Kenneth "Ken" M. Lawrence, the son of Elmer G. and Grace M. Edmonston Lawrence, was born October 14, 1909 in Comanche County near Protection, KS and died December 10, 2000 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 26 days. Mr. Lawrence was a graduate of Protection High School in Protection, KS in 1929. In 1937, he was employed by Armour Creameries in Woodward, Oklahoma as quality control supervisor. He was united in marriage to the former Naomi Ruth Fleming June 20, 1938 in Woodward, Oklahoma. They moved to Iola, KS in 1946 where he was employed by Pet Milk. In 1947, they moved to Richards, MO where he farmed. They moved to Nevada, MO in 1948 where he was employed by Sears as manager in their Home Improvement Department, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Nevada and also a member of the Questers Sunday School Class. He was formerly a member of the Elks Lodge #564. Survivors include his wife, Naomi, of the home, one son, Richard Lawrence of Rancho Cordova, CA, one daughter, Kendall Hjelmfelt and her husband, David of Denver, CO, one sister, Ethel Woods of Hamilton, TX and three grandchildren, Trevor and Rebecca Hjelmfelt and Shawn Lawrence. He was preceded in death by three sisters, one brother and his parents. Funeral services will be Thursday December 14, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Barth, Rev. Lester Thornton and Rev. Scott Hall officiating. Burial will be at Newton Burial Park. Friends may call after 12 noon Wednesday and the family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church. Services are under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Hwy. 54 East at Hickory, Nevada, MO.

Milton "Bud" Larimore
Died On November 23, 2001
Milton, “Bud Larimore, 54, El Dorado Springs, MO passed away Friday evening, November 23, 2001, at his residence following an illness of several months. He was born March 21, 1947 in Omaha, Neb. To William Damon Larimore and Leola Dora Marsh Larimore. He was married April 3, 1994 in Nevada, MO to Tammy Ford Larimore who survives of the home. Mr. Larimore was raised in Omaha, Neb. He served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam Conflict. After the war he came to Nevada and spent the rest of his life in this area. He made his living as a dry-wall installer. He was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lodge #3770. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War. He was also a band member of the Midnight Playboys for 20 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Russell Larimore, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Trillie Palmer, Nevada, MO; one step-son, Chris Castlebury, Fort Riley, KS; one step-daughter, Heather Castlebury, El Dorado Springs, MO; four grandchildren, Justin and Kendra Larimore, Nevada, MO, Tamra and Brent Jackson, El Dorado Springs, MO; his mother, Leola Larimore, Nevada, MO; one brother, Dan Larimore, Moundville, MO; four sisters, Joan Sander, Moundville, MO, Judy Kibler, Moundville, MO, Jan Howry, Moundville, Leann Kohel, Omaha, Neb.; 19 nieces and nephews, 29 great nieces and nephews, three great-great-nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Along with his father, two brothers, Damon and John preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at Ferry Funeral Home with Ray Dean Scism officiating. Interment will follow in Marvin Chapel Cemetery, Milo, MO with full military honors. Friends may call from now and until the time of service at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Michell Lanning
Died On April 16, 2001
Michell Joyce Laning, 30, Nevada, MO, passed away suddenly as the result of an accident Monday evening, April 16, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. She was born April 25, 1970, in Trenton, NJ, the daughter of Jerry L. Griffin and Rosemary Jarzyk Hammac. She married Tony M. Laning in August 1994, in Branson, MO, and he survives. Mrs. Laning was born in Trenton, NJ, and graduated from high school in Fox, Arkansas. She has been employed by Vinyard Farm & Home Supply the past five months. She had worked for Intek Industries in Ft. Scott, KS, for a time. She and her husband operated Horton’s Pizza Plus in Rich Hill for two years. She has lived in Nevada the past year coming from Rich Hill in 2000. Survivors in addition to her husband, Tony, include one son, Skyler Laning, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Amanda Laning, Nevada, MO; father, Jerry L. Griffin, Barefoot Bay, FL; mother, Rosemary Hammac, Port St. John, FL; grandmother, Rhoda V. Berger, Port St. John, FL; grandfather, Jimmy Jarzyk, Daytona Beach, FL; two brothers, Dwayne Griffin, state of Georgia, and Michael Griffin, Troyden, PA; three sisters, Becky Griffin Thornton, state of Georgia, Vicky Griffin Cantrell, and Christina Griffin, both of Port St. John, FL, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 21, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Ruth Lane
Died On June 30, 2001
Ruth F. Lane, 82, Nevada, MO passed away Saturday morning, June 30, 2001 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born September 18, 1918 in Caruthersville, MO to the late John Ike Adams and Eliza Louise Scott Adams. Ms. Lane spent most of her life in the Sikeston, MO area. She was a dietician in the food service industry. After her retirement in 1980, she moved to Nevada and spent the remainder of her life her. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Triplett, Nevada, MO; one grandson, Kevin Triplett, Grand Junction, CO; one great-grandson, Logan Triplett, Grand Junction, CO; one brother, Gene Adams, Bloomington, IL; two sisters, Maxine Crider, Sikeston, MO; Nadine Collier, Lilbourn, MO; several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, five brothers, Finis, Wallace, John, Joe and Dennis Adams preceded her in death. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2001 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO. Joan Knuteson

Joan Marie Knuteson, 41, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2000, at her home in Nevada. She was born August 30, 1959, in Minneapolis, MN, to John Darwin Knuteson and Elsie Lucille Flesberg Knuteson. Joan graduated from Nevada High School in 1977, Southwest Missouri State University, and University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Nevada, MO. Survivors include her parents, John and Elsie Knuteson, Nevada, MO; three sisters, Kathleen Knuteson Olson, Pelican Rapids, MN, Peggy Dehn and her husband Bryan, Leonard, North Dakota, Amy Kyte and her husband Randall, Canfield, OH; one brother, David Knuteson, Aurora, OH; uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews. Memorial services will be Thursday, January 4, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Scott Hall officiating. Memorials are suggested to Moss House, Nevada, MO, c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Frederick R. "Tony" Knoderer
Died On November 18, 2001
Frederick R. "Tony" Knoderer, the son of Antonio and Emma Leakin Knoderer, was born in Slater, Missouri and passed away November 18, 2001 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center. He was a graduate of Nevada High School. He attended Missouri University and furthered his education through continuing education. He was first employed at the Star Theater. He was united in marriage to the former Joyce Kafer on October 6, 1946 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He was employed by Farm and Home Savings until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Veteran of WWII. He received three bronze stars for the Tunisia, Naples, Foggia, Rome and the Arno Campaigns. He also painted many signs for local Nevada businesses. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for 43 years. He was also church treasurer for 15 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Past Master in 1975 of Osage Lodge 303 AF & AM in Nevada, MO. Mr. Knoderer was instrumental in the establishment of the Nevada Country Club. He was an avid golfer, winning many tournaments and trophies. He was the Nevada Champion four times. Survivors include his wife, Joyce, of the home, one son, Stanley Knoderer, DDS and his wife, Brenda, of Joplin, MO, one daughter, Joyce Elaine Knoderer of Joplin, MO, three grandchildren, Stanna, Brandon and Carissa Knoderer and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday November 21, 2001 at First Baptist Church with Dr. William C. Cox officiating. Burial will be at the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Tuesday. Masonic Rites will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel with visitation to follow. Robert Kistner

Robert James Kistner, 69, Nevada, MO, passed away Saturday morning November 24, 2001, at his home in Nevada following an illness of several weeks. He was born February 29, 1932, in Halstead, KS, to James Kistner and Ada Beatrice Jones Kistner. He married Markalene Nichols on May 19, 1960, and she survives of the home. He was born and raised in Halstead, KS. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He worked for the Nevada Police Department and as a security officer at Nevada State Hospital until his retirement. Survivors in addition to his wife, Markalene, include two daughters, Cathy Simon and her husband, David, Milo, MO, and Patty Culbertson and her husband, Rodger, Nevada, MO; one son, Jim Kistner, and his wife, Sandy, San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Rob Simon, Danelle Ropelato and her husband, Chuck, and Brandon Love, all of Nevada; step-grandchildren, Matt Culbertson, Lenexa, KS, Jamie Hilbers and her husband, Brian, Kansas City, MO, Michelle and Robert Watson, both of San Diego, CA, nine great-grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews, Debbie Morris, Ava Johnson, Kenlei Huston, Linda Weber, David Huston, Francine Riggs, Amy Stark, Angie Nichols, and Nicholas Nichols, 11 great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Jim Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Jo Anne King
Died On March 31, 2001
Jo Anne King, 46, of Nevada, Missouri, died March 31, 2001 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri after a long battle with ovarian cancer. She was born September 9, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Roger Allen and Edith E. "Cole" Hammergren. She was a graduate of El Dorado Springs High School in 1972 and then attended Missouri Southern where she obtained an associates degree. In 1976 she was employed by Pillsbury of Joplin, Missouri. She then continued her schooling while substitute teaching. She moved to El Dorado Springs, Missouri in 1990 where she was employed by Cedar County Memorial Hospital. She was then employed by the Nevada State Hospital as a developmental assistant, moving to Nevada, Missouri in 1991. She then worked for Key Work Clothes in Nevada. She was united in marriage to Kevin K. King on February 14, 1992 in Nevada, Missouri. In 1995, she was employed by O'Sullivans in Lamar, Missouri. In 1999, she became a substitute teacher for the Nevada R-5 School District, a job she dearly loved. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in El Dorado Springs, Missouri where she also taught Sunday School. She was very active in the Bryan and Benton School P.T.O. She enjoyed fishing and gardening. Survivors include her husband, Kevin, of the home, three daughters, Aubrey Housh and her husband, Jerron, of Diamond, Missouri, and Allison and Kaitlyn King, of the home, one grandchild, Colby Tate Housh, the light of her life, four brothers, Kenneth Hammergren and his wife, Barbara, of Whittier, CA, Kermit Hammergren and his wife, Kate, of Sacramento, CA, Roger Allen Hammergren, Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Garden City, MO, George Hammergren and his wife, Colleen, of Bloomington, Nebraska and two sisters, Donna Fletcher and her husband, Jim, and Nancy Post and her husband, Bob, of El Dorado Springs, MO, two brother-in-laws, Jan Wysong and his wife, Judy, of Modesto, CA, and Bill King and his wife, Julie, of Independence, MO and numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, George and Bertha "Estep" Cole, and Oscar and Edna Hammergren, five uncles, two aunts and one nephew. Funeral services will be Wednesday April 4, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Nevada, MO with Pastor Dana G. Taylor and Dr. William C. Cox officiating. Interment will be at the Newton Burial Park. Friends may call after 12:00 noon Monday and the family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Geneva Kennedy
Died On April 1, 2001
Geneva L. Kennedy, 84, Lee’s Summit, MO, formerly of Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 1, 2001, at White Ridge Nursing Home, Lee’s Summit, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born January 22, 1917, in Vernon County, MO, the daughter of Jesse Elmer Malcom and Nellie J. Manley Malcom. On February 8, 1937, she was united in marriage to Mike M. Kennedy in Kansas City, MO. He preceded her in death on February 26, 1999, after 62 years of marriage. Mrs. Kennedy attended school in Schell City, MO, and lived most of her life in Nevada. She was active with the Senior Center in Stockton and Nevada. She and her husband lived in Kansas City for 20 years. Following his retirement, they lived in Stockton before coming back to Nevada. Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Pearce and her husband, Glenn, Independence, MO, Helen Reynolds and her husband, Clayton, and Judy L. Roberts and her husband, Sam, all of Raytown, MO, 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, and one sister, Inez Raines, Nevada, MO. In addition to her husband, Mike, Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by seven brothers, William, Loyal, Asa, Melvin, Everett, Albert and Kenneth Malcom, and three sisters, Leona G. McDaniel, Sylvia Flehearty, and Serena Bliss. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Pastor Melvin Mabra officiating. James Keesee

James Earl Keesee, 69, Sheldon, MO, passed away Saturday morning, July 7, 2001, at Barton County Memorial Hospital, Lamar MO, following a lengthy illness. He was born July 27, 1931 in Springfield, MO, to the late Earl Keesee and Mary Lorene Morris Keesee. He was married February 25, 1985, in Miami, OK, to Lora Jean Scott Keesee who survives of the home. James had been employed by Chicago Bridge and Iron Welding Co. and Remington Arms both in Kansas City, MO. He also worked for Pohl Construction in Nevada, MO. He was self-employed for 21 years as a custom dozer operator. He retired in 1989. Along with his wife Lora Jean, survivors include two daughters (of June Keesee), Diana Duffield, Olathe, KS, Margie Vermillion, Batesville, MS; one step-son, Randy Dickinson, Pittsburg, KS; one step-daughter, Cindy Frasier, Joplin, MO; nine grandchildren, John Bradley Vermillion, James Levi Vermillion, Jesse Hornecker, Amy Margaret Kenney, Carrie Lee Yokley, Brandy Hornecker, Adrianne Wynter Ross, Alexander Summer Ross, Danielle Dickinson and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at Beeny-Ferry Funeral Home, Sheldon, MO. Interment will be in Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, MO at a later date. Honorary Pallbearers are, Gene Lathrop, Shorty Lathrop, Tom Claflin, Don Doolin, Ivan Locke and Jim Wisehart.

Lynn Keeny
Died On June 20, 2001
Lynn C. Keeny, 80, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday, June 18, 2001, at his home in Nevada. Mr. Keeny was born June 20, 1920, in Harwood, MO, to Oliver Cecil Keeny and Grace Iona Magann Keeny. He married Emily Smith on November 28, 1946, in Girard, KS. She preceded him in death on September 12, 1990. Mr. Keeny grew up in Nevada and was a 1938 graduate of Nevada High School. He served in the Army from 1940-1945 as a rifle sharpshooter. He was awarded the Bronze Star for the Aleutian Island Campaign during WW II. He worked as a mail carrier in San Carlos, CA, for many years until his retirement in 1987 at which time he came back to Nevada. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include one sister, Mabel Brown, Nevada, MO, and one brother, Kenneth Keeny, K.C., MO. In addition to his wife, Emily, he was preceded in death by one brother, Carroll Keeny, and one sister, Dorothy Gafke. Graveside services will be held at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, on Thursday, June 21, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Steve Barth officiating. Elmira Johnston

Elmira Johnston, 84, Nevada, MO, formerly from the Rinehart Community, passed away Friday afternoon, April 20, 2001 at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO following an illness of several months. She was born April 9, 1917 in Vernon County, MO to the late Emit DePratt and Ellen Gerard. She was married December 21, 1938 in Lamar, MO to Thomas Johnston. He preceded her in death in September 28, 1987. Mrs. Johnston was a life long resident of Vernon County, MO. She and her husband farmed for many years the family farm in the Rinehart Community. Following her husband’s death in 1987 she moved to Nevada, MO, where she lived the remainder of her life. Survivors include two nieces. Along with her parents and spouse, three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at Balltown Cemetery, Horton, MO. Roy Junior "Mutt" Johnson
Died On October 10, 2000
Roy Junior “Mutt” Johnson, 75, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday afternoon, October 10, 2000, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin following a lengthy illness. He was born September 13, 1925, in Vernon County, MO, to Charles Leroy Johnson and Nora Belle Meek Johnson. He married Marjorie L. Brooks on June 30, 1945, in Ft. Scott, KS, and she survives of the home. Mr. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Vernon County and attended Stotesbury Schools. He farmed all of his life. He also worked at the Nevada State Hospital Power Plant, retiring in 1990. He was a member of NFO (National Farmers Organization) for many years. Survivors in addition to his wife, Marjorie, include one son, James Leroy Johnson, Hume, MO; five daughters, Audrey Hamel, Hume, MO, Nancy Johnson, Nevada, MO, Debbie Barnes and Peggy Deming, both of Walker, MO, and Sarahbelle Johnson, of the home; seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Kenneth, and one grandson, Colby Deming. Funeral services will be Friday, October 13, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home with interment following in East Liberty Cemetery, Stotesbury, MO. David Johnson

David Lee Johnson, 25, San Diego, CA, passed away Saturday evening, January 13, 2001, at the USCD Medical Center, San Diego, CA. He was born in Roseville, CA, on January 27, 1975, to Carl Everett Johnson and Janis Morris. David attended Placer High School in Auburn, CA. He lived in Arizona and San Diego while pursuing a career as an industrial and home painter from 1991 to 2001. During his stay along the coast in San Diego, David enjoyed surfing. Survivors include his father, Carl Johnson, Phoenix, AZ; mother, Janis Schwarz, Nevada, MO; one brother, Tom Johnson, Nevada, MO; two sisters, Julie Stockes and Sandy Mayberry, both of San Diego; maternal grandmother, Adena Cummings, Visalia, CA; stepfather, Bill “Arman” Schwarz, Nevada, MO; one stepbrother, Bill Schwarz III, Kansas City, MO, and one stepsister, Jamie Schwarz, Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 20, 2001, at 3:00 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Greg Ferree officiating. Interment will follow in Deepwood Cemetery.

William Dee Jacks, Sr., 67, Metz, MO, passed away Wednesday evening, August 8, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born on December 19, 1933, in Wathena, KS, to Ervin Noah Jacks and Blanche Mae Denning Jacks. He married Norma Marie Tyree on February 18, 1961, in Miami, OK, and she preceded him in death on June 2, 1978. He was born and raised in Wathena, KS. William came to Vernon County in 1948 and spent the remainder of his life here. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked for a number of years for W. A. Jones Construction Company. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and bowler. Survivors include three sons, William Dee Jacks, Jr. and Mike Jacks, both of Nevada, MO, and Danny Jacks, Ozark, MO; two daughters, Billie Jean Tyree, Joplin, MO, and Terry Lynn Welborn, Arlington, TX; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Walter Jacks, Metz, MO. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Lindsey Cunningham, and one nephew, Ronnie Jacks. Graveside Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 13, 2001, at Newton Burial Park with John Nichols officiating. The family will receive friends 7:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 12, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Vernon County Cancer Relief Fund in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

Delores J. Hunter
Died On July 24, 2001
Delores J. Hunter, the daughter of Lawrence and Reffie Mae Johnson Treat, was born April 6, 1932 in Wichita, Kansas and passed away July 24, 2001 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri at the age of 69 years, 3 months and 18 days. Mrs. Hunter was united in marriage to Richard Wallace July 19, 1949 in Wichita, Kansas. She was also united in marriage to Ray J. Hunter on May 12, 1973 in Miami, Oklahoma; he preceded her in death in 1989. Mrs. Hunter was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Nevada Manor Nursing Home and other various nursing homes in the Nevada area, retiring in 1985. Survivors include one daughter, Cathy J. Wallace (Young) of Nevada, Missouri, five grandchildren, Eric L. McDonough, Cassidy M. Carlson, Brian A. Young, Stephenie J. Kirkham and Richard A. Kirkham, two great grandchildren, Levi Robert Owen Carlson and Christopher Carlson . She was also preceded in death by her son, Jimmy W. Wallace. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 28, 2001 at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel with Mr. John Nichols officiating. Burial will be at St. James Cemetery. Friends may call Friday after 9:00 a.m. and the family will receive friends Friday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Clarence Hoskins
Died On October 13, 2001
Clarence Taft Hoskins, 91, Nevada, MO, passed away Saturday night, October 13, 2001, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, following a brief illness. He was born November 25, 1909, in Freedom, OK, to Daniel Webster Hoskins and Myrtle Iva Akins Hoskins. He married Stella Anna Hoover on December 23, 1930, in El Dorado, KS. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2000. Mr. Hoskins was born and raised in Oklahoma. He came to Vernon County in 1933 and spent virtually the rest of his life here. He made his living as a farmer. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was an avid gardner. Survivors include two sons, Clarence Hoskins, Jr., Ore Grand, CA, and Bob Hoskins, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Wilma Burdick, Nevada, MO; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and four great-great-step-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Harding and Leila McWhithey, both of Alva, OK. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Neoma Allen, four brothers, and two sisters. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2001, at Moore Cemetery, Nevada, with Elder Dennis Mix officiating. Friends may call now and until 1:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Rose Holt
Died On December 30, 2000
Rose Ella Holt, 42, Nevada, MO, passed away December 30, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born March 23, 1958, to Grant Albert Piotrowski and Ella Rebecca Kessler Piotrowski. She married Jack T. Holt on December 5, 1978, in Nevada, MO, and he survives of the home. Rose was a lifelong resident of Nevada. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1979. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Survivors in addition to her husband, Jack, include one son, Tim Holt, of the home; one daughter, Rebecca Holt, of the home; mother, Ella Piotrowski, Nevada, MO. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Dewey. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home with George Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends Tuesday, January 2, 2001, 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home

Howard Holcomb
Died On September 5, 2001
Howard Richard Holcomb, 88, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday night, September 5, 2001, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, following a brief illness. He was born September 27, 1912, in Carterville, MO, to John Holcomb and Carrie Winnerstine Holcomb. He married Lucille K. Poland on December 9, 1937, in Nevada, MO, and she survives of the home. Mr. Holcomb came to Nevada as a small child. He served in the 84th Field Artillery Calvary from 1936-1939. He farmed in the Nevada area until May 1941. Then he moved to Lansing, MI, where he went to work at a railroad depot. In 1942 he went to work at the Oldsmobile Defense Plant. He came back to Nevada in 1945 where he farmed until 1959. He was a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church in Nevada. He went to work for the Nevada R-5 School District as a mechanic and bus driver until his retirement in 1975. Survivors in addition to his wife, Lucille, include two sons, Tom and Jerry Holcomb, both of Nevada, MO; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one brother, Harry B. Holcomb, Moundville, MO, and one sister, Naida Gosshan, Long Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Jerry Pyle officiating. Interment will follow in Antioch Cemetery, rural Nevada, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Nevada Hospice in care of Nevada Regional Medical Center Foundation, 800 S. Ash, Nevada, MO 64772.

Martha Hoffman
Died On February 10, 2001
Martha F. Hoffman, age 95 of Nevada, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2001 at the Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born on August 16, 1905 in Nevada, MO to Alva N Forney and Cora Creel Forney. She was married to Burton W. Hoffman in March of 1927 and he survives of the Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. Martha was a lifelong resident of Nevada. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1923. She worked for Farm & Home Savings Association for several years before going to work for the Renwick Insurance Agency in 1932 where she worked for 35 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Nevada and was a long time member of the Order of the Eastern Star having received her seventy- five year recognition pin. In addition to her husband Burton, she is survived by one sister Francis Dome, Dumas, TX, two nieces Virginia Hoffman Ellis of Raymore, MO and Natallie S. Robling of Vincennes, IN, and two nephews, Jim Morris, Portland, OR and Steward Seiwert of Knoxville, TN. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 12, 2001 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Rev. Greg Feree officiating. Interment will follow in the Newton Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Monday before the service. Those who wish may contribute to the First Presbyterian Church in Nevada in her memory.

Florence Hochstatter
Died On April 11, 2001
Florence Theresa Hochstatter, 105, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday night, April 11, 2001, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a short illness. She was born September 29, 1895, in Maquoketa, IA, to John Miller and Caroline Moyer Miller. She married Joseph Hochstatter on February 9, 1926, in Nevada, MO, and he preceded her in death in 1950. Mrs. Hochstatter moved to Vernon County as a young girl. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nevada. She attended school at Round Prairie and Sheldon and studied at the University of Missouri. An elementary school teacher who began teaching at the age of 17, she taught for several years prior to her marriage. She and her husband farmed southeast of Nevada. In the late 1930’s, she resumed teaching and taught about 15 years at Maple Dale School, District 45, near Camp Clark. After Mr. Hochstatter’s death in 1950, she moved to Nevada and did practical nursing for several years. Mr. & Mrs. Hochstatter had no children, however, they raised the four children of James and Mary Hochstatter McHugh. One of the children, James P. McHugh Jr., a navy pilot, was lost at sea in 1956. The three surviving children are Mary Fidelis Wellendorf, Tucson, AZ, Jeanne Sheets, Nevada, MO, and Helen Brauer, Ft. Collins, CO. Also surviving are four nephews, Joseph Miller, Springfield, MO, Gerald Miller, Whitefish, MT, Donald Smith, Cedar Rapids, IA, and J.C. Smith, Nevada, MO. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 16, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nevada, with Father Anthony Pileggi officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Nevada. Rosary service will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, where friends may call now and until 1:00 p.m. Monday. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Catholic School in care of Ferry Funeral Home.

Donald Ray Hill
Died On August 1, 2001
Donald Ray Hill, the son of Johnny Ray and Dora Mae Smith Hill, was born July 7, 1941 in Rich Hill, Missouri and passed away August 1, 2001 at his residence in Kansas City, Kansas at the age of 60 years and 24 days. Mr. Hill was a self-employed painter. Survivors include three daughters, Tina Marie Beaird of Kansas City, Kansas, Marty Abernathy of Nevada, Missouri and Dana Hill of Kansas City, Kansas, five grandchildren, Kory Riley, Trina Rosas, Sabrina, Debra and Randy Hill. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Johnson. Private graveside services were held August 10, 2001 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Rich Hill, Missouri with Dr. Melvin W. Mabra officiating. Services were under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
