ROY D. BENNETT, JR.
August 25th, 2004
Funeral services for Roy Davis Bennett, Jr., 60, will be 2:00 PM Monday, August 30, 2004 at McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews with Mark Wilson, Pulpit Minister of the Andrews Church of Christ and Bryan Hoffman, Nephew, officiating. Burial will follow in the Andrews West Cemetery.
He was born to Roy Davis Bennett, Sr. and Neva Christine Bennett in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 5, 1944. He passed from this life into the hands of the Lord on August 25,2004 at the V.A. Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Roy D. had resided in Arizona for the past five years. He died from complications due to diabetes.
Roy Davis Bennett, Jr., known as Roy D to his friends and family, moved to Andrews in 1946. He completed all of his schooling in Andrews and graduated from Andrews High School in 1962. He attended Lubbock Christian College and graduated from Oklahoma Christian College with a degree in history. Soon after graduation, he was drafted into the US Army and left for Vietnam. While in Vietnam, he was exposed to Agent Orange. After his service, he went back to Oklahoma City working in real estate and physical therapy. He resided there for many years and made many friends, but he soon realized he was in very bad health and began to look for a place for treatment. After much research, he settled in Tucson, Arizona. He felt it was the best veteran's hospital in the country. This place was a blessing in his life. He made many friends there; both veterans and others that helped him maintain some normalcy in his life. Roy D. worked very hard in the veterans association there. He helped many get their disability settlements. He was also a very political person and loved and worked hard for his Democratic party. He became acquainted with Senator John McCain, who helped him finally receive a service-connected disability. He would laugh and say, "a republican finally helped me".
Roy D. had many old friends in Andrews. One of his faithful friends was with him the day he passed from this earth. Jerry Duley was his earthly angel and our family wants to personally tell him thank you. Jerry went way beyond the call of duty. Two other friends that were good to him and checked on him daily were Roger King and Tom French, both of Tucson.
The other love in Roy's life was his church home. He was an active member in the East Bieu Church of Christ in Tucson. Don and Evelyn Avers and Bill and Carolyn Elliott also helped with his care. He went to church as often as he could and he loved the Lord. He can now see and walk without pain, and his family and friends rejoice.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Davis Bennett, Sr. on November 12, 1991 and a niece, Virginia Christine Hoffman on December 3, 1970.
He is survived by his loving and wonderful mother: Neva Christine Bennett of Andrews; 2 sisters: Phyliss Bain and husband Bill of Shreveport, Louisiana and Ellen and Don Hoffman of Andrews; 3 nephews: Billy Bain, Jr. of Louisiana, Bradly Bain of Louisiana, and Bryan Hoffman of Andrews; 2 nieces: Deborah McBride of Louisiana and Angela Porter of Andrews.
Again, we would like to thank the many friends that prayed for our beloved Roy, and a special thank you to Jerry for all you did for him.
Memorials may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans or the Andrews Church Of Christ.
