Robert Wallo
IRON RIVER — Robert J. Wallo, 71, of Iron River passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Iron County General Hospital in Iron River.
He was born Dec. 26, 1929, in Escanaba, son of the late Frank and Mildred (Saxon) Wallo. He attended school in Escanaba.
In 1948 he moved from Escanaba to Iron River, where he worked at the Riverside Bowling Alley. In 1949 he was employed by the M.A. Hanna Mining Co. in the area mines.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. After his discharge he returned to work for the M.A. Hanna Mining Co., retiring in 1980.
He married the former Ellen Boodry Harris on Feb. 14, 1988, in Crystal Falls. The couple made their home in Iron River.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Wallo Colberg, and a sister, Janet Vincent.
He leaves his wife, Ellen; two sons, Robert (Doris) Wallo Jr. of Georgia and John Wallo of Georgia; four stepsons, Andy (Dee) Johnson of Milwaukee, Lester Boodry of Iron River, Dale (Sally) Paffrath of Gary, Ind., and Arnold (KC) Harris of Iron River; two daughters, Arlene Bozile of Iron River and Georgia (Jack) Pine of Spain; two brothers, Jack Wallo of Louisville, Ky., and Bill (Jo Ann) Beaudin of Iron Mountain; two sisters, Dolly Blandeu of Negaunee and Connie of Milwaukee; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Iron River.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church. Rev. Michael Rucinski will officiate.
Members of the West Side Veterans Council will accord military rites.
Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River.
The Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River is in charge of arrangements.

James Santi
IRON MOUNTAIN — James Santi, 77, of 517 Wilson St., Kingsford, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He leaves his two daughters, Christine (Irving) James of Florence, Wis., and Louise Santi of Madison, Wis.; two brothers, Joseph (Janice) Santi of Spread Eagle, Wis., and Paul “Morico” Santi of Crystal Falls; a sister, Lorraine Keller of Arizona; a grandson, James and his friend, Lisa Sandona of Crystal Falls; a great-grandson, James Freeman; a very special friend, Helen Mann of Panama City, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
The family is being served by the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Alfred Gelbke
APPLETON, Wis. — Alfred M. Gelbke, 92, of Appleton died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at his home.
Al was born Oct. 16, 1908, in Garfield, N.J., son of the late Carl A. and Anna (Koenig) Gelbke Sr.
He married Mardelle Reimer on Aug. 11, 1936, in Menasha, Wis.
Al will be remembered for his love of gardening, his tree farm, his golfing and fishing skills, not to mention his “whoppers.”
He enjoyed 43 years in the pulp and paper industry with a special interest in research and the development of new products. His career began with the Fox River Paper Co. and ended with Kimberly-Clark in Munising. He retired in 1973 and returned to Appleton in 1987.
Al was always involved in numerous clubs and activities, including Rotary Club, Alger County Historical Society, and various fishing and hunting clubs.
He leaves his wife of 64 years, Mardelle; his daughter, Nancy (Royce) Adair of Montrose, Colo.; his four grandchildren, Scot Adair (Judy Desjarden) of Munising, Tamra Adair (Jay Hiserote) of Portland, Ore., Mark (Susan) Adair of Muncie, Ind., and Brian Adair (Cindy Wong) of Newark, Calif.; his six great-grandchildren, Mara and Ashlyn Hiserote, Jordon Heathfield, Amy, Michael and Matthew Adair; his brothers, Paul (Dorothy) Gelbke of Appleton and Carl (Evelyn) Gelbke of Appleton; his sisters-in-law, Agnes Gelbke of Appleton and Katherine Gelbke of Green Bay, Wis., and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Wickmann Funeral Home in Appleton.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Fr. Robert Karuhn will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Menasha, Wis.

Wayne Carlson
FOSTER CITY — Wayne E. (Coyote) Carlson, 63, of Hanging Rock Road, Spruce Pine, N.C., died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in Linville Hospital.
He was born Nov. 15, 1937, son of the late Einar Ralph and Eleanor Mae (Sipchen) Carlson of Hardwood.
He worked all his life as a logger, upon moving to N.C., where he worked as a nurseryman and landscaper.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family and many friends.
He leaves his sisters, Margaret (Courtney) Dahn of Felch, Mildred (John) LaPointe of Helps, Donna (Larry) Dillabough of Hardwood, Kay Nelson of Escanaba, Linda (John) Listle and Patty (Bernard) Kleikamp, both of Gladstone; two brothers, Bruce Carlson and Mike (Sandy) Carlson, both of Hardwood; three very special friends, Jim Weisman, Linda Weisman and Ed Richardson of North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Mission Covenant Church in Foster City. Pastor Lloyd Nelson will officiate.
The Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Newland, N.C. is serving the family.

Jean Kaltinger
IRON MOUNTAIN — Jean M. Kaltinger, 77, of 710 Tobin Road, Channing, died Wednesday afternoon, April 25, 2001, at Lexington Health Care in Streamwood, Ill.
Jean was born June 18, 1923, in Channing, daughter of the late John and Virginia (Mikottis) Fende. She grew up in Channing and graduated from Channing High School in 1941.
She married Alfred Kaltinger in June of 1947, in Chicago. They lived in Elmhurst, Ill.
Jean was employed by Western Electric and retired in 1985. Upon her retirement, Jean and Alfred moved back to Channing.
She leaves two sons, James (Patricia) Kaltinger of Streamwood, Ill., and John Kaltinger of Elmhurst, Ill.; a sister, Sandra (Robert) Rock of Lexington Park, Md.; three brothers, Lawrence Fende of Channing, Leo (Doris) Fende of Joliet, Ill., and Ivan (Jean) Fende of Marquette; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Alfred on Feb. 5, 1989; a son, Clifford Kaltinger, in 1998, and a brother, Frank Fende.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose Catholic Church in Channing.
A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Fr. George Kuppayil will officiate.
Burial will be in Channing Cemetery.

David Bongi
IRON MOUNTAIN — David “Tusk” Bongi, 76, of 840 Hamilton Ave., Kingsford, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Ettore and Delmira (Carpeneti) Bongi. He grew up and attended school in Iron Mountain.
He married Phyllis Mattson on May 18, 1946, in Chicago. They resided in Chicago for many years, at which time David attended all the Cub games. They moved to Iron Mountain in 1948.
David was employed by Ford Motor Co., Grede Foundry, worked his milk and paper route, and was a security guard for J&J Security.
He was an avid Cub’s fan, never missing them play.
David also enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting and attending all the local sporting events.
He leaves his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Richard (Gaynelle) Bongi of Vulcan and Brian (Violet) Bongi of Iron Mountain; a daughter, LuAnn (Robert) Hanson of Columbia Heights, Minn.; a brother, Orlando Bongi of Iron River; five sisters, Josephine (Marco) Lubivich of Chisholm, Minn., Genevieve (Earl) Wall of Iron Mountain, Isabelle Dierkens of Norway, Evelyn (William) Bouchard of Kingsford, and Mary (Ralph) Irish of Manistique; nine grandchildren, Danny Joe Bongi, David Alto, Kevin Alto, Katie Gallino, Jeff Gallino, Jennifer Bongi, Dawn Hanson, Lisa Hanson and Melissa Hanson; eight great-grandchildren, Jamie, Morgan, Derek, Cody, Tyler, Logan, Alayna and Brandon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son, David Wayne, and a brother, Louis Bongi.
Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Pastor Peter Jonas will officiate.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Dr. Terry Palmer
CRYSTAL FALLS — Dr. Terry L. Palmer, 53, of 100 S. 5th St., Crystal Falls, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Iron County General Hospital in Iron River.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Rev. Elbert Dulworth will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.

Clifford J. Cook
IRON MOUNTAIN — Clifford J. Cook, 78, of White Birch Village, Breitung Township, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born Nov. 26, 1922, in Burton, lower Michigan, son of Charles and Essie Valentine.
He married Ruth Shaw on May 16, 1945. She preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 1994.
Clifford came to Iron Mountain in 1969 from Grand Blanc, lower Michigan. He was in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. He participated in action at New Munda, British Solomon Islands and at Guadal Canal.
He worked for Western Electric for 40 years, where he retired as a supervisor. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, his family and casino adventures.
Clifford is survived by three sons, David (Debbie) Cook of Grand Blanc, Doug (Nancy) Cook of Kingsford and Dennis (Laura) Cook of Green Bay, Wis.; a brother, Gordon Cook of Grand Blanc; a sister, Virginia Wares of Florida; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Shaw and Cliff (June) Apers; two sisters-in-law, Judith (Lloyd) Sims and Janet (Leland) Dane; eight grandchildren, Dale (Kim), Darrin (Wendy), Daniel, Donald, Amanda (Mike), Eric, Melinda (Foster), and Emily; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Tiffany.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Edward.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be at Cemetery Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or to Cancer Research.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian Milan
CRANDON, Wis. — Lillian A. Milan, 76, of Crystal Falls and formerly of Armstrong Creek, Wis., died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Iron County General Hospital in Iron River.
Lillian had a strong faith in God and she enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing and writing letters to keep all the family informed of what was happening.
She was also famous for her canning, especially her pickles, “Lill’s Dills.”
She was most proud of what she considered the greatest accomplishment of her life, her four children. She also loved those she considered the greatest joys in her life, her grandchildren.
She will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her.
She leaves three daughters, Monica (Kirby) Clark of Garden Grove, Calif., Janice (Ron) Toscano of Wildemor, Calif., and Tina (Bill) St. John of Crystal Falls; a son, Nicholas Millan of Armstrong Creek, Wis.; three sisters, Stella Swift of Armstrong Creek, Florence (Frank) Demko of Fence, Wis., and Joyce Gallardo of Armstrong Creek; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and six siblings, Mary Renkas, Ray, Joe, Charlie, Helena and John Sadowski.
Friends may call upon the family after 9 a.m. Monday at the Armstrong Creek Community Center. At 10:15 a.m., a formal funeral procession will take Lillian from the Community Center to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church where Fr. Ed Nowakowski will lead the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.
Following the Mass, Lillian will again be taken in formal procession to the Pine Hill Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
The Suminski Funeral Home of Crandon, Wis., was given the privilege of handling the arrangements.

Chester Crantz
VULCAN — Chester F. Crantz, 81, of W4697 Main St., Vulcan, died peacefully Friday, June 8, 2001, at his home.
He was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Vulcan, son of the late Ferdinand and Mary (Orler) Crantz. Chester attended Vulcan High School and Michigan College of Mining and Technology (Michigan Tech).
He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945, flying 27 missions. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the EAME Theatre Campaign Ribbon with one Battle Star.
Chester married the former Janette Bergen on Aug. 5, 1943, in Vulcan. Together they lived and worked in the Detroit area, returning to Iron Mountain from 1957. Along with his wife, he owned and operated the Town & Country Motel in Iron Mountain from 1957-1973.
Chet was a former member of the Northland Beagle Club and the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Upon retirement in 1973, he moved back to his childhood home in Vulcan. Chester attended many area craft shows offering handmade children’s wooden toys and doll houses in addition to other crafts.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janette; one daughter, Judy (Carlston) Pollard of Iron Mountain; two grandchildren, Joyce (Lance) Bashaw of Iron Mountain and Ken (Denise) Pollard of Omaha, Neb.; two great-grandchildren, Melissa and Megan Bashaw of Iron Mountain; one sister, Sr. Alfreda Crantz, S.C.N. of Louisville, Ky.; an aunt, Emma Orler of Green Bay, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan. A Mass will follow visitation at 11 a.m. at the church. Fr. William Callari will officiate. Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery.
The family requests that flowers be omitted.

Fannie Haapala
CRYSTAL FALLS — Fannie M. Haapala, 98, of 400 Superior Ave., Crystal Falls, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Iron County General Hospital in Iron River.
Fannie was born June 30, 1902, in Tyosa, Finland, daughter of the late Victor and Hilda (Pennala) Wuorenma. Fannie moved to Amasa as a young girl and attended the Crystal Falls schools.
She married Albert Haapala on July 14, 1922, in Amasa. He preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1950.
Fannie worked as a dining room attendant at Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Ill. She lived in both Lake Forest and Rushville, Mo. before moving back to Crystal Falls in 1993. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Amasa.
She leaves two sons, John “Bob” Haapala and William “Pete” (Barb) Haapala, both of Gibson Lake, Crystal Falls Township; one daughter, Gertrude “Trudy” (Edward) Kidwell of Effingham, Kan.; one brother, Sulo “John” (Helvi) Wuorenma of Waukegan, Ill.; one sisters, Ainie Lehto of Crystal Falls; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Toivo Wuorenma; three sisters, Lulu Martinson, Hilma Jarvi and Ines Dreyer; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home in Crystal Falls. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Dr. Kim Beckman will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
Memorials can be made to Bethany Lutheran Church in Amasa.

Gordon Skog
LOWER PINE CREEK — Gordon Skog, 77, of Lower Pine Creek, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, after a long illness at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
Gordon was born November 27, 1923, in Randville, the son of Richard and Marietta (Hawkins) Skog.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees on September 16, 1943. After boot camp, he spent 2 1/2 years in the 135th Naval Construction Battalion, serving in the Hawaiian Islands, Tinian, and Okinawa.
After being honorably discharged on April 2, 1946, he earned his private pilot’s license. He attended Ferris State University and obtained his high school diploma. He later took several short courses at Michigan State University.
Gordon married the former Marie Johnson September 11, 1948, in Norway and spent several years farming in the Lower Pine Creek area. He was an assistant inseminator for Michigan Artificial Breeders for 16 years, was a milk tester and worked for Grede Foundry.
His last 20 working years were spent driving long haul for Smeester Brothers. Upon retirement, he was a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery.
He was life member and Past Master of the Norway Lodge 382, Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan and a life member and Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Norway Chapter 251.
Gordon was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Norway.
He especially loved his family, deer hunting and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Marie; seven children, Allyn (Robert) Travis of Milwaukee, Wis., Donna (Harold) Grey of Dallas, Pa., Marcia (Mark) Kissinger of Eau Claire, Wis., Amy (Roger) Dixon of Hamilton Lakes, Richard (Susan) Skog of Edgerton, Wis., David (Judy) Skog of Norway and Mark (Carol) Skog of Norway; 17 grandchildren, Sarah and Robert Travis; Cody, Callie, Micayala, and Taylor Grey; Aaron, Hope and Kyle Kissinger; Kaitlin, Samuel, Michael, Terry, Scott, Robert, Christopher, and Daniel Skog; two sisters, Doris Nelson of of Iron Mountain and Fern Simon of Green Bay, Wis., a brother, James (Margery) Skog of Indian River; an aunt, Marion Nelson of Merriman; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Miner Funeral Home in Norway. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Norway. Rev David Wallis will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Norway Township Cemetery.
Gordon’s grandchildren will serve as his honorary pallbearers. Pallbearers will be Mike Conery, Myron Fetterly, Fred Campbell, Ralph Meiner, Robert Disbro and Wayne Theisen.
Memorials may be made to the American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation, 1800 Century Place, Suite 250, Atlanta, Ga. 30345 or to the Building Fund of Grace United Methodist Church.

Mary Pellerin
KINGSFORD — Mary Pellerin, 86, formerly of 125 Case St., Kingsford, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at the ManorCare Nursing Home in Kingsford.
Mary was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Hermansville, daughter of the late Matt and Magdalena (Ilionis) Boldin. She had been a resident of this area since 1970.
She married Frederick Pellerin on June 4, 1932. He preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1995.
She leaves many nieces and nephews including, Ed (Bev) Pilot of Iron Mountain, James (Marilyn) Pilot of Milwaukee, Rudy (Claire) Pilot of Peshtigo, Wis., and Bev (Bill) Henry of Milwaukee; a sister, Dorthea Krznarich of Milwaukee, and a sister-in-law, Bernice Machalk of Ann Arbor.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford.
The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Brian Pilot, Jeff Pilot, Bill Henry, Rudy Pilot, James Pilot and Ed Pilot.

Margaret Nygaard
IRON MOUNTAIN — Margaret Nygaard, 83, of Iron Mountain, formerly of Hermansville, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services in Kingsford.
Margaret was born on April 3, 1918, in Norway, daugther of the late William and Emma (Hiller) Jansen.
She married Clifford Nygaard on July 13, 1940, in Hermansville, where they farmed and lived for 41 years. Clifford preceded her in death on July 2, 1981.
She moved to White Birch Village in 1981 and attended Quinnesec United Methodist Church.
Margaret is survived by two grandsons, Paul (Dawn) Nygaard and Greg (Bridget) Nygaard, both of Green Bay, Wis.; a great-granddaughter, Megan Nygaard; a daughter-in-law, Mary Nygaard of Iron Mountain; two brothers, Edward (Judith) Jansen of Iron Mountain and Ronald (Nickie) Jansen of North Muskegon; two sisters-in-law, Helen Jansen of MIlwaukee and Aurelia Jansen of Norway; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, George Nygaard in 1989; a sister, Myrtle Vanivelt; and three brothers, Irving, Howard and George Jansen.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Miner Funeral Home in Norway.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Pauline Rupe, pastor of Quinnesec United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Norway Township Cemetery.

Helen Canney
KINGSFORD — Helen C. Canney, 70, of 1800 Markosen St., Kingsford, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 10, 2001.
Helen was born Sept. 22, 1930, in Reedsville, Wis., daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (Tikalsky) Novak. She graduated from Reedsville High School.
She married Bernard Canney on June 2, 1951. They had been residents of Kingsford since 1978. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1994.
Helen was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford and the treasurer of St. Ann’s Circle. She distributed communion to the sick and shut-ins, and taped the Sunday Masses on a weekly basis for the past 20 years. Her church was the center of her life.
She leaves three daughters, Margaret (Ronald) Baciak of Vulcan, Barbara (Nathan) Maynard of Bass Lake, Iron Mountain, and Eileen Canney of Aurora, Wis.; a brother, Ralph Novak of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Gertrude Puta of Mishicot, Wis., and two grandchildren, MM3 Ryan Canney of the U.S. Navy, South Carolina, and Sean McDonald of Bliss, N.Y.
She was also preceded in death by six brothers, Ray, Charles Jr., John, Joe, Jerome and Larry Novak, and two sisters, Gertrude and Mary.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at 11 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Mary Vecellio
VULCAN — Mary Vecellio, 97, of West Highland, 2701 First Ave. South, Escanaba, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.
She was born Nov. 28, 1903, in Wausau, Wis., daughter of the late Mary (Costa) and Louis Cristanelli. She was raised by her grandparents in Kelly, Wis. She moved to Norway when she was 16-years-old. There she married Florian J. Vecellio.
Mrs. Vecellio was a member of St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan for most of her life, more recently a member of St. Anne’s Parish in Escanaba.
During her adult life she was deeply involved in social and volunteer organizations, and held office in many. She served as the president of the Iron Mountain Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, regent of the Norway Daughters of Isabella, and president of the Norway Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Vecellio was a member of Norway-Vulcan Woman’s Club, a member and council member of the Michigan State University Extension Club for many years.
She served as a teacher’s aide for many years at the Holy Spirit School in Norway. Throughout her life she was awarded many accolades for her excellent level of participation, achievements and contributions, among which was being named Dickinson County Homemaker of the Year in 1974.
Mrs. Vecellio was also frequently acknowledged and rewarded for devising innovative and creative recipes, a lifetime interest of hers.
She leaves three children, O.L. (Jo Izzo) Vecellio of Port Charlotte, Fla., Maryann (Manfred) Cerasoli of Escanaba, and Lucy (Philip) Hawley of Davis, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Florian; her granddaughter, Jane Cerasoli Behnke; her son-in-law, Philip Hawley, and three brothers, Louis, Ernest, and Florian Cristanelli.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan followed by a Requiem Mass at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery.
