David Allen Bright, 33, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - David Allen Bright, 33, 573 Lenoir Rd., died at 10:41 a.m. Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at Johnson City Medical Center due to an accident.
A lifelong resident of Sullivan County (Kingsport), he was a 1987 graduate of Sullivan North High School. He was an avid NASCAR fan and a local race car driver, as well as a race track champion.
He was a very caring and talented young man and was loved by all who knew him.
He was employed at PuroFirst of Tri-Cities and attended Kingsport Baptist Temple.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ed and Gracie Doran Bright; and maternal grandparents, Hubert and Virginia Sims Graham.
Survivors include his parents, Carlos and Mary Graham Bright, Kingsport; daughter, Alison Bright, Kingsport; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Pamela Earles and husband Tim, Brenda Collier and husband Joe, April Bright and fiancé Michael Morelock, all of Kingsport; two brothers and sister-in-law, Raymond Bright, Nashville, and Robert Bright and wife Sheila, Kingsport; mother of his daughter and good friend, Vickie Wilhoit, Kingsport; four nieces, Alaina Earles, Jessica Taylor, Jennifer Taylor and Whitney Bright, all of Kingsport; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. Friends may call anytime at the residence of his parents, Carlos and Mary Bright, 528 Alcoa Drive, off of Lenoir Road.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Kingsport Baptist Temple with the Rev. Joe W. Byrd and Pastor Leland Salyer officiating.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in the Herman Church Cemetery (Gate City).
Pallbearers will be Richard Graham, Mike Ragsdale, Keith Ragsdale, Sam Hurd, John Fairbanks, Joe Earles, David Earles, Shad Graham and Fred Ragsdale.

Darrell Caudill, 56, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Cecil Darrell Caudill, 56, died Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at St. Mary's Hospital in Norton.
Born to the late Frances and Vestie Mae Caudill, he was a lifelong resident of Norton and Wise County. Mr. Caudill was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Vietnam War.
Surviving are two sons, Johnny Darrell Caudill and Jeffrey Lynn Caudill, both of Texas; a sister, Mary Burton, Norton, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hagy-Fawbush Funeral Home, Norton, Va.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel.
Graveside rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the White Oak Gap Cemetery on Thacker's Branch near Norton, Va.

KINGSPORT - Graveside services for Vance O. Clayton, 80, who passed away Tuesday (May 7, 2002), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion.

Art Crabtree, 82, Bristol, Tenn.
BRISTOL, Tenn. - Arthur "Art" Crabtree, 82, of Avoca Drive, died Wednesday (May 8, 2002) at his home.
Born in Tompkinsville, Ky., he had resided in the Tri-Cities area for a number of years.
He had worked as an auditor at several motels, hotels and resort areas throughout the southeast United States, including the Tri-Cities.
Mr. Crabtree was a Protestant.
His wife, Janette Danielson Crabtree; a brother, Grover Crabtree; and his parents, Fred and Oline Kidwell Crabtree preceded him in death.
Surviving are a special sister-in-law, Lucy Hincke, Kingsport; and several friends who loved him.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Suzanne N. Smitherman officiating. Those planning to attend should meet at the cemetery.
Friends will be received at the cemetery immediately following the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Wilson Dean, 89, Nickelsville, Va.
Services for Woodrow Wilson Dean, 89, Route 2, Nickelsville, Va., who entered into rest on Tuesday (May 7, 2002), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home with the Rev. G.W. White officiating.
Music will be provided by the church choir.
Burial will follow in the Dean Cemetery, Nickelsville, Va.

CHESTERTON, Ind. - Sonnia Lee Gentry, 65, died Monday (May 6, 2002) at her residence.
Born in Scott County, Va. on May 3, 1937, she was the daughter of Baker Bowen and Maxie Robins Bowen. She was employed as a laborer with Bethlehem Steel Corp. retiring in 1997 after 24 years of service.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa "Terry" Gentry on April 7, 2002; a sister, Henrietta Doughty; and a brother, Clifford Bowen.

Haskel Vernon Gilly, 74, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Haskel Vernon Gilly, 74, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at his residence.
Mr. Gilly was a lifelong resident of Wise County. He was a 30-year retired union coal miner and a member of UMWA Local No. 1355. He was a former employee of Pet Dairy Inc. of Big Stone Gap.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Woodway, Va.
Mr. Gilly was preceded in death by his father, John Gilly; and brother, Emory Gilly.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Doris "Dot" Gilly; sons, Steve and wife Charlotte Gilly, and Darryl and wife Debbie Gilly, both of Big Stone Gap; grandsons, Richard, Rodney, Jake, Luke and Justin Gilly; mother, Nellie Poole Gilly, Big Stone Gap; brothers, Johnny Gilly and Wade Gilly, both of Big Stone Gap; sisters, Nila Rines, Big Stone Gap, Anna Lee Gibson, Bloomingdale, Tenn., Audrey Meroney, North Carolina, Edna Gilly, Big Stone Gap; several nieces and nephews.

John Gregory, 104, Duffield, Va.
DUFFIELD, Va. - John Nathan Gregory, 104, died Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home in Duffield, Va.
He was born Feb. 23, 1898 in Russell County and was the son of the late Phillip Jackson Gregory and Mary Ann Harrison Gregory. He had resided in Honaker most of his life.
He was a member of the New Garden Baptist Church, Honaker, and was a 45-year employee of the Norfolk and Western Railway Company, retiring in 1963. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Angie Lenora Combs Gregory; four brothers; two sisters; a daughter-in-law, Eunice Myers Gregory; and a son-in-law, Richard T. McReynolds.
Surviving are three sons and a daughter, C. Gerald Gregory, Pickerington, Ohio, Harold N. Gregory, Richlands, Va., James R. Gregory, Lebanon, Va., and Sarah Love Gregory McReynolds, St. Paul, Va.; two daughters-in-law, Betty Jo Gregory, Richlands, Va., and Frances Hanson Gregory, Lebanon; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leeman C. Gregory, Honaker; a sister, Lola G. Conley, Kingsport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mabel Hash, 95, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Mabel Simonds Hash, 95, died at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at Indian Path Medical Center.
Born in Ducktown, Tenn., she lived in Kingsport most of her adult life. Mrs. Hash was formerly employed with Kingsport Press.
She enjoyed crafts and activities in the Garden Club for many years.
She was a life-member of Litz Manor Baptist Church and was also a member of Rebecca Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna Mae and Joe Thomas Simonds; husband of 61 years, Fred Scott Hash Sr.; sons, Fred Scott Hash Jr., and Donald Wayne Hash; a daughter, Ina Christine Hash; and three brothers, Guy Simonds, Wayne Simonds and Glen Simonds.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Charlene Hash Creech and Dick Creech, Knoxville; a sister, Helen Simonds Roller, Kingsport; grandchildren, Bo Creech, Knoxville, Debbie Hash, Donna Hash and DeDe Hash, all of Kingsport; great-grandchildren, Logan Creech, Knoxville, Peaches Hash, Molly Hash and Katie Bull, all of Kingsport; nephews, Larry Simonds, Kingsport, and Ken Simonds, California; nieces, Glenda Simonds Marrs, South Carolina, Joanna Roller Crawford and Judy Roller Sneed, both of Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Marjorie Kilgore, 77, went to be with the Lord 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at Indian Path Medical Center following an extended period of poor health.
Mrs. Kilgore was born in Sullivan County and had lived in the Kingsport area her entire life. She retired from Sears where she was in retail sales.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Kilgore was an avid Dobyns-Bennett sports fan and had been recognized for her support in sports.
She was a very devoted mother and grandmother and lived her life for her children and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry R. Kilgore Jr.; parents, Lonnie M. Wooten Sr. and Bridget Moffitt Wooten.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Susan Kilgore Monroe and husband Rev. John Monroe, Norfolk, Va.; three sons, Gary L. Kilgore and wife Reba, Richard M. Kilgore and wife Misti, and T. Steve Kilgore and wife Martha, all of Kingsport; eight grandchildren, Chad, Sarah, Emily, Matthew and Nick Kilgore, Sarah and Miles Monroe, Kristi Cano; one great-grandson, River Kilgore; one brother, Rev. Lonnie "Buddy" Wooten, Kingsport, and special sister-in-law, Lillian; and Aunt Madge Kilgore and Mildred Kilgore.

Alice Lyne, 90, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Alice Lyne, 90, died Wednesday (May 8, 2002) in Asbury Center at Baysmont Health Care Center after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
Born in New York City, she spent most of her childhood in Valentia Island, County Kerry, Ireland. She resided in New York City until moving to Kingsport in 1990.
She was a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church.
Mrs. Lyne was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Lyne.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary Lyne, New Jersey, Anne and George Zazana, Portland, Ore., and Chris and Marty Silver, Kingsport; one son, Thomas Lyne, New York, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Jacob, Rachel, Mary, David, Hannah and Sarah Silver; and the loving staff of Asbury Center at Baysmont Health Care Center.

CHURCH HILL - Brenda Louise Davis McClain, 57, went to be with the Lord Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at her home of an apparent heart attack.
Born in Kingsport, she had resided most of her life in Hawkins County. Ms. McClain was employed at A Place at Kingsport Assisted Living.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gaines and Ollie Davis; and one brother, Robert Davis.
Surviving are one daughter, Vickie McClain Sturgill and husband, Jeff, Kingsport; one son, Kelly McClain III, Stanley Valley; five grandchildren, Tad Sturgill, Jesse Sturgill, Jacob Sturgill, Kayleigh McClain and Lynsea McClain; two sisters, Stella Sensabaugh and Peggy Walls, both of Hawkins County; three brothers, Bill Davis and Garland Davis, both of Kingsport, and Claude Davis, Conyers, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, and anytime at the home of the daughter, Vickie Sturgill, 405 Fontana St., Kingsport.

George Pierson, 63, Derby, Kans.
DERBY, Kans. - George Curtis Pierson, 63, died Monday (May 6, 2002) at St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita, Kans.
Born December 14, 1938 in Kingsport, he was the son of Claude and Georgia (Frazier) Pierson. He married Joan Kindle on August 14, 1971 in Gate City, Va.
Mr. Pierson served with the U.S. Air Force for nearly 30 years, retiring as a senior master sergeant (SMSGT). He then worked as the athletic director at McConnell AFB in Wichita for five years.
He was preceded in death by one son, Mark Curtis Pierson on April 15, 1995; two brothers, Lewis Pierson and Benton Pierson.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Pierson of Derby; his daughter, Kristin (Mrs. Steven) Slagle of Derby; his mother, Georgia Bush, Salem, Va.; two brothers, Floyd W. Frazier of Austin, Tex., and Claude Pierson Jr. of Johnson City; two sisters, Claudia Larue Pierson of Aurora, Colo., and Helen Snyder of Knoxville; one grandson, Steven Michael Slagle II of Derby.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Smith Mortuary in Derby, Kans.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the North Woodlawn Baptist Church in Derby, with interment in the El Paso Cemetery in Derby.

KINGSPORT - Charles M. Shupe Jr., 79, went to be with the Lord Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at his residence after an extended illness.
Born in Dorchester, Va., he moved to Kingsport in 1953. He was employed at Mead Papers for 39 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lula Shupe; two sisters, Dorothy Griffin and Doxie Peaks; one brother, Frank Shupe.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Anna Lee Ramey Shupe, of the home; sons, Jim Shupe and Becky, Fall Branch, Steve Shupe, Nashville, Ron and Lela Shupe, St. Roberts, Md., and Chris Shupe, Kingsport; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Brickey, Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Glen Shupe, Melbourne, Fla.; several nephews and nieces.

Rachel Smith, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Mrs. Rachel Geraldine Smith was born April 20, 1914 in Hawkins County. She departed this life on Tuesday morning (May 7, 2002) after a lingering illness.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church for many years and was deeply committed to her church. She was a dedicated member of the Senior Missionary Circle of the church and served as the coordinator for the Card Ministry for several years. She was known affectionately by many as Mama Gene.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Zan Smith; three sons, Charles, Doyle and Alvin Smith; one daughter, Joan Smith; her parents, Fred and Katie Lee Charles; five sisters, Mrs. Willie Evans, Mrs. Bessie Smith, Ms. Sylvia Charles, Mrs. Minnie Posey and Mrs. Grace Richmond.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Beatrice (Le Roy) Turner, Mrs. Wanda McMiller and Mrs. Dorothea McMiller; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Itha Flack, Compton, Calif.; four grandsons and 11 granddaughters; 13 great-grandsons and 11 great-granddaughters; 14 great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Central Baptist Church.
The family will also receive friends anytime at the residences of Mrs. Wanda McMiller, 309 Carver Street, Kingsport, and Mrs. Dorothea McMiller, 312 Carver Street, Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Anthony Daniels officiating.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Joseph Steele, infant, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - Joseph Maurice Steele, infant son of Wesley and Crystal Steele, died Monday (May 6, 2002) at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Skylar Steele; and a twin sister, Jada Steele, both of the home; maternal grandparents, Lisa Hurley, Blountville, and David Gregg, Elizabethton; paternal grandparents, Manson and Angela Steele, Piney Flats; maternal great-grandparents, Isaac and Onedia Gregg, Bristol, and Frances and Jack Hurley, Virginia; paternal great-grandparents, Bob Lowe and Oma Steele, Mooresburg, Tenn.; two uncles, David Gregg II and Louis Steele; and one aunt, Chrissy Rought.
Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City Chapel.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday from the Leonard Cemetery, Bristol, with the Rev. Isaac Gregg officiating.
Active pallbearers will be chosen by the family.
