Frances J. Fultyn
Frances J. Fultyn, age 90, of Mary Esther, Fla., passed away at her residence on Wednesday, May 9, 2001.
She was born on March 5, 1911, in Chicago, and was a resident of this area for the past nine years, moving here from Los Alamos, N.M. She was a very active person in the Creative Senior Center. She enjoyed sharing her talent of knitting various items such as teddy bears. These knitted gifts of love were donated to various non-profit organizations. She knitted over 10,000 teddy bears that found homes throughout the world over the past 35 years.
Mrs. Fultyn will be greatly missed by her family and all her special friends she met over the years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Fultyn in 1982. Survivors include her son, Robert and wife Marilyn Fultyn of Mary Esther; and grandchild, Eric Victor Fultyn and wife Jackie of Crestview, Fla.
At Mrs. Fultyn's request there will be no local services. Her final resting place will be next to her husband in Los Alamos.
McLaughlin Mortuary, 17 Chestnut Ave., Fort Walton Beach, Fla., is entrusted with arrangements.

Mabel Ruth Thompson
Mabel Ruth Thompson, age 98, of Mary Esther, Fla., passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in a local hospital.
She was born in North Bend, Ohio, on July 28, 1902, the daughter of Clyde and Louise Alday. She lived in Cincinnati and Indianapolis most of her life. She was employed for over 25 years by Lane Bryant Inc. She moved to Mary Esther in 1962. While living in retirement in Mary Esther, she became a surrogate grandmother to all the neighborhood children.
Mabel was preceded in death by her daughter, Glenna Jarrett. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Don and Carol Walker of Mary Esther; grandchildren, Mike and Tara Walker, Jo Jarrett Campbell and husband Marty Campbell, all of Navarre, Fla., Mark Walker of Mary Esther, and Tami Walker Minton and husband Michael Minton of Green Cove Springs, Ala. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, Christopher Walker, Marty Campbell, Brook Campbell, Michaela Minton, Daniel Walker, Brandon Walker and Joshua Albright.
In keeping with her wishes, Mabel was cremated and her life will be celebrated at a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home.

Joseph A. Tremblay
Joseph A. "Andy" Tremblay, age 68, entered into eternal rest at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center on Thursday, May 10, 2001.
The son of the late Ludger and Rose Lamoth Tremblay, he was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on April 21. 1933. Andy devoted most of his life to his country by serving in the U.S. Air Force for over 28 years, retiring as a senior master sergeant. He then went to work for ST Keltec in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Andy met and married Jean Jackson in 1957 and they shared 43 years together.
Andy is survived by his wife, Jean Tremblay at home in Niceville, Fla.; son, Jon Eric Tremblay and wife Tamra of Destin, Fla.; brother, Joseph Tremblay of Panama City, Fla.; sisters, Pauline Wright of Crestview, Fla., and Helen Prince of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at McLaughlin Twin Cities Funeral Home, to which friends and relatives are invited.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, May 14, at the funeral home with the Rev. Michael Cherub officiating. Interment will follow in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Cottondale, Fla.

Robert G. McKinley
Robert G. McKinley of Niceville, Fla., entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 80 years old.
Born Oct. 29, 1920, in Franklin, Ala., he was the son of the late Robert and Maggie Mae Gaines McKinley. An Emerald Coast resident for 46 years, Robert retired from the Okaloosa County Water Systems Department where he worked as an administrator.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Niceville; son, Robert Michael and wife Donna McKinley of Fort Lauderdale; sister, Shirley Watson of Pensacola, Fla.; grandson, Robert Michael McKinley Jr. of Arlington, Va.; and great-grandson, Christopher McKinley, also of Arlington.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 14, at McLaughlin Twin Cities Funeral Home in Niceville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the funeral home with the Rev. David Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Svea, Fla.

Iwan Conley Martin
Conley Martin, age 75, passed away May 11, 2001, at Healthmark Regional Medical Center in DeFuniak Springs, Fla., after a courageous battle of some 30 years with Parkinson's Disease. He was a lifelong resident of Walton County, Portland Community, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jordan Albert and Mattie Shaw Martin; and a brother, Robert Toss Martin.
He graduated from Walton High School in 1944, and immediately joined the United States Merchant Marine Corps, serving as ship navigator, delivering supplies to our Naval fleets in the war zones during World War II.
Conley was a certified master welder and taught the art of welding. He was a former civil service employee at the Climatic Hangar on Eglin Air Force Base. He owned and operated Martin Well Drilling for 15 years. He was elected as a Walton County Commissioner for two four-year terms and served as board chairman. He was president of the Northwest Florida Planning and Advisory Council (1974-1975) and represented the needs of 13 Northwest Florida counties in Washington D.C.
He and the late Roy Davenport were the driving force in starting the first "Stripped Bass" program in Walton County. He assisted in establishing the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department, Freeport Lions Club, serving as president and vice president, and was the remaining charter member. He was a member of Freeport Masonic Lodge 108, York Rites of Crestview, Fla., and Hadji Shrine Temple, Pensacola, Fla. He was an active member of Portland United Methodist Church for 60 years and was instrumental in the planning and construction of the present church building.
Conley was well-known and respected throughout North-west Florida for his outstanding leadership abilities, untiring efforts, honesty, concern and loyalty to his community, county and city governments. He responded without hesitation to the needs of others and was unshakable in his faith to the church, family and community. He never knew boredom and enjoyed the challenge of hard work. Each day was lived to the fullest, and he was an inspiration to others and many sought his advice. His word was his bond.
He is survived by his devoted and caring wife of 42 years, Montez Martin of Freeport, Fla.; a daughter, Judy Blalock; a grandson, Jason Conley Blalock; a granddaughter, Brandy Lee Blalock of McMinnville, Tenn.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Colin and Frances Martin of Crestview and Donnie and Dorothy Martin of Mobile, Ala.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Alberta Settlemire of Pensacola, Paulette and Donnell Davis of Freeport and Linda Hall of Ponce de Leon, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Doris Martin of Crestview; an aunt, Lavonia Brown of Niceville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Portland United Methodist Church, Portland, Fla., with the Rev. George Dunn and the Rev. Daren Hyers officiating. Burial will follow in Hatcher Cemetery.
A time of visitation was held on Saturday, May 12, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Clary-Godwin Freeport Chapel, Freeport, Fla.

Nancy Jane Melvin
Nancy Jane Melvin, age 69, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died Sunday, May 20, 2001, after a long illness.
Mrs. Melvin was born in Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 17, 1931, to Bonnie and Jack Chapman. She lived in Fort Walton Beach for the past four years and in Panama City, Fla., for many years before that.
Mrs. Melvin was preceded in death by her husband, Dudley Melvin; her parents; her stepfather, Roy Staton; and two sons, Michael Springfield and Timothy Napier.
Survivors include her son, Richard Springfield of Fort Walton Beach; sisters, Carol Butler of Fletcher, N.C., and Kathy Sills of Logan, Utah; brother, Jack Chapman of Houston; grandchildren, Rachael Springfield, Daniel Springfield and Kenneth Springfield, all of Fort Walton Beach; nieces, Donna Goss of Fairview, N.C., Dawn Pryor of Hendersonville, N.C., Murphy Kanupp of Hendersonville, Kelley Randell of Hendersonville, Tere Leming of Leesburg, Va., and Jackie Powell of Pasadena, Texas; and nephews, David Przybyszewski of Atlanta, Doug Sills of Leesburg, and Roy Sills of Sterling, Va.
Private funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 26, in Fletcher. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hendersonville, N.C.

Dawn Jones
Dawn Jones, age 33, of Crestview, Fla., passed away May 18, 2001.
She was born on Jan. 13, 1967, in Gastonia, N.C., and lived in Crestview since 1996.
Survivors include her mother, Evelyn Wiggins of Crestview; brothers, Joshua William Simms of Salt Lake City, and John Franklin Wiggins of Crestview; sister, Alicia Lynn Bullock of Niceville, Fla.; maternal grandmother, Gladys L. Jones of Gastonia; uncles, Stanford Jones, Ronald Berry Jones and Donald Larry Jones; and numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Brackney Funeral Service with the Rev. Rhett Everage officiating. Burial will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday.

Robert E. Finlayson
Robert E. "Bob" Finlayson entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 21, 2001, at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. He was 50 years of age.
Born on Sept. 12, 1950, he was the son of Robert E. and Guthrie Pridgen Finlayson. Bob was a lifelong area resident and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother of Niceville, Fla., at home; wife Diane, also at home, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; daughters, Samantha Rae and Holly Danielle, at home; brother, Jimmy Finlayson of Niceville; and sisters, Debbie Huff, Wanda Finlayson and Laura Finlayson, all of Niceville.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at New Hope Baptist Church in Valparaiso, Fla., with the Rev. David Wilson officiating.

Dorothy Morrison
Dorothy Morrison, age 72, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Monday, May 21, 2001, at her home.
She was born on Dec. 28, 1928, in England and lived in Crestview for the past two years, coming here from Lake Stevens, Wash. Mrs. Morrison was the former manager of the Ramada Gift Shop in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Morrison of Crestview; daughters, Penny White of Holland, and Susan Johnston and husband Jeff of Milton, Fla.; stepchildren, Charles Morrison of Modesto, Calif., and Adele Peeters of Laurel, Md.; sister, Iris Mercer and husband Alan; and grandchildren, Tara, Jason, Adam and Damian.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, in the chapel of Brackney Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

Elnor H. Owen
Elnor H. Owen, age 84, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday evening, May 22, 2001, in a local hospital.
She is survived by a son, Jack E. Owen and wife Patricia of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; daughter, Jean O. Rivard and husband Bill of Fort Walton Beach; grandchildren, Renee Rivard Lawson and husband Chris of Auckland, New Zealand, and Lee O. Rivard and wife Amy of Destin, Fla. Elnor is also survived by his sisters, Ruby Berry of Lapeer, Mich., and Lois Bolton of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and brother, Paul G. Huie of DeFuniak Springs.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Chumley, pastor of First Baptist Church of DeFuniak Springs, officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the American Diabetes Foundation in Elnor's memory.

Thomas E. Moore
Thomas E. Moore, age 71, of 7108 Chapman Road, Laurel Hill, Fla., died Friday, May 18, 2001, at his home.
He was born on Aug. 17, 1929, in Milligan, Fla. He occupation was pulpwood. Mr. Moore was a lifetime resident of Campton, Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, at graveside with Brother Larry McAdams, an Elder in the Crestview Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses officiating. Viewing of the remains will be at graveside from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Mr. Moore is survived by his sister-in-law, Ruby Jackson of Baker, Fla.; aunts, Ruby Moore of Atmore, Ala., Dassie Moore of Cleveland, Dessie Strickland of Nashville, Tenn., Sarah Moore of Crestview, Fla., Annie Forman and Glady Greaden, both of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; daughters, Vernessa of Campton, Fla., and Hattie M. Moore of Crestview; sons, Thomas E. Moore, Samphon, Chubbie Moore, Earick P. Moore, all of Campton, and Vado P. Moore and wife Lee Ann Moore of Crestview; sisters, Laurie B. Moore of Crestview, Lillie Malone of Prince George, Va., and Juantia C. Moore of Hope Well, Va.; brothers, Sampson C. (Eouise) Moore of Gary, Ind., Willie P. (Betty) Moore of Campton, J.W. (Mammie) Moore of Laurel Hill, and Wallace Moore of Miami; uncle, Charlie (Annie) Moore of Campton; 10 grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ralph E. Nelson Jr.
Ralph E. Nelson Jr., age 73, of Destin, Fla., died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in a local nursing home after a three-year battle with bone marrow cancer.
He was born on Aug. 27, 1927, in Orange, Mass., and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Nelson retired from General Electric Co. as a division financial manager and was a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston.
Survivors include his wife, M. Louise Nelson of Destin; sons, Daniel J. Nelson of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Thomas M. Nelson of Syracuse, N.Y.; daughters, Kathlyn Nelson Rose of Bowling Green, Ky., and Cynthie Nelson Rose of Mount Sterling, Ky.; brother, Richard E. Nelson of Phillipston, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26, in Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Bonifay, Fla., with Father Joe Caffrey officiating.

Pearl "Marty" Hayden, age 73, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in a local hospital.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach.
Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Harley Moseley of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Mariece Herring of Fort Walton Beach; and other family members.
A graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25, in Beal Memorial Cemetery.

Margaret Bailey Cuprill
Margaret Bailey Cuprill, age 76, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in Portland, Fla.
She was born on Jan. 12, 1925, in Athens, Ga., the daughter of the late George Walter and Euree Mason Eberhardt. She was a resident of Portland for the past three years after moving back from Basin Bayou, Fla. Mrs. Cuprill was an avid collector of old Avon perfume bottles.
Her philosophy was if she could make one person smile in a day's time, then her life was worthwhile for that day. She was noted for saying that people did not smile enough.
Survivors include a son, Manuel "Manny" Cuprill of Los Angeles; daughter, Deshine Bowls and husband Jim of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, George W. Eberhardt of Virginia, and Eric H. Eberhardt of Wilmington, N.C.; sisters, Windoln "Dimp" Dawson of Okaloosa Island, Fla., Louweene V. James of Freeport, Fla., and Veneta M. Euree of Orlando; and four grandchildren.
Memorialization will be by cremation.

Carrie Beatty Smith
Carrie Beatty Shultz Smith, age 81, of Baker, Fla., passed away Monday, May 14, 2001, at North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview, Fla., after a brief illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Carrie Shultz; husband, William Smith Sr.; brother, William Shultz; brother-in-law, Robert Clark; and nephew, William Shultz Jr.
Mrs. Smith was born in Oakland, Ky. She was a former resident of Greensboro, Ala., Mary Esther, Fla., and Dothan, Ala., and had resided in Baker for the past three years. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greensboro, Ala. Survivors include two sons, Bill Smith and wife Amy, and James Smith Sr.; one sister, Kathryn Clark; four grandchildren, Jamie Chamberlain and husband Jeff, James Smith Jr. and wife Jennifer, and B.J. and Brittany Smith; great-grandchildren, Amanda Chamberlain, and Alexis and Brian Smith; nieces, Kathleen Ansley and husband Wayne Ansley, Alice Dawson, and Mary Elizabeth Addair; nephews, Robert Clark, Jr. and wife Sharon, and Roy Clark; great-nieces and nephews, Craig Dawson, Ron Dawson and wife Shannon, Rob Clark,, Clarence Ansley, Sandra Elizabeth Barnes and husband Wade, Jimmy Shultz, Andrea Ansley, Rebecca Addair, and Justin Clark; great-great-nieces and nephews, Lucas Dawson, Maubee Shultz, and Isabella and Summer Dawson.
Graveside services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, in Jessie Rogers Cemetery, Mary Esther.
