Billy Ray Ayers, 70, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Billy Ray Ayers, 70, died Thursday (July 11, 2002) at his residence in Norton.
He retired from the U.S. Army with more than 20 years of service. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis Morgan Ayers.
Surviving are five children in Germany; four stepdaughters, Judy Mefford, Mulberry, Fla., Cat Smith, Donna Cooper, both of Winter Haven, Fla., and Lois DeWolf, Siler City, N.C.; one stepson, Jimmy Ball, Winter Haven, Fla.; one sister, Mary Tate, Richmond, Ind.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Gary Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in the American Legion Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by Norton VFW Post 4301 and Wise DAV Chapter 56.

Sara Barlow, Bulls Gap.
BULLS GAP - Graveside services for Sara Harville Barlow, who passed away Monday (July 8, 2002), will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Highland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bulls Gap, 115 Church St., Bulls Gap, Tenn. 37711.
Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Eliza J. Carroll, 84, Mooresburg.
Services for Eliza J. Carroll, 84, 1380 Hwy. 31, Mooresburg, who died Thursday (July 11, 2002) will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Spruce Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Epps, the Rev. Dayton Lovin and the Rev. Billy Carroll officiating.
The body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church and other times at the home, 1380 Hwy. 31, Mooresburg.
Burial will be in the Lovin Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chad Crawford, Daniel Martin, Rodney Webb, Bobby Heck, Jason Carroll and Mark Carroll.
Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville is in charge of arrangements.

Lucy Myrtle Carter, 79, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Lucy Myrtle Carter, 79, went to be with the Lord Thursday evening (July 11, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born in Scott County and was a charter member of Community Fellowship Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and active on several church ministries. She was a former clerk at City Lock Shop.
She was preceded in death by her father, Willard Fields; mother, Belvia Hammond Fields; son, Doug Carter; brother, Jess Fields; and sister, Reatha Sams.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Mark Jenkins, Gate City, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Etta Carter, Grayslake, Ill.; daughter-in-law, Nancy Carter, Mount Carmel; sisters, Gladys Turner, Kingsport, Ellen Shelton, Weber City, Va., Emma Williams, Church Hill; granddaughter and husband, Deanna and Mark Russell, Mount Carmel; stepgrandson, Jody Repass, Franklin, Ind.; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home and anytime at the residence of the daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Mark Jenkins.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ewing Chapel on the Grounds of Community Fellowship Baptist Church, Gate City, Va., with Pastor John Sheppard officiating.
Judy McConnell will be the pianist and Bob Blackstock will be the soloist.
Burial will be in the Morison Cemetery in Rye Cove.
Pallbearers will be the deacons of Community Fellowship Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Community Fellowship Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1407, Gate City, Va.

Hazel Cookenour, 79, Kingsport.
Services for Hazel Juanita (Bates) Cookenour, 79, 637 Branch St., who went to be with the Lord at 8:30 a.m. Thursday (July 11, 2002) will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at Apostolic Lighthouse on Shipp Springs Road with the Rev. Billy Joe Lewis, the Rev. Dwayn K. Williams and the Rev. Ellis Crawford officiating.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church or anytime at the home.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Memorials may be given to Pentecostal Powerhouse, Route 1, Box 206, Gate City, Va. 24251.

Sherill Dorton, 63, Nickelsville, Va.
NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Services for Sherill Walter Dorton, 63, Route 1, who departed this life early Thursday (July 11, 2002) will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., with the Rev. Wrightly Salling and the Rev. L.W. Salling officiating.
Music will be by the Gethsemane Quartet.
Burial will be in Culbertson Family Cemetery, Route 1, Nickelsville, Va.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Sluss, Darrell Dougherty, Charles Finch, Carl Keith, C.E. Starnes and Ed Howard Broadwater.

Sandra Fraley, 60, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Sandra Sue Hughes Fisher Fraley, 60, died Thursday (July 11, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Leona Mines, Va., she had been a resident of Scott County, Va. most of her life. She was a homemaker, retired nurse and of the Pentecostal faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Burl and Virgie Hughes; five brothers, Wayne, Shorty, Jackie, Bobby and Bruce Hughes; first husband, Marlin Fisher and second husband, Wayne Fraley.
Surviving are her sons, Daniel Fisher and wife, Tressa of Rogersville and Gary Fisher of Rogersville; daughters, Suzy Bowen and husband, Lester of Pennington Gap, Va., Sandy Jones and husband, Jackie of Clinchport, Va.; six grandchildren; four brothers, Eugene Hughes of Morristown, Jimmy Hughes of East Lake, Ohio, Mike Hughes of Norton, Va., and Earl Hughes of Morristown; two sisters, Sissy Miller and Evelyn Lephew, both of Kingston, Ga.; and a loving friend, David Williams of Gate City, Va.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Province Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home sanctuary with Evangelist Garry Hood officiating.

Berchie Gray, 84, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Berchie Alexander Gray, 84, went peacefully to be with her Lord at 3:15 a.m. Friday morning (July 12, 2002) at the home of her daughter and surrounded by her family.
Berchie was born in Greenup, Ky. on Aug. 6, 1917 and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Julia (Eggers) Alexander. She was married to the late W.S. (William) Gray.
She was a member of the Lynn Garden Baptist Church, a gifted seamstress, loved crafts and crochet/knitting.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Letha Mullins and Wellmont Hospice for all of their help and caring.
In addition to her husband and parents a daughter, Deborah Gray Kerns; brothers, Vernon, Frank and Grant Alexander preceded her in death.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and Gene Archer, Becky and Gary McConnell, all of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Wendy Jones Bailey and Missy Jones Matlock; four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley, Grace Bailey and Hunter Matlock.
Calling hours are from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at East Lawn Funeral Home and anytime at the home of her daughter, Julia Archer.
Services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tommy Holtzclaw and the Rev. Gale Hartley officiating.
Entombment will be in the East Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Services for Elbert Vance Ireson Sr., 72, Kingsport, who died Thursday morning (July 11, 2002) will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, with Dr. Tim Perry officiating.

Harry Lackey, 56, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Harry B. Lackey, Jr., 56, passed away Thursday (July 11, 2002) at his residence.
A lifelong resident of Rogersville, he was employed with ball Corp. in Bristol.
Mr. Lackey attended Faith Assembly Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harry B. Lackey, Sr.; and mother, Mary Elizabeth Lackey.
He is survived by his wife, Loney Lackey of the home; son, Brice Lackey and wife Tracey of Rogersville; daughter, Betsy Hall of Nashville, Tenn.; granddaughter, Kori Lackey; stepgrandson, Jacob Boyd; sister, Janice Dodgin and husband Gary of Franklin, N.C.

She was a member of Esserville Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Fred Roach; one daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and Danny Stallard, Wise, Va.; two stepdaughters, Trecia McGuire, Blountville and Linda Roach, Big Stone Gap, Va.; her mother-in-law, Grace Roach, Big Stone Gap, Va.; and one brother-in-law, Dale Roach, Bethleham, Pa.
