Paul E. Moss, the son of Delbert and Florence Jones Moss was born January 24, 1930 in Webster, Kansas and died June 2, 2003 at Christian Healthcare at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 18 days. Mr. Moss was employed for many years as a truck driver until his retirement in 1992. Survivors include his wife, Gina of the home, two sons, Paul Moss of California, Stanley Moss of the state of Nevada, four daughters, Lori Moss of Oklahoma, Lisa Moss of California, Paula Moss of Indiana, Linda Moss of Washington, four brothers, Ray, Lester, Keith and Donald Moss, all of California, and four sisters, Colleen, Bethal, and Ellen Moss, all of Washington and LaDonna Jean Moss of California. He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and his parents. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday June 6, 2003 at Moundville Cemetery with Rev. Terry Mosher officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Nevada, Missouri.

Iva Mowry

Iva Pearl Mowry, 101, Nevada, MO, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, following a lengthy illness. She was born June 6, 1901, in Vernon County, MO, to Ural Kameron Tylar and Myrtle Mae Hammond Tylar. She married Lewis Earl Mowry on March 3, 1918, in Vernon County, MO. He preceded her in death on February 8, 1960. Mrs. Mowry was born and raised in Vernon County and spent her entire lifetime here. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Earl L. Mowry, Billings, MO, and Stan Mowry, Nevada, MO; four daughters, Frances M. Zwiebel, Huntington Beach, CA, M. Lorine Mayes, Ellis, KS, Maudie Mae Ramey, Springfield, MO, and Mabel Urner, Nevada, MO; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Lewis, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Carol Ann Westusin, and Eric Mowry. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Scott Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Richard Mullen
Died On May 28, 2002
Richard L. Mullen, 78, Milo, MO, passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 28, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born April 24, 1924, in Longton, KS, to Charles L. Mullen and Emaleta Fuller Mullen. He married Peggy E. Wix on January 1, 1968, at the Milo Baptist Church, Milo, MO, and she survives of the home. Richard grew up in Sedan, KS, and graduated from Sedan High School in 1942. He served in the Army during WW II. He served in Europe and was in all the major European campaigns including the invasions of Normandy and Utah Beach. He was also stationed for a time at Camp Clark in Nevada. He was awarded several medals including the French Cross 'Croix De Guerre' with palm leaf cluster. He worked for Ford Motor Company as an auto body painter in Long Beach, CA, for a number of years. He returned to Vernon County in 1964 where he lived the remainder of his lifetime. He owned and operated Mullen Body Shop for 10 years in Nevada as well as farmed near Montevallo. Survivors in addition to his wife Peggy, include two sons, Michael Jones, Grant Mt., AL, and Richard Mullen, Milo, MO; three daughters, Judy Vigil, Sedan, KS, Tana Trost, Newport Beach, CA, and Robin Pilcher, Milo, MO, 26 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters, Janice Jo and Jackie Faye Mullen. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 10:00-11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Alfred Mundy Sr.
Died On February 13, 2003
Alfred Irven Mundy, Sr. 88, Sheldon, MO, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2003, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO following a lengthy illness.. He was born June 26, 1914 in Mexico, MO to George E. Mundy and Mabel A. Matthews Mundy. He was married August 3, 1944 in Russellville, AR to Sue Laverne Morris Mundy. She preceded him in death November 11, 2001. Mr. Mundy was raised in Mexico, MO and came to Vernon County in 1953 and spent the remainder of his life here. He worked for many years at Sheldon Dairy Products in Sheldon, MO until it's closing in 1979. He also did carpenter work. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WW II. Survivors include two sons, Alfred Mundy Jr., Sheldon, MO and Eddie Mundy, Golden, CO; three daughters, Sandra Cromer, Knob Knoster, MO, Delores Swearingin, Eagle Pass, TX and Shirley McKay, Marshall, MO; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. It was Mr. Mundy's wishes that he be cremated. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday February 24, 2003 at Beeny-Ferry Funeral Home, Sheldon, MO with Donald Swearingin officiating. Interment will follow in Sheldon Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday afternoon between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials may be made either to the American Legion Post 175, the American Legion Auxiliary # 175 or the Sheldon Christian Church in care of the funeral home.

Lloyd P. Naylor
Died On September 25, 2002
Lloyd P. Naylor, the son of Orrin H. and Helen A. Zolezzi Naylor, was born August 30, 1927 in Anthony, Kansas and died September 25, 2002 at Beverly Healthcare in Nevada at the age of 75 years and 25 days. Mr. Naylor was employed as an Experimental Utility Worker for the Beech-Raytheon Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas until his retirement. Survivors include three sisters, Mary Hess of Wakita, Oklahoma, Winnie Bigley and Harriett Ann Sebring of Wichita, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. October 5, 2002 at the Forest Park Cemetery in Anthony, Kansas under the direction of Williams Funeral Home. Local arrangements were under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Harriet Neill
Died On October 7, 2002
Harriet Ellen Neill, 81, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday afternoon, October 7, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a short illness. She was born October 18, 1920, in Dederick, MO, to Charley T. Hargrove and Bertha Hawkins Hargrove. She married William E. Neill on November 10, 1946, in Columbus, KS, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Neill lived nearly all her life in Vernon County. She graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1938. She was a member of the Sulfur Springs Baptist Church. She worked at Marmik's Clothing Store in Nevada for 10 years. She had also worked at ammunition plants during WW II in Kansas City and Chicago. Survivors in addition to her husband, William, include two daughters, Connie McHugh, Nevada, MO, and Bonnie Mitchell, Centralia, WA; one son, Billy Neill, Nashville, TN; four grandchildren, Robin McHugh, Nevada, MO, Padraic McHugh, Vancouver, WA, Casey McHugh, Bloomington, IL, and Anna Neill, Navarre, FL; one great-grandson, Devin McHugh, Nevada, MO; three brothers, Alan Hargrove, El Dorado Springs, MO, Charles Hargrove, Nevada, MO, and Richard Hargrove, Detroit, MI; three sisters, Lucille Nelander, St. Joseph, MO, Anna Mae Cox, and Ruby Sherman, both of Nevada, MO; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2002, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dederick, MO, with Pastor Kim Lekas officiating. Friends may call now and until 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. The family receives friends 7:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the charity of choice in her memory.

Earl "Swede" Nelson
Died On April 22, 2002
Earl I. 'Swede' Nelson, 94, Nevada, MO, passed way Monday morning, April 22, 2002, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, following a lengthy illness He was born June 30, 1907, in Taylor County, IA, to Joseph Nelson and Emma Sullivan Nelson. He married Pearl M. Gregg in 1928 in Osawatomie, KS, and she preceded him in death in 1939. Later he married Vesta Nadine Cline on January 12, 1941, in Nevada, MO. She preceded him in death in 1998. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1924 and served as a seaman on the U.S. Omaha. He began working for Missouri Pacific Railroad in Osawatmie, KS, in 1926. . He worked as a water service foreman for 46 years until his retirement in 1972. Mr. Nelson was a past President of the Missouri Pacific Booster Club. He had also been a member of the Nevada Elks Lodge #564 since 1961. He was an avid bowler in Nevada for many years. Survivors include one son, Larry Nelson, Springfield, MO; one daughter, LaVeta Conway, Las Vegas, NV; seven grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Committal services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, at the Sheldon Cemetery under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Sheldon Cemetery. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home. Elks Funeral Rites will be performed by the B.P.O.E. Lodge #564, Nevada, MO.

Paul Dee Nelson

Paul Dee Nelson, the son of Orville D. and Lula J. Bell Nelson, was born April 17, 1919 in Hatfield, Missouri and passed away December 8, 2001 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg, Kansas at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 21 days. He was united in marriage to the former Harriet R. Hubbard on August 25, 1938 in Axtell, Kansas and she preceded him in death September 12, 1995. He was then united in marriage to the former Maxine Taylor on December 13, 1996 in Peoria, Arizona. He moved to Nevada, Missouri in 1947 and was employed as a barber. He later farmed and owned and operated the M and N Trucking Company in Nevada until he retired. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was awarded the Victory Medal. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and the Osage Lodge 303 AF and AM of Nevada. Survivors include his wife, Maxine, of the home, one son, Jack Nelson of Morton Grove, Illinois, one daughter, Peggy Diggins of Sheldon, Missouri, one brother, Glen Nelson of Sun City West, Arizona, two sisters, Thelsa Sandericker and Lucille Pigg of Sun City West, Arizona, five grandchildren, Dawn Woods, Chris Warner, Amy Dahmer, Julie Nelson and Mark Nelson, four great grandchildren, Payton Dahmer, Paxton Dahmer, Bradyn Woods and Carsten Warner. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday December 13, 2001 at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel with Dr. Melvin W. Mabra officiating. Burial will be at Newton Burial Park. Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel and the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Larry Ness
Died On May 16, 2002

Larry Dale Ness, 61, Sheldon, MO passed away Thursday evening, May 16, 2002 at Freeman-West Hospital, Joplin, MO following a lengthy illness. He was born March 2, 1941 in Madison SD to the late Lester Ness and Florence Mutters Ness. Mr. Ness was raised and spent most of his life in Madison, SD. He graduated from Madison High School and attended Dakota College in Madison SD. He had worked as a teacher and an over the road truck driver. Before his retirement he worked in maintenance for the McDonald's Restaurant Corporation in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a member of the Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. He moved to Vernon County in 1990 and spent the remainder of his life here. Survivors include three brothers, Harold Ness, Sherwood, AR, Richard Ness, Bethlehem, PA, Leroy Ness, Eunice, LA; one aunt, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Ness wished to be cremated and have no services locally. Interment at a later date will be in Spencer Cemetery, Spencer, SD. Local arrangements are under the direction of Milster Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Debra Nichols

Debra D. Ricketts Nichols, 33, Granite City, IL, passed away Friday, February 7, 2003, at St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis, MO, following a short illness. She was born in Nevada, MO, on May 27, 1969, to Jerry D. Ricketts and Hazel N. Wilson. Debra was born and raised in the Moundville area and a member of the Moundville Methodist Church. She had lived and worked in Granite City, IL, for the past 10 years. Survivors include her parents, Orton and Hazel Wilson, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Nicole Renee Stone, of the home; one son, Charles Wayne Stone, of the home; five brothers, Jim Satterfield, Raymore, MO, Mike Ricketts, Walker, MO, Chris Ricketts, Moundville, Frank Wilson, Moundville, MO, and Wayne Wilson, Carthage, MO; maternal grandparents, Verner and Mildred Franks, Nevada, MO; special friends, Gary Boyer, Glen Carbon, IL, and Beth Meirath, St. Louis, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Jerry Ricketts. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 14, 2003, at the Welborn Cemetery, Moundville, MO, with Rev. Julia Nighswonger

Julia Irene Nighswonger age 73 of Nevada passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2003 at the Moore-Few Nursing Home in Nevada, MO. She was born on July 17, 1929 in Kansas City, MO to Cortes A. Tarter and Loara L. Porter Tarter. She was married to James H. Nighswonger on October 21, 1950 and he preceded her in death in 1994. Julia was raised in the Salvation Army Church where she learned as a young girl to love and care for people. She and James lived and farmed near Fulton, KS before coming to Nevada nearly 20 years ago. Although primary a homemaker, she had worked at Key Work Clothes in Ft. Scott, KS for a time. Julia was one of Jehovas Witnesses and regularly attended the congregation at Kingdom Hall in Nevada. She is survived by one son, Cecil E. Clendening of Corpus Christi, TX, two grandchildren, several great grandchildren, three sisters, Dorothy Mate of Nevada, Jill Hinton, Port Angeles, WA, and Joan Clapper, Copperas Cove, TX, three brother, Bud Tarter, Florida, Willie Tarter, Butler, MO, Freddie Tarter, Nevada, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovas Witnesses in Nevada. Elder Brad Miller will officiate. Ernest Joe Nordstrom, 71, Nevada, MO, passed away Friday night, March 15, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada. He was born May 30, 1930, in Greene County, MO to Ernest G. and Claire Louise Nordstrom. Mr. Nordstrom was a general laborer. He has resided in Nevada Manor for the past six years. Adalee Northington

Adalee Crawford Northington, 89, Des Moines, IA, formerly of Nevada passed away Friday, October 11, 2002 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, IA. She was born January 14, 1913 in Nevada, MO. She was married to John Ford Northington II and he preceded her in death in 1957. Mrs. Northington was raised in Nevada, MO. She moved from Nevada to Kansas City, MO where she lived for 16 years and then moved to Tucson, AZ, where she lived for 33 years before moving to Des Moines in 1996. She was employed as a harpist in her younger years and then taught elementary school in Kansas City and Tucson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tucson, AZ, P.E.O., a life member of the Teachers Association of Tucson; the American Harp Association, and she received her education from Cottey College in Nevada, MO, BA from University of Missouri in Kansas City, MO and MA from the University of Arizona. She was a professional harpist. Survivors include one son, John Ford Northington III, Henderson, NV; one daughter, Nan Carlson, Yucaipa, CA; one brother, Burl D. Crawford, Nevada, MO; two sisters, Mary Fern Crawford, Des Moines, IA, Earlene C. Stout, Nevada, MO; three grandchildren, Eric Carlson, Riverside, CA, Holly Carlson, Corona, CA and Heidi Casey, Carlsbad, CA; two great-grandchildren, Alex Carlson, Carlsbad, CA and Jacob Carlson, Riverside, CA. In addition to her husband John, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Sue Northington in 1968. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO with Dr. William Cox officiating. Edna Olson

Edna Mae Olson, 75, Horton, MO, passed away Saturday night, January 19, 2002, following a lengthy illness. She was born June 5, 1926, in Milo, MO, to Leonard Shepherd and Clara Glover Shepherd. She married John Olson on December 4, 1944, in Ft. Scott, KS, and he survives of the home. Mrs. Olson was born and raised in Vernon County and spent her entire lifetime here. She was a graduate from El Dorado Springs High School. She was a homemaker. She was very active in the Girl Scouts. In addition to her husband, John, survivors include one son, John Olson, Jr., Nevada, MO; one daughter, Leona Lovell, Hume, MO; two grandchildren; three brothers, Danny and Albert Pilcher, both of Nevada, and Dean Pilcher, Horton; and one half-brother, Lewis White, Lamar, CO. She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Olson, and two brothers, Elmo and Don Pilcher. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with George Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Balltown Cemetery, Horton, MO. John Henry Olson, Sr., 75, Horton, MO, passed away Thursday night, October 3, 2002, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following an illness of several weeks. He was born February 7, 1927, in Hardtner, KS, to John Leonard Olson and Effie Armetta Tharp Olson. He married Edna Mae Shepherd on December 4, 1944, in Ft. Scott, KS, and she preceded him in death on January 19, 2002. Mr. Olson was born and raised in the four state area, but spent the majority of his life in Vernon County. He served in the U.S. Army in WW II in Japan. Following the war, he returned to Vernon County where he worked for Farm & Home Savings for 20 years. Later he served as a rural mail carrier until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include two children, John Olson, Jr., Nevada, MO; Leona Lovell, Hume, MO; two grandchildren, Maryann Lovell, Hume, MO, and Dale Lovell, Nevada, MO; special family friend, Norma Collins, Dederick, MO; one brother, Ludwig Olson, Nevada, MO; and one sister, Gerna Lee Bowen, Raytown, MO. June Maxine Allen Compton, 83, Harwood, MO, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 28, 2002, in Cedar County Memorial Hospital, El Dorado Springs, MO, following a short illness. She was born June 18, 1919, in Havelock, NE, to Arthur Clinton Brundidge and Eddith Belle Hannon Brundidge. Mrs. Compton was the youngest of six children. She came to the Stotesbury, MO, area with her family at a young age. She lived the remainder of her life in the Vernon County area except the last six weeks when she was a resident of Community Springs Nursing Home in El Dorado Springs, MO. She remained loyal to the Nebraska Cornhuskers' football team watching every televised football game they had and knew whether they won or lost if not televised. June never met a stranger and had a sense of humor that never stopped which helped her through many rough situations. She always enjoyed her work because of the many people she met while working whether it was at Codrey's Laundry, Campbell's Greenhouses or the Nevada State Hospital and later answering the telephone for Compton's Refrigeration. June Maxine Brundidge married Orin O. J. Allen in November 1938. To this union were born four children who survive; one son, Orin Benjamin J. Allen, rural Harwood, MO; three daughters, Eddith Violet Allen Compton, rural Harwood, MO, Helen Clintina M. Allen Compton, Neosho, MO, and Linda Kay Allen Cummins, Sumner, WA. She was always very proud of her grandchildren, great-grandsons, and great, great-grandson and kept the refrigerator door covered with pictures of them. They are Carmen L. Compton Deragowski, James A. Compton, Richard Matthew, Orin Lucas, Hope M. and Jacquelynne Y. Compton, and Traci R. Pratt Chappell; great-grandsons, Jared Deragowski, Dustyn, Levi, and Nicholas Compton; and one great-great-grandson, Jordan Howard-Lee Deragowski. In August 1971, she married Leland Elbert Compton gaining four stepsons, one stepdaughter, six additional grandsons, eight additional granddaughters and numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was just as proud of them and always enjoyed reading or hearing about them. June was preceded in death by her two brothers, three sisters, her first husband, Orin Allen in 1968; second husband, Leland Elbert Compton in 1988; great-grandson, Danny Lane Compton, Jr., in 1964, and two stepsons. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Rev. Leland Trussell officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the charity of choice in her memory in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
