Carol S. Erickson - - 1919 - 2002
Carol S. Erickson, 82, 901 1st Ave. SW, Minot, died Friday, January 11, 2002, in a Minot medical center.
Carol was born February 12, 1919, Lancaster, MN, the daughter of Charles and Annie (Graham) McMillan. She was reared and educated in Lancaster and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1936. She moved to Minot and attended Trinity Nursing School and graduated in 1940. While attended nursing school she met Harley Erickson and the couple where married on December 25, 1945, in Minot.
In 1945, Carol and Harley moved to Grand Forks where Carol worked as a nurse for Grand Forks County. The couple returned to Minot after Harley graduated from college. Carol worked as public health nurse until her children where born.
In the fall of 1970, Carol went to work for Dr. Kenneth Amstutz as his morning nurse. She worked there for over 25 yrs and retired at the age of 74. Harley died on June 19, 1998, in Minot. She continued to live in Minot until her death.
Carol loved playing bridge, traveling, cooking, playing golf every Wednesday with her women league and especially spending time with her family and friends.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, was active in the church circles and served on the Altar Guild. She was a lifetime member of the Minot Country Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Minot Art Club, the Trinity Alumni Association, was a founding member and instrumental in the continuation of the American Field Service, and the P.EO. Chapter, all of Minot. She was also very active with the Parent Teachers Association when her children where growing up.
Survivors: Daughters, Nancy Langseth and her husband Darwin, Minot, and Jane Johnson and her husband, Rodd, Plymouth, MN; grandchildren, Nicholas and Annie Langseth and Andy Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley, her parents, brother, Maitland and sisters, Florence and Margaret.
Funeral Service: Tuesday, January 15, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. First Lutheran Church, Minot
Visitation: Monday, January 14, 2002, from Noon until 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot

Alvin "Al" Felan - - 1937 - 2001
Alvin "Al" Felan, 64, Sun City, AZ, formerly of Kenmare, died Tuesday, September 25, 2001 in Sun City.
He was born September 6, 1937, in Kenmare, ND, to Arthur and Marie Felan. He was raised on the family farm southwest of Kenmare in Kandiyohi Township, Burke County, ND and also attended country school in that area. While living in Kandiyohi Township, Al was active in a 4H group. He helped on the family farm until January of 1960 when until he moved to Arizona because of ill health. He lived in the Phoenix area and did carpentry until March of 2001 until he was unable to work anymore because of ill health.
Survivors: brothers, Marvin Felan (Marie), Minot and Andrew Felan, Sun City, AZ; sister, Vi Torno (Delton), Minot and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside service: Monday, October 8, 2001, 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare.

Joyce Fjeldahl - - 1926 - 2001
Joyce (Haugen) Fjeldahl, 75, 1701 65th St. SW, Minot, died Saturday, November 17, 2001, at her residence of natural causes.
She was born, January 23, 1926, in DesLacs, ND, the daughter of Harold and Catharine (Groninger) Haugen. She was reared and educated in DesLacs and graduated from DesLacs High School. After graduation Joyce moved with her sister to San Francisco, CA. In the early 1940's, she returned to Minot.
She married Peter Fjeldahl in Sydney, MT, on August 11, 1945. She went to work for Haugen Construction Service, Minot in 1971, as a secretary and bookkeeper working there for 20 years. They lived and farmed on Peter's family farmstead until 1974, when they moved to Minot. Peter died on May 10, 1999, in Minot. Joyce continued to live in Minot until her death.
Survivors: sons, David and Roger, Fargo, and Peter Fjeldahl and his wife Mary, Berthold, ND; daughter, Catherine Howery and her husband David, Antler; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters, Gloria Cox and her husband Joe, Surrey, ND, Anna Rademacher and her husband Walter, Berthold, ND, Ruth Detlaff and her husband Ralph, Glenburn and Bonnie Patterson and her husband Clayton, Minot. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, her parents, brothers, Harold, Robert and Gary Haugen; and sisters, Jean, Faye, and Ida Haugen.
Funeral Service: Tuesday, November 20, 2001, at 11 a.m. at New Life Lutheran Church, Minot.
Visitation: Monday, November 19, 2001, from Noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Graveside Service: Rolling Green Cemetery, DesLacs, ND. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Aelrud F. Fleck - - 1925 - 2001
Aelred F. Fleck, 76, 300 South Main, died Saturday in a Minot nursing home.
He was born on May 19, 1925, to Frank and Theresia (Lutgen) Fleck in Richardton, ND. He was reared and educated in Richardton and attended St. Mary's School and the Assumption Abbey. In 1942, at age 17, he moved with his family to Dickinson. He graduated from Dickinson Model High School in 1943. Prior to high school graduation, he joined the US Navy Reserve. In October of 1943, he entered active duty and served during WWII. He served honorably aboard the USS Medocino in the Pacific Theatre of operation, including the invasion of Okinawa. He drove a troop landing craft and was injured during the invasion. After recovery in a VA hospital in 1946, he returned to Dickinson, where he joined the family business, Fleck's Furniture and Appliance. He married Dorothy Engelhart in 1947. He was an active community leader in Dickinson, working with the Boy Scouts, JayCees, American Legion, VFW and archery club. In 1962, he moved with his family to Minot. There, he was employed in a number of retail positions until failing health required an early retirement. He had lived at the Milton Young Towers for a number of years until moving to Manor Care. His wife died in 1982.
Survivors: daughter, Johnnie Cashdollar, Piscataway, NJ; son, Earl (Connie) Fleck, Shakopee, MN; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill (Jean) Fleck, Winter Haven, FL and Hank (Gen) Fleck, Dickinson, ND. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (1982); parents and sister, Irene Turner.
Funeral: Tuesday, October 9, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.
Visitation: one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial: North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, on Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m.

Lillian Fox - - 1914 - 2001
Lillian Elizabeth Fox, 86, Westhope, formerly of Kenmare and Minot, died Friday in a Westhope nursing home.
She was born September 30, 1914, in Paislie, ND, to Charles and Susan (Masek) Folkert. She was baptized in her family home near Northgate, ND. The family then moved North of Kenmare, where she was reared and educated. On October 14, 1937, she married Gordon Fox. They lived on the Fox family homestead where they farmed. In 1944, they moved to Kenmare and continued farming until retiring in the early 1970's. They wintered in Pharr, TX for two years. Her husband died in 1974. Lillian continued living in Kenmare until moving to Minot in the mid 1980's. In February of 1998 she entered the Westhope Nursing Home where she lived until her death.
As a young girl, Lillian was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was confirmed. She later became a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, at which she was a member for over 40 years. When she moved to Minot, she was a charter member of Bread of Life Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Edson Homemakers, the Senior Citizens and the Rebakah's Lodge, in which she held several offices, including District Officer, all of Kenmare. She stayed active in Birthday Club throughout the years in Kenmare and Minot.
Lillian loved to quilt and made afghans for everyone in her family. She also loved to make ceramics and did a lot of canning.
Survivors: son, Ron Fox (Joyce), Bismarck; daughters, Carole Hegg, Colorado Springs, CO and Sharon Lee (Darwin) Westhope; nine grandchildren, Shelley Igo (Richard), Brent Hegg (Patty), Ronda Fox, Linda Box (Tony), Cindy Maxwell (Merle), Brenda Thompson (Scott), Lori Berentson (Kelly), Heidi Mercil (Chris) and Brett Lee; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, Chester Folkert (Yvonne), Minot; sister, Myrtle Leet, Kenmare and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, granddaughter, Susan Hegg and brother, Lloyd Folkert.
Funeral: Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare.
Visitation: Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Eugene "Gene" Fuchs - - 1925 - 2001
Eugene "Gene" J. Fuchs, 76, 305 8th Ave. NE, Minot, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001, in a Minot nursing home.
He was born May 14, 1925 in Richardton, ND, the son of Samuel and Magdelena (Walth) Fuchs. He was raised and educated in the Hebron and Richardton areas and moved to Zap, ND with his family in the l930's where he graduated from Zap High School.
He farmed with his father, then entered the United States Army at the conclusion of World War II. Following his discharge he returned to North Dakota and enrolled at the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, majoring in economics and history. Gene graduated from UND and accepted a job as a field representative at the Minot office of the Social Security Administration. There he met his future wife, Sarah Jeanne "Sally" O'Brien. They were married on June 26, 1954, in St. Paul, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Minot. Gene retired from the Social Security Administration as assistant manager in 1986 after working there for 34 years. Following retirement he was Senior Health Insurance Coordinator, a volunteer position with the State Insurance Department. His wife, Sally died on November 6, 2000.
Gene was a member of Bread of Life Lutheran Church, and the Golden K Kiwanis, both Minot. He was a member of the local chapter of the National Federation of Federal Employees, and the AARP, where he served as congressional district coordinator. He had traveled with a group to Washington, D.C., to share his insights with the nation's congressional delegation, and appeared on the 5:30 p.m. CBS News broadcast "Eye on America." He loved golfing, gardening, lawn work, bowling, hunting and enjoyed fishing with his granddaughter.
Survivors: Daughter, Virginia "Ginger" M. Blowers, Minot; sons, John Fuchs, Williston, David Fuchs, and Steve Fuchs, both Fargo; two granddaughters, Megan Rising, Minot and Emily Blowers, Grand Forks; one great-grandson, Elias Rising, Rhododendron, OR; sister, Laura (Elmer) Gustafson, Dickinson; step-sister, Ruby Converse, Bay City, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally; parents, step-mother, Anna Fuchs; brothers, Arnold and Norman Fuchs; sister, Charlene Huber; step-sister, Charlotte Kuschel, and step-brother, Werner Benefit.
Memorial Service: Saturday, September 8, 2001, at 1:30 p.m., at Bread of Life Lutheran Church, Minot.

Annie "Nancy" Garner - - 1917 - 2001
Annie "Nancy" Garner, 83, 305 8th St. NE, Minot, died Wednesday in a Minot nursing home.
She was born in Roche Percee, Sask., Canada, November 3, 1917, to Edward and Annie Pierce. She attended school there and in Estevan, Sask. She worked in the family owned grocery store in Bienfait, Sask. And also worked in Regina.
On May 10, 1939, she married John "Jack" Garner in Timmins, Ontario, Canada. They moved to the United States in 1949, living first in West Virginia and then moving to Hazen until 1955 when they moved to Minot. She worked at Ann's Fashions, Union National Bank, First Service Bank and First Western Bank and Trust, retiring in 1983. Her husband died June 1, 1988.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Minot Senior Citizens.
Survivors: daughter, Carolyn "Cari" Odegard and husband Jim, Grand Forks, ND; son, Edward W. Pierce Garner, Clovis, CA; three grandchildren, Lori Glazier and husband Ross, Rochester, MN, Eric Odegard and wife Lynn, Woodland Hills, CA and William "Will" Garner, Clovis, CA; three great-grandchildren, Karina and Rachel Glazier and Eric James "E.J." Odegard; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents' six brothers and three sisters.

Norbert Goebel - - 1918 - 2001
Norbert Goebel, 82, 1200 72nd St. SE, Minot, died Wednesday in a Minot hospital.
He was born December 26, 1918, in Geyser, MT, to Fred and Sophia (Hohn) Goebel. At the age of five, he moved with his family to a farm south of Minot where he spent his younger years until moving to a farm in the Foxholm area where he finished his schooling in a country school.
He worked on the family farm until the outbreak of World War II. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1942 at Fort Snelling, MN, and did his basic training at Fort Leonardwoods, MO. He served under General George S. Patton in the European Theater with the 772nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on October 29, 1945. Upon his discharge, he returned to Foxholm and farmed in the Burlington area. He later farmed for Einar Madsen at Foxholm. On June 26, 1965, he married Agnes Hoffman-Hunter at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. They lived in Burlington where Norbert continued to Farm until he suffered a stoke in March of 1967, from which he never fully recovered. Many of his good friends completed his farming for him that year. He then sold his equipment and moved to Minot after his wife retired and his stepchildren were through school. They then moved to the family home in Burlington and most recently lived at Edgewood Vista. In the early 90's Norbert and Agnes spent winters in Arizona.
He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and St. Leo's Catholic Church, both of Minot, the Burlington Friendly Seniors group and the Minot Senior Citizens. He was also a member of the 772nd Tank Destroyer Battalion Association, the 75th Division Veterans Association Inc. and the Minot American Legion.
Survivors: Wife, Agnes, Minot; stepchildren, Mary Ann (William) Ross, Minot, Peggy (William) Geyer, Williston, Irene Hemstock, Springdale, AR, Patricia (Bruce) Knight, Murray, UT, Joan (Scott) Thomason, Palestine, TX, William (Robin) Hunter, El Cajon, CA, Thomas (Mary) Hunter, Fort Worth, TX and Charles Hunter, Springdale, AR; 15 stepgrandchildren; 25 stepgreat-grandchildren; aunt, Rose Allen, Moses Lake, WA: sisters, Marie Fuchs and Deloris (Tony) Feist, all of Minot, and Sally Melland, Williston; brothers, Herbert (Beulah) Goebel, Burlington, Clarence Goebel, Ruthville, and Francis (Gerry) Goebel, Minot, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John and Theodore, and sister, Alvina.

Clarence Robert Alvin Hall - - 1979 - 2001
Clarence Robert Alvin Hall, 22, Sioux City, IA, formerly of Carpio, Granville, and Minot, died Tuesday, October 9, 2001, at his home in Sioux City of leukemia.
He was born February 21, 1979, in Minot, ND, to Oliver and Sue Hall. He was reared in Carpio and later moved with his family to Minot. He attended Perkett Elementary School in Minot through the fifth grade. His mother then home schooled him in Minot and later when they moved to Granville. He graduated in 1997. Following graduation, he went to work at Sykes in Minot as a computer analyst. He worked at Sykes for over a year before moving to Sioux City, where he worked for Gateway Computer until the time of his death.
He was a member of Carpio Lutheran Church. Clarence enjoyed a variety of music and spent a lot of time on his computer. He also enjoyed horseback riding and sharing good times with his family and his friends.
Survivors: Fiancée, Robin Curphey, Sioux City; step children, Mykel (4) and John (2); mother, Sue Hall, Granville; brother, Knute Hall, Wisconsin; sisters, Karoline Vaagen (Jason) Granville, Clara Engh, Mandan, Kathy Evenson (Jim) Towner and Crysta-Lin Hall, Granville and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and two Aunts, Gertrude Weber and Clara Hall.

Dorothy Mae Hambek - - 1931 - 2001
Dorothy Mae Hambek, 69, 725 6th Ave. SW #5, Minot, died Thursday, October 18, 2001, in a Minot hospital.
She was born October 29, 1931, in Minot, to Raymond M. and Eileine L. (Ryan) Fritz. She was reared and educated in Minot. She was once married to Arlo Jacobson. They had five children together. On December 8, 1965, she married Leo Hambek. They lived in Minot for a short time before moving to the Hambek family farm 11 miles northeast of Minot. Leo died in August of 1974. Dorothy continued living on the farm for a short time before moving into Minot where she lived until the time of her death.
Dorothy loved to bowl and play bingo. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She was an animal lover and especially loved cats. She always kept cats for pets and treated them as members of her family.
Mom was a very special and wonderful part of our lives. We will miss her very much.
Survivors: son, James (Michele) Jacobson, Minot; daughters, Karla (Allen) Goldade, Minot, Kristi Jacobson, Salt Lake City, UT, Nancy (Darwin) Strand, Minot and Randi (Bruce) Feist, Towner; eight grandchildren; three grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Ann Donovan, Minot and Donna (Francis) Gores, Lisbon, ND.

Clarice Hansen - - 1915 - 2001
Clarice (James) Hansen, August 19, 1915, McKenzie County, ND- September 15, 2001, Stanley, ND
Clarice (James) Hansen was born August 19, 1915, to Fred and Clara Mae (Gray) James in McKenzie County, where she attended the James Country School and graduated from Alexander High School. She attended Minot State Teachers College where she obtained a teaching certificate. It was while teaching in the Donnybrook area that she met the love of her life and married Herman A. Hansen on July 6, 1936, a union that was to last 56 years. Together Clarice and Herman shared the work and joys of farm life in rural Donnybrook and the wonders of traveling throughout our country. Herman died on August 22, 1992, in Minot.
Clarice will be remembered as a caring and sharing member of her community. She took great pleasure in lending a helping hand wherever she saw the need. She was a wonderful gardener and sharing the bounty of the land was one of her favorite ways of reaching out to others. Her pastimes included being of help to someone, reading and playing cards.
For the past five years Clarice had been a resident of the Baptist Home Assisted Living Center in Kenmare. She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, and actively participated in Eunice Circle.

Regina Helen Hansen - - 1916 - 2001
Regina Helen Hansen, 85, 600 South Main St., Minot, formerly of Ryder, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002 in a Minot nursing home.
She was born June 5, 1916, in Anna Township, Ward County, near Ryder, ND, the daughter of Steve and Tillie (Rudningen) Guttormson, the fifth child born in the family of 13. She attended rural country schools in that area and later attended Minot High School before graduating from Ryder High School in 1935. Following high school, she attended Minot Business College and went on to teach in rural country schools in the Des Lacs area for a period of time. She then moved to Yonkers, NY, where she worked as a housemaid, cook and nanny for two years. After leaving New York, she moved to Seattle, WA where she worked in the shipyards for a short time, before moving back to the Ryder area where she cooked for the threshing crews. On November 5, 1946, she married Harald Hansen. They lived and farmed in Linton Township, Ward County, north of Ryder, until Harald died in 1988.
Regina lived in area foster care homes and entered Manor Care Health Services in December of 1993 where she has since lived. She enjoyed home Bible studies, cooking, quilting, sewing, crocheting, knitting, singing, gardening and canning. She was a member of the former Zion Lutheran Church, rural Minot and the ladies aid group there. While living in Minot she attended Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church and also kept her membership at Rose Valley Lutheran Church, rural Des Lacs where she was active in the ladies aid group.
Survivors: daughter, Judy Hansen, Minot and Joann Johnson, Douglas; sons, Harlan Hansen, Minot and Rodney Hansen and wife Jan, Ryder; four grandchildren, Kyle Johnson and wife Vangela, Brent Johnson, and Alyssa and Aaron Hansen; one great-grandson, Camden Johnson; brothers, Leonard Guttormson, New Rockford, ND and Oscar Guttormson, Berthold; sisters, Ella Leifson, Escondido, CA, Georgia Bonderenko, Minot and Pearl Karna, Makoti and several nieces and nephews. Kenneth was born May 1, 1948, in Rugby, ND, the son of Clarence and Nellie (Gerald) Hanson.
Survivors: Sister, Eileen (Ben) Gordon, and brother, William Hanson, all Bayfield, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Lyle L. Haugen, 51, Wichita, Kansas, formerly of Burlington, died Monday, October 29, 2001, in a Minot medical center.
Lyle was born May 21, 1950, in Minot, ND, the son of Roger Allen and Esther Marjorie (Newman) Haugen. He was raised and educated in Burlington and Des Lacs, and graduated from Des Lacs High School. He attended Mountain Plains Technical College in Glasgow, MT.
He was once married to Connie Weltikol. They were married July 25, 1969. He worked for Cessna Aircraft and later at Hall Industrial Manufacturing, both in Wichita, KS.
Lyle enjoyed motor sports and collected die-cast cars.

Roger Allen Haugen - - 1928 - 2001
Roger Allen Haugen, 73, 140 1st Ave. Burlington, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in a Mandan medical center due to health complications.
He was born March 28, 1928, in Rushford, MN to Walter and Volberg (Hansen) Haugen. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in the Rushford area.
He married Esther Newman on June 28, 1947, in Rushford, MN. They settled in Minot, ND before moving to Burlington where they have resided for over 48 years.
Roger worked for Voellers Furniture and helped construct the missile sites throughout the Minot area. He then started his own trucking company R.A. Hagen Trucking, and was employed with Six States and Koch Industries as a truck driver. He retired due to his disability in November of 1982. Since then he had enjoyed working in this garden, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Survivors: wife, Esther, Burlington; sons, Larry Haugen, Minot and his children Mike and Michelle; Lyle Hagen, Wichita, KS, and his children Rick, Mark, Jamie, Christa, and Jeff; daughters, Margaret Weltikol and her husband Galen, Minot, and their children Melanie, Chris, Brian, and Melissa; Sheri Berglund and her husband Michael, Minot Air Force Base, and their children Tyler and Catelyn; six great-grandchildren; brother, Wallace Haugen and his wife Velaira, Arvada, CO; sister, Margie Brevig and her husband Arlyn, Rushford, MN. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert, and his 1st grandson Troy Allen Haugen.

Jeremy was born on March 9, 1974, to Bertha Hauze in Minot, ND. He was reared and educated in Minot, attending Lincoln Grade School and Jim Hill Junior High. He graduated from Minot High School in 1992 and then went to college in Wahpeton for a short time. While in Wahpeton, he worked at the school library. Ill health forced Jeremy to return to Minot where he has since been living.
He was a confirmed member of Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot. He enjoyed hunting, reading and spending time on his computer.

Mildred Hertha Haykel, 89, 7715 11th Ave SE, Minot, died Monday, October 15, 2001, at a Minot medical center.
She was born September 22, 1912, in Girard Lake Township, rural Orrin, ND, the daughter of Frederick and Aasta (Skalet) Rauch. She was reared and educated in Orrin and graduated from Harvey High School. She attended Valley City State College and received her teaching certificate. She returned to Orrin, where she taught country school for a number of years.
She married Edward A. Haykel on June 4, 1937, in Rugby, ND. The couple lived in Berthold and Grafton before moving back to Orrin. In 1983, the couple began spending their winters in Apache Junction, AZ. Edward died on July 30, 1996. She then moved to Minot where she had since resided.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rugby. She was a former member of the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Rugby. She once held office in both organizations. She was also a member of the Orrin Homemakers Club.

Haykel and his wife, Beverly, Minot; grandchildren, Lisa Brown, Lynette Johnson, Lori Ahlstrand; great-grandchildren, Brianna, Alyssa and Candace Brown, Austin Johnson, Kirsten and Kylie Ahlstrand; and brother, Ralph Rauch, Columbus, OH. Eleanor "Elly" Huff - - 1959 - 2001
Eleanor "Elly" Huff, 42, 5204 4 St. SW, Minot, died Saturday, December 1, 2001, at her home after a long struggle with cancer.
Elly Gorseth was born May 23, 1959 to Ernest and Doris (Olson) Gorseth of Blaisdell, ND. She graduated from Stanley High School, continued her education at U.N.D.-Williston and graduated from Minot State University in 1981 with a degree in elementary education.
Elly's greatest love was her family. In 1979 she married Tom Huff Jr. and together they had three children: Grant, Madison and Mariah. Her beautiful children are a tribute to her patience, kindness and gentle sense of humor.
Elly devoted nearly two decades of her life to teaching children. Her career as an educator began in the Deering Public Schools. Elly then went to South Prairie School where she taught until last December. Elly had 17 years of time and love invested into South Prairie, where she taught many grades, worked as a reading specialist and sometimes filled in as principal.
For the past several years, Elly also worked for Books Are Fun. This job gave her great enjoyment because she loved books, talking to other teachers and traveling to many schools in northwest North Dakota.
Elly was a member of N.D.E.A., South Prairie P.T.O., North Dakota Reading Association and served on a number of committees at Prairie Federal Credit Union. Elly was an active member of Saron Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and belonged to the Ladies Church Group. Elly was known for the beautiful flowers in her yard and enjoyed meeting with her friends in "Garden Club".
She is survived by her husband Tom Jr. and her children, Grant, Madison and Mariah, all at home; her mother, Doris Kabanuk of Minot; her sister Noel (Mark) Nesheim of Palermo, ND; her brothers Algene (Linda) Gorseth of Bismarck, ND, Lyle (Gayle) Gorseth of Blaisdell, ND, Daniel (Brenda) Gorseth of Jasper, GA, and Steve (Karen) Gorseth of Monticello, MN. Her 18 nieces and nephews held a special place in her heart. She is also survived by her mother and father in law, Tom and Bonnie Huff of Minot, her sisters-in-law Tami (Steve) Towle of Bismarck, ND, Sandi (Scott) Renfandt of Minot, and Holly Jensen of Denver, CO; and her grandfather-in-law Chet Stroklund of Kenmare, ND. She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest, her stepfather Victor Kabanuk and her sister Corinne.

Marlys Ione Hussey, 70, 906 38th St. SE, Minot, died Wednesday, January 23, 2002, in a Minot medical center from complications with cancer.
She was born on October 19, 1931, in Ellendale, MN, the daughter of John P. and Esther L. (McFall) Sweet. She was raised and educated in Northfield, MN, and graduated from Northfield High School in 1949. She married LaVerne Hussey on December 24, 1950, in Northfield. She traveled with her husband, who was serving in the US Air Force. They lived and raised their family in Japan, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Newfoundland, Canada. In 1972, they retired in Minot. She was the former owner and operator of Jackie's Restaurant and Erna's Café, both in Minot, and the Hideout Lounge in Velva, ND. She also worked at Charlie's Café and the Holiday Inn, both of Minot. She spent the last 12 years assisting her daughter in the operation of Cathy's Café, formerly Jackie's Restaurant.

Viola E. Isakson - - 1928 - 2001
Viola E. Isakson, 72, 1325 27th St. SE 124, Minot, died Saturday, October 27, 2001 in a Minot medical center.
Viola was born November 23, 1928, in rural Upham, ND, the daughter of Wolfred and Edith (Beare) Wagar. She was reared and educated in Little Deep area. She worked and helped on her parent's farm and for neighbors in the Upham area. She met her future husband, Alfred Isakson, with the help of some mutual neighbors. They were married on April 5, 1947, in Fargo, ND. From the mid 1960's to 1972, Viola worked as a housekeeper at the Minot Air Force Base. The superior officers preferred her for her attention to detail and thoroughness in cleaning. She worked with Alfred in the farming and ranching operations, as well as raising her family. Viola enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, baking, cooking and especially spending time with her grandchildren. In 1995 they moved from Little Deep to Minot, where they have since resided. In the spring of 1997, Viola and Alfred celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
She was a member of the Little Deep Homemakers Club and the Community Church of Christ.

She was born April 7, 1952, in Stanley, to Stanislaw and Olga Zygmunt. She was reared and educated in Stanley and graduated from Stanley High School. She attended college in Wahpeton for a time. She married Wayne Halvorson and they had a son, Wade. They were later divorced. She later married Roger Johnson and they had a daughter, Christina and were later divorced.
Mary worked as a nurses aid for most of her life. She started in 1970's, spending a majority of her time working at nursing homes, working the last five years at Trinity Hospital, Minot. She also spent some time traveling, taking care of the elderly. She was also a licensed real estate agent.
Survivors: mother, Olga Zygmunt, Stanley; daughter, Christina Johnson, Minot; son and daughter-in-law, Wade Halvorson (Stephanie), Gainesville, TX; granddaughter, Gabrielle Halvorson and step-grandchildren, James and Deliah. She was preceded in death by her father.
