Lois Ramsey Ogle
Died: 12 - 02 - 2006 Mrs. Lois Ramsey Ogle, age 67 of Hartford passed away Saturday, December 2, 2006 at her home. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J. Ogle; sons, Hal J. Ogle and J. Michael Ogle; grandson, Jason H. Edna Rose Baxter
Died: 12 - 01 - 2006 Mrs. Edna Rose Baxter, 69, of White Pine, went to be with her Lord Friday, December 1, 2006, at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. She was a homemaker by trade. Mrs. Baxter is preceded in death by her husband, William C. Baxter; parents, Wyman and Tillie Terri Gibson; two brothers, William and Herman Gibson; and one son, Roy D. Baxter. She is survived by her son, Rex and wife Lisa (Raqual) Baxter, of Newport; two sisters, Hazel Nelson, of Orman Beach, Fla., and Maude Bbupp, of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Delores T. Davis
Died: 11 - 30 - 2006 Delores T. Davis, age 52 of Sevierville went to be with the only one that loved her more than her husband, her Lord Jesus Christ, on Thursday, November 30, 2006. Delores had a pet sitting business and was happiest when caring for her animals, Abigail Rose, Casey, Gabriel, R.C., Dutch, Ebony, Jasmin, Riley, Max, Sunny, Mr. Wiggles, and Hailey. She was preceded in death by her mother Lillian Hardgrove. Mrs. Davis survivors include her husband, Eddie Davis, who was the former manager of the Newport Auto Zone for many years; daughters and son-in-law, April and Dale Fisher, and Heather Davis; father, Kenneth Townsend; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilma and Steve Matthews, Charlotte Taylor, Gail and Kelley Wise and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday December 3, 2006 in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Donnie Jester and Rev. Leroy Parton officiating. Charles Edmond Yates
Died: 11 - 30 - 2006 Mr. Charles Edmond Yates, age 77 of Del Rio, went to be with his Lord Thursday, November 30, 2006. He was a laborer by trade and a member of Round Mountain Baptist Church. Mr. Yates is preceded in death by his parents, Roby Taft and Ollie Bible Yates; one son, Charles Wayne Yates and two sisters, Bernice Stokely and Mae Ellen Evans. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ella Mae Stokely Yates of the home; four children, Danny Yates, Donnie Yates, Linda Arrowood and Delilah and husband Berry Shelton all of Del Rio. He is also survived by his two sisters, Edith Stokely and Janice Yates of Del Rio; four brothers, Eugene and wife Tennie Yates, Olen and wife Mary Yates, Sherrill and wife Micki Yates and Jerry Yates all of Del Rio; thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great - grandchidren. Died: 11 - 24 - 2006 Fred B. Barger, age 88 of Parrottsville went to be with his Lord peacefully Friday, November 24, at his home. He was a member of Dutch Bottoms Church. He was retired from Stokley Van Camp. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mattie Rhea Barger. Shirley Ann Ivey Abell
Died: 11 - 23 - 2006 Shirley Ann Ivey Abell, age 60 of Del Rio went to Heaven on Thursday, November 23, 2006 peacefully at home with her loving family by her side after a long battle with cancer. Shirley had a true and endless love for animals. She was born March 27, 1946 to David and Annie Ivey of Lumberton, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, David Ivey of Mulberry, Florida. Alvin Valentine
Died: 11 - 22 - 2006 Alvin Valentine, age 83 of Cosby went to be with his Lord Wednesday evening November, 22, 2006 following a lengthy illness. Alvin was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the United States Navy. Attended Rocky Grove Baptist Church and was retired from Emerson Electric. Before his illness Alvin liked to garden and always shared his crops with family and friends. He liked to make everyone laugh with his funny sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sallie (Ball) Valentine, three brothers, Carr, Lester and Warren Valentine; two sisters also preceded, Leona Valentine and Callie Mae Valentine; three brothers-in-law, Leroy, Harold, and Steward (Smiley) Shults; one brother and sister-in-law, Barbara Shults. Surviving Alvin, his loving wife of 53 years, Betty (Shults) Valentine; two sisters, Velma Lunsford of Cosby and Ola Epting of Kennedy, FL; one brother and sister-in-law, Artie and Faye Valentine of Sparks, NV; two brothers and sisters-in-law also survive, Ruth, Patricia, Nancy and Lillie Shults. Alfred (A.C.) Cleo O’Neil, age 64, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 31, 2007. He was a member of Swannsylvania Baptist Church and was an employee of Sonoco Paper Products for over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleo and Dell O’Neil. He is survived by his wife, Mistle Faith O’Neil; son, David O’Neil, of Strawberry Plains; and son and daughter-in-law, Alfred Wayne and Vanessa O’Neil, of Newport. He had two granddaughters, Courtney O’Neil, of Newport, and Sierra O’Neil, of Jefferson City; his sister, Dorothy Suggs, of Newport; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Judy O’Neil; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and J.D. He is survived by his mother, Jessica Beilly of Louisiana; father, Nicholas Malcom of Newport; surrogate family, Kandi Kelm (Mama #2), Kati Kelm (Sissy) both of Newport, and Kay Kelm (Nana) of Hartford; grandfathers, Darren Beilly of Louisiana, Charles E. Malcom and Edward M. McReynolds both of Florida; grandmothers, Cindy Rose McReynolds and Clarissa Malcom both of Florida; uncles, Christopher Beilly, Travis R. Perle Cody McNabb
Died: 01 - 29 - 2007
Perle Cody McNabb, age 93, formerly of Newport, passed away, Monday, January 29, 2007, in Sylva, North Carolina. She graduated from Central High School (later Cocke County High) in1929 as valedictorian. In 1933 she graduated from Milligan College, with a Bachelor of Science degree, the first woman to graduate summa cum laude from Milligan. She earned her Master’s Degree in Biology in 1938 from Duke University. She was a classroom teacher for twenty - nine years, mostly in the math and science fields, mostly at Cocke County High School and one year at Cosby. In 1964 Perle left her classroom at Cocke County High School to accept a position of Supervisor of Instruction for Cocke County, and remained in this position until her retirement in 1972. One of the accomplishments during her tenure of which she was most proud was helping establish Cocke County’s Adult Basic Education Program. In 1972 Perle was selected Newport’s First Lady, and in that year also she began her 1972 - 1973 term as President of the Tennessee Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development. She served on the Newport City School Board and was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society of women educators, and in the Cocke County Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost sixty –four years, H. Royce McNabb; parents, W.C. and Sytha Stuart Cody; grandson, Daniel Royce McNabb; sister, Daisy Cody; brothers, Paul, Donald, Hollis, Cephas and Darius Cody. She is survived by her son, Steve McNabb and wife Lindsay of Johnson City, TN; daughter, Donna Williams and husband, Don, of North Carolina; grandchildren, Lucas Cody McNabb and Meredith Allyson McNabb, of Johnson City; step grandchildren, Jason Williford and wife Jimejo, of Buffalo, NY, Hugh Williams and wife, Tami, of North Carolina; step great grandchildren, Justin Williford, of Newport, Mason and Chloe Williford, of Buffalo, NY, and Abigail, Callie and Ellie Williams, of North Carolina. Hugh David Fox, age 85, of Newport, passed away Monday, January 29, 2007, at his home. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy A. Fox; mother, Laura Fox; and granddaughter, Misty Ottinger. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Fox; daughters, Dorothy James and husband Henry, Georgia Grooms; sons, James (Buck) Fox and wife Judy, Charles Fox and wife Ethel, Clarence Fox and wife Eita, all of Newport; and Roy Fox, of Morristown; twenty - four grandchildren, twenty - five great - grandchildren, and fourteen great - great - grandchildren. Marie J. Owens
Died: 01 - 28 - 2007 Marie J. Owens, 92, died at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County January 28, 2007, after a short illness. She was born Marie Jones in the Del Rio section of Cocke County Oct. 16, 1914. A long time schoolteacher, she started her career in a small one - room school house not far from where she was born, later moving to Newport Grammar School where she remained until her marriage in 1947 to Audrey Owens, of Cosby. After her husband’s death in 1968, she returned to teaching and taught at both Hartford and Cosby Elementary before retiring in 1981. In addition to teaching, she also continued to operate the family farm until her death and was an active member of Cocke County Farm Bureau Women, and also served as the first female director of the Cocke County Farm Bureau. She was also active in the Cocke County Retired Teachers Association. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing her plants, especially Linton Roses, with her friends and family. She had a zest for life that continued until the time of her death. She is survived by her two children and their families: Susan Owens Mulligan, son-in-law, Keith Mulligan, and grandson, Kevin Mulligan, and his wife, Leann; Charles Owens, daughter-in-law, Sarah Owens, grandson, Aaron Owens, and granddaughter, Catherine Owens. Special loved ones included Kenny and Patty Stuart and their son, Tristan. The family wants to thank her care givers and especially Dr. Fady Tohme for the care, concern and love that they showed Marie over the last year of her life. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 30 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home. Gladys Louise Dockery
Died: 01 - 27 - 2007
Mrs. Gladys L. Dockery, 73, was born February 12, 1933, in Parrottsville, TN. She departed this life on January 27, 2007, at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. She attended Allen’s Chapel School, Tanner High School, and Swift Memorial College in Rogersville, TN, where she received a degree in teaching. She taught at Tanner High School and also schools in Sevierville and North Carolina. She was employed at Electro - Voice for 29 years, retiring in 1995. She was united in marriage to Burn H. Dockery on February 26, 1955. To this union, 8 children were born. Gladys was a loyal worker at Allen’s Chapel Baptist Church all her life, accepting Christ in her life at a young age. She served in the capacity of Sunday school teacher, Usher president, youth leader, homecoming committee, and was active in the Bethel District Association. She was also involved in the NAACP, The Tanner Committee, and served as membership chairperson of the Cocke County Democratic Women’s Club. Gladys was a huge fan of football. She loved and supported the Cocke County Fighting Cocks, the UT Volunteers, and the Tennessee Titans. Gladys’ hobbies included working in her flower garden, cooking, going to yard sales, watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and Deal or No Deal. She especially enjoyed raising her children, grandchildren, and great - grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents: Henry and Bervelee Carr, of Parrottsville, TN; husband of 26 years: Burn Harris Dockery Sr.; sisters: Francis Murphy, Laura Reese, Johnnie Lee Carr, Chasity Ann Carr; brother: Robert Clarence Carr; and friend: Jennie L. Olden. She leaves to mourn her loss, sons: Aaron (Staci) Dockery, Seymour, TN; Burn (Gina) Dockery Jr., Parrottsville, TN; Ricky Dockery and 1st Sgt. Paul H. (Stacey) Dockery, Knoxville, TN; daughters: E. Marketta Dockery, Newport, TN; Rementna (Ernest) Wright, Knoxville, TN; Tewanna V. Dockery, Newport, TN; and Shedenna A. Dockery, Newport, TN. Fifteen grandchildren: Mark Allen, Baron (Birdie) Dockery, Casey Dockery, Sonya Robinson, Taneka Dockery, Bradley Rogers, Jessica Dockery, La Toya Rogers, Jared Dockery, Brandon Dockery, Lyndsie Dockery, Demetrius Dockery, Bryson Dockery, Braxton Dockery, and Keishawn Dockery. Eight great - grandchildren: Dorian Dockery, Tyler Robinson, Jamarlon Gaston, Haylee Dockery, Takiyah Dockery, Sydney Dockery, Carlissa Dockery, and Rhianna Whitehorn. Special grandchildren: Jordan Carr, Bethany Stewart, Logan Blazer, Brandon Dockery (Seymour) Katie and Jessie Reneau. Sisters: Alzora (Charles) Rader, Knoxville, TN; Shirley (Arthur) Davis, Knoxville, TN; and brother: Charles Henry Carr, Morristown, TN. Brothers-in-law: Clay (Christine) Dockery, Newport, TN; Carl (Geraldine) Dockery, Dandridge, TN; Joseph (Vivian) Dockery, Newport, TN; Bobby (Shirley) Dockery, Detroit, Michigan; Arthur Dockery and Dwayne Dockery, Newport, TN; Sisters-in-law: Mary (Clyde) Myers, Pittsburgh, PA; Patricia Dockery, Newport, TN; Charlotte Woods, Knoxville, TN; and Theresa Dockery, Newport, TN. Special friends include her special sistrs, Mrs. Bessie Thomas, Sis Madalee Stewart, Sis Martha B. Gudger, Sis Nellie Dawson, and Sis Geraldine Hammonds. Very special long time friends, Barbara Allen, Ralph Rogers, Newport, TN; Ann Marshall, Kentucky; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, January 30, 2007, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Costner - Maloy Funeral Home. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 31, at 1:00 p.m. Allen’s Chapel Baptist Church, Parrottsville, TN. Interment will be at Faubian Cemetery. Rev. Carl Bragg officiating. J.R. and his wife, Rachel were the Glorybound Singers who had a broadcast on WJFC Radio station for two years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Maggie Phillips of Newport. He leaves his wife, Rachel Crowe Phillips of New Market; father, Alfred Phillips of Bybee; son and daughter-in-law, Scottie and Patricia Phillips; step - son and wife, Michael and Donna Crowe; step - daughter and husband, Stephanie and Fredy Reyes all of New Market; brothers and sisters-in-law, Buster and Carolyn Phillips of Morristown, Roy and Ann Phillips and Randy Phillips all of Newport; Michael and Wanda Phillips of Bybee; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bobbie Phillips, Betty and J.L. Sutton all of Newport, Wanda and Fred Lance and Jan Kirkpatrick of Morristown; grandchildren, Abbi and Haley Phillips, Jesse and Nicholas Reyes and Andrew Crowe; several nieces and nephews; aunt, Bewah Evans of Newport.
