James E. McDonald Sr. - - 1936 - 2000
James E. McDonald, Sr., 64, 615 18th St. SE, Minot, died Sunday, October 1, 2000, at University Hospital, Denver, Colorado.
James was born January 5, 1936, in Marks, Mississippi, the son of Albert and Lucille (Spenser) McDonald. He was raised and attended school in Marks, MS and also Lafayette, IN.
In 1952 he entered the United States Air Force and served in Germany, Vietnam and Turkey. In 1959, while stationed in England he married Annamarie Norrenberg. They lived in England until October of 1962, when they moved to McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey. After several years in New Jersey and a five year tour in Germany they moved to Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, in August of 1970. In August of 1978 he retired from the Air Force and the family moved to Minot. Annemarie died on March 25, 1994. While in Minot James worked for Pietsch Sign and also owned a store where he sold Electrolux products.
He married Judith Christensen on March 24, 2000.
Survivors: Wife, Judith McDonald, Minot; son, James E. McDonald, Jr., and his wife Michelle, Oakdale, MN; stepson, Justin Kossan, Minot; stepdaughter, Joleen Kossan, Minot; two grandchildren, Mattie and Terrence McDonald; one step-grandson, Jacob Walsh; brothers, Willie McDonald and wife Justine, Chicago, Ill; Charles Nichols and wife, Joyce, Atlanta, GA; and Albert McDonald, Chicago, Ill; sisters, Edna Mae Gregory and Louistean Griffin, both of Lafayette, IN; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Annamarie, and brother, George Nichols.
Memorial Service: Saturday, October 7, 2000, at 11:00 a.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

James McElwain - - 1936 - 2001
James McElwain, 64, Max, died Thursday, January 11, 2001 in the Garrison hospital.
James was born March 13, 1936, in Minot, ND, the son of Gordon and Fryne (Solberg) McElwain. He was raised and educated in Max and graduated from Max High School in 1954.
He married Joann Nett of Lansford, in Minot on May 25, 1963. The couple lived in Max and Jim farmed his entire life with his dad and then with his sons. He started McElwain Fencing in 1958, then McElwain Construction in 1966. Jim's son, John joined him in 1986 and they continued farming and construction up to the time of his death.
Jim was a life-long member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Max and served on the church council. He was on the Max City Council for 31 years and was a volunteer firefighter and a charter member of the Jaycees. Jim served on the board of directors of Farm Services, was a civic club member and partner in the Max Development and member of the Max Community Enterprise. He was also a member of the Eagles Aerie, Minot.

Nellie Marie McIlroy - - 1905 - 2000
Nellie Marie (Lyons) McIlroy, 95, 3205 10th St. SW, Minot, died Wednesday, December 20, 2000, of natural causes at her residence.
She was born September 28, 1905, in Dayton Township, Nelson County the daughter of John F. and Mande (Huntly) Lyons. She was reared and educated in Tolna, ND, and graduated from Tolna High School. After graduation she attended Mayville College, Mayville, ND and graduated with a teachers certificate in the fall of 1923. After graduation she moved to Glenburn and taught at the Glenburn School. Later she moved to Williston where she taught for one year then she returned to Glenburn and resumed teaching at Glenburn School.
She married Dean McIlroy in December of 1928, in Glenburn. The couple lived and farmed in the Glenburn area until 1988 when they moved to Minot. Dean died on January 29, 1992, in Minot. Nellie continued to live with her son, Carl and daughter-in-law until the time of her death.
She was a member First Baptist Church, Glenburn. She was a former member of the Glenburn School Board and the Vansign Homemakers Club. She was a 4-H leader and was inducted into the Renville County Hall of Fame for her numerous hours of community service.
Survivors: sons, Dean McIlroy and his wife Linda, Bismarck, ND and Carl McIlroy, and his wife Peggy, Glenburn; daughters, Jean Paulson and her husband Gordon, Great Falls, MT, and Joyce McGlenn, Anchorage, AK; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sister, Ettie Slawson, Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean, parents, sister, Evalyn Lyons and brother, John Lyons.
Funeral Service: Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Visitation: Tuesday, December 26, 2000 from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot. In the spring of 2001.

Kit Meier - - 1950 - 2000
Kit Frances Meier, 50, 1115 12th Ave. SW, Minot, ND, died Sunday, December 3, 2000, in a Minot Medical Center.
Kit was born on February 17, 1950, in Valley City, ND, the daughter of John and Frances (Gregorson) Peterson. He was reared and educated in Devils Lake and graduated from Devils Lake High School. She then attended and graduated from Moorhead Area Vocational Technical Institute with an Associate Degree in accounting. She lived with her husband and family for 17 years in Moorhead, MN. They owned and operated Stonegate Kennels and Pet Shop in Moorhead MN, from 1986 until 1991. They have been living in Minot, ND for the last ten years.
Kit was a charter member of the Fort Totten Little Theater in Devils Lake.
Survivors: husband, Ronald L. Meier, Minot, son, Christopher J. Meier and his wife, Lynee, Grand Forks, ND; daughter, Kimberly A. Meier, Minot, ND; one granddaughter, Kailynn Meier; She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Frances Peterson and brother, John (Jack) Peterson.

He was born on October 15, 1917, in Fargo, ND, the son of Pete and Thora (Pederson) Miller. He lived with his parents in Fargo until the age of eight. His family moved to Bismarck, where he attended school until the age of sixteen. He moved to Salt Lake City, UT, and worked in the Utah copper mine until 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army, and served in World War II from 1943 through 1945. After his honorable discharge, he operated a shoe repair shop in Marysville, CA, from 1945 to 1952. He met Maxine Berger in Marysville. They were married on October 6, 1951, in Reno, NV. They lived in Marysville for a time, then they moved to Fergus Falls, MN, where they lived until 1957. They moved to Minot in 1958, and later opened the Busy Bee Shoe Repair Shop in downtown Minot. He owned and operated the repair shop until his retirement in 1978.
Those Most Honored To Share In His Life: Wife, Maxine, Minot; four sons, Paul, Perry, and Palmer, all of Minot, Peter, Spearfish, SD; three daughters, Peggy Smith, Minot, Phyllis Miller, Belle Fourche, SD, and Penny Holdaway, Spring Creek, NV; 23 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. His parents and one infant son, Pat Christian, preceded him in death.

Clarence Miller - - 1907 - 2000
Clarence Miller, 93, rural Donnybrook, ND, died Friday, November 24,2000 at his home of natural causes.
He was born on March 13th, 1907, to John and Mary (Baumgartner) Miller of the family farm in Ivanhoe Township, Renville County, rural Donnybrook, ND. He attended a rural school in that area, and farmed with his Dad for several years.
He married Eva Gregoire on June 19th, 1934, in Donnybrook, ND at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. They made their home on his Dad's farm where they raised small grains, cattle, sheep and farmed with horses. In 1944 they moved to their present farm in Greenbush township, Ward County, rural Donnybrook, and continued to farm there until he retired in 1971. He enjoyed driving tractor and helping with the harvest until age of 86. He remained living on the farm until present.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Donnybrook, where he was a trustee. A member of the Knights of Columbus, Minot. He served as director on several boards, including the Triple A in Ivanhoe township, the Greenbush township board, the Burke Divide rural electric cooperative board and the Gooseneck Soil Conservation board.
Throughout his life he liked to hunt ducks and deer and well as try his luck at fishing with his neighbors, friends, and family.

MSgt Karl E. Mitchell - - 1962 - 2000
Master Sergeant Karl E. Mitchell, Minot Air Force Base, 38, 1601 Sunset Boulevard, Minot, died Friday, November 10, 2000, while deployed to Prince Sultan Air Force Base, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He was born October 2, 1962, in Aurora, CO, the son of Kenneth E. and Joyce V. (Carlson) Mitchell. He was raised and educated in San Bernadino, CA, and graduated from San Gorgonio High School in 1980. He entered the service on December 14, 1982. He completed his technical training in the spring of 1983, and graduated as an electrical apprentice. He was assigned to the 7020th Civil Engineer Squadron, Royal Air Force Base, Fairford, England. He married Jennifer Taylor on July 18, 1986, in Cirencester, Glos, England. From May, 1986 to December 1993, he and his family were assigned to the 5th Civil Engineer Squadron, Minot AFB, ND. From December 1993 to December 1994, he served a remote tour in Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea. He returned to Minot AFB, and remained until September , 2000. He was selected for instructor duty and had been reassigned to Detachment 1, 823rd Red Horse Squadron, Tyndall AFB, Florida, at the time of his death. He was also co-owner of the Landing Bar.
He was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Force Commendation Medal, with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Air Force Achievement Award, with five Oak Leaf Clusters. He was selected as Senior Non Commissioned Officer of the Month in May 1998, while serving in Saudi Arabia. Previously, he had been honored as Non Commissioned Officer of the Year in 1995, Senior Non Commissioned Officer of the Year 1997, and Senior Non Commissioned Officer of the quarter, 2nd quarter, 2000, while assigned to Minot AFB. He graduated as a Distinguished Graduate from the Non Commissioned Officers Academy in 1993, and was selected to attend the Senior Non Commissioned Officers Academy. In 1995, he received an Associates Degree in Electrical Technology from the Air Force Community College.
He was an active member of the 5th Civil Engineer Top Four at Minot AFB. He was active in the MAFB Boy Scouts Group on the late 1980's, and was scout laison at one time.
He is survived by his wife Jennifer; and two children, Nathan, age 6, and Nicole, age 3, all of Minot; two brothers, John Corbitt and wife Margie, Alba, TX, and Ted Corbitt and wife Virginia, Chesapeake, VA. His parents and grandparents preceded him in death.
Memorials are preferred to Air Force Aid Society, 1745 Jefferson David Highway #202, Arlington, Virginia, 22202, or the Karl E. Mitchell Memorial Fund, Northern Tier Credit Union, Minot, ND.
Memorial Service: Friday, November 17, 2000 at 10 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot, ND.

Marjorie Ann Anderson Moran - - 1911 - 2001
Marjorie Ann Anderson Moran, 90, of 305 8th Avenue NE, Minot, died Thursday in a Minot nursing home.
She was born on February 7, 1911, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to William and Anna Jones. She moved with her family to the United States in 1912 to Minot, where she has lived since. She was reared and educated in the Minot area, graduating from Minot High School in 1928. After her graduation, she married Clarence Anderson on May 1, 1929 in Minot. She worked as a bailiff for Ward County and District courts at Minot for over 30 years. She also was employed by the John Moses Air Force Regional Hospital for five years. Mr. Anderson died in 1964. She then married L.C. "Doc" Moran on November 25, 1969, in Minot. She then was employed at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot from 1974 until 1976. Mr. Moran passed away in April of 1993. She has resided at the Trinity Nursing Home since May of 1994.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, served as past president of the Women's Association of the Presbyterian Church, and also served as an Elder of the church, was a life member of the Presbyterian National Board of Missions, member of the North Central Mental Health and Retardation Board, charter member of the Minot Recreational Board, was a charter officer in the First Order of the Rainbow Girls in the Eastern Star, life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, served as Past State Chairman of Americanism for the State American Auxiliary, was a former jury commissioner, past member of the Ward County Cancer Committee, was chairman of the First Group of Grey Ladies of the Red Cross, life member of the ND P.T.A., and was past president of the Minot P.T.A.. She also was very active in city bowling leagues for over 25 years.
Survivors: son, Henry Anderson, Minot; step-sons, Richard Moran, Fairbury, IL, William (Bill) Moran, Minot, John Moran, Longmont, CO and Tom Moran, Lyons, CO; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 18 step grandchildren and 13 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; son, William F. Anderson; step-son, Robert Moran and sister, Pauline Jones.
Memorial Service: Tuesday, February 27, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Minot.

Millie Morse - - 1906 - 2001
Millie Morse, 94, 819 4th St. SW, Minot, died Wednesday, February 7, 2001, in the Rockview Good Samaritan Center, Parshall.
Millie was born to Lars C. and Tea L. (Erickson) Larson, on December 18, 1906, on the family farm in Ree Township, near Hartland, ND. She graduated from Donnybrook High School in 1924. She then attended Minot State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate in 1925. She started teaching school in 1926 near Max, ND in a one room school house. In 1930 she returned to Minot State Teachers College where she earned her Standard Teaching Degree and Life Certificate. She taught in various areas throughout the years, including Sanish, Hartland, Epworth, St. John and Lonetree, all in North Dakota. She taught for 18 years at Berthold until retiring in 1970. In 1937, she married Myron "MC" Morse. They lived in Souris, ND until 1942, when they moved to Bismarck. They lived in Lonetree and Bowbells for a short time before moving to Minot. Her husband died on December 15, 1972.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Minot where she a member of a church circle and also taught Sunday School. She was a former member of the Florol Rebekah Lodge #14. After retiring she enjoyed traveling, sewing and playing piano.
Survivors: Son, Rodney G. Morse and wife Darlene, Minot; four grandchildren, Steven Morse, KarleneHill, Susan Thompson and Timothy Morse; 10 great-grandchildren; twin sister, Selma Skaar, Parshall, ND; sisters, Gladys Schoenwald, Minot and Arlene Stockdill, Donnybrook. She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron; parents, Lars and Tea Larson; son, Darrell K. Morse; grandchildren, David Morse and Dawn Ann Morse; brothers, Harry, James and Arthur Larson and sister, Luella Hanson.

Lilian Monington - - 1937 - 2000
Lilian Monington, 63, 2509 5th St. NW, Minot, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at her home.
She was born August 6, 1937, in Ashely Bristol England, the daughter of David and Gwendoline (Savory) Thomas. She was reared and educated in England. She married Lavern Monington on February 7, 1959, in Wantage, England. They then moved to the United States and lived in several different places. They first lived in California and ended up in North Dakota in the early 1970's when her husband retired from the Airforce. In 1972, Lilian was active in an effort to help 280 orphans in China Beach DeNang and was featured on American radio, press and television. She wrote letters to the Commander up to the President, to help collect and deliver two tons of food, clothing and toys. She was very active in her beliefs.
While living in Minot, Lilian worked at Broadway Motel and Gordon's Holiday Spot for a time. Her husband preceded her in death on March 12, 1999.
She was a member of Burlington Baptist Church.
Survivors: sons, David and Douglas; daughters, Debbie Squibb and her husband Ron, Minot, Dawn Dove and her husband Larry, Bismarck, and Diane Blair and her husband John, San Diego, CA; 11 grandchildren, Jenifer, Stephanie and Melissa Squibb, Renee Stroklund, Eric and Carrie Dove, Erin, Christy and Michelle Monington, Alex and Katy Blair; one great grandson, Garret Taylor and one great grandchild on the way, Baby Stroklund; mother, Gwendoline, England; brother, David Thomas, England and Sister Dawn Shaw, England. Helen Grace Murrey - - 1909 - 2001
Helen Grace Murrey, 92, 415 7th St. NW, Minot, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in her home.
Helen was born January 27, 1909, on the family homestead, south of Lonetree, ND, the daughter of John and Clotilde (McDonald) McIsaac. She was raised in that area and graduated from school in Lonetree. She attended St. Francis School of Nursing, Minot, and graduated in 1930.
She married James W. Murrey, July 14, 1931, in Bowbells, ND. Following their marriage they lived in Minot where she worked in surgery at Trinity Hospital. She then worked in the offices of Dr. John Devine, Sr., Dr. John Devine, Jr., Dr. W.B. Huntley, and Dr. Raymond Vaaler, all Minot. Helen also worked as a public health nurse for the state of North Dakota. In 1961 she became the Infections Control Coordinator at St. Joseph Hospital, Minot, and also helped write the Infections Control Program for the North Dakota State Health Department. She retired in 1974 and was a volunteer for the Minot Meals on Wheels Program. Her husband died March 28, 1993.
She was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot, the North Dakota Nurses Association and was a member of the BLFE auxiliary, Minot.
Survivors: son, Bill (Joyce) Murrey, Minot; daughters, Mary Ann LeMay, Lansing, MI, and Bonnie (Richard) Lakomy, Farmington Hills, MI; seven grandchildren, Roxane (Rod) Sebolt, Richard Lakomy, Jr., Julie Dryden, James LeMay, Jaclyn, Joseph and Matthew Murrey; nine great-grandchildren, James LeMay, Jr., Nicolle LeMay, Sue Fritz, Jeremy Fritz, Ryan, Railey and Rory Sebolt, Michael Dryden and Kaitlin Dryden; sisters, Katherine Lorena Peladeau, Lowell, Mass, and Flora Jackie Haider, Olympia, WA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Elizabeth Neiss - - 1903 - 2001
Elizabeth Neiss, 97, Minot, formerly of Balta, died Thursday, February 22, 2001, in a Minot nursing home.
Elizabeth was born November 17, 1903, in Odessa, Russia, the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Wald) Stach. She came with her parents to the United States at the age of seven and homesteaded in the Karlsruhe area. She was raised and educated in the Karlsruhe area and worked as a helper for farmers.
On January 26, 1925 she married Frank Neiss, Sr. in Karlsruhe. They farmed near Balta until June, 1966 when they moved to Minot. Frank died October 18, 1966. She remained in Minot, but moved back to Balta for a time and then came back to Minot. She lived at the Bail Foster home in Minot, before becoming a resident of Trinity Nursing Home in 1998.
Elizabeth was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and a life-time member of St. Teresa's Guild, all Minot.
Survivors: Sons, Frank, Jr. and wife Eleanor, Leo, and Eugene and wife Sharon, all Minot; Henry and wife Donna, Williston, Edward and wife Helen, Sawyer, and Dennis and wife Ann, Green Bay, WI; 35 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren; sister, Catherine Zacher, Rugby; brother, Joe Stach and wife Ida, Oscoda, MI; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Catherine Garman; two infant sons; her parents, and three brothers.

Iva B. Nelsen - - 1903 - 2000
Iva B. Nelsen, 97, Kenmare, died Tuesday, November 28, 2000, in the Kenmare hospital.
Iva was born January 4, 1903, in Rock Springs, WI, the daughter of Mark Cornelius and Eulodia (Tibbits) Hitchcock. She was raised and educated in that area.
On June 27, 1923, she married Peter E. Nelsen in Reedsburg, WI. Following their marriage the couple moved north of Kenmare where they farmed. Peter died on December 24, 1945. Iva moved into Kenmare where she lived until 1975, when she moved to Glendive, Montana for a time. In 1991 she entered the Kenmare Baptist Home, where she lived until two years ago when she entered the skilled care unit of the Kenmare Hospital.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, while living on the farm north of Kenmare, and while in Kenmare she attended Nazareth Lutheran Church.

Margaret Nelson - - 1908 - 2000
Margaret Nelson, 92, 600 South Main, Minot, died Thursday in a Minot nursing home.
She was born April 3, 1908, at Upham, ND, the daughter of John and Augusta (Berg) Anderson. She attended school at Little Deep, near Upham.
On November 9, 1927, she married Neville A. Nelson in Granville, ND. After their marriage they farmed in Upham from 1927 until 1941. They then moved to the Granville area where they farmed until 1946. They retired from farming in 1946 and moved to Eugene, Oregon. They lived there for two years before moving to the Deering area. In 1977 they moved to Minot.
Margaret worked at the Mohall Hospital, Trinity dietary and Minot State University cafeteria. Margaret and Neville were one of the first couples to move into the Henry Towers in Minot. Neville died February 20, 1989. She continued to live at the Henry Towers until entering ManorCare Health Services on December 11, 1997.
Margaret attended First Assembly of God Church, Minot, ND.

Myrtle Marie Nelson - - 1913 - 2000
Myrtle Marie Nelson, 87, Ryder, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, in her home.
Myrtle was born August 26, 1913, in Eddyside, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Peter Jens and Jennie Fredericka (Brown) Peterson. She moved to Kenmare with her parents when she was three years old. She was raised in Kenmare and attended school there graduating from Kenmare High School in 1931. The following year she took a one-year course in accounting and worked for Dr. Halliday in Kenmare.
Myrtle married Melvin C. Nelson on July 23, 1933, in Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, following a three-year courtship. They lived on a farm in the Kenmare area the first five years. In 1938 the family moved into Kenmare where Mel worked for Farmer's Union Oil Co. In 1942 they moved to Ryder where he became manager of the Ryder Farmer's Union Oil. Myrtle was bookkeeper there and continued in that position until she and Mel retired on June 1, 1975, after 33 years of service to the Farmer's Union Oil Company.
Myrtle was also treasurer-manager of the Ryder Co-op Credit Union for 25 years and secretary of the Ryder Farmer's Union Local for 13 years. Myrtle became a United States citizen around 1947. She and Mel were the proud parents of two daughters, Claudette, born in December 1937, and Penny, born in August of 1953. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the American Lutheran Church Women at Ryder, and a former member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare. She taught Sunday School at both churches and was church organist at St. John's for several years. Myrtle and Mel were members of the Belles and Beaux Square Dance Club.
Myrtle loved learning and wished she could have attended college, but money was scarce in those days. She was grateful for the year she studied accounting which she excelled in. When she was the bookkeeper at the Farmer's Union Oil in Ryder, the auditor would comment on the work she did. Everything was so neat and just perfect and easy to audit. It was a joy to check her work. She loved plants and flowers, loved to crochet, loved to travel and fish and was so handy at making things and decorating. Her family was her joy. She really enjoyed playing piano and organ.

Wilma Nygaard - - 1908 - 2000
Wilma Flora (Paul) Nygaard, born on August 27, 1908, Noonan, ND, died October 8, 2000, Kenmare, ND
She was born on August 27, 1908, on her parents' farm in Divide County, south of Noonan, ND, the daughter of Herman and Lena (Bummer) Paul. She attended country school near her home. She graduated from Minot Teacher's College in 1936. She began working in Noonan and Portal, ND, as a schoolteacher. During World War II, she worked in the shipyards in Tacoma, WA, for several years. She returned to North Dakota, and resumed her role as a teacher, instructing children of all ages and levels. She was teaching in Flaxton, ND, when she met her future husband, Helmer Nygaard. They were married on June 15, 1948, in Noonan. They lived in Flaxton for 23 years. She also taught in Ray and Riverdale, ND. In 1970, they moved to Kenmare, ND, where they since have lived. She had recently entered the Kenmare Baptist Home.
Wilma was very active in the Kenmare community. She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, the Kenmare Coffee Club, the Kenmare Senior Citizens, and the Red Cross.

Arthur M. Oberg - - 1913 - 2001
Arthur M. Oberg, 88, Parshall, formerly of Ryder and Makoti, died Monday, March 19, 2001, in a Parshall nursing home.
He was born March 5, 1913, in Ryder, ND, the son of Andrew and Marie (Engebretson) Oberg. He grew up on his mother's homestead in Mountrail County, southwest of Makoti. He attended grade school and two years of high school at Mountrail Consolidated School. He was confirmed in the Hope Lutheran Church of Makoti. He farmed with his father and later decided to go to Montana to work on the Fort Peck Dam where he helped build shafts to control the water flow of the dam.
He married Alva Knutson on March 5, 1937, at Glasgow, MT. They moved to Spokane where he worked for Washington State and Oregon building warehouses for the Navy. They moved to Cutbank, MT and he worked in a Chevrolet Garage for a few years. He and Alva moved back to North Dakota in 1945 and lived in Ryder. He returned to farming and also worked at Ted's Garage. Later they built a home on the farm where they lived until poor health made changes for them. Alva died in 1994. Art then moved to the Rockview Nursing Home in Parshall where he has since resided.
Art ran a dirt and gravel business for many years. He was active in church and community affairs. He served on the elevator board, was active in building the Makoti Senior Citizens building, was a member of the Ryder Lutheran Church and Hope Lutheran Church, Makoti. He was a member of the Makoti Senior Citizens and the Elks Lodge, Minot. He enjoyed baseball and bowling. He and his wife loved to travel when they had the time. He was one of the founders of the Makoti Threshing Show. Art loved the farm and the prairies of North Dakota.

Clifford L. Olson - - 1913 - 2002
Clifford L. Olson, 88, Glenburn, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, in a Minot hospital.
Clifford was born October 6, 1913 in Ree Township, rural Donnybrook, ND, the son of James and Martha (Larson) Olson. He was educated in the Donnybrook area and graduated from Donnybrook High School in 1932. He farmed with his parents, then worked on a ranch in Montana for a time before returning to the family farm in 1935.
He married Olive Bjelland on April 25, 1938 at the Olson farm. In 1942 they moved to a farm near Tagus, ND until moving to Glenburn in 1947 where they farmed and raised cattle until 1981. They retired and moved into Glenburn.
Growing up he attended the Aurelia Moravian Church and the Hartland Lutheran Church. He was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenburn.
He enjoyed woodworking. He made many items which were given to relatives and friends. He also liked to read. He found great joy and satisfaction in farming and watching things grow. His family was his pride and joy with many good memories of the children growing up and his experiences with them.
He was a former member of the Moose Lodge and a current member of the Sons of Norway Thor Lodge 4-067, both in Minot. He also belonged to the Glenburn Senior Citizens.
Survivors: Wife, Olive Olson, Glenburn; daughters, Jean (Robert) Pletan, Wilsall, MT, Joyce Rowene (Guy) Vincent, Seattle, WA; daughter-in-law, Susan Olson, Bowbells; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Laura Olson, Minot, and Sadie Olson, Port Orchard, WA; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Harlen C. Olson - - 1916 - 2000
Harlen C. Olson, 84, 1937 10 St NW, Minot, died Saturday, December 9, 2000 in a Minot Medical Center.
He was born February 14, 1916 on the family homestead nine miles south of Parshall, ND, the son of Nels and Sigrid Olson. He was raised and educated in Plaza, ND. After his schooling, he moved to California and worked for a time. In the early 1940's, he moved to Fairbanks, AK, and worked as a carpenter in the construction field. He met and married his wife, Carmen, while in Alaska and the two of them remained in Alaska for several years. They moved to the Kwajalein Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, where he worked as a foreman of a construction company that built government contract buildings. After many years, they moved to Seattle, WA, where they lived until his wife, Carmen, died in 1985. Two years later, he returned to Minot to be closer to his family. In Minot, he met Ingrid Billigmeier, who had been a teacher in Minot. They were married from April 20, 1991,to January 15, 1999, when Ingrid passed away. He remained in Minot until the time of his death.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway, both of Minot.
Survivors: sisters, Ruth Hector, Crosby, Nora Kankovsky and her husband William, Minot; brother, Norman Olson, Plaza, ND; sister-in-law, Fern Olson, Minot. Several nieces and nephews also survive. His wives, parents and brother, Truman Olson, preceded him in death.

Norman L. Olson - - 1927 - 2000
Norman L. Olson, 73, 1313 32 Ave SW, Minot, died Monday, December 4, 2000 at a Minot medical center.
He was born April 11, 1927 in Velva, ND, the son of Orvin and Lydia (Haga) Olson. He was raised in the Bergen area and attended school there. He helped on the family farm with his father for several years. He was active in the ND Golden Gloves, and traveled the state for many boxing matches and competitions. At the age of 22, he started working at Verendrye Electric Cooperative in Velva, and worked as a lineman for 35 years. He married Elaine Ellison on October 8, 1949 at the Ellison family farm, ten miles east of Velva. They moved to Harvey for several years. In 1962, they moved to Minot, where they lived for the remainder of his life. He retired from Verendrye Electric in the early 1980's.
He was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, Harvey Jaycees, and the Eagles Aerie and Moose Lodge, both of Minot. He was a member and organizer of the Men's Senior Pool League in Minot. He was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union.

Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. His father preceded him in death.
Funeral Service: Thursday, December 7, 2000 at 2:00 pm at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, ND
Visitation: Wednesday, December 6, 2000 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.
Burial: Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Bergen, ND.

She was born November 17, 1917, in rural Kenmare, ND, the daughter of Lillie and William McGillivray. She was reared and educated in Kenmare and graduated from Kenmare High School in 1935. Following high school she attended Minot Normal School in Minot and graduated, receiving her teachers certificate in 1937.
She married Earl Owens on March 18, 1939, at Bowbells, ND. She taught school in rural Chasely for one year and for three years she taught at Gins school in rural Bowbells, ND. On Labor Day 1946, Irene and Earl moved to Bowbells. Earl died on December 13, 1973. Irene remained in Bowbells the rest of her life.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Church women's group, Lakeside Homemakers and the American Legion Auxiliary, all of Bowbells. She was a former 4-H and Cub Scout leader and superintendent and Sunday school teacher.
Irene loved to bake and was famous for her pies and she also enjoyed crocheting.
