GATE CITY, Va. - Gertrude V. Akers, 88, entered into rest Friday (Aug. 30, 2002) at the Brian Center Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 5, 1913 in Scott County, Va., she was of the Baptist faith and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Etta Lane.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Taft Akers; sisters, Omma Lane and Lillian Baldwin; brothers, Ross Lane and Ulysses (Jack) Lane; and one granddaughter, Pamela Kim Akers.
Surviving are two sons, William Kyle Akers and wife, Vena, Duffield, Va., and Harry L. Akers Sr., and wife, Geneva, Gate City, Va.; brother, Willard Jay Lane, Mount Carmel; grandchildren, Harry Akers Jr. and wife, Ginger, Jennifer Akers and Ron Stewart, Anita Summey and husband, Junior, Belinda Bumbalough and husband, Donnie and Raymond Akers; great-grandchildren, Harry Akers III, Shawn M. Akers, April and Erica Summey, Rebecca Miller and husband, Jason and Steven Gilliam.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Jimmy Combs officiating. Music will be provided by the Mabe Quartet.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Carter Cemetery, Copper Ridge community. The family will be meeting at the cemetery for the graveside services.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

John Alvis, 78, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - John Wilson Alvis, 78, of Caney Creek Road, died Friday (Aug. 30, 2002) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Rogersville after an extended illness.
He retired from TVA and was a member of Caney Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Alvis was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Kate Lawson Alvis; parents, Wilson and Molly Jones Alvis; and brother, Mack Alvis.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Courtney Alvis, of the home; one son, Jerry Alvis and wife, Marilyn of Morristown; sister, Dora Ketron of Rogersville; special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Delmer Courtney and Allie Mae Wilburn; several nieces and nephews; and special little friend, Trevor Stuffel.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ed Roy Cuthruell and the Rev. John Arnott officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post #5266 Morristown.

John F. Barberia, 50, Baltimore, Md.
BALTIMORE, Md. - John F. Barberia, 50, went to walk with the angels Saturday (Aug. 24, 2002) after a bout with lung cancer.
He served in the Air Force from 1970 to 1974 and was a Vietnam veteran.
Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Sheila Lovelace Barberia; one daughter, Joni Marie Iley and husband Chip; parents, John J. and Mary Barberia; sisters, Mrs. John (Marie) Zoltowski and Mrs. Rick (Carol) Potera, all of Baltimore; brother, Joseph Barberia of North Carolina; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; special brother, Mike Lovelace; special grandnephew, Jordan Kyle Lovelace; special aunts, Mildred Neeley, all of Kingsport, and Wilma Derting of Tucson, Ariz.; special friends, Brent Liemkuhler of Kingsport and Ray Petty of Johnson City.
Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Weber City Christian Church in Weber City, Va., with special uncle, the Rev. Roy E. Neeley officiating.

Lyle E. Bellamy, 78, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Lyle E. Bellamy, 78, entered into rest Thursday (Aug. 29, 2002) at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Gate City Funeral Home.

James Bracken, Blountville.
KINGSPORT - James Jackson Bracken of Blountville, Tenn., joined many of his family and friends in the Lord's presence on Thursday (Aug. 29, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport.
Born in Liberty, S.C., on Dec. 7, 1919, Jack spent many years serving the nursery industry in South Carolina. In 1986, he retired from Milliken Corp. in Spartanburg, S.C., as Horticulture Consultant. In 1989, he made his home in Blountville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Agathia Hunter Bracken; three sisters, Mrs. Vera Kelly, Liberty, S.C., Mrs. Meda Tinsley, Liberty, S.C., and Mrs. Laura Clements, Seneca, S.C.; and one brother, Ray Bracken, Easley, S.C.
His legacy continues in his son, Mike Bracken of Blountville; his daughter, Mrs. Eldon Lufi of Blountville; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. The family will be at 1501 Childress Ferry Road, Blountville, to receive friends and family.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Nick Adams and Pastor Ted Blumberg officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted at East Lawn Cemetery by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 (Joe Byrd, chaplain officiating) immediately following the service.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Nellie Drayne, 81, Johnson City.
JOHNSON CITY - Nellie Evelyn Drayne, 81, formerly of 207 Delaware St., died Friday (Aug. 30, 2002) at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City and a daughter of Eddie Byrd and Fannie Carr Bayless.
Mrs. Drayne was a homemaker and a member of Heritage Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil O. Drayne; one brother and one sister.
Surviving are two sons, Eddie F. Drayne, Johnson City and Randell O. Drayne, Kingsport; grandson, Robert Drayne, Kingsport; granddaughter, Ginny Brandon, Johnson City; two nephews, Roy Story, Arlington, Va., and Junior Drain, Jonesborough; and two nieces, Ruby Buchanan and Judy Jenkins, both of Johnson City.
Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, Johnson City.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the South Chapel of the funeral home with Dr. Reggie Weems and the Rev. Jim Richmond officiating.
Following the funeral service, family and friends will proceed to Roselawn Memory Gardens for committal services.

Charles Ray Fleenor, 56, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Charles Ray Fleenor, 56, went to be with the Lord Friday (Aug. 30, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Fleenor was born in Lynch, Ky., and made his residence in Kingsport since 1979. He was of the Baptist faith.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was also a retired Marine. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by is daughter, Cheryl Lynn Fleenor.
Surviving are his wife, Norma Fleenor; daughter, Patricia Salvo of Illinois; sons, Rick Fleenor of Kingsport, Ron Fleenor of Nashville and Chuck Fleenor Jr., of Illinois; parents, Roberta and Arthur Fleenor of Blountville; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchildren; brothers, Arthur Fleenor Jr. of Michigan, Harold Fleenor of Illinois, Wayne Fleenor of Blountville; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Michael Owens officiating.
Graveside services will be performed by the VFW Post #3382 on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.

Victor Gates Sr., 81, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Victor Gates Sr., 81, passed away Thursday (Aug. 29, 2002) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital.
He lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap, Va. He was a self-employed coal truck driver. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Anna Gates; and two brothers and one sister.
Surviving are his wife, Edith Gates; two daughters, Marion Victoria Gates Lewis and husband, Acey of Hinesville, Ga., and Evelyn Gates Bellet and husband, Randy, of Richmond, Va.; one son, Victor Gates Jr. and wife, Stephanie, of Big Stone Gap, Va.; four grandchildren, Meredith L. Lester, Colorado Springs, Colo., Desiree C. Gates, Wise, Va., Rachel Rebecca Bellet and Sarah Suzanne Bellet, both of Richmond, Va.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert Cornwell officiating.
Burial will follow in Glencoe Cemetery, Big Stone Gap, Va.
Pallbearers will be Acey Lewis, Tom Stanley, Patrick Arnold, A.C. Blevins, Doug Bishop and Don Clark.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Ward and Marvin Miller.

Bertie G. Haynes, 93, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Graveside services for Bertie Gladys Haynes, 93, who entered into rest Wednesday (Aug. 28, 2002) will be at 1 p.m. today at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. The family will be meeting at 12:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Cynthia Isenberg, 92, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Memorial service for Cynthia Muse Isenberg, 92, who passed away at 4 p.m. Monday (Aug. 26, 2002), will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating.
Music will be under the direction of the First Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Becky Kerns, 61, Duffield, Va.
DUFFIELD, Va. - Lovely ‘Becky' Lucy Shupe Kerns, 61, of the Mabe community, died Thursday evening (Aug. 29, 2002) at her residence after a long illness.
Born in Scott County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Myrtle Lowe Shupe. She was a homemaker and a member of Durham's Chapel Church and auxiliary and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Willie Mae Ryans, Mary Ellen Shupe and Janice Shupe.
Surviving are her husband, Johnny Kerns of Clinchport, Va.; a son, Stevie Kerns of Clinchport, Va.; sisters, Violet "June'' Jessee of Duffield, Va, Anna Ruth Sizemore of Stonega, Va., and Kathy Starnes of Clinchport, Va.; brothers, Gerald Shupe of Kingsport, Theodore "Sam'' Shupe of Fairview and James "Jim'' Shupe of Bluff City.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Ralph Begley and Terry Rhoton, ministers officiating.
Music will be provided by the Durham's Chapel Quartet.
Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Shepard Bowen Cemetery in the Mabe community.
Friends and neighbors will serve as pallbearers.

Alan Lady, 53, Fall Branch.
FALL BRANCH - Alan (Mark) Lady, 53, of 405 Bank Drive, died Thursday (Aug. 29, 2002) at his home of an apparent heart attack.
Born in Kingsport, he was a resident of Fall Branch most of his life and a veteran of the U. S. Army.
Mr. Lady was a member of First Baptist Church of Fall Branch.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carmel Lady (March 1999), his mother, Freddie Lady (Aug. 21, 2002); and his son, Marcus Winston Lady (March 1987).
Surviving are his brother and sister-in-law, Zane and Nancy Lady; and two nephews, David and Daniel Lady, all of Fall Branch.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Fall Branch Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Fall Branch Chapel with Rev. Ron Saffles, Rev. Andy Sensabaugh and Rev. E. W. Barnes officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Fall Branch Cemetery.

Helen Overbay, 89, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Graveside services for Helen Vincent Hubbard Overbay, 89, who died Thursday (Aug. 29, 2002) will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, today at 11 a.m. with the Rev. E.L. Scrantom officiating.

Della Parks, 83, York, Pa.
YORK, Pa. - Della Kathleen Parks, 83, formerly of Gate City, Va., entered into rest Thursday (Aug. 29, 2002) at Manor Nursing Home in York, Pa.

Daniel David Snyder, 90, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Daniel David Snyder, 90, departed this life at 1:40 a.m. on Friday (Aug. 30, 2002) at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.
Dan was born in Louisa County, Va. on Jan. 10, 1912. He came to Kingsport in 1932 and retired in 1974 after 41 years of service at Tennessee Eastman. He married Mary Ruby Lilly Snyder in 1939 and they spent most of their life together on their farm on Summerville Road in Colonial Heights. He was a dedicated gardener. He was a member of the First Broad Street United Methodist Church and was very active with the Men's Bible Class. For the past six years Dan and Ruby lived at Ashbury Center in Baysmont.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William David and Laura Ellen Emeline Long Snyder; nephew, Daniel Griffith whom he and Ruby raised and guardian Joseph Ramsey; two sisters, Ruth Jones and Laura Florence Wood; and one brother, Alfred Snyder.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ruby Lilly Snyder; daughter, Martha Snyder, New Market; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Carol Snyder, Knoxville; grandchildren, Joel and Claire; additional member of his adoptive family, The Ramseys of Pamplin City, Va.; nieces, Shirley Taylor, Billie Blankenbleckler and Bessie Pectol, all of Kingsport.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Weikel and the Rev. Jack Edwards officiating.
Graveside services will be at the conclusion of the service on Sunday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Kingsport.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Bible Class of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Myrtle Stacy, 61, entered into rest Friday (Aug. 30, 2002) at Mountain Home Veterans Hospital.

Jeanette Stone, 82, Bristol, Tenn.
BRISTOL, Tenn. - Jeanette Elizabeth St. John Stone, 82, died Thursday (Aug. 29, 2002) at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Bluff City, Tenn., a daughter of the late John St. John Sr., and Ola Hendrickson St. John. She was a graduate of Blountville High School, where she played on the girls basketball team.
She was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she was active as a Sunday school teacher, former president of the Ladies Auxiliary and with Meals on Wheels. She was a life member of the PTA, a long time member of the Walnut Hill Homemakers Club and president of the Blountville FCE. Her hobbies were quilting, traveling and gardening. She was retired from the Sullivan County Clerk's Office.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Paul E. Stone; three sons, Paul Stone Jr., Scottsville, N.Y., John Stone and George Stone, both of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister, Beatrice Parrott, Largo, Fla.; two brothers, John St. John Jr. and Marvin St. John, both of Lincoln University, Pa.; four beloved grandchildren, Thomas Stone, Fairport, N.Y., David Stone, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Michael Stone and Katrina Stone, both of Bristol, Tenn.; several cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. today in the chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn., with Dr. Edward Crook and Dr. Timothy E. Fulop officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
The committal service and burial will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Glenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1100 Windsor Ave., Bristol, Tenn. 37620.
