Larry L. Gurr, 68, entered into eternal rest Monday, July 30, 2001.
Larry served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and was an electronics engineer until retirement. His second wife, Myrna, of 25 years preceded him in death.
Larry is survived by his first wife, Betty, and their four loving children, Michael (Melissa) Gurr, Keith (Vicki) Gurr, Sharon (Jeff) Thompson, Tim (Cathy) Gurr; five grandchildren, Kristina, Wil, Joshua, Tommy and Travis; one great-granddaughter, Kayla; three sisters, Laurice (Dave) Caudill, Nancy (Jim) McClure, Linda (Chuck) Snyder; the large extended family he loved; his two beloved dogs, Snuggles and Lil'Bit; and two stepchildren, Janet and Tommy.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, in the chapel of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME (4315 Main St., Jacksonville, FL 32206) with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any lung association.

Reather Johnson
Mrs. Reather Johnson, 89, of Lake City died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Avalon Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Her only daughter, Luvenia (Peggy) Jones, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Beverly Beavers; great-granddaughter, Aundrea Beavers of Connecticut; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and devoted friends, Mrs. Willie Mae Graham and Mrs. Willie Mae Sharpe of Lake City.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in New Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev Merricks officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Rest Cemetery.

Roosevelt 'Bubba' Shaw
Roosevelt "Bubba" Shaw of 2 Oak Lawn St. in Lake City died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Gainesville, terminating an extended illness.
Born in Madison, he lived in Columbia County for most of his life. He attended Richardson High School.
Survivors include dedicated former wife, Cynthia Shaw, Lake City; five daughters, Deborah Lee (Johnnie), Lake City, Beverly Ann McCook (Eddie Coney), Renee James and April Pringle of West Palm Beach, Philisha Shaw, Orlando; stepdaughters, Belinda Sellers, Gainesville, Terry Caldwell (Robbie) Norman, Okla., Cassandra Wilson (James), Lake City; six sisters, Inez Johnson, Geneva Crittenden (Leo), Helen Days (Percy), Jeanette Freeney (Ruben) and Libby Ausgood of Lake City, Betty Shaw, Miami; one brother, Albert Shaw, Lake City; one devoted brother-in-law, Rodger Ausgood, Lake City; 14 grandchildren; hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.
Funeral services for Roosevelt "Bubba" Shaw will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Alvin Baker, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Rest Cemetery.

Elzie Mable Witt Bevins
Elzie Mable Witt Bevins, 89, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
A native of Georgia, she was raised in Alachua and moved to Jacksonville in 1946. She was a retired interior decorator with J.C. Penney Co. Mrs. Bevins was predeceased by her two husbands, Alfred L. Witt in 1962 and Billie C. Bevins in 1986.
She is survived by three sons, Ed E. (Millie) Witt Sr., Wayne (Flo) Witt and Freddie (Julie) Witt; daughter, Mabel (Bill) Redden; sister, Eddie Barker; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 5753 Blanding Blvd., Jacksonville. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lake City, with the Rev. Tom Kiesler and Dr. Allan Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family wishes to thank all the friends at Life Care Center, Kingsley Avenue, for their loving care and compassion during Mrs. Bevins' stay.

Shirley Louise Giauque
Shirley Louise Giauque, 65, of Lake City, died Wednesday Aug. 1, 2001, at her home after an extended illness.
Mrs. Giauque was a native of Fort Blackmore, W.Va., and lived in Lake City for the last three years. Prior to living in Lake City, she resided in Houston for 15 years. She is the daughter of the late Calvin and Lorean Grubb Sowards.
Survivors include six daughters, Donna Arteaga of Lake City, Cheryl Griffith of Bedias, Texas, Linda McGlothlin of Lake City, Tina (Trey) Hudek of Houston, Susie and (George) Sermeno, Houston, Shannon and (Bruce) Colbert of Lake City; four brothers; Cecil Sowards of Boiling Springs, S.C., Guy Sowards of Clearwater, Willis Sowards of Dallas and Arnold Sowards, of North Judson Ind.; two sisters, Janice Sowards of Clearwater, Juanita Sowards of Michigan City, Ind.; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Lake City, with the Rev. Buddy Malloy officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at SHERRILL-GUERRY FUNERAL HOME, which is in charge of all arrangements.

Cassandra Carter Johnson
Cassandra Carter Johnson, 43, of Route 1 Box 512, Lake City (Winfield community), died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at Shands at Lake Shore hospital, terminating a brief illness.
Born in Columbia County, she was a 1975 graduate of the public school system. Confessing Christ at an early age, she was a member of Union AME Church.
Survivors include a devoted daughter, Shakiera Merrick of Lake City; loving mother, Aleatha Carter of Lake City; two grandchildren, Akiel and Akeem Williams of Lake City; four brothers, Verlon Carter Sr. of Ocala, Marshall Carter (Pinkie), Carroll Harris (Shirley), David Carter, all of Lake City; one great uncle, Mayo Carter of Lake City; two uncles, Ike Carter (Queen) of White Springs and Andrew Carter of Lake City; two aunts, Lavern Carter and Johnnie M. Carter, both of Lake City; two nieces, Tameka Butler and Verlondrea Carter of Lake City; three nephews, Verlon Carter Jr. and Keith Harris of Lake City and Earl Harris of Talla; devoted cousins, Tyra Carter and Mia Carter of Lake City; godson, Eric Thomas of Lake City; special cousins, Ermagene Williams, Emogene Graham and Faye Williams of Lake City; longtime friend, the Rev. Johnnie B. Merrick; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Benjamin Harold Meade
Benjamin Harold Meade, 83, of Lake City, died Wednesday Aug. 8, 2001, at Lake City Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mr. Meade was a native of Fairview County, Va., and lived in Lake City for the last 10 years, coming from Bristol, Tenn. He was a member of Cold Springs Presbyterian Church, Bristol, Tenn. Mr. Meade was instrumental in the beginning of the NASA space program. He was responsible for the guiding system for the Mercury rockets that sent the first monkeys into space. Mr. Meade was retired from Unisys, Raytheon and the U.S. Railroad. Mr. Meade enjoyed golfing, boating and football.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mildred L. Meade of Lake City; two sons, Michael A. (Katrina) Meade of Tallahassee and Benjamin J. (Connie) Meade of Montgomery, Ala.; a sister, Lois Neeley of Lake City; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Doris Bessie Ward
Mrs. Doris Bessie Ward, 82, of Lake City, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, in the Health Center of Lake City following a long illness.
Mrs. Ward was a native of Live Oak. She is the daughter of the late Ashley and Lota Johnson and lived in Live Oak and Bainbridge, Ga., for many years prior to moving to Lake City two years ago. Mrs. Ward was a homemaker and a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church, McAlpin. She was preceded in death by her sister, Hazel Gamble.
Survivors include her husband, Henry M. Ward Sr.; three sons, H. Mattox Ward Jr., W. Francis (Jo) Ward and Baynard (Judy) Ward, all of Lake City; two brothers, Ernest Johnson and Roy Johnson, both of Live Oak; nine grandchildren, Marnie (Susan) Ward, William (Rhonda) Ward, Scott (Natalie) Ward, Darryl Ward, Ashley (Chris) Todd, Tracie (Donald) Dix, Baynard Ward Jr., Cassie Corbett and Darryl (Lorraine) Sargent; 12 great-grandchildren, Hank Ward, Brody Ward, A.J. Ward, Cody Ward, Cole Ward, Alexa Dix, Trey Dix, Kinsley Giebeig, Kyle Giebeig, Kaleb Giebeig, Brody Sargent and McCabe Sargent.

Jodie Francis Morrison
Jodie Francis Morrison, 6, of Lake City, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, in a boating accident off Horseshoe Beach.
Jodie was a native and lifelong resident of Lake City and daughter of the late Joseph Francis Morrison. She attended kindergarten at Melrose Park Elementary School, where she learned to love reading and art. Jodie also liked playing soccer for the Columbia Youth Soccer Association. She attended Westside Baptist Chapel in Lake City. She was accompanied in death by her grandfather, Jasper ÒSkeetÓ Gardner.
Survivors include her mother and father, Rhonda Gardner and Joseph Karl Southerland, both of Lake City; two brothers, Austin Yorke and Alex Southerland, both of Lake City; two sisters, Rachel Morrison and Michelle Morrison, both of Lake City; grandparents, Billy and Carol Southerland of Gainesville, and Tom and Sarah Morrison and Nora Logan, all of Lake City; five aunts, Michelle (Ken) Gardner Taylor of Lake of the Woods, Va., Bobbi Gardner Goss of Lake City, Gina (Dave) Foy of Tallahassee, Donna Autry of Maine and Christine Morrison of Tampa; three uncles, Michael (Amanda) Southerland of Gainesville, Tommy Morrison of Fernandina Beach and Johnny Morrison of Gainesville; five cousins, Kendall and Michaela Taylor of Lake of the Wood, Danielle Pryor and Jennifer Morrison, both of Lake City, and Aaron Autry of Maine.

Ella Will Smith
Mrs. Ella Will Smith, 81, of Lake City, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at her daughterÕs home following a long illness.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Candler County, Ga., daughter of the late Bailey and Abbie Collins Bland, and attended schools in Metter, Ga. Mrs. Smith moved to Jacksonville at age 17 and moved to Lake City shortly after. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Mr. W.C. Smith. With her husband, she had owned and operated Smith Grocery Store in Lake City. Mrs. Smith was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lake City for 62 years. She will be remembered as a devoted wife who loved her family.
Survivors include three daughters, Judy (Mick) Pomeroy and Sandra Turman of Lake City and Vivian Perkins of Gloucester, Va.; one sister, Marian Chasteen of Lake City; four grandchildren, Lyn Cooke, Missy Boswell, Clay Turman and Michael Pomeroy Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Finley Cooke, Ellie Cooke, Allison Roswell and Andrew Pomeroy.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, in First United Methodist Church of Lake City with the Rev. Rob Atchley, church pastor, officiating. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Conrad Wolfe
Mr. Conrad Wolfe, 80, of Melrose, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, on Oct. 25, 1920, Mr. Wolfe moved to the Keystone Heights area 40 years ago from Ohio. Mr. Wolfe attended Faith Presbyterian Church, Melrose. Mr. Wolfe was an antique dealer, co-owner of La Casa Del Sol and served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Wolfe is survived by one son, Dr. David J. Wolfe of San Bernardino, Calif.; one daughter, Diane Wolfe of California; one sister; Gladys L. Wolfe of Branford; and a number of grandchildren.
Memorial services for Conrad Wolfe will be held later under the direction of JONES FUNERAL HOME, Keystone Heights.

Frieda Brady
Frieda Brady, 67, of Lake City, passed away Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Lake City Medical Center following an extended illness.
She is survived by two sisters, Edith Bernzotte of Unidilla, N.Y., and Dorothy Jones of Lake City; and other mournful relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time through CAESAR'S FUNERAL HOME, Alyce Caesar, owner; Charles S. Chestnut, licensed funeral director.

C.W. Fender
C.W. Fender, 91, of Lake City, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at his home following an extended illness.
Mr. Fender, the son of the late Elzie and Ada Adel Fender, had resided in Lake City since 1951. Mr. Fender was a Church of God minister, having pastored Cross City Church of God and Labelle Church of God and attended Evangel Church of God, Lake City. He was preceded in death by one son, Odis Fender.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Maggie L. Fender; two sons, Bill Fender of Leesburg and Frank Fender of Jacksonville; three daughters, Freda Leach and Sharon Morgan, both of Lake City, and Hilda Boston of New Port Richey; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, in the chapel of Guerry Funeral Home, Lake City. Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, beginning at 9 a.m. in the funeral home. Memorial donations should be made to the Hospice of North Central Florida, 1900 Florida Gateway Blvd., Lake City, FL 32055.

Louise Murfee
Louise Murfee, 73, of Branford passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in North Florida Regional Medical Center, Gainesville, after a short illness.
The Columbus, Ga., native moved to Branford from Cocoa in 1970. Retired after 28 years as owner/operator of Suwannee River Cove, Branford, he attended First Baptist Church of Branford.
Survivors include one daughter, Lura (Glenn) Sapp, Branford; one son, Sam Murfee, Orlando; one sister, Oneta Wyatt, Douglas, Ga.; one brother, Clinton (Vernon) Dunn, Merritt Island; two grandchildren, Aubrey and Emma Sapp; one cousin, Thurman Grant, Colquitt, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, in First Baptist Church, Branford, with the Revs. Craig Kurimay and Steve Boyd. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will follow in O'Brien Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church Worship Celebration Center, P.O. Jesse Richard Nash
Jesse Richard Nash, 60, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center following a brief illness.
A native of Florida, Jesse was born in Sebring and moved to Lake City in 1947. Jesse was an avid collector of Indian artifacts, a certified scuba and cave diver, reader, writer and world traveler. Jesse went to work for Occidental in January 1979. Jesse was terminated by PCS in March 1999 after becoming disabled and unable to work. Many of his friends and co-workers will remember him as the "Iceman."
Survivors include his devoted wife of 36 years, Jo Ann Noegel Nash; two loving children, daughter Jessica LeMay (Lee) and son Erik L. Nash (Denise); a granddaughter, Samantha Taylor Nash, all of Lake City; step-granddaughters, Shauna LeMay of Massachusetts and Megan LeMay of Connecticut; three brothers, Tom, Winston and Wayne Nash; numerous, nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.
Jesse was preceded in death by his father and mother, S.T. "Shorty" and Virgie Mae Jones Nash; sister, Betty Lou Nash Witt; brother, Billy W. Nash; and infant grandson, Gabriel Alexander Nash.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at their home from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Wellborn, with the Rev. Rick Parish officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of ICS Cremation, Lake City. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice in Jesse's name.

Patricia Ann Rhoades
Mrs. Patricia Ann Rhoades, 56, of Lake City, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 8, 2001, at her home following an extended illness.
A native of Goshen, Ind., Mrs. Rhoades has lived in Lake City for the past 15 years, having moved here from Pasco County. Her grandchildren played a very important role in Mrs. Rhoades' life. Mrs. Rhoades was preceded in death in 1991 by her grandson, Clinton William Rhoades.
Mrs. Rhoades is survived by her husband, Mr. Glenn R. Rhoades, Lake City; one son, Peter F. Rhoades, Lake City; one daughter, Margaret Rhoades, Lake City; and six grandchildren.
Private family services will be scheduled for a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of BIGGS FUNERAL HOME, 3801 S. First St., Lake City.

Charles Fred Ricker
Charles Fred Ricker, 71, of Lake City died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at his residence after a brief illness.
Mr. Ricker was a native of Bristol, Va., and had resided in Lake City for the past 28 years. He is the son of the late Ray and Minnie Bivens Ricker.
Survivors include one daughter, Myrtle Ricker Carter, Lake City; one son, Clifford Ricker, Lake City; one brother, Lloyd Ricker, Live Oak; and two grandchildren, Clifford Charles Carter and Daniel Jean Gruber.

Helen Moore Burris
Helen Moore Burris, 89, of Lake City, Fla., passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at the Health Center of Lake City after an extended illness. She was a resident of Lake City on and off for 50 years.
Mrs. Burris was born in West Point, Miss., in 1911 to the late Charles Swope and Alice Mae Moore. She was the middle child between two brothers, Charles Jr., and James Moore, both deceased. The family moved to Fort Myers, Fla., in 1926, where she remained until 1945. Mrs. Burris was presented her high school diploma by Thomas Eddison, whose winter home was in Fort Myers.
Mrs. Burris and her husband, Chaplain Jack Burris, ministered God's love and healing grace to many. She was a Cub Scout den mother, co-founder of the Ladies Auxiliary at Shands at Lake Shore hospital, a circle leader at First United Methodist Church, a charter member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, an avid bridge player and a lover of needlepoint and antiques. She also loved to vacation at her summer home in Monteagle, Tenn.
Mr. Burris is survived by her beloved husband, James A. "Jack" Burris; her sister-in-law, Opal Tabor of Kansas City, Mo.; two sons, C. Marvin Burris (Robbie) of Lake City; Jack M. Burris (Anne) of Atlanta, Ga.; two stepchildren, James L. (Carlotta) Burris and Thalia Ann (Tom) Powell, both of Little Rock, Ark.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a niece, Carol George of Fort Myers.
There will be a visitation at Sherrill-Guerry Funeral Home from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, 2001. Graveside funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, in the family's plot at Fort Myers Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. George A. Buie, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Fort Myers, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make memorial contributions in her memory to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church Piano Fund, 2300 McFarlane Ave., Lake City, FL 32025, or to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 2131 Mango Place, Jacksonville, FL 72207. John Robert Geiger Jr.
John Robert Geiger Jr., 44, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla.
A lifelong resident of Lake City, Mr. Geiger was an Army veteran who was self-employed as a truck driver for the produce industry and enjoyed mud racing as a favorite pastime.
Preceding Mr. Geiger in death was his sister, Prepa Geiger-Lang.
Mr. Geiger is survived by his wife of 27 years, Bobbie; his parents, John Robert Geiger Sr. and Lenora Geiger of Lake City; one son, John Robert III; two daughters, Lea Nora Scott (Brian) and Victoria Geiger; one brother, Mark Geiger; and one half-brother, Al Sanders, all of Lake City; two sisters, Julie Espenship (David) of Fort White and Ila Willams (Jack) of Ocala; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service with military honors for Mr. Geiger will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Columbia Funeral Home & Cremation Center (formerly Costanzo Funeral and Cremation) 1270 E. Duval St., Lake City; 758-0046.

Don E. Hampshire
Don E. Hampshire, 75, a resident of Live Oak, Florida, died Saturday, Au- gust 11, 2001 at his residence following a extended illness.
Mr. Hampshire had resided in Live Oak, Florida since 1987 coming from Cleve-land, Ohio. Mr. Hampshire was a Veteran of WWII serving in the Army and a member of the Scottish Rites.
He was the son of the late Gale and Lela Crawford Hampshire, and was prede-ceased by his wife, Anna Marie Hampshire in 1982 and a dear friend, Helen Hurst.
Surviving are dear friends, Ken and Sandra Bonds of Live Oak, Florida.
Graveside services will be held for Mr.Hampshire on Wednesday, August 15, 2001, 2:00 P.M. at Cedar Hill Memory Gardens in Daytona Beach, Florida.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Hospice of North Central Florida, 1900 Florida Gateway Ctr., Blvd., Lake City, Florida 32024.
SHERRILL-GUERRY FUNERAL HOME, 626 South Marion Street, Lake City, Florida is in charge of all arrangements.
