Lawrence J. Neigel, 67, Minot, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002, in a Minot hospital.
He was born 24 September, 1934, to Sebastian and Margaret Neigel and was raised on their homestead at Orrin, McHenry County, ND. He attended Rosebush Elementary School in McHenry County. As a child he helped with the family farm, working cattle and trapping small game for pelts. He then attended St. Leo's School in Minot and worked for room and board at St. Joseph's Hospital.
In October 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and received basic infantry training. After advanced training in demolitions and bridge building, he was assigned to cook school. He volunteered to serve in Korea and was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division Headquarters, Wurzburg, Germany, where he met and later married his wife, Heidi on December 3, 1955 in Erlangen, Germany.
In June of 1961, they were stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas and lived in Junction City, Kansas. On October 13, 1962, after years of waiting, he was blessed with the arrival of a daughter, Rene Dianne. During his twenty-year military career, he served at several bases in the US and Germany. He earned the rank of Sergeant First Class. . Among his proudest memories was that during his military combat service, his unit didn't lose a single man during their 13-month stay in Tay Ninh, Vietnam. He enjoyed a sales career with Prudential Insurance until a series of heart attacks forced his civilian retirement. He very much enjoyed woodworking and fishing during the twilight of his life, especially when it involved teaching others how to hook a crafty walleye. Among his most frequent angling students were his brothers, nephews, a few close friends and his three grandsons (and occasionally, even his wife). Whether fishing in his boat or on the ice, he was a prominent figure on North Dakota's lakes.
