Col. Smith
Col. Percy C. Smith, USAF (RET), 86, of Warner Robins, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 29 in the chapel of Heritage Memorial Funeral Home with burial in Parkway Memorial Gardens.
Col. Smith was born in Sidon, MS in 1916. He contributed over 40 years of service to his country, earning his pilot’s wings in 1942 and flying during World War II and returning to active duty for the Korean War. He retired from the U.S.A.F. Reserve Headquarters at Robins Air Force Base.
Survivors include his wife, Lela Smith of Warner Robins; his five children, Mary Hickman of Gloucester, VA, Carolyn French of Atlanta, Jane Caswell Smith of Charlottesville, VA, Percy C. Smith Jr. of Gray, and Joe Q. Smith of Atlanta; his three grandchildren, two great-grandsons, and, three sisters.
Heritage Memorial Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Mrs Edwards
Daisy Edwards, of Turner Woods Road, died Friday, March 28, 2003. Funeral services were held Monday, March 31 privately at Riverside Cemetery in Macon.
Mrs. Edwards was born in Coleman, Georgia, and had lived in Macon for the past sixty-three years. She was the daughter of the late William Richard Edwards and Eugenia Crozier Edwards. She had worked at the Macon Naval Ordinance Plant and a was a Methodist.
Mrs. Edwards is survived by several friends, including Tina Mills and Emily Allen, both of Gray.

Mrs. Grinstead
Cleo Hawthorne Grinstead, 89, of Gordon, died Saturday March 29, 2003.. Funeral services were held Monday, March 31, in the Gordon Church, with internment at Hardies Chapel Church of Christ Cemetery. Ministers Bill Taylor, Harry Goff and Glenn Schliebner officiated.
Mrs. Grinstead was a lifelong resident of Gordon and daughter of the late Richard Joel & Minnie Cobb Hawthorne. She was preceded in death by her husband, F.K. Grinstead, Sr.; son, Jake, daughter, Barbara, three brothers, Glen, Cecil & William C. Hawthorne, two sisters, Evelyn Methvin & Lucille Butts. Mrs. Grinstead was an active volunteer at the Gordon Library and member of the Gordon Woman’s Club and the Gordon Church of Christ.
Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law: Carol & Art Silsby of Gordon, son and daughter-in-law: William J. “Chip” & Martha Grinstead also of Gordon, five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, a sister: Myrtice Neal-Athens and various nieces and nephews.

Ms. Barnes
Larrie Nadine Barnes died May 24, 2003. Funeral services were held Friday, May 30 in Adams Tabernacle CME Church in Haddock.
Ms. Barnes was a dedicated member of Adams Tabernacle CME Church. She was a graduate of Gray High School and attended Fort Valley State College. She was a retiree of Mattie Wells Elementary School.
Ms. Barnes is survived by her devoted children, Marchand Barnes, Talisa Barnes and Gawona Barnes of Haddock; brother, James T. Singleton of Macon; sister, Ethel Burney of Haddock; seven grandchildren.

Mr. Cheek
James W. Cheek, 85, died Saturday, May 24, 2003. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at Clark’s Funeral Home in Hawkinsville with burial in Browndale Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. David Primm officiated.
Mr. Cheek, husband of Frances Caldwell Cheek, was born in Hawkinsville, the son of the late Clifford Cheek and Roberta Spears. He was the brother of six siblings: Meredith Cheek, Franklin Cheek, Ora Lee Slade,Frances Thompson, and Sara Stuart, all of Hawkinsville, and Virginia Buchanan of Warner Robins. During his 26-year career in the United States Army, he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant and served his country honorably in World War II and the Korean War. He earned many accolades, including nine Battle Stars and the Bronze Star after serving in the 1st Battalion, “C” Company, 66th Regiment, 2nd Armored Division, “Hell on Wheels.”
Mr. Cheek is survived by three children, Gary Cheek with wife Geneva from Cleveland, GA, Jacqueline Welch with husband Earl of Mason, TN, and Mitzie Cribb with husband Buster of Gray; his grandchildren, Pamela Trouy, Debra Biggs, Andrew Webb, Larry Webb, David Welch, Wendy Garrison, Charles Nathan Webb and Tracy Cheek; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Crumpler infant
Daniel Wesley Crumpler, 1, of Old Fortville Road, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Monday, June 02, 2003, graveside at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Gray. Elder Wesley Watkins officiated.
Daniel was a lifetime resident of Jones County and was the infant son of Jerrol Wesley Crumpler, Jr. and Katrina Smith Crumpler.
Daniel is survived by his parents: Wes and Katrina Crumpler of Gray; his grandparents: Jerrol and Betty Crumpler of Crawford County and Joe and Jackie Cassetty of Gray; and by his great-grandmothers: Florence Nixon of Suffolk, Virginia and Frances Collins of Macon.

Harry Lee Gaskill, 67, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Elam Baptist Church with burial in Cedar Ridge Cemetery. Rev. Gary Thomas officiated.
Mr. Gaskill was born in Morgantown, West Virginia and had lived in Gray for the past eighteen years. He was the son of the late Charles Gaskill and Marie Martin Gaskill. Mr. Gaskill was a member of Elam Baptist Church in Gray.
Mr. Gaskill is survived by his wife: Margaret Gaskill of Gray; sons: Jason Gaskill of Gray and Robert Gaskill of Forsyth; and his daughters: Katie Gaskill and Jeannie Johnson, both of Gray, and Tracy Curry of Forsyth.

Mrs. Hoover
Lula B. Hoover died Friday, May 30, 2003. Funeral services were held Monday, June 2, 2003 in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. Rev. Rodney Body officiated.
Mrs. Hoover was born in Taylor County to the late Bob and Lizzie Bailey. She was the widow of Henry L. Hoover and Bone Hammock. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gracie Elizabeth Shupe. Mrs. Hoover was a member of Southside United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her three sons, Johnny Hammock of Jones County, Larry Hammock of Macon, and William Hammock of Macon; twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith
Delbert “Del” Wilcher Smith, 82, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003. Funeral services were held Friday, May 30, 2003 at Lynmore United Methodist Church with burial in Macon Memorial Park. Rev. Bryan Gerstel, Rev. Bob Moon and Rev. F. Timothy Steffen officiated.
Mrs. Smith, wife of the late Elmer Lyman Smith, was born in Treutlen County, the daughter of the late John Frank and Lizzie Estelle Layton Wilcher. She was the sister of the late Hilda W. Berryhill. Living in Macon since 1946, she had worked with the Cooperative Extension Service, the Naval Ordnance Plant and Robins Air force Base.Mrs. Smith was a member of the Shaw Memorial Sunday School Class and the Church choir.
Mrs.Smith is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel L. and Miriam M. Smith of Macon; her granddaughters, Elizabeth Jane Smith and Catherine Anne Smith of Macon; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Jackie Wilcher of Macon, J.F. and Bettye Wilcher of Leesburg, Fl; her sister and brother-in-law, Ruby W. and Harrell Hudson of Baxley, GA; her half-sister, Elsie R. Jones; her half-brother, Howard Roberts of Jones County and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Stirk
Mary Eunice Stirk, of 261 Stirk Road, died Saturday, May 31, 2003. Funeral services were held Monday, June 2, 2003 in the chapel at Hart’s Mortuary with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Dr. James Paul officiated.
Mrs. Stirk was a member of Plentitude Baptist Church and the treasurer of the adult Sunday School class for 25 years.
Mrs. Stirk is survived by a son, Frederick Elton Stirk, Jr. and his wife, Pauline, of Jones County; 5 grandchildren, Karen Lentz, Jim Stirk, and Roger Harris, all of Jones County, Debra Moats of Milledgeville, and Lewis Harris of Florida; 13 great-grandchildren; a half brother, Lee Berry, and a half sister, Ruby.

Sandra Lee Ward, 58, died Thursday, May 29, 2003. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Immanuel Baptist Church with burial at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Gray. Rev. J.R. Moreno officiated.
Mrs. Ward was born in Bibb County and had lived in Haddock for the past thirty-two years. She was the daughter of the late Lillian B. Sargent. Mrs. Ward attended McEvoy High School and was a retired physician’s assistant for Dr. William Tift in Macon. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Jones County.
Mrs. Ward is survived by her husband: Sammy L. Ward of Haddock; sons: Alfred H. Nolan, III, of Centerville, Timothy C. Nolan, Sr., of Macon, Kenneth Wayne Nolan of New Knoxville, Tennessee; step-son: Chris Ward of Jeffersonville; daughter: Tammy W. Beverly Wilson Chisolm, 51, of Macon, died July 27, 2003. Services were held Thursday, July 31 at State Place Cemetery in Jones County.
Ms. Chisolm is survived by daughters: Stacey Chisolm and Barri Wiley and son-in-law: Jonthon Wiley, all of Macon; sister: Cherly W. Blount of Macon; brother: James P. Wilson and sister-in-law: Virginia A. Wilson of Gray; four grandchildren and a companion, Frank Harris of Milledgeville.

William Franklin “Billy” Cochran, 26, of Gordon, died Sunday, July 27, 2003. Memorial services were held Saturday, August 2 at his residence.
Mr. Cochran is the son of the late Franklin Daley Cochran. He was a native of Bibb County but had lived in Gordon for a number of years.
Mr. Cochran is survived by his mother: Joyce Rowland Cochran of Gordon; sister: Lisa Bradshaw of Forsyth; niece: Daley Cochran of Forsyth; and a number of aunts and uncles.

Mrs. Harrison
Edna Crawford Harrison, 70, of Gray, died Saturday, August 2, 2003. Graveside ervices were held August 5 in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Olgethorpe County with Rev. Tim Harrison officiating.
Mrs. Harrison was born in Athens and had lived in Gray for the past thirty-six years. She was the daughter of the late Frank Crawford and Clela Saye Crawford. Mrs. Harrison, a graduate of Athens High School, was a homemaker and a member of Swift Creek United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Harrison is survived by her husband: Howard Ray Harrison of Gray; son: William Ray Harrison of Gray; daughter: Patty H. Jones of Haddock; sister: JoAnn Fogle of Smyrna; grandchildren: Timothy Jones, Patrick Jones and Sara Jones; and by his great-grandson: Timothy Jones, III.

Mrs. Kitchens
Yvonne Music Kitchens, of Gordon, died Thursday, July 31, 2003. Services were held Sunday, August 3 in the Gordon United Methodist Church with burial in Hardies Chapel Church of Christ Cemetery. Rev. Hugh Shirah and Rev. Paul Best officiated.
Mrs. Kitchens was born in Appling County, the daughter of the late George Carlos and Cynthia Coetta Deen Music. She was the widow of the late James E. Kitchens. Mrs. Kitchens was retired from the Naval Ordinance Plant and the Macon Telegraph. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross and was a member of the Gordon United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Kitchens is survived by her daughter: Cynthia Kitchens Martin of Gordon; grandsons: Darrell James Martin of Gordon and Britton Emory Martin and his wife Dana Martin, all of Gordon; great-grandchildren: Ashley Martin, Blake Martin and Ethan Martin; sister: Letha Locke of Selma, Al.; and numerous nieces and nephews including Linda Thomas, Sheila Thomas, Toledo Thomas and Garrison Thomas, all of Gordon.

Mrs. Maddox
Martha Cornelia Duggan Maddox, 100, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003. Services were held Thursday, July 31 at Snow’s Memorial Chapel in Macon, with burial in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. Ron Holland officiated.
Mrs. Maddox was born at Ridgeview Plantation in Hancock County April 12, 1903 to the late Mary Marguerite Hood Duggan and the late Carl Stephens Duggan. She attended school in Sparta and graduated from Bessie Tift College in Forsyth in 1925. Mrs. Maddox taught school in Cordele and in Macon. She was affiliated with Mercer University for over 25 years until her retirement in 1978. Mrs. Maddox was the widow of Spencer Fleetwood Maddox, Sr. and was the grandmother of the late Michael Allen Maddox. She was a member of Vineville Baptist Church and the Vine-Ingle Garden Club.
Mrs. Maddox is survived by her son: Dr. Spencer Fleetwood Maddox, Jr. of Gray; grandchildren: Dr. Spencer Fleetwood Maddox, III of Macon and Amy Maddox Bean of Gray; niece: Harriet Rogers Lippmann of Columbus, great-grandchildren: Taylor Maddox, Austin Maddox and Reeves Maddox, all of Macon, Kristen Bean, Jessica Bean, Rebecca Bean, Rachel Bean, Sarah Bean and Hunter Bean, all of Gray and Macy Maddox of Forsyth.

Mrs. Whaley
Mary G. Whaley, 96, of Augusta, died Sunday, August 3, 2003. Graveside services were held August 5 at West Over Memorial Park in Augusta.
Mrs. Whaley was a former school teacher and business woman and was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Fred R. Pippin, Sr. and Paul W. Whaley, Sr.; by one son, Fred R. Pippin, Jr. and by her brother, N. H. Gorley.
Mrs. Whaley is survived by her nieces: Janet Crutchfield and Melanie Gorley; a nephew: Mark Gorley and a faithful friend and companion: Eunnie Jennings.

John Claude Meldrim, 39, died Thursday, October 2, 2003. Services were held Sunday, October 5 at Clinton United Methodist Church with burial at Wheeler Cemetery. Rev. John Haney officiated.
Mr. Meldrim was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church.
Mr. Meldrim is survived by his son, John Doyle Meldrim of Gray; sisters, Sonja Watson and Jennifer Miller, both of Gray, Pauline Ryles of Macon and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Dortch
James M. Dortch, 75, of Kathleen, died Wednesday, October 1, 2003. Services were held Friday, October 3, at Southside Baptist Church. Interment with full military honors was held in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
Born in McVay, Alabama, Mr. Dortch was the son of the late James Clarence and Medie Sarah Dortch. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served during both the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring at the rank of Technical Sergeant. While in the Air Force, he worked with missionaries and pastors, helping to start four churches. He was also retired from civil service at Robins Air Force Base.
Mr. Dortch was a former deacon of Southside Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class, the Amazing Grays, and the financial and planning committees. Also active in the community, he was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, National Rifle Association, and a lifetime member of the Disable dAmerican Veterans.
Mr. Dortch is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anna C. Dortch of Kathleen; sons: Michael W. Dortch of Jones County, James R. Dortch of Thomasville, and Andy Dortch of Oglethorpe; daughter: Janet Poston of Indiana; sister: Cora McElhaney of Cantonement, Fl.; brothers: Eugene Dortch and J. C. Dortch, both of Century, Fl.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ms. Greene
Martha Jo Greene, 81, died Friday, October 3, 2003. Services were held Saturday, October 4, at Bradley Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. John Haney officiated.
Ms. Greene was a lifelong resident of Jones County. She was the daughter of the late Wiley Nathaniel Greene and Emma Francis Smith Greene. Ms. Greene was a homemaker and a member of Bradley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her brother: Joel Thomas Greene; her sisters: Mae Jane Hulett, and Fannie Ella “Teddy” Greene; and her nephew: David Ray Hulett.
Ms. Greene is survived by her sister: Jewell Greene Williams of Albany; her nephews: H. J. Williams of Albany, Rickie Hulett of Gray; Ronnie Hulett of Jackson, Mississippi, Bobby Lee Williams of Albany and Tommy Greene of Sebring, Florida, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Cdr. Keenum
Commander Luther G. Keenum, USN, Ret., 90, died Tuesday, September 30, 2003. Services were held Friday, October 3, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home.. Burial with full military honors was held at Middle Georgia Memory Gardens. Dr. Steve Albanese officiated.
Commander Keenum was born in Caledonia, Mississippi, and had lived in Gray for the past 45 years. He was the son of the late Richard Henry Keenum and Bessie Boyd Keenum. Cdr. Keenum was a graduate of Columbus High School in Columbus, Mississippi, and was a decorated veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II and in Korea. He retired from the United States Navy as a Commander after 25 years of honorable service to his country.
Commander Keenum is survived by his wife: Mary Sue Keenum of Gray; son: Tom Keenum of Jones County; daughter: Carol Hall of Warner Robins; sister: Louise Singleton of Hope, Arkansas; grandchildren: Tommy Keenum and B. J. Keenum, both of Jones County and MS3 Nathan Johnson, USN, of Bremerton, Washington; and by his great-granddaughter: Molly Kate Keenum of Jones County.

Mr. Foster
Frank A. Foster, 82, died Friday, November 28, 2003. Services were held Monday, December 1, in the sanctuary of Gray United Methodist Church, with burial at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Gray. Rev. John Haney officiated.
Mr. Foster was born April, 20, 1921, in Otto, North Carolina, but had lived in middle Georgia for the past 50 years. A veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II, he was a graduate of Piedmont College and Peabody University. Mr. Foster retired as a chief probation/parole officer with the United States courts and was a member of the Central Georgia Seniors Golf Association, as well as being a lifelong Methodist and an active member of Gray United Methodist Church since 1965.
Mr. Foster is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois K. Foster of Gray; daughters and son-in-law, Carol Foster of Macon and Dale and David Harrell of Newnan; his granddaughters, Laura Foster, Deborah Harrell and Meredith Harrell; a sister, Frances McClure of Marietta; his brothers, Roy Foster of Buford and Ellis Foster of Hartwell; and by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hasty
Angela Hasty, 71, died Sunday, November 30, 2003. Services were held Wednesday, December 3, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home with burial at Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery in Twiggs County. Rev. Bob Hamilton and Rev. Len Woodard officiated.
Mrs. Hasty was born in Macon and had lived in Haddock for the past eight years. She was the daughter of the late Pauline Rutherford. Mrs. Hasty worked on the assembly line for the Allen Bradley Corporation and was a member of New Hope Baptist in Jones County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mayo Hasty.
Mrs. Hasty is survived by two daughters, Vicki Herring and Debi Smith, both of Haddock; three sons, Michael Hasty of Warner Robins, Marty Hasty of Jeffersonville, and Dennis Hasty of Hawkinsville; ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jackson
Lura Marie Jackson, 89, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003. Services were held Friday, November 28, in the chapel of Hart’s Mortuary. Dr. Max Hill officiated.
Mrs. Jackson was a member of Lynmore United Methodist Church of Macon where she was a faithful and active member for over 60 years. She was retired from Robins Air Force Base and was a member of the 39’ers Travel Club. Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Jackson and her son, Earl Jackson.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by her son, Billy Jackson and wife Patsy of Macon; daughter, Gayle Jackson of Hillsboro; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Greene of
Jones County and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Simpson
Ruth W. Simpson, 81, died Monday, December 1, 2003. Graveside services were held Wednesday, December 3, at Green Lawn Cemetery in Union Point, Georgia. Rev. John Haney officiated.
Mrs. Simpson was born in Greene County and had lived in Gray for the past 50 years. She was the daughter of the late Monroe Walker and Mary Hicks Walker. Mrs. Simpson was a homemaker and when her children were in school, she worked for the former Sno-White Laundry in Gray and then later worked with Watson Discount Variety Store before retiring in 1975. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. J. Simpson.
Mrs. Simpson is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine S. and Kim Gandy of Macon and Cindy S. and Clyde Willingham of Gray; her son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Phillis Simpson of Gray; her granddaughters, Stefanie Simpson of Macon and Gigi Best of Dunwoody; a grandson, Stephen Simpson of Gray; and several nieces and nephews.

Peggy Ann Durden, 42, of Lizella, died Saturday, March 6, 2004. Services were held Monday, March 8 in the mausoleum chapel at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Rev. Jerry Bisping officiated.
Miss Durden was born in Decatur and had lived in Macon most of her life. She attended Southwest High School, was a landscaper and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her sister, Wendy Lynn Clairmont, and her grandfather, Garfield Hutto.
Miss Durden is survived by her mother and step-father, Jean and Bobby Davis of Roberta; her father and step-mother, Raymond and Vickie Durden of Gray; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Ronnie Peters of Lizella; her sister, Victoria Durden of Gray; brother and sister-in-law, Butch and Denise Cryer of Lizella; grandmother, Drudie Hutto of Byron and several nieces and nephews.
Pio Nono Avenue had charge of arrangements.

Mr. Goolsby
Eugene “Meat” Goolsby, 48, of Bradley, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004. Services were held Tuesday, March 9 at New Damascus Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Kurt Bland officiated.
Mr. Goolsby was the son of the late Jessie Goolsby and the late Lillie Thurman Goolsby White, was educated in Jones County schools, and was a member of New Damascus Baptist Church. He was employed by Alabama Railroad until his health failed, then he performed odd jobs in the community.
Mr. Goolsby is survived by two sisters, Daisy Bell Palmer and Cathy Grey of Macon; two aunts, Josephine (Henry) Bland and Lizzie Thurman of Gray, and a host of relatives and friends; and his devoted friend, Mr. Joe Frank Ussery.
Collins Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
