Mary Jackson Joyce
Mary Jackson Joyce, 79, of Steelsburg, died Oct. 29, 2005 at her home following a brief illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Elisha and Lou Carter McGlothlin.
She was a member of the VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell Co. Chapter 31 D.A.V.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dobber Jackson, and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors: husband, Raymond Joyce; daughters, Linda Butcher and husband, Samuel, of Beavercreek, OH, Elaina Underwood and husband, Danny G., of Richlands; son, Doug Jackson, Sr. of Richlands; sister, Marie Shelton of Pounding Mill; stepchildren, Roy Lee Joyce and Rick Joyce, both of Richlands, Mary Lynn Grizzel of Greensboro, NC, Phyllis Sword of Belfast; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; and many friends and neighbors.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 31 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. J.C. Johnson officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Ronald L. Keene
Ronald L. Keene, 58, of Bristol, VA, formerly of Richlands, died Oct. 25, 2005 in Arlington.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Betty Dixon Keene, of Richlands, and the late Leonard Paxton Keene.
He was a 1965 graduate of Richlands High School and was a former employee of Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation. He made his home in the Bristol, VA, area the past nine years and was a cell technician for Dana Corporation. He was a member of the Tennessee Ave. Baptist Church in Bristol, TN.
Additional survivors: wife, Donna Smith Keene; son, Zachary Steven Keene of the home; brother, Steve Keene and wife Terri of Murfreesboro, TN; sister, Donna Harman and husband, Robert, of Paintlick; mother-in-law, Ruby Jean Smith of Raven; brothers-in-law, Steve Smith and wife, Sharon, and Greg Smith and wife, Diane, all of Richlands; Gerald Smith and wife, Glena, of Kingsport, TN, Mike Smith and wife, Denise, of Swords Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Akard Funeral Home Chapel in Bristol, TN, Oct. 27 after 6 p.m. with the funeral service starting at 7 p.m. with Rev. Joe Hudson officiating. He was returned to the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands Oct. 28, where the family received friends after 5 p.m. Committal services were conducted Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tri-Cities Christian Schools, 1500 Hwy. 75, Blountville, TN 37617, Attn: Pat Yelton.

Ruby Mae Lawson
Ruby Mae Damron Lawson, 77, of Tazewell, formerly of Squire, WV, died Oct. 23, 2005 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.
Born July 7, 1928 at McDowell, KY, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Hattie Blankenship Damron. She attended the Dial Rock Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William V. Lawson; one son, Billie J. Lawson; one grandson, James “Jimbo” Conley; one son-in-law, Lawrence Scott; and three brothers, Edward Damron, Irvin Damron, and Ruford Damron.
She is lovingly remembered and loved by: daughters, Anna Sue Bowman of Squire, Dorothy “Dot” Syva and Joyce Hall, both of Tazewell, Brenda Lawson and Anita Scott, both of Roanoke; sons, James “Jimmy” Lawson and wife, Faye, of Danville, B. Keith “Kenny” Lawson of Tazewell; sisters, Ellen Lawson of McDowell, KY, Anna Ray Lawson of Martinsville; 18 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren; special nieces, Jewell Trail, Barbara White, Patty Wilson, Yvonne “Von” Kelly, Lisa Gann, Vickie Lawson and Margie Hall; nephew, Clinton “Skip” Lawson; and many other nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. John Canning and Charlie “Junior” Marrs officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

James Ralph Love
James Ralph Love, 67, of Richlands, died Oct. 27, 2005 at a Bland nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Bradshaw, WV, he was the son of the late Mylum and Fannie Maude Head Love, both Scott County natives.
He had made his home in the New York City area most of his life and was a former computer billing technician for Hecht’s Department Stores. He was a member of the Richlands High School Class of 1956 and was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Love, and one brother, Donald Love.
Survivors: sister, Carolyn Stoots and husband, Frank, of Cedar Bluff; nieces, Chrissy Ball and Lora Carty; nephews, Scott Ball, John Ball and Riley Stoots; two great nieces; and seven great nephews.
The family held a private burial service.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of arrangements.

Chester D. McClanahan
Chester Dewey McClanahan, 58, of Richlands, died Oct. 29, 2005 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Stuart McClanahan and Pauline Mitchell Woosley.
He had made his home in the Richlands area most of his life and was a retired foreman for Jewell Ridge #12 of the Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation. He was a District Royal Rangers Commander and a member of the Raven Assembly of God Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Kathleen Owens McClanahan.
Survivors: sons, William McClanahan and wife, Shirley, and Michael McClanahan and wife, Serena, all of Clarks Valley; father, Hassel Woosley, Sr. of Richmond; sisters, Martha Elder and Paula Walls, both of Richmond; brothers, Okey McClanahan, Sr. of Lebanon, Hassel Woosley, Jr. of Richmond; and grandchildren, William Adam McClanahan, Jason Aaron McClanahan, and Zachary Jake McClanahan.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 1 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Barry Absher officiating.
Interment followed at the Owens Family Cemetery on Daw Road near Richlands.

Maude Fleshman Smith
Maude Fleshman Smith, 98, of Pounding Mill, went to be with the Lord Oct. 24, 2005, after declining health for several years.
She was born April 11, 1907 in Bluefield, VA, to the late James W. and Myrtle Wallace Fleshman.
She was a graduate of Graham High School and Radford University in 1965. She started her teaching career in a one-room school at Smith Ridge, taught at Trinity House and ended her teaching career at Richlands Elementary with over 40 years of service. She was loved by many of her students. She was a member of Richlands Church of God.
She was the widow of Claude Smith.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard, Roy and Ted Fleshman; two sisters, Mildred Dale Pearson and Vera Blackwell; and one grandson, Dewayne Smith.
Survivors: daughter, Sandra Verbridge and husband, Ronald, of Conyers, GA; son, Ronald C. Smith of Rt. 1 Pounding Mill; sisters, Wilma Bowers and husband, Jim, and Edna Fleshman, all of Mullins, WV; grandson, Jeremy Christopher Smith; granddaughter, Donna Marie Smith; several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Corene Angles, Sandy Johnson, Total Home Care; and niece, Billie Anne Trent.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Monte Elswick officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Martha Jane Surface
Martha Jane Monk Surface, 57, of North Tazewell, died Oct. 27, 2005 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.
Born Dec. 1, 1947 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of Yvonne Davis Monk of North Tazewell and the late Kermitt C. Monk.
She was a graduate of Tazewell High School and attended East Tennessee State University. She was employed by Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands and Tazewell Community Hospital, Tazewell.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lafayette and Pansy Brewster Monk and Claude and Arra Catherine Brooks Davis.

Sissie Juanita Tackett, 62, of Dismal, died Oct. 31, 2005.

Betty Divor Tibbs
Betty Divor Tibbs, 73, of Bluefield, VA, died Oct. 24, 2005 in a Richmond hospital.
Born in Bluefield, VA, she was a daughter of the late Edward and J’Nan Devor.
She was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church and a member of RSVP.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Edward Tibbs, Sr. and several brothers and sisters.

Ronald Vernon Wright
Ronald Vernon Wright, 57, of the Dry Fork community of North Tazewell, died Oct. 30, 2005 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Born Nov. 15, 1947, he was a son of the late Kelly F. and Mary Hall Wright.
He enjoyed restoring vintage cars and playing horseshoes. He dearly loved his grandson, Nicolas Wright. He enjoyed the company of his long time companion Heidi, his dog.

Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. Nov. 2 at the funeral home.

John Thomas Ziats, Jr.
John Thomas Ziats, Jr., 53 of North Tazewell died Oct. 25, 2005 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.
Born April 21, 1952 in Elkton, MD, he was the son of John Thomas Ziats, Sr. of North Tazewell and the late Mary Jones Ziats.
Additional survivors: fiancée, Kathy Matney of North Tazewell; son, Thomas Matthew Ziats of Bland; and uncle, Frank Ziats of Bobtown, PA.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Woodrow Shelton officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.

Dale Edwin Altizer

Dale Edwin Altizer, 56, of Belfast, died Nov. 6, 2005 in James H. Quillen Veterans Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 26, 1949, he was the son of Emory and Lila Altizer of Belfast.

A decorated United States Marine, he proudly served his country in the Vietnam Conflict.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Darrell Altizer; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Altizer and Mr. and Mrs. Gus French.

Additional survivors: wife, Rose Altizer; daughter and son-in-law, Brooke and Tommy Holmes of Bristol; sons, Blake Altizer and Brett Altizer of Kingsland, GA; granddaughter, Natilie Pierantonis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Danny and Abby Altizer of Belfast, Doug and Linda Altizer of Hoover, AL, Phyllis Altizer of Paint Lick; sisters and brother-in-law, Dana and Carson Moats of Richlands, Diane Stevenson of Belfast; several aunts and uncles, cousins and special nieces and nephews; special friend, Samuel (Kilroy) Cheetum; and a host of other friends.

Graveside services will be conducted Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands with Rev. Ralph Horton and Rev. Danny Altizer officiating.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Veterans Honor Guard Association, Inc.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery mausoleum.

The family received friends Nov. 8 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Belfast Full Gospel Fellowship Church in Belfast.

Singleton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Iva Heneger Beach

Iva Heneger Beach, 63, of Hopewell, died Nov. 2, 2005 in the John Randolph Medical Center.

She was employed at the John Randolph Medical Center as an LPN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Mabel Heneger; her husband, Leonard Beach; and two sons, Darrin and David Beach.

Survivors: sons, Thomas and Dwayne Beach; daughters, Dorothy “D.D.” Beach and Deborah Bruner; grandchildren, Tina Beach, Claire Levenson, Daniel, Molly and Tessa Beach, Fawn Showalter, Alex Pully, Rachel Woods and Arynn Beach; and brother, James Heneger.

The family received friends Nov. 7 from 7-9 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home – Gould Chapel.

Services and interment were private.

Zeak Cain

Zeak Cain, 81, of Richmond, formerly of Tazewell, died Nov. 7, 2005 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond.

He will be sadly missed by family and friends. Born Dec. 20, 1923 in Derby, he was a son of the late Walter E. Cain and Helen Dills Cain.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Coast Guard and was a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell. He was a maintenance supervisor with H.C. Cockrell Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Peery Cain; one sister, Juanita Robinson; five brothers, Harry, Ernest, Clarence, Carson, and Junior Cain.

Survivors: wife, Evelyn Cain; daughters, Beverly Cain Atkinson and husband, Jim, Mary Cain Childress and husband, Johnny, and Melissa Cain Dotson, all of Chester; step son, Billy Yates and wife, Sandra, of Gwynn’s Island; sisters-in-law, Wanda Evans and husband, Jim, and Macie McAlexander and husband, Ralph; brothers-in-law, Paul Peery and wife, Wanda, Marshall Peery and wife, Alma, and Jim Peery and wife, Lois; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and special friend, Margaret Pemberton.

The funeral will be conducted Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Michael Stump officiating.

Burial will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Arch Cox

Arch Cox, of Lebanon, 90, went home to be with the Lord Nov. 7, 2005.

Born May 27, 1915, he was a son of the late John Cox and the late Sarah Fletcher Cox.

He was employed at the Russell County Court House from 1962 until 1997. He was a member of the East Lebanon Freewill Baptist Church and he loved to sing with the Mountain Memory Quartet for 50 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ed Cox; one grandson, Christopher Musick; four brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors: wife of 41 years, Loraine Strouth Dye Cox; his first wife, Eula Gay Cox, of Cedar Bluff; children, Helen and Joe Cole and Ruth Ann Dye, all of Bristol, Roy and Sue Dye and Howard and Tiny Dye, all of Lebanon, Junior Dye, of Fredricksburg; daughter-in-law, Willie Mae Cox, of Cedar Bluff; brother, John Henry Cox, of Lebanon; 14 grandchildren; several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

The funeral will be conducted Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Larry Robinson and the Rev. Roger Phillips officiating.

Burial will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens.

Gertie V. Davis

Gertie Victoria Osborne Davis, 79, of Tazewell, died Oct. 31, 2005 in a Tazewell hospital.

Born July 27, 1926 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late James Lewis and Rosa Louise Osborne.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Davis, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors: daughter, Madie Arnold and husband, James H., of Cliffield; son, Jimmy Davis of Roanoke; step daughter, Hattie Davis of Richlands; brothers, Curley Osborne of Valdese, NC, Burley Osborne of Chilhowie; grandsons, Steven Davis, Roger Davis and Christopher Arnold; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Ralph Horton officiating.

Graveside services were conducted Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. in the Osborne Family Cemetery at Osborne Mountain.

Eva Mae Dickens

Eva Mae Dickens, 75, of North Tazewell, died Oct. 29, 2005 at her home.

Born July 21, 1930 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Elmore and Georgia Campbell Thompson.

She was a member of Midway Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, in Tazewell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Annlaura Thompson, and one brother, Elmore Thompson, Jr.

Survivors: sisters, Ruth Smith, Alice Smith and husband, Beverly, and Ruth Mitchell, all of Tazewell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Browning officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.

Troy Clinton Hagy

Troy Clinton Hagy, 71, went to be with the Lord Nov. 1, 2005 at the Wake Forest Baptist Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 4, 1934, he was one of twin boys born to Walter C. and Mae Lowe Hagy.

Loved and adored by all that knew him, he was a resident of Tazewell, where he resided with his wife of 47 years, Pearl Mae Sarver Hagy. During his amazing life here on earth he served the United States Army and dedicated his life work to the Forestry Industry. He will ever be remembered by his family and friends as an avid sportsman, outdoor enthusiast, blue grass music fan, and a true inspiration to his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Walter C. and Mae Lowe Hagy; stepmother Fannie Hagy; two sisters, Lola Vance and Rita Hagy; three brothers, his twin Roy, Luther and Roger Hagy, and one infant son, Greg Hagy.

Survivors: wife, Pearl Mae Sarver Hagy; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Hagy and wife, Carol, of Bland, Anthony Hagy and wife, Lisa, of Tazewell; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam Richardson and husband, Howard “Buddy”, Robin Boothe and husband, Joe, and Sherry Stone, all of Tazewell. He has the ten best grandchildren in his eyes that he loved and adored as well as they do him. Amy and husband, Colin Boley, Leisa and husband, Anthony Richmond, Clinton Hagy and fiancée, Jenny Lambert, Kristin Richardson, Cody Gillespie, Courtnie, and Caitlin Hagy, Samantha and Josh Boothe, and Ashley Stone. There are four very special great grandchildren, Noah Richardson-Boley, Casidhe Boley, Christian Richmond, and Gracie Richmond. Honorary grandchildren that he loved as much as his own, Mandy, Ira, and Lakey Felty; Ronnie and Amanda Massie. Brothers, Rob Hagy and wife, Fern, of Doran, Raymond Hagy and wife, Mary Ann, of Bastian, Junior Hagy of Rocky Gap; sisters, Betty Morehead and husband, David, of Rocky Gap, Shirley Clemons and husband, Roger, of Rocky Gap, and Josie Angles of Brenton, WV.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 4 at noon at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Rev. Barry Absher officiating.

Interment followed at Bland Cemetery in Bland.

Charlie W. Hankins

Charlie W. Hankins, 80, of Baptist Valley Road, North Tazewell, died Nov. 3, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born Nov. 2, 1925 at Yukon, WV, he was a son of the late Joseph and Sarah Brooks Hankins.

He was a member of the Adria Advent Christian Church. He was a US Army veteran of World War, II serving in the 8th Calvary. He was a recipient of three Bronze Stars and a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell and the American Legion. He was a retired coal miner from Consolidation Coal Company at Bishop, with 37 years of service and a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie Mae Lambert Hankins; one daughter, Addie Louise Hankins; one sister, Shirley Bishop; and three brothers, Joe Hankins, Otis Hankins, and Jimmy Hankins.

Survivors: son, C.W. The funeral was conducted Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Don Elswick officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

William H. Hicks

William H. Hicks, 57, of State Farm, formerly of Amonate, died Oct. 30, 2005 in State Farm, following a brief illness.

Born in Virginia, he was the son of the late John Harrison and Myrtle White Hicks, both Tazewell County natives.

He had made his home in the Amonate area most of his life and was a former coal miner for W. A. Mining in Gary, WV.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, David Lee Hicks and Jimmy Hicks.

Survivors: wife, Carol Horn Hicks; daughters, Myrtle Horn, Tina Kelly and Jessica Harmon, all of Yukon, WV; sons, William Lester of Dry Fork, John Hicks of Amonate; step son, Joe Hankins of Amonate; sisters, Lucille Richards of Lexington, NC, Mary Jane Lowe of Bishop, Rosalie Atwell of Berwind, WV, Juanita Payne of Baptist Valley, Lorene Hagerman of Adria, Brenda Gray of South Carolina; brothers, Darrell Hicks of Lexington, NC, Frankie Hicks of Amonate, Johnny Hicks of Benson, NC; nine grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at his home in Amonate with the Rev. Melvin Muncy officiating.

Interment followed at the Hicks Family Cemetery near Bandy.

Arthur “Zeke” Hollett

Arthur W. C. “Zeke” Hollett, 66, of Tazewell, died Nov. 4, 2005 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born at St. John’s, Newfoundland, he was a son of William Hollett of St. John’s Newfoundland and the late Catherine Hogan Hollett.

He had made his home in Alexandria for most of his life. He was a butcher for McGruder’s. He was a member of the American Legion Post 24, Eagles Club in Alexandria and was a veteran of the U. S. Army.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Lee Day Hollett, and one sister, Jean Anthony.

Survivors: father and step-mother, William Hollett and Lily of St. John’s, Newfoundland; daughter, Kristina Hollett of Germantown, MD; sisters, Harlean Gudgeon of Tazewell, Joy Barrett of Labrador, Newfoundland; brothers, Bob Hollett of Goulds, Newfoundland, David Hollett of Happy Valley, Labrador, Newfoundland; grandchildren, Christopher and David; special caring niece, Cathy Simmons, and numerous other nieces and nephews; and special friend and brother-in-law, Ray Day.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Rev. Robert Buckles officiating.

Interment followed at Day-Lambert Cemetery at Pea Patch.

David W. Holmes

Donald W. Holmes, 42, of Raven, died Nov. 3, 2005 in a Lebanon hospital following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Oct. 5, 1963 in Baltimore, MD, he was a son of Preston and Nancy Louise Arnold Holmes of Paintlick.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, John Washington Holmes and Jack Keen, and his grandmother, Helen Keen.

Additional survivors: wife, Shirley Ann Holmes; brothers, David Wayne Holmes and wife, Tammy, of Brunswick, OH, Ronald Preston Holmes and wife, Amanda Sue, of Paintlick; sister, Loretta Lynn Holmes of Brunswick; niece, Mya Renee Holmes of Paintlick; nephews, Andrew Holmes and Cody Holmes of Brunswick; paternal grandmother, Beatrice Holmes of Paintlick; and maternal grandmother, Teresa Keen of Jewell Ridge.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Bobby Stanley and Mr. Ervin Justus officiating.

Burial was private.

John Earl Hubbard

John Earl Hubbard, 35, of Honaker, died Oct. 20, 2005 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born May 10, 1970 in Bluefield, VA, he was a son of Mary Bise Hubbard of Meadowview and the late Buford Hubbard.

Additional survivors: wife, Carol Justice Hubbard; daughter, Donna Justice of North Carolina; sons, John Michael Hubbard of Virginia, Kenneth Wayne Hubbard of North Carolina; sisters, Melissa Hubbard of Honaker, Nancy Price of Graham, NC, Betty Hubbard of Bristol, VA; and brother, James Hubbard of Meadowview.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Clyde Rose officiating.

Interment followed in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain.

Katherine H. Kersey

Katherine H. Kersey, of Bluefield, VA, died Oct. 28, 2005 at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Theodore and Theresa Hofstetter and was a graduate of Concord College.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank N. Kersey, Sr., four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors: son, Frank Kersey, Jr. and wife, Connie, of Bluefield, VA; daughters, Martha Kersey Jessee and husband, Steve, of Richlands, Kathy Kersey Feuchtenberger and husband, Greg, of Christiansburg; grandchildren, David Jessee, Matthew Jessee and Kate Feuchtenberger; brother, Carl Hofstetter of Newnan, GA; and niece, Doris Ann Spangler Walton of Newnan.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Ray Amos officiating.

Entombment followed in the Grandview Mausoleum Chapel on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road in Bluefield, VA.

Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the Bluefield Virginia Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 170, Bluefield, VA 24605.

Ramona Gail Lowe

Ramona Gail Lowe, 52, of Richlands, died Nov. 4, 2005 in a Richlands hospital.

Born in Welch, WV, she was a daughter of the late Curtis and Lydia Lester Lankford, Sr., both Richlands natives.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She had made her home in the Richlands area most of her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Jamie Wayne Lowe; one step-son, James William Lowe; two sisters, Sylvia Gilbert and Connie Lankford; and one brother, Tommy Lankford.

Survivors: daughters, Lisa Louise Hess of Cedar Bluff, Crystal Gail Neal of Richlands; son, Curtis Eugene Lowe of North Carolina; step-daughters, Janet Sue Lester and Tina Marie Short, both of Richlands; step-sons, William Stuart Lowe, Jr. of Belfast, Tommy Wayne Lowe of Richlands; sisters, Linda Hurd of Claypool Hill, Dorothy Ausgton of Galveston, TX, Janet Cole of Tazewell; brothers, Curtis Lankford, Jr. of Raven, Jerry Wayne Lankford, Michael Lankford and Billy Lankford, all of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Troy Lester and the Rev. Grady McGlothlin officiating.

Interment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.

John Edward Moore

John Edward Moore, 41, of Richlands, died Nov. 5, 2005.

Born April 14, 1964 in Bluefield, WV, he was the son of Orvil V. and Cosby Hennigar Moore of West End, NC.

He was a 1982 graduate of Pinecreast High School in Pinehurst, NC.

Additional survivors: wife, Valerie Cox Moore; sons, Noah Alexander Moore and James Rages Moore, both of the home; sister, Victoria Lynn Moore of West End; nephews, Scott Moore and Michael Moore; and mother-in-law, Vivian Stiltner of Richlands.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at the home.

Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth (Betty) Kyle Barnett Phillips

Elizabeth (Betty) Kyle Barnett Phillips, 77, of Okeechobee, FL, died Oct. 31, 2005 in a Tampa, FL hospital following a brief illness.

Born April 30, 1928 in Jewell Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Bert and Flora Barnett of Jewell Ridge.

She had made her home in Florida for more than 40 years.

She graduated from Richlands High School and earned her Registered Nursing certification from St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, WV. She was employed at Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital in Richlands for several years before serving her country as a Second Lt. in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors: husband, Everett C. Phillips; sons, Patrick Phillips and wife, Amy, of Laughlin, NV, Steve Phillips and wife, Maritza, of Tampa; brother, Samuel Walter Barnett and wife, Hula, of Cedar Bluff; and grandchildren, Samantha and Benjamin Phillips of Tampa.

The funeral was held in Tampa.

Gladys Lyons Rife

Gladys Lyons Rife, 81, formerly of the Big Creek Road section of Richlands, died Nov. 5, 2005 at a Jefferson City, TN hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Newbern, she was a daughter of the late Bascom and Dillie Cressell Lyons, both natives of Newbern.

Before moving to Tennessee, she had been a resident of the Richlands area for 35 years, where she had attended the Richlands Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Rife; two sisters, Nannie Whitt and Betty Chapman; and three brothers, Lee, Malcolm and Buddy Lyons.

Survivors: daughter, Bonnie Hackney and husband, Ronald, of Pensacola, FL; sons, Rev. Phillip Rife and wife, Patricia, of Elkhorne City, KY, Leslie Rife and wife, Nancy, of Newport, TN, Allen Rife of Richlands; sisters, Martha Kinder of Jewell Ridge, Juanita Davis of Old Fort, NC, Judy Dujardin of Shelby, NC; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Monte Elswick officiating.

Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Richlands Church of God Building Fund, 405 Jones Chapel Road, Richlands, VA 24641.

Randy Joe Rife

Randy Joe Rife, 44, of Jewell Ridge, died Nov. 4, 2005 at his home following a brief illness.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of Rosa Rife Ledbetter of Jewell Ridge and the late George H. Riffe.

He was a self-employed carpenter and was of the Pentecostal Faith. He had lived in the Jewell Ridge area most of his life.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Geisha Rife.

Survivors: son, Mack Allen Church of Bristol, TN; companion, Ella Mae Webb Baker; sister, Andrea Rife Chambers and husband, Jerry, of Jewell Ridge; brothers, Keith Rife and wife, Christine, Thearl Rife, Michael Rife, Kevin Rife, and Jamie Rife, all of Jewell Ridge; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and many friends.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Community Holiness Shiloh Temple Church at Pea Patch with the Rev. Billy Ward and Rev. McGinnis Rife officiating.

Interment followed in the Rife Family Cemetery in Pea Patch near Jewell Ridge.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Sissie Juanita Tackett

Sissie Juanita Tackett, 62, of Rt. 638 Dismal, died Oct. 31, 2005 at her home.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Ida Mae Matney Vandyke.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Arvil Robert Hagerman; three brothers, Earl Vandyke, Cleve Vandyke and Virgil Vandyke; and three sisters, Oakie Keen, Edna Taylor and Mary Whitt.

Survivors: daughters, Mrs. Kent (Teresa) Keen of Dismal Rt., Mrs. Tobby (Melissa) Deel of Spartanburg, SC, Mrs. Kristopher (Ida) Yates of Roanoke; very, very special grandson, Adam Carlos Robert Keen; very special brother, William Vandyke of Dismal Rt.; brothers, Junior Vandyke of South Carolina, Zeke Vandyke of Tazewell; sisters, Laura Vandyke of Contrary, Polly Lester of Big Rock, Shelvy Justice of Keen Mountain, Hanna Vandyke of Patterson; and very special nieces, Rhonda Vandyke, Virgie Meadows, and Kimberly Meadows.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Paul Rife officiating.

Burial followed in the Esaw Rife Cemetery at Keen Mountain.

A service was held Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
