Gene E. Gray, 71
DUNNELLON — Gene E. Gray, 71, a retired Florida marine patrolman, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Munroe Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Gray was a native of Cleveland. He was a member of the Masons and International Blue Knights. Mr. Gray served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Survivors include his mother, Luella Gray, West Palm Beach; sons, Gary E. Gray, Ocala, and John R. Gray, Key Largo; daughter, Shary L. Head, Inglis; brother, Floyd E. Gray Jr., West Palm Beach; sister, Diane Ruszat, Atlanta; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Barbara B. Hiers, 59
WILLISTON — Barbara Burnett Hiers, 59, a retired phlebotomist for Marion County Blood Bank, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, in Ocala.
A native of Chiefland, she moved here 40 years ago. Mrs. Hiers was a member of First United Methodist Church of Williston.
Survivors include her daughters, Jill Grice, Ocala, and Eva Shiver, Savannah, Ga.; sisters, Josie Crooms, Williston, and Thelma Dickenson, Orange Park; and four grandchildren.

Peter F. Inglese, 83
OCALA — Peter Frank Inglese, 83, a retired letter carrier, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Ocala Regional Medical Center.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he moved here from Merrick, N.Y. Mr. Inglese served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Inglese, Ocala; daughters, Michelle Prevete, Ocala, and Toni George, Oregon; son, Robert Inglese, Ocala; brother, Ralph Inglese, Arizona; and five grandchildren.

Arthur W. Klein, 69
DUNNELLON — Arthur W. Klein, 69, a retired bank manager, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in Crystal River.
A native of Queens, N.Y., he moved here from Long Island, N.Y., in 1994. Mr. Klein was a member of Friends of Rainbow Springs, American Legion Post No. 58, Radio Controlled Model Club; and a Rainbow Springs State Park volunteer. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Marylou Klein, Dunnellon; sons, William Klein and Raymond Klein, both of Long Island; daughters, Karen McGreevy, Mount Pleasant, S.C., Lynnann Klein, Old Hickory, Tenn., Barbara Zimmerman and Patricia Klein, both of Long Island; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Annabel D. Ross, 73
BELLEVIEW — Annabel Dane Ross, 73, a retired executive secretary, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in McKenzie, Tenn.
Mrs. Ross was a native of Stafford, Ohio. She was a member of the Belleview Church of Christ.
Survivors include her sons, Patrick Ross, McKenzie, and Michael Ross, Tavares; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd H. Ross on Jan. 19, 1988; and daughter, Judy A. Caughman.

Louise Shields, 70
OCALA — Louise Shields, 70, a retired maintenance worker, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001.
A native of Blackstone, Mass., she moved here from Palm Beach County in 1998. Mrs. Shields was Catholic.
Survivors include her husband, Francis "Mike" Shields, Ocala; son, Walter R. Goulet, Blackstone; brothers, Paul Lesperance, Cabot, Vt., Joseph Lesperance, Boynton Beach, Ovita Lesperance, Zephyrhills, Christopher Lesperance, Orange City, Louis Lesperance and Peter Lesperance, both of Blackstone; sisters, Anna Seifert, Delray Beach, and Mary Robinson, Blackstone; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

John M. Still, 41
INVERNESS — John M. Still, 41, a retired master sergeant for the U.S. Army, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001.
A native of Jacksonville, he moved here from Fort Campbell, Clarksville, Tenn. Mr. Still served in the Army during the Gulf War. He was Baptist.
Survivors include his sons, Michael Still and Zachary Still, both of Fort Bragg, N.C.; mother, Dora Still, Inverness; brother, Robert K. Still, Inverness; and sister, Cathy Rice, Tampa.

James W. Taylor, 55
TALLAHASSEE — James Weston Taylor, 55, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001.
Mr. Taylor was a native and lifelong resident of Tallahassee. Mr. Taylor was member of American Numismatic Association, life member of York Rite Bodies, Robert Butler Lodge No. 305, and past worthy patron of Order of the Eastern Star.
He is survived by his aunts, Dora Mae Waller and Frances T. MacKenzie, both of Ocala.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL, 32308.

Walter W. Bauman Jr., 77
CRYSTAL RIVER — Walter William Bauman Jr., 77, a retired insurance adjuster, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at home.
A native of New Haven, Conn., he moved here from Wallingford, Conn., 13 years ago. Mr. Bauman was a former member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Disabled American Veterans, and an alumnus of the University of Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Survivors include his son, Kurt M. Bauman, Southington, Conn.; daughter, Paige S. Bauman, Norwalk, Conn.; sister, Evelyn Higgins, Sarasota; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ester Bauman; and daughter, LuAnn Bauman.

Joseph A. Benson, 86
OCALA — Joseph A. Benson, 86, a certified public accountant, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Munroe Regional Medical Center.
A native of Shelton, Conn., he moved to Ocala in 1987 from Wallingford, Conn. Mr. Benson was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Angela Santos Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4781, American Legion, and Community Congregational Church of Marion Oaks.
Survivors include his wife, Vella Benson, Ocala; sons, Richard M. Benson, Palm Beach and Joseph M. Benson, North Haven, Conn.; stepson, James E. Gard, Middletown, Conn.; stepdaughters, Faye Musso of Meriden, Conn., and Mary Harnois, Wallingford, Conn.; sisters, Margaret Phelon, Arleta, Calif., Catherine Coinbra, Oregon, Ruth Lavalle, West Haven, Conn., Dorothy Christopher and Ethel Moore, both of Connecticut; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Benson.

Charlotte Boots, 85
CANDLER — Charlotte Boots, 85, a homemaker, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Estelle's Hospice House.
A native of Palatka, she was a longtime resident of Candler. Mrs. Boots was Presbyterian.
Survivors include her husband, John R. Boots Sr., Candler; daughter, Audrey E. Kitchens, Candler; son, John R. Boots Jr., Jacksonville; sisters, Julia Dulas, Sacramento, Calif., and Charlene Poole, Inverness; brother, Francis R. Mathews, Monticello; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Thomas R. Boulter, 85
OCALA — Thomas R. Boulter, 85, a retired truck driver, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Estelle's Hospice House.
A native of New York City, he moved to Ocala in 1999, from New Jersey. Mr. Boulter was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Teamsters Union Local No. 707, and past secretary of the Irish-American Teamsters Club.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel Boulter, Ocala; son, Thomas Boulter, Bayville, N.J.; sister, Florence Kearns, Manhattan, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Stan Burwell, 87
OCALA — Stan Burwell, 87, a retired engineer, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001.
A native of Saskatchewan, he moved here from Baltimore 15 years ago. Mr. Burwell was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a life member of Society of Manufacturing.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce N. Burwell, Ocala; daughter, Kathryn Melville, Garland, Texas; son, Dr. Ronald J. Burwell, Dillsburg, Pa.; and sisters, Cora Downie, Calgary, Alberta and Bernice McNeil, Didsbury, Alberta.

Jeanette R. Fretwell, 54
OCALA — Jeanette R. Fretwell, 54, a receiving manager for Kmart, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Munroe Regional Medical Center.
A native of Williston, she was a longtime resident of Marion County.
Survivors include her husband, Jim F. Fretwell, Ocala; daughter, Theresa Gladstone, Summerfield; sons, Billy Fretwell, Ocala and Alfred Gladstone, Summerfield; sisters, Geraldine Barringer, Zolfo Springs, Mildred Boyles, Citra, Betty Hunt, Summerfield, Beatrice Shrum and Janice Cobb, both of Ocala; brothers, Jimmy L. Harrison, Citra, Paul Harrison, Summerfield, Jess Harrison and John W. Harrison, both of Ocala, Walter Harrison and Frank H. Harrison Jr., both of Belleview; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Borden F. Parker, 62
BEVERLY HILLS — Borden "Bud" F. Parker, 62, retired, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001.
A native of Albany, N.Y., he moved here from Austin, Texas, in 2000. Mr. Parker retired as a first lieutenant from U.S. Army. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 10087, Beverly Hills; Beverly Hills Community Church; and past member of U.S. Postal Council.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Dianne M. Parker, Beverly Hills; sons, Jeffrey M. Parker, South Carolina and Scott R. Parker, Austin; daughters, Dawn M. Weber and Kelly R. Fisher, both of League City, Texas; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son, Frank E. Parker.

Billie N. Patterson, 86
INVERNESS — Billie N. Patterson, 86, a homemaker, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001.
Mrs. Patterson was a native and lifelong resident of Inverness. She was a member of Fort Cooper Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her nieces, Betty Dixon, Jacksonville and Barbara Burkhalter, Inverness; and nephew, Billy G. Young, Crystal River.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Patterson.

Martha L. Perry, 85
OCALA — Martha L. Perry, 85, a receptionist for Holiday Inn in Silver Springs, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001.
A native of Forsyth, Ga., she moved here from Georgia 72 years ago. Mrs. Perry was a member of Berean Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Marguerite Stafford, Ocala; brother, Clinton Reaves, Portsmouth, Va.; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Leonard M. Rickards, 73
OCALA — Leonard M. Rickards, 73, a retired oil man for Phillips Petroleum Co., died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in Ocala.
A native of Canton, N.C., he moved to Ocala in 1989, from Bartlesville, Okla. Mr. Rickards served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was past director of the American Petroleum Institute. Mr. Rickards was Methodist.
Survivors include his wife, Polly Rickards, Ocala; daughter, Lisa R. Box, Houston; son, Tim P. Rickards, Bartlesville; and six grandchildren.

A native of Geneva County, Ala., he moved here from California 24 years ago. Mr. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church, Ocala; Elks Lodge; and Third Florida Wildcats, Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Smith, Ocala; mother, Lizzie M. Smith, Graceville; son, Gregory Smith, Roswell, Ga.; sisters, Kimberly Smith, Roswell and Geraldine Bowen, Ashford, Ala.; brothers, James Smith, Ashford and Kenneth Smith, Dothan, Ala.; and three grandchildren.

DUNNELLON — John Stuart Swirko, 53, a machine operator for Closet Maid, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, in Gainesville.
A native of Miami, he moved here 16 years ago. Mr. Swirko was a member of American Legion Post No. 58, Dunnellon. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. Mr. Swirko was Catholic.
Survivors include his mother, Helen Swirko, Dunnellon; and sisters, Cindy Swirko, Gainesville and Joyce Brown, Crystal River.
