Ruth H. Karns, age 91, of Canton, died Monday evening in Aultman Hospital. She was born in Noble County, daughter of the late Frank and Mary Wickens. She was a former employee of Isaly’s, Republic
Steel and Sears. A member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Pike Grange, Jolly Sixties of the Canton Baptist Temple, Canton South AARP, and former member of Daughters of America. Also preceded in death by her first husband, William Benjamin Medley December 13, 1968, her second husband, Harold Karns in 1982, a daughter, Blanche E. Crum in 1996 and an infant son, a sister, Olive Schramm and a brother, Russell Wickens. Survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Edna and Robert Dettinger of Canton; a son-in-law, Lawrence Crum; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on South Cleveland Ave. with Rev. Ed Rinehart officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Burial park. Sherwood Ake, age 92, of Canton, passed away Sunday, October 1st, 2000 at the Legends of Massillon after a brief illness. A lifetime resident of Canton, he was a Veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He was an Attorney at Law in Canton from 1932 retiring in 1988. A 1924 graduate of McKinley High School, he attended the College of Wooster and Hamilton College. A graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Law School. A member of The Church of the Savior United Methodist, a Past President of the Canton Kiwanis Club, a Past President of the Stark County Bar Assoc., Masonic Lodge-McKinley #431 and a member of the Mayflower Society. Preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jane Ake in 1981; and second wife, Neva Lowmiller Ake in 1993; a daughter, Emily A. Ipson; and brother, Theodore Ake. Survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James S. and Lois J. Ake of Fenton, MI; four grandchildren, Charles Ipson and Mary Helen Ipson both of Pittsburgh, PA, Kimberly Ake and Kevin Ake both of Fenton, MI; a special-niece, Eleanor Morgan of North Canton; and other nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be Friday 2:30 p.m. at the Church of the Savior United Methodist with Dr. Robert E. Buckley officiating. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be private. Wilbur G. Kuemerle, age 73, of Canton, died Monday in Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. He was a life resident of Canton and was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and was an avid Bowler. Janet I. Boger, age 95, of Canton, died Thursday, September 28, 2000 in Canton Christian Home. Born February 3, 1905 in Navarre, OH to the late Kenneth and Laura (Schmidt) Miller. She was a member of First Christian Church, 1923 graduate of McKinley High School, a 1928 graduate of Margaret Morrison College of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, a former secretary at Ohio University, the former secretary/treasurer of Boger Excavating, a member of Canton Women’s Club and was very active in various card clubs and bowling leagues. Preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Kenneth Boger on January 11, 1988. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Dorothy Boger and John and Nancy Boger, all of Canton; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Elizabeth Pasco, age 94, of Orlando, FL went home to be with the Lord early Saturday morning. She was born in 1906 to the late Elmer and Anne Miller in Dubois, PA. Elizabeth resided most of her life in the Louisville-Canton area. In 1990 she moved to Orlando, FL to live with her daughter. Preceded in death by her husband John Pasco in 1966 and one grandchild. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Nutt; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. In Orlando, Elizabeth attended the Episcopal Church of The Good Shepherd where a memorial service was held Monday. While living in Ohio, she was for many years a member and Sunday school teacher at Bethany United Methodist Church of Canton. Funeral service will be Thursday 2:00 p.m. in Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael M. Hayes officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Richard J. Howard, age 57, of North Canton, passed away Monday evening in his home. Born in Canton to the late Orie L. and Beulah Howard, he was employed at Danner Press. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the St. Peter Altar Rosary Society, the North Canton Eagles, and Graphic Communication International Union. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Orie J. Howard in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Regenia M. Darryl A. “Brad” Bradrick, age 56, of Canton, has gone home to be with the Lord on Tuesday afternoon after battling cancer since March. He was born and raised in Mansfield and moved in Canton in 1963. He retired from American Electric Power in April after 33 years service and was a member of Faith Community Church, Canton. Survived by his wife of 25 years, Judy A. Ferdinand “Fritz” Nasal, age 85, of Canton died Monday evening in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born June 14, 1915 in Minneapolis, MN to the late Josef and Anna Nasal. He was a graduate of McKinley High School and was a former U.S. Marine, having served in World War II and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Mr. Nasal was retired from the Timken Co. after 33 years of service, was retired from Canton City Schools after 10 years of service, and was a member of Porky’s Old Timers Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tekla in 1995. Survivors include one sister, Rose Brown, of Canton, one brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Lee Nasal of New Carlisle, OH, and three sons and daughters-in-law; Robert and Pati Nasal of Columbus, OH, Timothy Nasal of Lancaster, CA and Richard and Margaret Nasal of Eastlake, OH. Flora L. Dutrow, age 80, of resident of Oakhill Manor Care Center in Louisville, formerly of East Canton, passed away there Tuesday morning. She was born in Byesville and had been a resident of the Canton area 47 years. Mrs. Dutrow was a member of First Church of The Nazarene. Preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Albert G. Dutrow, on Nov. 4, 1993, and a daughter, Patricia Ann Dyer. Survived by two daughters and son-in-law, June Hill, of Birmingham, AL, and Audrey “Dee” and Rudolf Klapper, of Strasburg; eight grandchildren including Valerie Barnet of Louisville and Vicki Frymier, of Bradenton, FL, who were raised by Mr. & Mrs. Dutrow after the death of their mother, Patricia; and 25 great-grandchildren. James W. Curry, 66, of Louisville, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away Monday, October 2, 2000, in Mercy Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born August 22, 1934, in Louisville and was the son of the late Frank J. and Hilda (Pillot) Curry. He was a former Army veteran and a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church in Canton. Jim was an employee of Winn’s RV Center in North Canton for over 30 years where he worked in the body shop. He was an avid woodworker and gardener who loved the outdoors. Jim leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Sandra (Simon) Curry of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, JoAnn E. Curry of Louisville, Lisa J. and Jeffrey J. Pecenko of North Canton and Lora J. and Jeffrey T. Cutlip of Louisville; a sister, Jean Ossler of Louisville; three grandchildren, Morgan and Kyle Pecenko and Miranda Cutlip; three step-grandchildren, Jessica, Jillian and Julia Cutlip; special friends, Ron and Carol Pribula; and a special pet, Smudgie. Ferdinand 'Fritz' Nasal, age 85, of Canton died Monday evening in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born June 14, 1915 in Minneapolis, MN to the late Josef and Anna Nasal. He was a graduate of McKinley High School and was a former U.S. Marine, having served in World War II and attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mr. Nasal was retired from the Timken Co. after 33 years of service, was retired from Canton City Schools after 10 years of service, and was a member of Porky's Old Timers Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tekla in 1995. Survivors include one sister, Rose Brown, of Canton, one brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Lee Nasal of New Carlisle, OH, and three sons and daughters-in-law; Robert and Pati Nasal of Columbus, OH, Timothy Nasal of Lancaster, CA and Richard and Margaret Nasal of Eastlake, OH. There are eight grandchildren,
Kevin, Noelle, Elizabeth, Carrie, David, Kimberly, Tiffany and Matthew. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, October 7 at 12:30 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Fr. William R. Kothmayer, age 83, of Cape Coral, FL, passed away early Sunday morning. Born in Connecticut, he spent most of his life as a resident of Canton. He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Faye (Hoobler) Kothmayer with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage; his children, Karen Skeeles (William) of Tuscon, AZ, Trudy Bope (David) of Tucson, AZ, Kurt Kothmayer (Carolyn) of North Canton, OH; and Philip Kothmayer (Katherine) of Ocala, FL; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was a long time member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Canton until he moved to Florida where he has been a Charter Member of Messiah Lutheran Church and where he hand crafted the beautiful stained glass artistry that adorns the church's windows. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II in the European Theater and served aboard the USS Arkansas. He was a partner in Stark Motors in Hartville, owner of Kothmayers Variety Store in East Canton and a real estate investor before his retirement. A gifted artist and a beloved husband, father and grandfather, he will be missed by all. Memorial services will be held in Cape Coral, FL. A graveside service will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery on Friday, October 6, 2000 at 1 p.m. with Rev. James Kennell officiating. William A. Filliez, age 69, of Lincoln, NE, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 after five years of colon cancer ups and downs. Born May 27, 1931 in Canton to George and Margaret (Hise) Filliez. He worked as a salesman at Payless Cashways Lumber Co. in Lincoln. Survived by his wife of 33 years, Peggy S. (Kruger) Filliez; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey A. Eva M. Dey, age 90, passed away Monday Oct. 2, 2000 in Altercare of Hartville after a long
illness. Born in Greentown, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. And Laura (Summers) Miller. She grew up in Waco and attended Mapleton schools. She worked at Stark Dry Goods and was a life long member of Canton # 190 O.E.S. Preceded in death by her husband, George Dey in 1981. Survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George and Marie Dey of North Canton; sisters, Luella Lape of New Port Richey, FL and June Schlabach of Canton; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Private services were held for family and burial took place in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Eleanor E. Morris, age 93, of Canton, OH passed away Tuesday morning in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Canton on Oct. 7, 1906, she was a retired employee of the Alliance Public Schools, retiring in 1968 after ten years of service. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alliance until moving back to Canton in 1978, where she attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Canton. She was preceded in death by parents, Alphonse and Elizabeth Erbland; her husband, Elden L. Morris, who passed away on Sept. 11, 1994; a brother, Cletus Erbland. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Daniel Mallon of Canton; her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Ann Morris of Chesapeake, VA; three grandchildren, Christine (Matthew) Landry of Michigan, Patrick Morris of East Lansing, MI, Jacqueline Morris of Holland, MI; two nieces and nephew, Dorothy Sharpe of Houston, TX, Sara Mitchell of San Francisco, CA and Ronald (Darlinda) Erbland of Romana, CA. Sam Otis Williams, Jr., age 49, went home to be with the Lord

Our beloved brother, Sam Otis Williams was born on January 27, 1951 in Brent, AL, to Mrs. Snowbell Williams and the late Sam Otis Williams, Sr. They moved to Ohio at the age of 10. He was a former employee of Republic Steel, also worked at the Timken Company and Ford Motor Company in Detroit, MI. Sam is preceded in death by his father, nine uncles and two aunts. He was a member of God's House of Grace C.O.G.I.C. He attended McKinley High School. Gene F. Thursby, 84, passed away October 2, 2000, at Altercare of Hartville, after a long illness. Born in Massillon, he went to school in Greensburg and lived most of his life in Uniontown. He formerly owned and operated Gene's Service Center at 224 and Canton Road, and retired from the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in 1980. Mr. Thursby was a member of Advent Lutheran Church in Uniontown, and had faithfully served as a lay minister for the Lutheran Church in America, supplied preaching in over 40 congregations throughout Ohio. He was also a member of Coventry Lodge 665 F&AM, and volunteered over 2,000 hours at Edwin Shaw Hospital. Gene will always be remembered for his abiding faith, generous heart, and strong spirit. Preceded in death by brother, Robert. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Betty L.; son, Gene R. Thursby of Gainesville, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Emily L. and Richard W. Ferris of Ellet; beloved granddaughter, Sarah L. Pressler; brother, Ray Thursby of Massillon; and many other relatives. Gene's family would like to thank the staff at Altercare of Hartville for their special care during his illness. Laura Tartaglio-Hatfield, age 38, waged a courageous battle against breast cancer during her earthly life and is now enjoying a new life with Christ.
She was graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1980 and attended Bowling Green State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Procurement. She was graduated in 1984. Laura had resided in Atlanta for 16 years. Her present employment was with Staples Communications as a District Sales Manager. She was also a partner in a speciality clothing company called 'Over the Edge'. She is survived by husband, Cyrus R. Hatfield and cat "Sashi" of Atlanta; parents, Dr. Michael and Joyce Tartaglio of Canton; sister, Sheree Boyle, brother-in-law, Kevin of Canton; nephews, Michael, Cory, Sean and niece, Katlin Ann; sister, Lisa McClellan, brother-in-law, Rick of Columbus, OH; nephews, Mitchell and Connor; aunts, Honey Bayer and Eleanor Arunski; cousins in Canton, Mark and Joyce Arunski, Tina Hodel and Diane Ergon, Michael and Jeffrey Bayer, Paula and George Fucii; Uncle Tony and Aunt Dorothy from Canton and Phoenix, AZ; cousins, Edward, Michael, Toni Ann, Nancy and Adele from Canton and Phoenix. Laura enjoyed participating in several sports, including: tennis, volleyball and walking. She was a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, where she taught kindergarten Sunday School. LaVern L. Mang, age 76, of Canton, died Tuesday evening in the home following a brief illness. Born September 14, 1924 in Canton to the late Edmund and Eva Mang. He attended Christ Presbyterian Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during World War II in the 756th Field Artillary Battalion. As a result of his military service Mr. Mang was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local #69 for 50 years, was a member of Canton Moose Lodge #233, was active with the Christ Prebyterian Food Ministry and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He is preceded in death by his wife, Pearl M. Mang (1994); one sister, Marcella Gearheart; and four brothers, Russell, Leroy, Clarence and Edmund Mang. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, James L. Mang of Huntington Beach, CA, Greg and Peggy Mang of Green, OH, Jeffrey M. and Mardie Mang of Huntington Beach, CA; and one daughter, Cheryl L. Mang of the home; two grandchildren, Lauren Michelle and Justin Gregory Mang; one brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Mary Ann Mang of Canton; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Paul Schaefer of North Canton, Martha and George Hitchcock of Massillon; and one sister-in-law, Kathryn Leise of Canton; his very special friends, Louella Farber, Kathy Armstrong, Julie Allman, Sarah Everett, Maria DeGanis, Jan and Paul Evans, Chris Simmons and Jo Harmon and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
