Dorris Woodward
Died On October 5, 2001
Dorris W. Woodward, 88, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday night, October 5, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born September 14, 1913, in Canada, to J. N. Watt and Maude Phillips Watt. She married C. A. Woodward and he preceded her in death on April 13, 1971. Mrs. Woodward was born in Canada but was raised in Osceola, MO. She spent many years in Wyoming before returning to Nevada in 1970. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge. Survivors include a friend, Irvin Buske, Deerfield, MO, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, J. N. Watt and Jim Watt; and three sisters, Mildred, Nola, and Jennie Bryan. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2001, at Pleasant Mound Cemetery, Osceola, MO, with John Nichols officiating. Friends may call now and until 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Harold "Dink" Young
Died On May 31, 2001
Harold J. “Dink” Young, 80, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday morning, May 31, 2001, at his home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. Harold was born to George Clyde Young and Sarah Belle Martin Young in Nevada, MO, on February 26, 1921. He lived in and attended high school in Kansas City for a time. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1939. He married Phyllis Runyan in 1939 and they moved to San Diego, CA, where he was employed at Consolidated Aircraft before serving his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the 707 Tank Battalion and was in combat in Austria, Belgium, France, and Germany. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Returning to San Diego after the war, he was in the grocery business. At the time of his retirement in 1977, he was Director of Store Operations of Southern California for ElRancho Grocery chain. In 1978, he moved back to Nevada, owning and operating Hal’s Wine and Spirits. His wife, Phyllis, preceded him in death in 1980. Harold married Katherine Robertson Howard in 1982 who survives of the home. He is also survived by his four children, Carolyn Sue Potts, San Diego, CA; Sarilee Anderson, LaJolla, CA; Robert James Young, Waco, TX; and Julie Whelan, Carlsbad, CA; two stepdaughters, Teresa Howard Wolfe, Nevada, MO; and Katherine Howard, Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and three great- grandchildren; a sister, Mary Crabtree, Belton, MO, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, Phyllis, he was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers, Faye Van Dyke, Clyde LeRoy Young, Cecil Claude Young, Robert Orion Young, and Sarah Jane Huitt. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Food Industry Grocery Association, Elks Lodge, Coffee Club, Nevada Country Club, having served on it Board of Directors, United States Golf Association, and a 48 year member of the Silver Gate Three Stars Masonic Lodge No. 296, San Diego, CA. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with The Reverend Steve Barth officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Nevada Public Library or United Methodist Church in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

Edward Woodington
Died On October 19, 2001
Edward Albert Woodington, 73, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday morning, October 19, 2001, at Rt. 3, Nevada following an illness of several months. He was born May 28, 1928, in Kansas City, MO, to Edward E. Woodington and Vada May Payne Woodington. Mr. Woodington was born in Kansas City, but was raised in Nevada. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1946. He went to work for Nevada School System and worked there 41 years, retiring in 1987. He was a Baptist. He was a member of the Ottawa Indian tribe, and was a holder of the Golden Sun Award, the Silver Beaver Award, and the Eagle Scout. He worked in scouting for more than 40 years and was Chairman of the Clear Creek Pow Wow for 39 years. Survivors include one sister, Cowetta Ulrey, Quapaw, OK; one brother, Ed Riggs, Nevada, MO; three nephews, Cap Ulrey, Quapaw, OK, Travis Riggs, Nevada, MO, and Dale Lipe, Nevada, MO; and friend, Nancy Boyle, Milo, MO. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 22, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. There will be a Native American Wake and ritual from 12:00 noon on Sunday, October 21, until 9:00 a.m. on Monday at the Ed Woodington farm. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. Monday until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association., Nevada City Hospital, or the Parkinson’s Association in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

Willard Wolfe
Died On August 3, 2001
Willard L. Wolfe, 80, Nevada, MO passed away Friday evening, August 3, 2001 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. He was born June 6, 1921 in Moundville, MO to the late Elmer Wolfe and Blanche Schiebrel Wolfe. He was married November 16, 1946 in Ft.Scott, KS to Beulah Orr Wolfe who survives of the home. Mr. Wolfe entered the United States Army in 1942 and served on the Canada, Alaska border in the construction of the Al-Can Highway during WW II. After the war he moved to Deerfield, MO and farmed with his brother on the family farm until his retirement in 1987. He moved to Nevada, MO in 1989 and lived the remainder of his life here. He attended Clayton Christian Church, Eve, MO. He was a member of VFW post #1165, Ft. Scott, Kansas. Along with his wife, Beulah, survivors include two sisters, Ethel Mae Pettibon, El Dorado Springs, MO and Edith Dirks, Moundville, MO; seversal nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, three brothers, Earl, Everett and Huburt and one sister, Erma Parks preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2001, at Milster Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with Reverend Wes Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS with full military honors provided by VFW post #1165, Ft. Scott, Kansas.. Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Sunday and until the time of service at Milster Funeral Home, 301 W. James Witte
Died On July 2, 2001
James E. Witte, 74, Nevada, MO, passed away at his home in Nevada on Monday morning, July 2, 2001. He was born August 8, 1926, in Rich Hill, MO, to Julius Albert Witte and Inez Loraine Harris Witte. He married Bonnie Lucille Klumpp on April 8, 1951. She preceded him in death on August 8, 1993. Mr. Witte was a graduate of Rich Hill High School in 1945. He served in the Navy during WW II in the South Pacific. He and his wife owned and operated Nevada Bakery until 1973. Then they owned and operated Witte’s Package Liquors until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the VFW Post #2175, a 50-year member of Nevada Elks Lodge #564, Am Vets Post #131, Nevada Eagles Lodge #3770, American Legion Post #2, National Rifle Association, a former member of Vernon County Historical Society, and a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited and North American Hunting Club. Survivors include two sons, Jim Witte and wife, Lois, Sheldon, MO, and Mike Witte and wife, Carla, Nevada; one daughter, Judy Wesemann, Harrisonville, MO; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one sister, Jeanie Gipson, Grinnell, IA, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Bonnie, he was preceded in death by one sister, Helen LeMoine. Funeral services will be on Friday, July 6, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Pastor Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in Newton Burial Park. Dorothy Lankford Wilson

Dorothy Lankford Wilson, the daughter of Lewis W. and Winifred E. Willis Lankford, was born August 14, 1921 in Rich Hill, Missouri and passed away November 19, 2001 at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, MO, at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 5 days. She was united in marriage to Walter W. Uptegrove in 1937. She was later united in marriage to Robert C. Wilson on October 6, 1949 in Ft. Scott, Kansas and he preceded her in death August 28, 1991. Mrs. Wilson was employed from 1952-1963 at the Phoenix, Arizona State Hospital. She moved to Nevada, MO in 1963 and was employed as a Cosmetologist until retiring in 1976. She was a Charter Member of the Vernon County Geneological Society, D.A.R. and attended the United Methodist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Linda McPherson of Germantown, TENN, two brothers, Leonard Lankford of Napoleon, MO, R.L. "Bob" Lankford of Wheatland, MO, three sisters, Zelma Kimbrell of Independence, MO, Judith King of Hermitage, MO and Nina Jensen of Pittsburg, MO. Six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild also survive. She was preceded in death by two sons, Walter Eugene Uptegrove, Edwin Wayne Uptegrove, two brothers, Wesley Alan Lankford and Willis Herschel Lankford and her parents. Graveside services will be 2:00 Wednesday November 21, 2001 at Newton Burial Park with Rev. Paul Mooney officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday November 20, 2001 at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Jack H. Willis Sr.
Died On December 3, 2000
Jack H. Willis Sr., the son of Frank and Una Looney Willis, was born June 20, 1917 in Dallas, Texas and died December 3, 2000 at Beverly Healthcare in Nevada, Missouri at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was a self employed mechanic until his retirement. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Army. Survivors include three daughters, Cloe M. Seelye of Amarillo, Texas, Janice Murbach of Richmond, Texas, Sherry Young of Conway, Missouri, three sons, Jack Willis Jr. of Osceola, Missouri, Billy Willis and Jerry Willis of Sheldon, Missouri. Fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by one son, Brian, one sister, three brothers and his parents. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday December 7, 2000 at the National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas with Rev. Maurice Young officiating. Friends may call after 12 noon Wednesday and the family will receive friends from 1-2p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Hwy. 54 East and Hickory in Nevada. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America in care of the Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Stacy-Meyers Funeral Home of Nevada.

Benita Williams

Benita Jo Williams, 64, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday afternoon, February 5, 2001, at Freeman West Health System, Joplin, MO, following a short illness. She was born June 17, 1936, in Harlan, IA, to Bennie James Hopkins and Virginia Margaret Adams Hopkins. She married Ernest Eugene Williams on July 30, 1958, in Nevada, MO, and he preceded her in death on October 19, 1999. Mrs. Williams was a graduate of Walker High School in 1953. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She worked the past 42 years as a secretary at Vocational Rehabilitation with the State of Missouri located in Nevada. Survivors include one son, Kevin Dale Williams, Monett, MO; one stepson, Dennis Eugene Williams, Topeka, KS; one stepdaughter, Terri Elaine Frederick, Wichita, KS; one granddaughter, Tallie Jo Williams, Monett, MO; adopted grandchildren, Brian Chris Anderson, Jr., Carrie Jo Anderson, and Jacob Kenneth Anderson, all of Kansas City, MO; one brother, James Thomas Hopkins, Nevada, MO; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Betty Ann Woody, Vernon, Rosemary, and Jo Brundridge, all of Nevada, and Brian and June Anderson, Kansas City, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene, and one son, Brent Lee Rider in 1977. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 8, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Minister Taylor Francis officiating. Interment will follow in Marvin Chapel Cemetery, Vernon County, MO. Jaunita Williams

Jaunita Fern Williams, 75, Nevada, MO, passed away suddenly Thursday afternoon, October 19, 2000, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. She was born May 28, 1925, in Adrian, MO, to the late Guy Clinton Williams and Opal Wilhemina Cummings Williams. Mrs. Williams graduated from Archie High School in 1944. She was a Missouri licensed cosmetologist for several years and was a supervisor with Western Electric Company, Lee’s Summit, MO, retiring in 1985. She moved to Nevada in April 1986 from Lee’s Summit, MO. She was an active member in the United Methodist Church, Nevada, and was serving as Chairperson of the Denman-Hackett Circle, a ladies organization in the church. Survivors include two brothers, Leo Wayne Williams and wife, Dorothy, Warrensburg, MO, and Jimmy J. Williams and wife, Roberta, Overland Park, KS; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with many friends. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m.. Sunday, October 22, 2000 at the United Methodist Church, Nevada, MO. with Rev. Steven Barth officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery in Nevada. Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Saturday, October 21, and until 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Milster Funeral Home. The family receives friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Helen Williams
Died On March 19, 2001
Helen R. Williams, 94, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday morning, March 19, 2001 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a brief illness. She was born December 5, 1906 in Ridgeway, MO to the late James Martin Star and Anna Belle Jones Star. She was married October 20, 1928 in El Dorado Springs, MO to Lloyd C. Williams. He preceded her in death in 1973. Mrs. Williams moved to El Dorado Springs at the age of five from Ridgeway, MO and spent the remainder of her life in the El Dorado Springs and Nevada area. She worked at Harpy’s in Nevada for many years. For 27 years she was a volunteer hostess at the Nevada Senior Center. Survivors include two daughters, Anna R. Farmer, Nevada, MO and Mary L. Williams, Hollister, MO; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by one son, Earnest Eugene Williams and one sister Arabelle Elliott. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at El Dorado Springs City Cemetery with Dr. William Cox officiating. Ella Williams

Ella Maxine Williams, 74, Nevada, MO, passed away July 4, 2001 at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She was born October 1, 1926, in Cedar County, MO, to Sheldon Monah Hubbard and Velma Lois Currnett Hubbard. She married Hazen Williams on June 12, 1946, in Nevada, MO. He preceded her in death on November 19, 1997. Mrs. Williams was born and raised in Cedar County. She came to Nevada at age 16 and spent the remainder of her life here. She was a member of the Church of God Holiness, Deerfield, MO. She worked several years as a desk clerk at the Rambler Motel retiring in 1991. Survivors include one daughter, Velma Williams, Nevada, MO, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and Ivan Hubbard, and one sister, Virgie Garrigus. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery. Donald Willers

Donald L. Willers, 73, Moundville, passed away Thursday evening, August 9, 2001, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, following a lengthy illness. He was born on November 15, 1927, in Moundville, MO, to Fred G. Willers and Madge E. Huffman Willers. He married Bonnie Hornecker on December 27 1951, in Bronaugh, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. Willers was born and raised in Moundville. He was a graduate of Nevada High School in 1945. During 1945 and 1946 he served in the Army during WW II in the Philippines. He worked as a mechanic and also farmed in Moundville all of his life, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Moundville Methodist Church, the Liberal Masonic Lodge where he was a past master and served for 30 years on the Moundville Water Board. Survivors in addition to his wife, Bonnie, include three sons, Duane Willers, Moundville, MO, Doug Willers, Horton, MO, and Dan Willers, Carl Junction, MO; four granddaughters, Kim Sims, Carl Junction, MO, Patricia Crane, Neosho, MO, Donna Willers, Kansas City, MO, and Kelsey Smith, Carl Junction, MO; one great-grandson, Casey Sims, Carl Junctions, MO; two sisters, Juanita Bruns, Nevada, MO, and Beverly Manfredi, Denver, CO; and his mother, Madge Willers, Nevada, MO. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Willers. Graveside Services will be on Monday, August 13, 2001, at 11:30 a.m. at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, with Rev. John Harrison and Ed Post officiating. Friends may call now and until 11:00 a.m. on Monday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Masonic services will be at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 12, with visitation following 7:00-8:00 p.m.at the funeral home. Joyce Willers

Joyce Willers, 67, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday morning, June 24, 2001, at her home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born September 26, 1933, in Conroe, TX, to Milton Ray Disney and Doris Burnita Ozenberger Disney. She married John Dale Willers on November 26, 1956, in Nevada, MO, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Willers grew up in Michigan. She moved to El Dorado Springs in 1949 and graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1951. Following graduation she came to Nevada where she has lived ever since. She was a member of the Community Christian Church, Nevada. She worked at 3-M as a secretary for over 20 years, retiring in 1996. Since her retirement, she and her husband have spent the winters in Alamo, TX. Surivivors in addition to her husband, Dale, include two daughters, Irvilene Joyce Pettit Gardner, and husband, Mark, Leawood, KS, and Penne D. Willers Moore, and husband, Dusty, Milo, MO; one son, John Steven Willers, Nevada, MO; grandchildren, Jennifer, Katie, and Laurie Gardner, all of Leawood, KS, Shauna and Tiffany Willers, both of Nevada, MO, Samantha Drake, Warsaw, MO, Sam and Emily Moore, both of Milo, MO, Jason Pettit, Houston, TX; two great-grandchildren; five brothers, Roy O’Neal Disney, Eaton Rapids, MI, Donald T. Disney, Monroe, WA, Walter Keith Disney, and Dennis W. Disney, both of Shawnee, KS, and Jerry Disney, Richmond, MO; and one sister, Donnis Disney Morris, Walled Lake, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Royce Disney, and one son, Irving James Pettit. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada. Madge Huffman Willers
Died On October 5, 2001
Madge Huffman Willers, the daughter of Bryd C. and Sadie E. Foster Huffman, was born December 3, 1907 in Vernon County, Missouri and passed away October 5, 2001 at her residence at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 2 days. She was united in marriage to Fredrick G. Willers in 1925 in Nevada, Missouri and he preceded her in death in 1970. Mrs. Willers was employed by Cottey College for many years as their baker. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Nevada, Missouri. She is survived by two daughters, Juanita Bruns of Nevada, MO, Beverly Manfredi of Lakewood, CO, two brothers, Claude Huffman of Oracle, AZ and Foster Huffman of Oakland, CA, eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one son, Donald Lee, four sisters, three brothers and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. October 6, 2001 at the Newton Burial Park with Dr. Eldon Shaw officiating. A procession will leave from Evergreen Memorial Chapel at 11:15 a.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday October 6, 2001 at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Everett Wilcox, Jr.
Died On April 9, 2001
Everett Ewell Wilcox, Jr., 78, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday afternoon, April 9, 2001, at Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home, Deming, NM, following a brief illness. He was born March 5, 1923, in Rogers, AR, the son of Everett Ewell Wilcox, Sr. and Bessie Mary Johnson Wilcox. He married Flora E. Ransier on August 29, 1946, in Maritopa, CA, and she survives of the home. Mr. Wilcox was born in Rogers, AR, and grew up near Butler, MO. He served in the U.S. Navy in WW II. He settled in California after the war and worked for Standard Oil Co., retiring in 1971. He came to Vernon County shortly thereafter, and went to work for 3M in 1976, retired from there in 1985, and spent the remainder of his life here. He was a member of the First Christian Church. Thelma Whiteford
Died On November 24, 2001
Thelma Elizabeth Whiteford, 96, Nevada, MO, passed away Saturday night, November 24, 2001, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, MO, following a short illness. She was born August 5, 1905, in Fontana, KS, to James Elmer Addy and Elizabeth “Lizzie” King Addy. She was married to Charles V. Whiteford on September 22, 1929, and they made their home in Osawatomie, KS, where Mr. Whiteford worked at the First National Bank. Mrs. Whiteford graduated from Paola High School with the class of 1924, and received a teaching certificate from Emporia State College. She taught at the Harmony School and at the Fontana Grade School for five years. In 1936, she moved with her husband to Denver, CO, where they had an interest in a coal mining operation. After purchasing land in Vernon County, MO, in 1941, they moved to Nevada where she resided until her death. Mr. Whiteford preceded her in death on September 21, 1980. She had been a resident at the Terrace Apartments of Christian Health Care for the past three and one-half years. Mrs. Whiteford was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Nevada and participated in the Women’s Circle and many other activities. She was a charter member of Chapter D.W., P.E.O. that was organized in Osawatomie in 1930. She participated in many Cottey College activities in Nevada. She was a member of the Research Club of Nevada for 57 years. Those surviving her are two nieces, Dorothy Jean Kiser, Paola, KS, and Elizabeth Predmore, Barinerd, MN, and several great-nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church, Nevada, with Rev. Greg Ferree officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Whiteford Cemetery, Osawatomie, KS. Friends may call now and until 9:30 a.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, and the family receives friends 7:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church, 500 N. Olive, Nevada, MO 64772.

Clarence Wells
Died On July 31, 2001
Clarence Wells, 86, Nevada, MO, formerly of Sheldon, MO, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 31, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born October 4, 1914, in El Dorado Springs, MO, to Ralph Oren Wells and Winona Berry Wells. Mr. Wells was born and raised in St. Clair County. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. After the war, he farmed near Sheldon for most of his life. Survivors include one sister, EdithYoungman, Nevada, MO; one nephew, Stanley Wells, Blue Springs, MO; one niece, Barbara Youngman, Las Vegas, NV; one great-nephew, Steven Wells, New York, NY; one great-niece, Kristi Warden, Joplin, MO, and one great-great-nephew, Drew McKay Warden, Joplin, MO. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 3, 2001, at Moore Cemetery, Nevada, with John Nichols officiating. Friends may call now and until 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Delbert "Bill" Weber
Died On March 29, 2001
Delbert Lyman “Bill” Weber, age 80, died of cancer illness March 29, 2001 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law at Benton, Kansas He was born September 1, 1920 southwest of Deerfield, the oldest son of Curt and Irene Klontz Weber. He married Bessie Marie Hill at Nevada, MO on April 4, 1942. They lived in the Deerfield community almost all of their 54 years together. Bill was drafted into the United States Army on August 4, 1942 at Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis. He was assigned to the 40th Engineers Combat Regiment, Company S, and served in the European Theater of Operations. On September 26, 1945 he was honorably discharged at Jefferson Barracks having attained the rank of 1st Sergeant. He worked for a short time for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, then owned and operated a sawmill at Deerfield, MO, later forming partnership of Lawrence & Weber Sawmill. After selling his interest in the mill, he became an independent trucker. A stroke in 1971 forced him to retire. His wife preceded him in death, March 27, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gene and Harold “Jack” Weber. Survivors include his daughter and husband, Linda and Kenneth Sackett, Benton, Kansas; grandson and wife, Michael and Sonya Sackett and their twin sons, Ian and Jared, Kechi, Kansas; sisters, Mamie Cook, Wichita, Kansas and Virginia Johnson and brother Curtis Lee Weber, both of Deerfield, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and cousins survive. Pastor Bill Smith and Robert Reid will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Deerfield Church of God with burial to follow in Deerfield Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to Nevada Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Charles "Charlie" Watson Sr.
Died On June 22, 2001
Charles "Charlie" Watson Sr., the son of Owen L. and Arzella Prince Watson, was born January 20, 1929 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and died June 22, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 2 days. Mr. Watson was united in marriage to the former Carolyn S. Martin in September 1955 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and she preceded him in death December 24, 1983. He was employed by the Plante Pipe and Steel Company in California as a sales representative until his retirement. Mr. Watson moved to Nevada, Missouri in 1990 coming from California. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean conflict. Survivors include one son, Chuck Watson of Nevada, Missouri, two daughters, Cindy Watson of Portland, Maine and Tracy Rich of Mohave Valley, Arizona, four grandchildren, Nicholas Rich, Mallorie Rich, Amanda Watson-Ardese and Elizabeth Watson, one great grandchild, Tucker Watson-Ardese. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents. Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday July 3, 2001 at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, California. Friends may call at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel after 12 noon Tuesday, June 26, 2001 and the family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Highway 54 East at Hickory.

Virginia Watson
Died On September 14, 2001
Virginia A. Watson, 88, Nevada, MO passed away Friday evening, September 14, 2001 at Nevada Regional Medical Center. She was born July 23, 1913 in Omaha, Neb. To the late Harvey G. Watson and Edith Goodell Watson. Miss Watson was raised in Anthony KS. She was a graduate of Cottey College, and earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where she was elected to Theta Sigma Phi, national editorial honorary for women and was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She served as director of the Cottey College news bureau and the alumnae office for 20 years, before taking early retirement in July 1975. At Cottey College, she was also an advisor for the student yearbook for 11 years. Prior to moving to Nevada in 1953, she was editor of the employee publication for the Kansas City, MO Power and Light Co; a news writer for radio station KCMO; an associate editor for Box Office magazine and general assignment reporter on the morning side of the Kansas City Star. She had also been a news reporter on the Ponca City News in Oklahoma; the Wichita Beacon; the Norwood News-Enterprise in Ohio; the Tulsa Tribune and the Bellevue Telescope in Kansas. Survivors include several cousins residing outside of Missouri. Miss Watson was cremated and she requested that no formal services be held. Interment was in Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO. Arrangements were under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Linda Watkins
Died On May 1, 2001
Linda R. Watkins, 54, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 1, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, following a lengthy illness. She was born May 12, 1946, in Helena, Montana, the daughter of Raymond F. Klampe and Frances C. Ruckman Klampe. She married William “Bill” W. Watkins on June 27, 1966, in Billings, MT, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Watkins was born and raised in Montana. She graduated from Cottey College, Nevada, MO, in 1966. She attended Missouri Southern College, Joplin, MO. Linda worked for the R-5 School System for 18 years as office manager. She also served as treasurer for the R-5 School Board. She retired from the school system in April 1995. She was an active member of the DW Chapter P.E.O., the United Methodist Church, Nevada, and the Ellis Domestic Science Club. Survivors in addition to her husband, Bill, include two sons, William R. Watkins and wife, Julie, Christopher W. Watkins and wife, Dawn all of Olathe, KS; one daughter, Jennifer L. Phillips and husband, Thomas, Blue Springs, MO; mother, Frances Klampe, Nevada, MO; two grandsons, William Drake Watkins and Benjamin Christopher Watkins; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Steve Barth officiating. Committal will follow in Newton Burial Park. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Lupus Foundation in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

Grace Watkins
Died On April 26, 2001
Grace November Watkins, 87, rural Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday morning, April 26, 2001, at her home in Nevada, following a sudden illness. She was born November 2, 1913, in Steele, MO, the daughter of James E. Young and Nancy Arrianna Thompson Young. She married William M. Watkins on July 4, 1932, in Caruthersville, MO. He preceded her in death March 25, 1989. Mrs. Watkins graduated from Steele High School, Steele, MO, after attending the Gibson, MO, country grade school on the Bayou in Missouri’s bootheel. She looked to attending the yearly Gibson School reunions to be with family and old friends. She was an active and faithful member of the Church of Christ, Nevada. She and her husband moved to California in their early married life where her two surviving children were born while Mr. Watkins was employed as a civilian at Mare Island shipyards. They later lived in Chicago before moving to the Vernon County area in 1957. She worked at Nevada State Hospital for 20 years retiring in 1978. “Mom-Mom”, as she was affectionately known by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren loved to garden, fish, keep in touch with family and friends, and enjoyed working at the We-Care Center at her church until her eye sight began to fail. She was also a member of the Ellis Domestic Science Club. Survivors include one son, Bill Watkins and wife, Linda of Nevada, MO; one daughter, Mary Fowler and husband, Larry, Sheldon, MO; eight grandchildren, Terry Fowler, Olathe, KS, Larry W. Fowler, Sheldon, MO, Perry Fowler, Nevada, MO, Sherry Regers, Hume, MO, Mary Jane McHenry, Nevada, Mo, Billy R. Watkins, Christopher Watkins and Jennifer Phillips, all of the Kansas City area, 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene and James “Pete” Young, and two sisters, Kieffer Reber and Lucille Smith, all of Steele, MO, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, four sisters, and one daughter in infancy. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 30, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. The family receives friends 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29, and friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Lupus Foundation or the American Cancer Society in her memory in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
