James J. Gilligan, 79, of Derry died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000 at William Penn Care Center, Penn Township. Mr. Gilligan was retired from Latrobe Forge and Spring and was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church and Chestnut Ridge Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 444, both of Derry. He was an Army veteran of the Second World War. He was born Jan. 30, 1921 in Latrobe, son of the late William L. and Mary Josephine Schwartz Gilligan. Survivors include his sons Charles and his wife Lynn, Trafford, and Patrick and his wife Judy, Latrobe; three grandchildren and a great-grandson, a sister-in-law, Ann Gilligan, Latrobe, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife Frances Mary Nolfi Gilligan, in 1979, his brothers John, Louis, Robert and Thomas, and his sisters Anna Mary, Margaret and Caroline.

Helen Galinac Gyenes
Saltsburg native was a member of St. MaryÕs Roman Catholic Church Helen Galinac Gyenes, 74, of Murrysville died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000 at home. Mrs. Gyenes, a member of St. MaryÕs Roman Catholic Church, Export, was born April 6, 1925 in Saltsburg, daughter of the late Lawrence and Anna Bedick Galinac. She is survived by John, her husband of 55 years; three daughters, Jean Frand, Penn Township, Mrs. Chris (Bonnie) Christophersen, Westport, Conn., and Mrs. Rob (Doreen) Brammell of Hilliard, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; Also surviving are five brothers and sisters, Lawrence, Latrobe, William, Cleveland, Thomas, Mayfield Heights, Ohio, and Mary Weravetz and Dorothy Roeder, both of Arizona. Her brothers Joe and John preceded her in death. A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday at St. MaryÕs Church by Fr. Dismas Young; interment was in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.

Charlotte McClain Lowman
Blairsville native taught elementary school in Greensburg-Salem District
Charlotte L. Lowman, 89, of Greensburg died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000 at IHS Greensburg. Mrs. Lowman taught at the old Seventh Ward Elementary School in the Greensburg Salem School District. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Greensburg, and a past board member of the Greensburg Teachers Credit Union. Born Oct. 6, 1910 in Blairsville, she was a life member of the National and Pennsylvania State education associations and the Westmoreland County Teachers Association, and a former member of Unit 3 of the Westmoreland Hospital Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Laura Kelly McClain, and her sister Leah E. Newhouse. She is survived by her son Edward A. of Clermont, Fla. Friends will be received this morning from 9 to 11 a.m., when services will be held at Barnhart Funeral Home, Blairsville, Rev. Gene R. Stuckey officiating. Entombment will be in Colonial Chapel Mausoleum, St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg.

Calvin C. Montgomery
40-year miner for R&P Coal survived by wife, 2 sons, stepchildren, grands
Calvin C. Montgomery, 75, of McIntyre, Young Township, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000 at home. Mr. Montgomery was born Aug. 1, 1924 in Clearfield County, son of the late Paul and Emmaline Fishel Montgomery. He lived in Young Township most of his life and had been a 40-year miner for the R&P<\p>Coal Co., retiring in 1986. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Gloria; two sons, David and Dennis of Indiana; 11 grandchildren; Also surviving are stepchildren, Sue Stanton, Staunton, Va., Thomas Leonard, Rillton, Pa., William Leonard and Donna Rose, both of Saltsburg, Barbara Lorelli, Loyalhanna Township, JoAnne Frye, Greensburg, Daniel Heckman, Olathe, Kan., Joseph Heckman, Elizabethton, Tenn., Audrey Fleming, Buffalo, N.Y., Sarah Temchulla, Rossiter, and Paul Montgomery, Sharon. He was preceded in death by his brother John and grandson Teddy. Services were held Thursday at Curran Funeral Home, Saltsburg, Rev. Susan Lantz officiating. Interment followed in Edgewood Cemetery, Saltsburg.

John S. Schork
Saltsburg resident survived by his parents, brothers, nieces, nephews
John S. Schork, 44, of Saltsburg died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000 at Latrobe Area Hospital. Mr. Schork was born May 26, 1955 in Indiana, son of Mack and Patricia Schork of Saltsburg. He is also survived by his brothers Gary S. of Jeannette, and Michael J. and Brian L., both of West Newton, and six nieces and nephews. Interment was in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg. Memorial donations were suggested to the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Fund, 121 W. Second Ave., Latrobe, Pa. 15650.

Julia Mutinelli Souders
Retired nurseÕs aide at Latrobe Hosp. was a member of St. Joseph Church
Julia "Tulia" M. Souders, 91, of Latrobe, formerly of Derry, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000 at Latrobe Area Hospital. Mrs. Souders was a retired nurseÕs aide at Latrobe Area Hospital and a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Derry. She was born May 8, 1908 in Ralphton, Somerset County, to the late Silvio and Rosina Baroni Mutinelli. Survivors include two children, Mrs. Paul (Noreen A.) Dando of Latrobe, and John Scott and his wife Ivan of Keokee, Va.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; Also surviving is a sister, Emma Bazzoli of Carnegie, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Amos B. on June 27, 1990; her brother Alfio; two sisters, Alma M. Kountz and infant Rosemary. A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 18 at St. Joseph Church by Fr. Michael McIlwain. Interment was in the church Cemetery, Quinlisk Funeral Home, Derry in charge.

William Young
Daughter, stepdaughters, sister survive longtime Indiana Cty. resident
William Young, 74, of Saltsburg died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000 at home. Mr. Young was born April 16, 1925 in Chicago, son of the late Bess and Elizabeth Spencer Young. He lived most of his life in Indiana County, where he was a laborer for Scholfield Brothers. He was a Free Methodist by faith. Survivors include his daughter Debbie Salichuk, Scarborough, Ontario, Canada; two stepdaughters, Mary Ellen Edwards, Indiana, and Robin Young, Pittsburgh; Also surviving is his sister Mary Edna Young, Fleming, Ky., and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers Bud, James, Gaynor and Wilbert, and his sister Ruth.

Wilhelmina Hilty Dillen
50-year Homer City resident was a housekeeper for Indiana homes
Wilhelmina M. "Aunt Mina" Dillen, 82, of Indiana died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000 at Beacon Manor Nursing Home, Indiana. Mrs. Dillen, daughter of the late H. Boyd and Mary Henry Hilty, was born June 16, 1917 in Indiana. She lived in Homer City for 50 years, where she was a homemaker and a housekeeper for various homes in Indiana. She is survived by her brother Donald and his wife Nancy of Morrisville; a nephew, Steve Berezansky and his wife Pam of Indiana; a great niece, Marie Berezansky of Indiana; several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Cyrus G. in 1967; eight brothers and sisters, Harry, Robert, Clair, William, Blanche Zapach, Mary Louise Cecconi, Ruby Berezansky and Betty Ferguson, and a half-sister, Wilda Meredith. Services were held Wednesday in Indiana, Rev. Elizabeth B. Rogers officiating. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery, Indiana.

Edwin L. Foreman
Past president of Blairsville Kiwanis, a justice of the peace in Burrell Twp.
Edwin L. Foreman, 89, of Black Lick died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000 at Scenery Hill Manor, Indiana. Mr. Foreman, who worked as a boilermaker at Westinghouse, was a justice of the peace in Burrell Township. He was a member and past president of the Blairsville Kiwanis Club, and a member of Black Lick Presbyterian Church. Born Nov. 18, 1910 in Black Lick to the late Burton and Clarissa Palmer Foreman, he was a member of Acacia Masonic Lodge 355, Blairsville, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Coudersport Con-sistory and Royal Arch Chapter 315, Indiana. Survivors include five children, Clair L., Margie Buzzinotti, Ruth Davis, Clara Mae Santus and Marie McLaren, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. His wife Margaret V. McConnell Foreman died in 1993. He also was preceded in death by his brothers Davis, Terrence, Robert and Cecil. Interment was in Blairsville Cemetery, Ferguson Funeral Home, Blairsville, in charge.

Joseph J. Blix Rostis
Electrician for R&P Coal, member of Church of Good Shepherd, UMWA
Joseph J. "Blix" Rostis, 89, of McIntyre died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000 at Indian Haven Nursing Center, Indiana. Mr. Rostis was a member of the Roman Catholic Church of the Good Shepherd, Kent, and UMWA<\p>Local 3548. He was an electrician for R&P<\p>Coal and had worked for 55 years, most recently in New Kensington. Born Nov. 22, 1910 in Sidney, Pa., to the late Michael and Elizabeth Arvay Rostis, he was an avid baseball fan who followed the West Lebanon team. Survivors include two children, Mrs. Edward (Marie) Grsevinsky, Duncans-ville, and Mrs. Donald (Mildred) Cal-houn, Blairsville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister Hel-en Toth, Indiana, and brother Paul, Homer City. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Galonis Rostis in 1990; two sisters, Mary Ziegmond and Elizabeth Morgan, and two brothers, Mike and John. A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday at the Church of the Good Shepherd by Fr. Larry Kulick. Interment was in St. Bernard Cemetery, Indiana.

William K. Myers
Retired Latrobe Steel employee was a native of Grafton.
William Kie Myers, 81, of Latrobe, died Monday, August 14, 2000. The son of the late Jack and Rose Dickton Myers, he was born March 15, 1919 in Grafton, Indiana County. Mr. Myers retired from Latrobe Steel with 32 years of service and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army.
He is survived by his wife, Irene M. Kushner Myers; three sons, Carl and his wife Anna Mary, Connecticut, Tim and his wife Sandy and Fred and his wife Donna, all of Latrobe;
Also two sisters, Sophia Mazon and Agnes Myers, both of Blairsville; seven grandchildren, Jeff, Carla, Terry, Randy, Debbie, Nicole and Mark and two great granddaughters, Ashley and Jennifer.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eddie; two brothers, John and Adam; two sisters, June O'Lear and Pauline Myers.
Services were held Thursday at Lopatich Funeral Home, Latrobe, Rev. Wendel Bishop officiating. Interment was in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township.

Clara Josephine 'Josie' Fassett Uptegraph

Clara Josephine 'Josie’ Uptegraph, 78, of 3190 Iselin Road, Saltsburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000 at Indiana Hospital.
Mrs. Uptegraph was born March 10, 1922 in Young Township, Indiana County, daughter of the late Robert and Winnie Fassett. She was a homemaker and a resident of Elders Ridge most of her life.
She worked as a cook at Indiana County Jail and Elders Ridge School, and was a member of Elders Ridge Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the choir and Homemakers Club and a church youth group supporter.
Her husband Kenneth R. died in 1993. A brother and three sisters also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two children, Ronald, Elmer, N.J. and Mrs. Jim (Pamela) Phillips, Sealy, Texas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received today, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at Curran Funeral Home, Saltsburg, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dr. Tom Jones officiating. Interment will be in Ridgeview (Elders Ridge) Cemetery.
Memorial donations were suggested to Trinity Presbyterian Church, Clarksburg.

Thomas F. Bishop
Served with the U.S Army in Korea,
member of New Alexandria Fire Dept.
Thomas F. Bishop, 68, of New Alexandria, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Allegheny General Hospital, North Side.
He was born Feb. 16, 1932, in Duquesne, a son of the late Frederick R. and Rose Ella Noel Bishop. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea. He retired from the Gulf Oil Corp., where he was plant operator, after 41 years of service.
He was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of the New Alexandria Lions Club, where he was past president, a life member of the New Alexandria Fire Department 77, where he was chaplain and a former trustee, and a member of the B.P.O.E. 907 of Latrobe.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marian Bishop Rodgers.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Ann Hanrahan Bishop of New Alexandria; three children, Beth Bishop Mongelluzzo of Delmont, John F. "Jack" and wife, Heidi, of Pickerington, Ohio and James T. "Jim" of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Danielle, Anthony and Vincent Mongelluzzo, Bryce and Cameron Bishop; and a sister, Nancy Bloom of Trafford.
Services were held Thursday at the P. David Newhouse Funeral Home, New Alexandria, with the Rev. Terry J. Carnahan officiating. Interment followed in Twin Valley Memorial Park Inc., Delmont.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department or the New Alexandria Lions Club.

Robert Jay Resslar
Graduate of DAHS Class of 1977,
member of United Methodist Church
Robert Jay Resslar, 41, of Blairsville RD 3, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, in his residence.
He was born Dec. 21, 1958, in Latrobe, a son of Adam and Eleanor Gefrovich Resslar of New Alexandria.
He was employed by Riverview Homes for 22 years and was a graduate of Derry Area High School, Class of 1977. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of New Alexandria.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Paul and Sara Jane Resslar; and maternal grandparents, John and Mary Gefrovich.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two children, Andrea and Aaron of Blairsville; the following brothers and sister: Adam M. Resslar Jr. and wife, Lisa, Debra Resslar and husband, Tim Glotfelty and Leonard Resslar, all of New Alexandria, and Richard Resslar and wife, Lorrie, of Latrobe; along with six nieces, a nephew and a great-niece, a nephew and a great niece.
Bob was a loving, kind, and devoted son, father and brother. He will be missed deeply by all who loved him.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Newhouse Funeral Home, New Alexandria with the Rev. Lota C. Jones, pastor of the New Alexandria United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment followed in Union Cemetery, New Alexandria.

Penny H. Stufft
Westmoreland Manor resident, survived by sons, grandchildren, brother, sisters
Penny H Stufft, 56, of Westmoreland Manor, formerly of Bolivar RD 1, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, in Westmoreland Manor.
Born June 10, 1944, in Bridgeville, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Irma (Delphus) Hergert.
She is survived by three sons, Shawn, married to Becky Thomas, and Wade, married to Lanise Baidas, all of Minneapolis, Minn., and Brent of St. Paul, Minn.; two grandchildren, Lauren and Jacob; a brother, Louis Hergert of Huntsville, Ala.; and two sisters, Lydia Miller of Carnegie and Mary Heinrich of South Fayette.
A memorial service was held Thursday in the Westmoreland Manor chapel. Interment was in Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Arrangements by the Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence.

Hughie D. Tomb

was basketball referee, umpire
Hughie D. Tomb, 83, St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of New Florence, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at All Childrens Hospital, St. Petersburg.
Born Jan. 17, 1917, in East Wheatfield Township, son of late Hugh B. and Mary (Altimus) Tomb.
Also preceded in death by seven brothers and five sisters.
Survived by wife of 51 years, former Emma Killen; daughter, Faith, wife of Ronald Baird, Ligonier; three granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Hallie Brubaker, Seward.
Graduate of Armagh High School. U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served with the seabees. Member of F&AM Acacia Lodge 355, Blairsville, and Structural Ironworkers Union, Local 3, Pittsburgh. Was a referee for high school basketball and played and umpired softball in Florida. Also formerly umpired baseball in Johnstown area.
Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Eugene W. Gaul, 78, of Clermont Fla., died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000.
Son of the late Boyd and Bertha (Flinkinger) Gaul, he was born June 7, 1922, in Derry.
He is survived by his wife, Jane M. Shaffer Gaul; a son, Kenneth of Clermont; daughter, Loraine Foster of LaBoca, Republic of Panama; sister, Helen Louise Lowman of Derry, and seven grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl and Kenneth, and a son, David of Ponte Vedra, Fla., in 1994.
Requiem Mass was held Saturday, Sept. 9, in The Blessed Sacrament, Clermont.
Ron Becker Funeral Home, Clermont, in charge.
Interment was Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, in Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.

William C. Simpson
William C. Simpson, 82, died Sept. 15, 2000, at Veterans Hospital, Johnson City, Tenn. Formerly of New Florence. Survived by wife of 50 years, Matilda Jean Simpson, and several nieces and nephews. Last of eight children of John and Myrtle (Willard) Simpson. Preceded in death by brothers, James, Marshal and Oliver, and sisters, Virginia Salgiver, Dorothy Shoup, Elizabeth Raab and Alice Gilman. Wounded World War II veteran. Memorial services were held Monday at the East Side Southern Baptist Church, Elizabethton, Tenn., with the Rev. Dwight Hobbs officiating. Military services followed. Memorial gifts may be made to East Side Baptist Church, 1509 Siam Road, Elizabethton, Tenn. 37643.

George A. Caldwell
George A. Caldwell, 60, of New Florence RD1, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at UPMC Lee Regional. Born June 30, 1940, in Bolivar, a son of the late James H. and E. Frances (Krouse) Caldwell. Also preceded in death by brother, Dallas Caldwell. Survived by wife, the former Mary Ann Chesla; a son, George B. of New Florence RD1; a daughter, Carol of Woodbridge, Va.; and two brothers, James and Lewis, both of New Florence RD1. He was a retired employee of Bethlehem Steel, Johnstown works, mechanical department. Services were held Tuesday at the Kenneth A. Stuart funeral Home, New Florence Home with the Rev. Bonnie King officiating. Interment was in Fairfield Cemetery.

Louise Matilda (Holby) Vaira-Empfield
Louise Matilda (Holby) Vaira-Empfield, 94, of North Versailles, formerly of Pitcairn and New York, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2000. Born March 25, 1906 in Bairdstown, Pa., she was an avid Chautauqua Lake fisher. She had made her home with her niece, Mary Malloy, for 10 years. She was preceded in death by her two former husbands, Louis Vaira and Ed Empfield. She is survived by Mr. Vaira's three sons, Eugene of New Hampshire, Louis of Massachusetts and Charles of North Versailles; and many nieces and nephews. She is the last of the Holby family. Funeral services were held Monday in the Alpha Lutheran Church. The Jobe Funeral Home Inc., Turtle Creek was in charge of the arrangements.

Darren P. Clawson
Darren P. Clawson, 35, of Oak Island, N.C., formerly of Blairsville, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at Oak Island. He was born Jan. 14, 1965, in Latrobe, a son of J. Wayne and Arlene Olsen Clawson of Blairsville. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. and the L.O.O.M., both in Long Beach, N.C. Darren graduated from Blairsville High School in 1983, and was employed by Advanced Waste Management as a heavy equipment operator. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Jeffrey W. Clawson Sr. of Blairsville and Michael D. Clawson of Indiana, Pa.; two sisters, Bonnie Stipcak and her husband, David and Kathie Jones and her husband, Ron, all of Blairsville; eight nieces and nephews; and a great-niece. Private services were held in the Richard L. Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsville, with Pastor Doug McCord officiating. Interment in Blairsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Four Footed Friends, Cornell Road, Blairsville, PA 15717.
