James J. "Jimmy" Brennan
February 7, 1933
November 27, 2007
PORTLAND - James J. (Jimmy) Brennan passed away on November 27 in Charleston, South Carolina while he and his wife Beverly were on a Thanksgiving holiday, spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Jimmy was born in Portland on February 7, 1933, the fourth of eight children of Irish immigrant parents, John J. Brennan and Catherine Mulkern Brennan.
He married Beverly Niles at St. Mary’s Church, Bath, ME. on February 27, 1960.
Jimmy took great pride in his humble beginnings, growing up in the Munjoy Hill section of Portland, which was home for many, especially large ethnic families. He loved to take his grandchildren to show them his old house on the street where he lived.
For over 40 years, he operated parking facilities, mostly in the heart of Portland around Monument Square, where he made friends with hundreds of his customers from all walks of life.
He actively supported many political candidates, most recently Governor John Baldacci in his bid for reelection. He would proudly post very large signs of the political candidate of his choice at his business locations despite advice by some colleagues that it may turn away customers who supported other candidates. His choices were always Democratic candidates with one exception: his longtime friend who was a Republican, the late Portland mayor, Edward I. Bernstein.
He discussed current events and the stock market several times a day with his brother Francis.
Governor John Baldacci stated, “I’ve lost a great and loyal friend. Jimmy was like family. Jimmy loved Portland and understood the city as well as anyone I’ve ever met.”
Former Maine Senate President Gerard P. Conley said, “Jimmy has been truly a special friend of mine for more than 45 years. I will miss him deeply.”
His brother, former Maine Governor Joseph Brennan, said, “Jimmy was really special and helpful in many ways. For example, he would call me at the Governor’s Office and say, ‘Joey, I don’t care what all those “yes” men around you in the Governor’s Office are telling you. This is what the people on the street are saying.’ Many times his observations proved to be right on the mark.”
He was predeceased by a brother John J. Brennan, Jr. in 1998.
Besides his wife Beverly of 47 years, he is survived by his daughter Maureen Paul and her husband Jim, their children Derek and Courtney of Summerville, South Carolina; his daughter, Patricia Ferran and her husband Dan and their daughter Meghan of Ellicott City, Maryland; his sisters Mary Toker of Bethesda, Maryland, Kathleen Brennan of Portland, and Sister Barbara of the Sisters of Mercy of Portland; his brothers Francis Brennan of Portland, Joseph Brennan and his wife Connie of Portland, and Paul Brennan of Portland; his mother-in-law, Mattie McLaughlin of Royal Palm, FL., his sister-in-law, Merrylyn Brennan of Pass Christian, Missippi and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, December 2nd at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. A 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, December 3rd at St. Patrick’s Church, 1342 Congress Street, Portland.

Lorraine McFarland Dow
October 19, 1925
November 16, 2007
Lorraine McFarland Dow, of Cape Elizabeth, went peacefully to God while staying at the home of her daughter on November 16th, 2007 following a courageous battle with cancer. A truly beloved mother and grandmother, Lorraine was the perfect picture of strength and grace, and an individual who touched the life of each person she met.
Born in Portland, ME on October 19th 1925 to her parents John Michael McFarland and Marie Twomey McFarland, Lorraine attended St. Dominic’s School and was a graduate of Portland High School in 1943. She was the oldest of four children, and was very close to her siblings Dorothy McFarland Bickford, John McFarland, and David McFarland. An active USO volunteer, she married her sweetheart Ralph Arden Dow on August 30th, 1945 upon his return from Naval service in World War II. During her high school years and early part of her marriage, she worked at Porteous, Mitchell, and Braun in Portland. Along with her husband Ralph, she then moved to Bridgeport, CT where both her children Gary Ralph and Linda Marie were born.
Following the unexpected death of her husband in 1965, she returned to Maine to be with her family and bought her home in Cape Elizabeth where she has resided for the past 41 years. In 1972 she began her career at Maine Medical Center in the original Cancer Registry for the state of Maine, where she worked until her retirement in 1992.
Lorraine loved her children and granddaughters deeply, and took great pride in each of their accomplishments. Her spirit was both generous and strong, as she raised her children independently, never remarrying after being widowed at a very early age. Her gentle nature remained intact until the end of her life, and she was a true inspiration to those around her as she never complained throughout her illness and remained entirely positive each day. This was her second battle with cancer, having already fought and beaten the disease in 1995.
In turn, her children and granddaughters are forever grateful for every moment they spent with such a wonderful, loving woman, and the gift of her spirit will remain with them forever.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to: Matthew Dugan, D.O., Julie Baither, ARNP, and the entire staff of the Maine Cancer Center, as well as the VNA Hospice team.
Lorraine will always be deeply loved and remembered by her entire family, especially her beloved son Gary Ralph Dow and daughter-in-law Lisa Dow of Charleston, SC, as well as beloved daughter Linda Marie Dow Morrell of Falmouth, ME and adoring granddaughters Rebecca Marie Morrell, Sarah Ann Morrell, and Rachel Hannah Morrell. Also surviving are her sister Dorothy McFarland Bickford and husband Leonard Bickford of Casco, ME; brother John McFarland, Jr. and wife Barbara McFarland of Portland, ME; brother David McFarland of Shrewsbury, MA, and her many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2007 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, November 20th at the chapel, followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bartholomew Church, 8 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lorraine’s memory may be made to: American Cancer Society, New England Div., Inc., One Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, Maine 04086, or VNA Hospice of Maine, 50 Foden Road, South Portland, Maine 04106
