Lucas R. Velasquez – Age 83
A resident of White Rock passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, January 9, 2007. He was preceded in death by his son, Ronnie Velasquez and parents, Jose and Adelina Vargas. Lucas was know for his family band the “Sunsetters”. He was a very proud veteran who was always available for funeral detail. Lucas also worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Machinist for 34 years. He served in the Army during the WWII era. He was active in the Japan and Guada Canal Theatre with the 37th Infantry Division. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Velasquez of White Rock; oldest daughter, Sandee McDaid of White Rock, Leni Smith and husband David of Los Alamos, Carla Rambeau and husband Don of San Diego, CA; son, Alex Velasquez and fiancé Marquita of Arroyo Seco; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. BASIL C. DRAKE
Age 86, a resident of Santa Cruz, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2007. He was preceded in death by his son, David Basil Drake; brothers, Ronald and Donald Drake; sister, Janice Drake and parents, Sylvester and Dura Belle Drake. Basil was a WWII Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy and was the youngest chief in WWII.. He was a member of the Eagles since 1949, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a mine safety instructor in Juneau Alaska. He also worked for Pacific Gas Transmission Company for 20 years in Sand Point, Idaho. For 15 years he was a sawmill manager. Basil is survived by his wife of 64 years, Darleen Drake of Santa Cruz; children, Carolyn Ortega and husband Jose of Santa Cruz, Jeannette Seale and husband Joe of Alaska, Deanna Johnson and husband Jim of Washington, Galen E. Drake and wife Mai Ping of Alaska and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. The family of Basil C. Joe Valdez - Age 77
From Chimayo currently residing in Dixon passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents; Jacobo and Bernabe Valdez; daughter, Lucy Trujillo; son-in-law, Pablo Trujillo; brother-in-law, Fidel Martinez; sister-in-law, Emilia Martinez. Joe retired from the Los Alamos National Laboratory after 30 years of service. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids. He will be greatly missed by his family that was at his side. He is survived by his wife, Fedelina Valdez of Dixon; 2 step-daughters, Josie Medina and husband Clarence who cared for him until his death, also of Dixon and Filomena Martinez of San Pedro; grandson whom he raised, Dennis Trujillo of San Pedro; grandkids who were constantly at his side, LaVerne, Clarence, Freddie and Michelle Medina and Michelle Sanchez all of Dixon; sister, Daisy Madrid of Las Vegas, NV; 4 daughters, Mary Ann, Noel, Priscilla and Linda Valdez; son-in-law, Daniel Martinez of Chamita; numerous other grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Jose L. Gallegos - Age 93
A resident of the Espanola Nursing and Rehabilitation Center passed away of natural causes on Friday, January 12, 2007. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Delfinio and Francisquita Gallegos; his wife, Maria Lucia Gallegos; and brothers, Jose Pedro and Lorenzo Gallegos. Mr. Gallegos was a member of the Community of Abiquiu. He was a sheep herder and would travel to Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Mr. Gallegos would bus tables at Matildas and the Super Spoon restaurants. Anthony worked for Santa Fe Law Enforcement and was Captain for the Rio Arriba Sheriffs Department. He also worked as a bus driver for many years for the Rio Arriba County Schools and recently retired from the Rio Arriba County. Genaro “Jerry” Lazaro Maestas
Age 67, a resident of Upper San Pedro passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Benigna Maestas; brothers, Frank and Simon Maestas; sisters, Ernestina Montoya and Isabel Blea; beloved nephews, Joseph Polaco and Michael Roybal. Genaro was retired from LANL after 28 years of service. He was very active at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He adored his family and spending time with his family who will miss him greatly. He also loved working in his garden and always had his yard looking nice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Estanislado and Vicenta Gonzales; brothers, Dolores and Carmen Gonzales; sisters, Corine Ortiz, Mary Duran, Juanita Duet, Irene Serna and Ramona Gonzales. Julio was a carpenter and locksmith with the Zia Company for 35 years. He was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included many wood working projects for his family. He was also an avid hunter fisherman and gardener. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Opal Evans; son, Lloydray Evans and sisters, Juanita and Olita. Jim was a very hard worker who would have worked 7 days out of the week if he could. He was a very good father and excellent grandfather who would always provide for his family. He will be greatly missed by his family. Jim is survived by his wife, Louise Evans of Abiquiu; children, Aubrey Evans of Abiquiu, Debbie Carrillo and husband Charles of Santa Fe and Ricky Evans of Texas; sisters, Shirley and Linda; brother, Charles of Texas; grandchildren, Estrellita Carrillo-Garcia and husband Larry, Roan Carrillo, Danielray Evans and Ryan Chacon; great-grandchild, Larry Angel Garcia and numerous other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends. Age 98, a resident of Nambe, New Mexico passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon L. Montoya; son, Jose Leroy Montoya; daughter, Mary Roybal; parents, Nabor and Celestina Maestas; grandchildren, Steve Montoya, Lourdes Valdez and Ursula Duran; sisters, Dolores and Onofre. Frances was a very humble, loving and joyous person who had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be missed dearly by her family. She is survived by her sons, Jose Benito and wife Lorraine of Nambe, Ramon Ignacio and wife Socorro of Santa Fe, and Michael Alfonso Montoya of Nambe; daughter, Fernanda Giron and husband Guadalupe of Pojoaque; 2 sisters, Estella Quintana and husband George of Nambe, and Basilia Hofflinger of Kansas; son-in-law, Luis Roybal and daughter-in-law Virginia Montoya both of Nambe; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends also survive her. JOSE “JOE” ELIAS MARTINEZ
Age 79, a resident of Cuarteles, was called home to our heavenly Father on January 26, 2007. Jose died peacefully at the family home after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Michael Martinez; parents, Adan and Elisa Martinez of Espanola; brothers, Ramon Tito Martinez and wife Ruperta, Henry Martinez and wife Margie, Tony V. Martinez and Elias Martinez; sisters, Aurora Martinez and Federico, Josie Martinez Garcia and husband Milton, Sally Herrera and husband Bernabe, Ruby Rubideaux and husband Jose M., Ernestine Mitchell and husband Ben, and many nieces and nephews and also preceded in death by Father and Mother-in-law: Alejandro and Eloisa Esquibel of Cuarteles. Jose and his wife Dora were devoted esclavos of the Sangre De Cristo Chapel in Cuarteles for 50 years. Joe and Dora were married at La Iglesia De Santa Cruz De La Canada on June 23, 1951 and remained devoted parishioners of that Church the rest of his life. Joe was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Germany on security detail shortly after World War II. When he returned home, Joe continued his education at Coin Electrical School in Chicago, Ill. where he became a certified electrician. He worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the badge office for over 30 years. After retiring from the AEC he worked as a security inspector for Mason and Hanger, guarding the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Joe was a devoted family man and his family always came first in his life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Aurora (Dora) Esquibel Martinez of Cuarteles; sons, Ronald J. Martinez and wife Doreen, Archie C. Martinez and his wife Soledad, Joe Mark Martinez and Adam L. Martinez and wife Susan all of Cuartelez; grandchildren, LouAnna, Ronald, Monica and Lorenzo Martinez, Amanda Martinez and companion Steve, Nicole Martinez and companion Ben, Arthur Martinez, Justin Maestas, Adan Martinez, and Elias Martinez and great grandchild Gabriel Sanchez and sister-in-law Anita Martinez of Espanola and many other relatives and friends. The following will serve as pallbearers, Ronald J. Martinez, Archie Martinez, Joe Mark Martinez, Adam Martinez, Ronald K. Martinez, and Justin Maestas. Honorary pallbearers are Veronica Lopez, Nora Arellano, and Erlinda Garcia. Age 60, a resident of Chamita passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2007 following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vivianita Herrera; grandmother who raised him, Anita Herrera; Infant daughter; Infant grandson; mother-in-law, Eufemia Martinez; grandfather, Benjamin Herrera; Infant sister. Gilbert loved to play basketball. He was very active with the Chamita Fire Department. He loved hunting and being in the outdoors. He loved all sports in general. He was a huge Lakers fan. He loved his job at P.T.L.A putting in 24 years of dedication. He also served in the United States Navy. He was a great husband being married to Marcella for 40 years, a great father, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife Marcella A. Herrera of Chamita; son, Jimmy Herrera and wife Kimberly of El Llano; sisters, Sylvia Herrera and husband Marty of La Villita, Esther Trujillo and husband Mark of El Rancho; aunt who helped raise Gilbert, Flora Herrera and companion, Jose Gallegos of La Villita; brother, Robert Herrera and wife Ida of La Mesilla; brothers, Ben Herrera and wife Lorraine of Espanola, David Herrera of Espanola; brother-in-law, Lorenzo Martinez and wife Rebecca of Canjilon; sisters-in-law, Julia Garcia and husband Augustine of Espanola, Flora Garcia of Canjilon, Sally Montano also of Canjilon; God son, Gabriel Trujillo of El Rancho; God daughter, Debbie Gonzales of Ojo Caliente; numerous nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
