Alice I. Tharaldson
Sept. 20, 1907 - Jan. 14, 2001
STARBUCK -- Alice Irene Tharaldson, 93, of Starbuck, died Sunday at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at East Zion Lutheran Church in rural Starbuck with the Rev. John Malm officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Sept. 20, 1907, in Rolling Forks Township, Pope County, to Andrew and Sarah (Mikklebust) Olson. She attended Rolling Forks Township schools.
On Jan. 12, 1927, she married Ole Tharaldson. They lived in Langhei Township, moving to Kandiyohi County March 1, 1940. They retired to Starbuck in the late 1970s. Ole died in 1987. She moved to Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck in 1991.
She was a member of Ladies Aid and Mothers Club.
She is survived by her daughters Marjorie (and Bob) Olson of Mora, Jean (and Hy) Gates of Benton, Ark., Irene (and Ken) Kowitz of Clearwater, Vicky (and Jay) Hegman of Taylors Falls; sons Omer Tharaldson of Willmar, Ernie (and Kathi) Tharaldson of Graceville, Harbee (and Sandy) Tharaldson of Farmington, Lynn (and Rosie) Tharaldson of Lakeville, Delan Tharaldson of Eagan, Donovan Tharaldson of New London, Lon (and Ruth) Tharaldson of Belle Plain; 37 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister Mabel Erickson of Starbuck and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, four grandchildren and daughter-in-law June Tharaldson.

Evelyn (Deike) Mikkelson
April 22, 1914 - Jan. 15, 2001
MANKATO -- Evelyn (Deike) Mikkelson, 86, of Mankato, formerly of Willmar, died Monday at Mankato Lutheran Home,
Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Mankato with the Rev. Jon Hill officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Memorials to Evelyn Mikkelson & Wanda Deike Bethany College Lutheran College Scholarship Fund or American Cancer Society are preferred.
Visitation will be two hours prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Landkamer Johnson-Boman Funeral Home in Mankato (507-345-4574).
She was born April 22, 1914, in Mankato to August and Wanda (Schier) Deike Jr. She was a 1932 graduate of Mankato High School, a 1937 graduate of Mankato Teachers College with a degree in English and history, and earned a master's degree in library science from University of Minnesota.
On Dec. 30, 1967, she married Mike Mikkelson in Mankato. She was employed as a librarian by Willmar Senior High School until retirement in 1983.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mankato and First Presbyterian Church in Willmar, member and past president of Kandiyohi County Historical Society and member of Blue Earth County Historical Society. She was active in Girl Scouts more than 50 years and a member of Lady Slipper Doll Club of Minnesota.
She is survived by her nephews James (and Chris) Deike of Madison Lake, Tom (and Denise) Deike of Mankato and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.

James L. Hadley
Nov. 27, 1948 - Jan. 16, 2001
ATWATER -- James L. Hadley, 52, of Atwater died Tuesday at the Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
His memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater with the Rev. Daniel Carlson officiating.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Atwater Funeral Home in Atwater and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Nov. 27, 1948, in Altmore, Ala., to Norma (Sando-Hadley) Bergstrom. He graduated from Eagle Bend High School and attended technical school in Wadena. He lived in Minneapolis.
On May 2, 1970, he married Patti Leaf in Minneapolis. In October 1979, they moved to Atwater where he owned and operated the Atwater Inn for 21 years.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and former member of Atwater Jaycees, Lions and Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife; son Gregory Hadley of St. Cloud; daughter Shelly Hadley of St Cloud; one grandson; his mother; three stepbrothers; one stepsister and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father Carl Bergstrom, grandparents and two stepbrothers.

Mae Ann Waldner
May 28, 1931 - Jan. 15, 2001
LINO LAKES -- Mae Ann Waldner, 69, of Lino Lakes, formerly of Hector, died Monday at her daughter's home in Lino Lakes.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hector. Burial will be in Hector City Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Hughes Funeral Home in Hector.
She was born May 28, 1931, in Gibbon to Julius and Anne (Berger) Lenz.
She married Gene Waldner. She was employed by various community businesses and was owner of Mazy's Café in Gibbon several years. She lived in Hector, but for the past nine months lived with her daughter in Lino Lakes.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hector.
She is survived by her children Scott (and Gail) Waldner of New Ulm, Becky (and Jerry) Lingl of Forest Lake, Wendy Waldner of Lino Lakes; three grandchildren; brother Swede (and Carmie) Lenz of California; sisters Gracie Patton of Colorado, Arlene (and Ben) Chastain of California and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, ex-husband, several siblings and one grandson.

Steven L. Dowdell
Nov. 20, 1952 - Jan. 13, 2001
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Steven Lloyd Dowdell, 48, of Asheville, N.C., formerly of Willmar, died Saturday at his home following an extended illness.
His memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Willmar. Cards may be sent to 23 Clement Place, Asheville, N.C. 28805.
Arrangements are with Penland & Sons Funeral Home in Swannanoa, N.C. (828-686-5447).
He was born Nov. 20, 1952, in Sauk Centre to Darrell and Thelma Dowdell. He lived in Willmar where he was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad for 20 years. He and his family moved to North Carolina in 1995.
He is survived by his wife Ann Opsahl Dowdell; daughter Katie Dowdell of Blacksburg, Va.; sons Shawn Dowdell of Blacksburg, Kristopher Dowdell of Asheville; sisters Patricia Weets of Pipestone, Amy VanGilder of Lino Lakes; brother William Dowdell of Willmar and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joyce M. Hanson
Sept. 14, 1940 - Jan. 17, 2001
SPICER -- Joyce Marie Hanson, 60, of Spicer died Wednesday at St. Cloud Hospital where for the past month she has struggled with an AV malfunction in her brain.
Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hawick United Methodist Church in Hawick with the Rev. Ruth Lovejoy officiating. Burial will be in Roseville Cemetery in Hawick.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home in New London and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Sept. 14, 1940, in Hawick to Harper and Hortense (Cunningham) Shreffler. She was a 1958 graduate of New London-Spicer High School.
On Oct. 24, 1959, she married Larry Hanson in Hawick. They lived in Hawick and New London. They later divorced, and she lived near Spicer the past 30 years. She was employed as a cook by Willmar Regional Treatment Center the past 15 years. She also operated a ceramic shop out of her home the past 15 years.
She was a member of Hawick United Methodist Church, active in Christian Women, Spicer American Legion Auxiliary, serving as past president, Willmar VFW Auxiliary and AFSME Union.
She is survived by her daughter Dori Korsmo of Clara City; sons Larry "Butch" (and Dodi) of Litchfield, Rick of Spicer; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brother Lawrence (and Delores) Shreffler of Hawick and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Lori Hegstrom, one granddaughter, one brother and one sister.

Harold H. Augeson
March 24, 1920 - Jan. 16, 2001
HECTOR -- Harold Hollis Augeson, 80, of Hector died Tuesday at Hutchinson Area Health Care.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hector. Burial will be in Hector City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hughes Funeral Home in Hector and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born March 24, 1920, near Montevideo, Chippewa County, to Sigfred and Alice (Sunderland) Augeson. He attended Montevideo area district schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the CCCs.
On Feb. 4, 1947, he married Florence Ruschmeyer in Buffalo Lake. They farmed outside of Hector, and he also trucked livestock for Chester Swain, retiring in 1982.
He is survived by his wife; children Gary (and Jill) Augeson of Litchfield, Jerry (and Connie) Augeson of Golden Valley, Randy (and Shelly) Augeson of Hector, Susan (and Keith) Wheeler of Fort Mill, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers Walter (and Ida) Augeson of Montevideo, Warren Augeson of Hector; sisters Opal Birhanzl of Montevideo, Cleo (and Don) Myhre of Montevideo, Violet Haff of Montevideo, Virginia (and Amer) Boraas of Dawson and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughters Pamela and Karen, two brothers and four sisters.

Gordon D. Johnson
May 28, 1934 - Jan. 18, 2001
WILLMAR -- Gordon DeVere Johnson, 66, of Willmar died Thursday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar following a lingering illness.
His funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. Graveside services will be at about 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Virgil City Cemetery in Virgil, S.D.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred.
He was born May 28, 1934, at Fremont, Neb., to Gordon and Audrey (Jones) Johnson. He grew up in DeSmet, S.D., and attended schools there. He engaged in farm work and later worked on the railroad, before moving to Wisconsin to work in various factory jobs. He returned to South Dakota and worked as a carpenter and farm laborer.
On Oct. 24, 1960, he married Mary Coil at Huron, S.D. In October 1967, they moved to Willmar where he was employed in construction, by Jennie-O Food Co. and Willmar Manufacturing. He became disabled and retired in 1990.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Laura Jean Johnson of Nashville, N.C.; stepson Frank Johnson of Green Bay, Wis.; stepdaughter Marie (and Tim) Bond of Brookings, S.D.; one grandson; brothers Roger (and Dorothy) Johnson of Cokato, Deone Johnson of Willmar; sisters Wyone Blanchard of Solomon, Kan., Yvonne Norris of Dallas, Texas, Cheyenne (and Frank) Scheidlag of Gettysburg, S.D., Lucinda Layton of San Diego, Calif., and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son in infancy and stepson Randy Geraw.

Orpha E. Washechek
Feb. 2, 1908 - Jan. 17, 2001
BUFFALO LAKE -- Orpha Eunice Washechek, 92, of Buffalo Lake, formerly of Hector, died Wednesday at the Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Lutheran Church in Hector.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Hughes Funeral Home in Hector.
She was born Feb. 2, 1908, at Omeemee, N.D., to Albert and Emma (Scharmer) Klucas. She graduated from Buffalo Lake High School in 1928.
On Feb. 2, 1934, she married Charles Nelson at Stewart. They lived in the Buffalo Lake area where she worked at the Skogmos dry goods store in Hector until retirement. Charles died in 1952.
On Dec. 23, 1970, she married Frank Washechek in Watertown. They lived in Hector. They delivered newspapers. He died April 5, 1983.
She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Hector, active in the women's organization, the World Gospel Mission and the Minnesota State Prayer Band.
She is survived by her son Jim (and Carol) Nelson of Seattle, Wash.; stepsons Bervin (and Kay) Washechek of Nevis, Steven (and Joyce) Washechek of Rochester, Calvin Washechek of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and three brothers.

Irene Welu
May 27, 1918 - Jan. 18, 2001
MONTEVIDEO -- Irene Anna Welu, 82, of Montevideo died Thursday at her home.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services.
She was born May 27, 1918, in Tolley, N.D., to Frank Sr. and Anna (Eilen) Peppersack. She worked for a time at Swift and Co. in Marshall.
She is survived by one daughter, Sharon (and Ted) Eastman of Ivanhoe; three sons, Dennis (and Laurie) of Pipestone, Ross (and Nancy) of Newark, Ohio, and Jim of Springfield, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Helen Dandurand of Henderson, Nev., Mary Marks of Riverside, Calif., Loretta Marino of Cupertino, Calif., and Alice Fields of Waite Park; two brothers, Edwin Peppersack of Alexandria and Frank Peppersack Jr. of Miltona.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Marlene "Molly" Sistad; two grandchildren and two sisters.

Mark Lia
Jan. 10, 1951 - Jan. 18, 2001
MILAN -- Mark Anthony Lia, 50, of Milan died Thursday at his home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan with the Rev. Wayne Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was born Jan. 10, 1951, in Montevideo to G. Palmer and Delores Lia. He graduated from Milan High School and Canby Technical College.
He married Kimberly Koenen on Feb. 5, 1977, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo. He served on the Swift Co-op Board of Directors for 20 years and the Board of Neighbors United Resource Board. He farmed most of his life on the home farm near Milan. He also worked as a mechanic for area implement dealers, at Parkview Ford in Montevideo and was currently employed by Riverview Farms of rural Morris.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly; one son, Christopher Lia of Alexandria; two daughters, Cheryl Lia of Minneapolis and Crystal Lia of Milan; his parents, G. Palmer and Delores Lia of Milan; and other relatives.

Willie Schwartz
June 15, 1926 - Jan. 17, 2001
VESTA -- Willie Edward Schwartz, 74, of Vesta died Wednesday at home.
His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Posen Township, Wood Lake. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a brother Walter (and Bernice) Schwartz of Granite Falls.

Ginger Rohman
Feb. 23, 1950 - Jan. 18, 2001
BELVIEW -- Ginger Lee Rohman, 50, of Belview died Thursday at her home after a battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church in Belview.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and for one hour prior to the services at the church.
She was born Feb. 23, 1950, in Fairmont to Donald and Dolores (Olson) Kuehl in Trimont. She graduated from Trimont High School and cosmetology school in Fairmont. She worked as a cosmetologist in Mankato and Belview.
She married Dan Rohman on April 4, 1970, in Sherburn. She started a day care in her home in 1978 and operated it for 23 years. She was active in summer recreation in Belview, was a church youth counselor, Latch Key supervisor and worked as an aide at Belview Elementary School.
She is survived by her husband, Dan; two sons, Rob of Mankato and Grant of Moorhead; her parents, Donald and Dolores Kuehl of Trimont; two brothers, Mike (and Renee) Kuehl of Truman and Scott (and Lori) Kuehl of Ormsby; two sisters, Mary (and Tim) Worth of Jackson, Mont., and Peg (and Terry) Nelson of Luverne; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Gordon D. Johnson
