BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Mary A. (Richey) Ballengee, 65, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at Heritage Hall Healthcare after a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Dayton, Ohio, and had lived in Big Stone Gap for the past nine years. She was a beautician for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Gene Ballengee; and her father, John H. Richey.
Surviving are one daughter, Jonné Lynn Ballengee of Big Stone Gap, Va.; her mother, Mildred V. Richey of Big Stone Gap, Va.; four brothers, John Richey of Dayton, Ohio, Jack Richey of Fort Myers, Fla., Norman Richey of Tucson, Ariz., and James Richey of Dayton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Polk Grove Cemetery, Butler Township (Dayton, Ohio) with the Rev. R.E. Brown officiating.

Inez Ferguson Barr, 93, Jonesborough.
JONESBOROUGH - Inez Ferguson Barr, 93, 1725 Highway 81 North, died at 3:10 a.m. Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at her home after an extended illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Tenn.
Mrs. Barr was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Jack Milton Barr (Aug. 15, 1995); three sons, James Elmer Barr, Nashville, (2001), Herbert Benny Barr, Dekalb, Ill., Billy Jack Barr, Johnson City; two daughters, Elsie Ford, Jonesborough, and infant daughter, Edith Barr; two grandchildren, Richard Miller and Donald Dean Barr.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Dorothy) Appleton, La Vergne, Tenn., Mrs. Luther (Martha) Wright, Jonesborough, and Mrs. Harold (Betty) Bailey, Jonesborough, Mrs. Max (Nancy) Christian, Fall Branch, and Mrs. Paul (Carolyn) Gibson, Fall Branch; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Fall Branch Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes or any time at the home.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Joe Blankenship, the Rev. Victor Wallace, and the Rev. Joe Baker officiating.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

MOUNTAIN HOME, Tenn. - Services for Earl Bolden, 78, of Church Hill, who passed away Sunday afternoon (Jan. 27, 2002), will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill, with Dr. Ed Clevinger and Bishop Jack Forbes officiating.
Calling hours are from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
A military graveside service will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday by the Church Hill VFW Post No. 9754 at the VA Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn.
Family and friends who will be attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 11:50 a.m.

KINGSPORT - Mass for Betty S. Cooper, 84, who passed away Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at St. Dominic's Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Burton officiating.
Family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Monte Vista Burial Park.

Nita B. Couch, 95, Lexington, S.C.
LEXINGTON, S.C. - Nita B. Couch, 95, died at 2 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) in Lexington Extended Care after an extended illness.
Born in Greene County, she moved to Kingsport in 1925. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Her husband, Sam J. Couch, preceded her in death in 1988.
Surviving are her daughters, Patsy Brotherton, West Columbia, S.C., and Judy Lewis, Surfside, S.C.; grandchildren, Patricia Bouknight, Columbia, S.C., Alicia Brotherton, Columbia, S.C., Christopher L. Lewis, Crimora, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Lewis, Jared Lewis and Kayla Bouknight; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery with Dr. Ronald L. Davis officiating.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Lucy B. Cox, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Lucy Buckingham Cox went to be with the Lord on Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at Wexford House.
She was born in Washington County, Tenn., but had lived her life in Kingsport since early childhood.
During her working years, she was employed at Tennessee Eastman Company, J.C. Penneys, Rental Uniform Co., Kay's Uniforms, and later began to do monogram work from her home.
She was a former member of Mountain View United Methodist Church, and had been attending St. Luke United Methodist Church until she became ill.
She was the daughter of the late R.E. "Buck" Buckingham and Belle Hammitt-Buckingham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Fred Cox (1985); brother, Lee K. Buckingham (1974); and sister, Mescal Smith (1997).
Surviving are one daughter, Jerrie Bevington, Seattle, Wash.; one grandson, Chris Bevington, and one granddaughter, Kim Bevington, both of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Evelyn Alley, Kingsport, and Venice Lane, Logan, Ohio; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in East Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Bob Yates and the Rev. Michael Teague officiating.
The family will receive friends at East Lawn Funeral Home following the graveside service.
Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 2600 East Center Street, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664.

Ranzy Grizzle, 89, Lebanon Va.
LEBANON, Va. - Ranzy Grizzle, 89, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at his home.
Born Jan. 1, 1913 in the Weavers Creek community in Russell County, he was the son of the late George Grizzle and Katherine Musick Grizzle. He was a retired farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ollie Grizzle, Steve Grizzle and William Grizzle; four sisters, Virgie Kossoss, Bertie Jones, Nannie Sutherland and Loney Sutherland.
Surviving are one brother, Frank Grizzle, Cleveland; also several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Combs Funeral Service.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Duane Musick officiating.
Burial will be Thursday in the Grizzle Family Cemetery on Weavers Creek.

Robert Hartsock, 69, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Robert Henry Hartsock, 69, Howard Street, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at St. Mary's Hospital, Norton, Va.
Born in Scott County, Va. (Nickelsville), he lived in Norton, Va., most of his life. He was self-employed and a retired farmer.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Darthuli Lawson Hartsock.
Surviving are two brothers, Virgil Hartsock and Grady Hartsock, both of Kingport; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Home National Cemetery with Chaplain Joe W. Byrd officiating. The American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 will be in charge of the graveside.
Family and friends will meet at Mt. Home National Cemetery by 10:55 a.m. Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be the Color Guard.
Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is in charge of arrangements.

Susie Ann Huff, 54, Keokee, Va.
KEOKEE, Va. - Susie Ann Letanosky Huff, 54, passed away Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) at Wellmont-Lonesome Pine Hospital.
She was born in Lynch, Ky., and had lived in Keokee since 1975. She was of the Catholic faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Anna Letanosky; and a sister, Elizabeth Boggs.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas E. Huff Sr.; daughter, Vicki Huff of Keokee; son, Thomas E. Huff Jr. of Keokee; two grandchildren, Courtney Huff and Caitlin Huff; two brothers, Joe Letanosky of Lynch, Ky., and Louis Letanosky of Clinton, Ky.; one sister, Gladys Carroll of Shelbyville, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Father Robert Rademacher officiating.
Burial will follow in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Kenneth Hunley, 72, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Kenneth (Bear) Hunley, 72, of 109 Jefferson Avenue, passed away Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) at 3 a.m. at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Hunley was born in Port Clinton, Ohio, but had spent most of his life in Hawkins County. He owned and operated Hunley's Garage for over 40 years and was the owner of Bear Hunley Racing. He was associated with NASCAR racing for over 50 years.
Mr. Hunley was a member of the Clay Masonic Lodge No. 386, Jericho Shrine Temple, Knoxville Consistory of Scottish Rite Masons, Church Hill Chapter No. 238, Kingsport Council No. 117 and the Kingsport Commandery No. 33.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge and Della Simpson Hunley; one stepdaughter, Rhonda Collins.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mrs. Rhoda C. Hunley, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenny and Katrina Hunley, Gary and Debbie Hunley, and David Hunley, all of Church Hill; grandchildren, Tracy Dayton, Kent Hunley, Cody Hunley, Kayla Doran, Christy Hunley and Megan Hunley; great-grandchildren, Austin Dayton, Hunter Dayton and Jacob Dayton; three sisters, Lillian Jones and Peggy Compton, both of Kingsport, and sister and brother-in-law, Nina Faye and Richard Oaks, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at East Lawn Cemetery.
Family and friends are to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. today.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Jeter, Worley Barrett, Charlie Bill Gray, Larry Collins, Ben Bradley and John Estes.
Honorary pallbearers will be A.L. Webb, Paul Chesnutt, Robert Christian, Gene Glover, Tony Morton, BHR and Stiltner Racing Teams.

Virgile Jackson, 96, Lebanon, Va.
LEBANON, Va. - Virgile Yates Jackson, 96, Route 1, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at her home.
Born Jan. 28, 1906 in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late James Franklin Yates and Mary Mollie Buckles Yates. She was a mother and homemaker.
She was a member of the Miller View Primitive Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Fred W. Jackson.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Lillian Kay Settle; one son, Ford O'Brien Jackson; two grandchildren, Mary Kay Settle and Arthur Fred Settle; one great-grandson, Robert Kyle Settle; one sister, Lola Mae Fields; three brothers, Conley Yates, Clarence Yates and Frank Yates Jr.
Surviving are three daughters, Alma Wilson, Lebanon, Judy Breeding, Cleveland, and Joyce Marlyn Griffith, Centerburg, Ohio; two sons, Jerome Jackson and Almerine Jackson, both of Lebanon; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Sue Hughes and O'dell Nash, both of Lebanon; two brothers, Bruce Yates, Honaker, and Ernest Yates, Lebanon; also several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are after 6 p.m. today at Combs Funeral Service, Lebanon.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Miller View Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Garnell Gilbert and Elder Franklin Viers officiating.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in the Russell Memorial Cemetery.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Joseph Pilkenton, 79, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Joseph Vernon Pilkenton, 79, passed away Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) at Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, Va.
He was a retired coal miner of Old Ben Coal Co., and a member of local union No. 8017 UMWA. He was a member of Hoge Masonic Lodge No. 8 A.F.& A.M., Wise, and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Lee Adams Pilkenton; and two brothers, Dennis Pilkenton and Newell Pilkenton.
Surviving are one daughter, Marjorie Elizabeth Pilkenton of Kingsport; four sons, Samuel Lee Pilkenton and wife Gail, Joseph Mack Pilkenton and wife Janice, and Timothy Vernon Pilkenton and wife Joanne, all of Wise, Va., and Phillip Lee Pilkenton of Norton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two aunts, Victoria Kiser of Pound, Va., and Flora Mooney of Clintwood, Va.; and special beloved friends, Peggy Hammonds and Carl Connell.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bruce Pilkenton and Pastor Tim Hager officiating.

Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Donna Lee Williams, 90, Jonesville, Va.
JONESVILLE, Va. - Miss Donna Lee Williams, 90, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
She was born and lived in Lee County, Va., most of her life. She had lived with her niece and nephew, Jean and Johnny Bledsoe in Baltimore, Md., for the last six years.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Susie Williams, Jonesville, Va.; one sister, Ruby Rutledge Gibson; two brothers, Pete and Bruce Williams, all of Jonesville, Va.
Surviving are two brothers, Howard Williams, Carter Hall Nursing Home in Dryden, Va., and Roy (Smokey) Williams, Jonesville, Va.; three sisters, Lillie Mae Johnson, Lee Nursing Center, Pennington Gap, Va., Myrtle Lockhart and Maude Miles, both of Jonesville, Va.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Va.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bill Booth officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Jesse A. Wyatt Jr., 70, Gray.
GRAY - Jesse A. Wyatt Jr., 70, 116 Skyland Drive, died Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) in the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn.
A native of Wise County, Va., he had lived in Washington County since 1972.
Son of the late Jesse A. Wyatt Sr. and Georgia E. Bell Wyatt, Mr. Wyatt was a retired employee of Sun Sports Wear of Johnson City and former employee of Siemens. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Reginal Wyatt and Arthur Wyatt.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Melva Jackson Wyatt; five daughters, Beverly Davis of Jonesborough, Nancy Lee Wyatt of Johnson City, Tresa Gail Wyatt of Gray, Vickie Davis and Bobbie Helms, both of Houston, Texas; one brother, Glenn Wyatt of Alabama; one sister, Jerry Chandler of Kingsport; several grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Woodall-Anderson Funeral Home, Johnson City.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn. Military honors will be provided by the Hawkins County VFW Honor Guard.
Family and friends will meet in the cemetery.
