ATWATER - Mary Helen Palmer, 80, of Atwater, died Wednesday at her home.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Atwater with the Rev. Grant O. Fischer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Atwater Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born June 1, 1920, in Pueblo, Colo., as Wanda Elizabeth Craig, to James Leo and Franses (Armstrong) Craig. At ages 4 months, she was adopted by Ephram and Emma (Decker) Hamlin of Sapulpa, Okla., and given the name Mary Helen. When her mother died and her father became ill, she lived with her grandparents, Judge Decker and his wife Adeline of Sapulpa. She later lived with her aunt and uncle, Ruth (Winters-Decker) and James Palmer. They moved to the Granite Falls-Sacred Heart area in 1936. On Oct. 3, 1938, she married Dale Palmer in Olivia. They farmed in the Renville area, moved west of Atwater in 1952, moved to a farm in Brooten in 1957, and a year later to Lake Lillian where they operated a poultry farm. They returned to Atwater in 1960. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Atwater, serving as a Sunday School teacher.
She is survived by her children Emma Lou (and Richard) Hanson of Brooten, Colleen Hinrichs of Clara City, Floyd (and Lois) Palmer of St. Clair, Jeanette (and James) Mayer of St. Cloud, Douglas (and Virginia) Palmer of Coon Rapids, Patricia Jennings of Inver Grove Heights, Sandra Hopkins of Henderson, Nev.; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 18, 1988, and one granddaughter.

Marie Masching
Jan. 15, 1918 - July 20, 2000
BELVIEW - Marie Masching, 82, of Belview died Thursday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Belview with the Rev. Daniel Faugstad officiating. Burial will be in the Belview City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sunset Funeral Home in Echo and one hour prior to services at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
She was born Jan. 15, 1918, in Sheridan Township, Redwood County, to Karl "Charley" and Minnie (Froelich) Ziegler. She attended Landeer School District 103 in Sheridan Township and graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1936. On Sept. 11, 1938, she married George D. Masching. They made their home in several different communities, including Svea, until moving to rural Belview in 1952. In 1957, they moved into Belview. She was active at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she was a member and officer of the ladies aid and Bethany Auxiliary and taught Saturday and Sunday school for 30 years. She also was the church janitor for 15 years. In 1971, she took the job of church secretary, which she still held at the time of her death. She was second cook at the Belview School from 1962 to 1983 and was the scorekeeper for boys' and girls' basketball and girls' volleyball.
She is survived by four children, George Jr. of Belview, Dorothy (and John) Zamzow of Morgan, Donald (and Linda) Masching of Woodbridge, Va., and Darla (and Jeff) Kimpling of Willmar; one granddaughter, six grandsons and six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irene Lenz of Lynnwood, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one infant son, her parents and four brothers.

Mildred E. Peterson
July 19, 1914 - July 21, 2000
WILLMAR - Mildred E. Peterson, 86, of Willmar died Friday at Bethesda Heritage Center.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Fred Jensen and the Rev. Roger Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
She was born July 19, 1914, in Willmar to Hans Edward and Ida Nelson. She grew up in Willmar and attended Willmar Public Schools. On Oct. 8, 1933, she married Ernest J. Peterson. They made their home in Willmar. She worked in food service at Willmar Regional Treatment Center and was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, where she was active with the ladies aid, circle and quilters.
She is survived by her daughters, Laurice (and LeRoy) Olson and Irene (and Monroe) Wallin, both of Willmar; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, LuVern A. (and Shirley) Nelson of Burnsville; and a sister, Ione (and Virgil) Pederson of Willmar.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Lorene DeGrote
July 14, 1903 - July 22, 2000
CLARA CITY - Lorene DeGrote, 97, of Clara City died Saturday at the Clara City Care Center.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City, followed by burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with the Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Clara City.
She was born July 14, 1903, at Sylvan to Ambrose and Olive (Gorman) Rubertus and moved with her family to Montevideo two years later. She attended elementary school in Montevideo until the family moved to Marshall in 1918, where she graduated from Marshall High School in 1921. After working as a stenographer for one year at the Marshall Milling Co., she attended Mankato Teachers College, graduating in 1924 in elementary education. She taught school in Amiret and Clara City until her marriage to Peter DeGrote. She became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Clara City. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Nursing Home Auxiliary. After the death of her husband in 1961, she taught special education in Clara City until retiring in 1967.
She is survived by four children, Phyllis (and Victor) Pedri of Georgetown, Calif., James (and Joy) DeGrote of Vero Beach, Fla., Shirley (and Jim) Donner of Stillwater and Gayle (and Cal) Holm of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three brothers.

Florence M. Janson
April 14, 1919 - July 21, 2000
BENSON - Florence Margaret Janson, 81, of Benson died Friday morning at the Minnewaska District Hospital in Starbuck.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson with the Rev. Keith Born officiating. Burial will be in the Benson City Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Jacobson-Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson and for one hour at the church prior to the service.
She was born April 14, 1919, in Benson to Halsten and Inga (Kommerstad) Lee. She grew up in Benson and attended school through the eighth grade. On April 25, 1942, she married Irvin G. Janson at her parents' farm home. She was a lifelong resident of the Benson area. Prior to her marriage she worked at the Swift County-Benson Hospital as a nurses' aide and as a cook. She was a member of Six Mile Lutheran Church, Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, the ELCA and was active in church circles.
She is survived by one son, David Janson (and Diane Espelien) of Benson; one daughter, Gloria (and Robert) Smith of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence (and Catherine) Lee of Benson; one sister, Evelyn (and Marvin) Thorson of Starbuck; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Louis 'Fibber' Chan
June 27, 1936 - July 21, 2000
GLENWOOD - Louis "Fibber" Chan, 64, of Glenwood died Friday evening at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Glenwood with the Rev. Tom Becker officiating. Burial will be in St. John Nepomuk Cemetery in Lowry.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hoplin Funeral Chapel in Glenwood with a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues Tuesday for one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born June 27, 1936, in Starbuck to Louis and Mary (Brosh) Chan Sr. He grew up in Lake Mary Township, Pope County, and graduated from Alexandria High School. After his schooling, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. On June 12, 1967, he married Dorothy Gindra. After returning from the Army, he worked as a carpenter in the Pope County area for many years until retiring two years ago. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the VFW Post of Alexandria and the American Legion Post of Glenwood.
He is survived by his wife; three children, Rachel (and Steven) Swanberg of Alexandria, Jill (and Randy) Koep of Millerville and Matt Chan of Glenwood; four grandchildren; a brother, Vernon "Bud" (and Tina) Chan of Lowry; two sisters, Rose Marie (and Myron) Berglin of Alexandria and Florence Ann (and Walter) Svec of Lowry; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Gail Marie; one grandchild; one brother; and one sister.

Kenneth C. Gander
Aug. 26, 1984 - July 22, 2000
SPICER - Kenneth C. "Kenny" Gander, 15, of Spicer died Saturday at his home.
A memorial funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church of Spicer with the Rev. Fred Fink officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
There will be no visitation or reviewal. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred. Arrangements are with the Green Lake Funeral Home of Spicer.
He was born Aug. 26, 1984, in Willmar to Charles and Connie (Checklund) Gander. He was to be a sophomore at Willmar High School this fall.
He is survived by his parents; his maternal grandmother, Anne Checklund of Hudson, Wis.; his paternal grandfather, Charles Gander of Mesa, Ariz.; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Merwin Checklund, and paternal grandmother, Jean Gander.

Todd D. Mason
Sept. 25, 1963 - July 22, 2000
OLIVIA - Todd Douglas Mason, 36, of Olivia died Saturday at Renville County Hospital in Olivia.
His memorial service was Monday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia with the Rev. Ruth Edberg officiating. Further services and burial will take place in Tulsa, Okla.
He was born Sept. 25, 1963, in Denver, Colo., to James and Lee (Berry) Mason. He grew up in Michigan and Tulsa. He moved to Olivia in 1995 where he was employed in construction as a stainless steel pipe-fitter.
He is survived by his mother Lee Mason of Tulsa; father and stepmother James and Marilynn Mason of Hayden Lake, Idaho; brother Jim Mason of Tulsa; fiancée Karen Jean Meyer of Olivia and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Florence M. Janson
April 14, 1919 - July 21, 2000

Mabel Marcus
June 8, 1916 - July 23, 2000
WILLMAR - Mabel Marcus, 84, of Willmar, formerly of Raymond, died Sunday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Raymond Christian Reformed Church in Raymond with the Rev. Dale Visser officiating. Burial will be in Bunde Christian Reformed Cemetery.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born June 8, 1916, in Lone Tree Township, Chippewa County, to John and Grietje (Petersen) Scheltens. She attended District 48 rural school.
In April 1948, she married Dick T. Marcus, and they famed in the Raymond area. She moved to Raymond in 1978 and to Rice Care Center in 1996.
She was a member of Bunde Christian Reformed Church.
She is survived by her son Lowell Marcus of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter Audrey Marcus of Starbuck; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister Grietje Ulferts of Raymond.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and four sisters.

Robert E. Krogstad
Feb. 15, 1907 - July 21, 2000
GLENWOOD - Robert E. Krogstad, 93, of Glenwood died Friday at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck with the Rev. Eric Thorson officiating.
Arrangements are with Hoplin Funeral Home.
He was born Feb. 15, 1907, in Norway Township, Roberts County, S.D., to Hans and Gina (Pederson) Krogstad. He was a graduate of Sisseton, S.D., High School.
In 1932, he married Rachel Hammer. They owned dry-cleaning businesses in Webster, S.D., Moose Lake and Walker, and a Laundromat in Moose Lake. They operated Stony Point Resort on Leech Lake and developed Sun Bay Trailer Park near Walker. They retired in 1969, spending time in Mesa, Ariz., and Walker, before moving to Starbuck in 1984. In 1999 they moved to Ridgewood Villa in Glenwood.
He was a member of Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, and past master of Masonic Coteau Lodge. He was a volunteer fireman, member of Kiwanis in Webster, and active in Starbuck Senior Citizens.
He is survived by his wife; daughters Barbara (and Dan) Schliesman of Glenwood, Janice Weaver of Golden, Colo.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Robert Krogstad Jr.

Alice Rudeen
March 8, 1920 - July 24, 2000
WILLMAR - Alice Rudeen, 80, of Willmar died Monday at Rice Care Center in Willmar.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Vinje Lutheran Church with the Rev. Barbara Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born March 8, 1920, in Willmar to John and Clara (Dengerud) Swalin. She was a 1938 graduate of Willmar High School and attended Minneapolis Business College. She was employed by Tomlinson Lumber Yard from 1939-46.
On May 17, 1941, she married LuVerne Rudeen in Willmar. In 1956 she began employment in the Armour Division of Farmers Produce, and was then employed by Perkins Lumber for 33 years, retiring in 1984. They moved to their home on Lake Florida in 1983.
She was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church, active in circle and as a volunteer.
She is survived by her daughters LuAnn (and Frank) Hansen of Stacy, Janice Rudeen of Chaska; one grandson; brother Clifford (and Virgie) Swalin of Willmar; sister Joan (and Gene) Dirnberger of Chaska and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband on Feb. 3, 1997.

Gerda A. Hagen
May 14, 1914 - July 19, 2000
ALEXANDRIA - Gerda Alanta Hagen, 86, of Alexandria, formerly of Montevideo, died Wednesday at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Her funeral was Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Garfield with the Rev. Dave Gran officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria.
Arrangements were with Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
She was born May 14, 1914, in Montevideo to Lars and Hulda (Martinson) Petterson. She attended Montevideo school and was a 1932 graduate of St. Paul Central High School in the Twin Cities.
On Dec. 4, 1932, she married Christian "Christ" Hagen in Milbank, S.D. They lived in Montevideo and in 1945 moved to a farm north of Montevideo. She ran the Tip Top Café in Montevideo.
She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo, active in ladies aid, member of church council and Sunday School teacher. She was active in Degree of Honor, Homemakers, Red Cross and Birthday Clubs. They moved to Alexandria in September 1964, where she was a member of First Lutheran Church serving as circle chairman. She organized Homemakers Extension as well as being an officer. They were later members of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Garfield where she was a member of ladies aid.
She is survived by her daughter Karen (and Delroy) Johnson of Sacred Heart; sons Robert Hagen of Minneapolis, Paul (and Bobbie) Garry of Austin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brother Johnny Petterson of Aurora, Ore., and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, six brothers and five sisters.

Jay A. Mitlyng
April 13, 1937 - July 23, 2000
MONTEVIDEO - Jay Arlen Mitlyng, 63, of Montevideo died Sunday at Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with the Rev. Doug Olson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 6 p.m. today at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo, and also one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born April 13, 1937, in Montevideo to Jay Sr. and Myrtle (Iverson) Mitlyng. He attended Montevideo school.
On Aug. 30, 1958, he married Jan Dvergsten in Watson. He was a self-employed trucker for many years.
He was a 20-year member of the Montevideo Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Becky Borstad of Dawson; son Scott (and Teresa) Mitlyng of Montevideo; four grandchildren; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
