Etta Alley, 97, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Etta Mae Alley, 97, of Route 1, Alley Valley community, departed this life and went home to be with Jesus, Monday (July 23, 2001).
She was a native of Scott County and a homemaker. She was a member of Alley Valley Methodist Church.
She was a very special mother, grandmother and her unending faith in God was an inspiration to all her family and others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Patton Alley; daughters, Sharon Delaine Alley Roberts, and an infant daughter, Lettie Jo Alley; parents, Christopher Columbus Greear Jr. and Matilda Jane Quillen Greear.
Surviving are her daughters, Etta Ellen Alley, Gate City, Mrs. E.S. (Jane) Quillen, Gate City, Va., and Betty Jo Peters, Kingsport; grandchildren, Douglas Quillen, Mrs. Larry (Loretta) Page, Mrs. Jack (Denise) Dockery, Leon Quillen, Mrs. Sam (Diana) Hylton, Mrs. Tony (Sherrie) Cannon, Robert Roberts and Joseph Roberts; great-grandchildren, Michael Page, Kristin Dockery, Stephen Craft, Staci Craft, Bryan Dockery, D'Lanie Cannon and Samantha Hylton; great-great-grandchildren, Brooke Page and Brett Page; sister, Maude Pendleton, Kingsport; brothers, Roy Greer and Elmer Greer, both of Kingsport; two nieces and two nephews.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. today at Spencer Cemetery (Alley Valley community).
The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Gordon Lynn Byrd, 62, Roanoke, Va.
ROANOKE, Va. - Gordon Lynn Byrd, 62, died Monday (July 23, 2001).
He was born Oct. 9, 1938 in Knoxville and was preceded in death by his parents, Ben H. Byrd and Virgie Byrd.
Mr. Byrd was a graduate of Oak Ridge High School and Lincoln Memorial University. He worked 31 years for Norfolk/Southern Railroad as a regional manager of claims.
Mr. Byrd was a member of Cave Spring United Methodist Church and was an avid golfer, who loved his family and friends and will be missed by all.
Surviving are his loving wife of 40 years, Joan Shipley Byrd; a son, Gregory Alan Byrd; a son and daughter-in-law, John Gordon "Chip" Byrd and Pamela Byrd; one daughter and son-in-law, Joly and Joe Marshall; five grandchildren, Leah and Rachel Byrd, Adam and Benjamin Byrd, and Hunter Marshall.
Calling hours were from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke, Va.
Services were conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Rick Geoghegan officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in East Lawn Memorial Park, Kingsport.
For those desiring, memorials may be made to the Cave Spring United Methodist Church, 4505 Hazel Drive, S.W., Roanoke, Va. 24018, or to the Special Olympics.

Dorothy Clendenin, 92, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Dorothy Clendenin, 92, went to be with our Lord Jesus on Tuesday (July 23, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
A native of Charleston, W.Va., she was a homemaker. While in Charleston, she resided in Agston Manor and came to live in Mount Carmel with her daughter, Nancy Allen, in October of 1999.
She attended Northside Church of the Nazarene and was a member of Nitro Church of the Nazarene.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Obie Clendenin; sons, Wesley Clendenin and Kenneth Clendenin; mother, Eura Stanley Saunders; brother, Roy Saunders; infant twin great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and a son-in-law, Dennis Akers.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Billie Jean Akers, Guthrie, Ky., and Mrs. Nancy Allen and husband George, Church Hill; sister, Mrs. C.G. (Gerri) Boothby, Bradenton, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bartlett Burdette Cox Funeral Home in Charleston, W.Va.
Services will be conducted a 3 p.m. Saturday at Northside Church of the Nazarene in Charleston, W.Va., with the Rev. Jerry Cline officiating.
Burial will be in the Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, W.Va.
Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is serving the Clendenin family.

Marie Cole, 59, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Services for Marie (Mimi) Cole, 59, 424 W. Main Street, who went to be with the Lord Tuesday (July 24, 2001), will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hermon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Raymond Amos and the Rev. Clifford Cole officiating.
Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.
Burial will follow in Webb Cemetery.
Her sons will serve as pallbearers.
Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown, is serving the Cole family.

Rev. Oscar Dorton, 84, Jasper, Va.
JASPER, Va. - Rev. Oscar C. "Tye" Dorton, 84, went to be with Jesus Tuesday (July 24, 2001) at his residence.
He was pastor at Jasper Central Baptist Church for 42 years, never missing a service unless he was sick. He retired from Holston Valley Community Hospital in 1980. He was a precious husband and a loving father who loved his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, James H. Dorton; his mother, Alice Stidham Dorton; four brothers, John, Jim, Truman and Charlie Dorton; three sisters, Florence Akers, Nora Wilson and Bessie Dinsmore.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Inez Shupe Dorton; one son and wife, Michael and Kim Dorton, Duffield, Va.; two daughters and husbands, Brenda and Harley Pearcy and Norma and Carson Fields, both of Clinchport, Va.; six grandchildren, Chris and April Dorton, Shane McElyea, Darrell Fields, Joseph Arwood and Jacob Arwood; one great-granddaughter, Shelby Alexandra McElyea; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Jasper Central Baptist Church with ministers Buddy Wilson, Wayne Thomas and T.J. Hood officiating.
Music will be provided by the Master's Own.
Burial will follow in Barker Cemetery in the Crackers Neck community.
Pallbearers will be Junior and Roger Shupe, Teddy Reist, Jimmy Lawson, Steve Shupe and Carl Rogers.

Elizabeth Glynn, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Elizabeth Padgett Glynn died Tuesday (July 24, 2001) at Asbury Center at Baysmont Health Center after an extended illness.
Born in Walterboro, S.C., she graduated from Coker College, did graduate work at Columbia University, and came to Kingsport in 1928 to work as an elementary school teacher.
She was a communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where she had served in the Ladies Auxiliary and as superintendent of the Primary Department. Mrs. Glynn did volunteer work with the Well Baby Clinic on Long Island and taught reading at the Palmer Memorial Center.
Her husband, Theodore William Glynn, and a daughter, Elizabeth Caldwell Glynn, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, T.W. (Bill) Glynn III, Kingsport; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and David Sowell, Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren, Ted Glynn, Colette George and Jenne Deason, all of Kingsport, Paul Sowell, New York, N.Y., Elizabeth Nordstrom, Austin, Tex., and David Sowell, Los Angeles, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Daniel P. Matthews Jr. officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 161 East Ravine Road, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Bill Harris, 67, Tampa, Fla.
TAMPA, Fla. - Services for Bill Harris, 67, formerly of Sullivan Gardens, who died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday (July 22, 2001) will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown, with Pastor Jerry Musick officiating.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will follow in Ball Cemetery.

Roy Lee "Pete" Holt, 65, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - Roy Lee "Pete" Holt, 65, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday (July 25, 2001).
Arrangements are incomplete.

Ray Massengill, 83, Kingsport.
Graveside services for Ray Walter Massengill, 83, 516 Massengill Drive, Kingsport, who died Monday (July 23, 2001), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jack O. Church, Thomas I. Hutchins, David Haynes Sr., David L. Haynes Jr., Chris Chambers and Jimmy Killen.
Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is in charge of the arrangements.

Bonnie McGuire, 63, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Bonnie Hutchins McGuire, 63, 1000 Gibson Mill Road, died Monday (July 23, 2001) at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County (Kingsport) and was a homemaker.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George W. Hutchins and Margaret Overbay Hutchins; and a daughter, Wanda McGuire Harden.
Surviving are a son, Samuel Kenneth McGuire Jr., Mountain City; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Hutchins, Ruth Jones and Connie Booker, all of Kingsport; brothers, Paul Hutchins, Joe Hutchins, Donnie Hutchins and Wayne Hutchins, all of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.
Graveside services will be conducted at noon today at Sullivan County Cemetery with the Rev. Joe W. Byrd officiating.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Bessie Neal, 93, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Bessie Neal, 93, departed this life Wednesday morning (July 25, 2001) at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.
She was a member of Beech Hill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Garley H. Neal; son, Ezra Neal; brother, Amos Dean; and sister, Drucilla Albright.
Surviving are four sons, Bob Neal, Laceys Spring, Ala., Virgil Neal, Rogersville, John B. Neal, Brownsboro, Ala., and Hubert Neal, Surgoinsville; one daughter, Geraldine Ward, Rogersville; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bertha Robinson, Greeneville; one niece and one nephew.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, and anytime at the residence of Hubert Neal, 115 Housewright Hollow, Surgoinsville.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the funeral home.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery.

Edward Prevette, 55, Bluefield, Va.
BLUEFIELD, Va. - Edward Prince Prevette, 55, 619 Quail Drive, died Monday (July 23, 2001) from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
Mr. Prevette was a Washington County, Tenn. native, and the son of the late C.E. and Ruth Talley Prevette.
He was a graduate of Science Hill High School in Johnson City and received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from ETSU.
Mr. Prevette served in the Tennessee Army National Guard from 1967-1973.
He retired in February 2001 from his position as a division manager for maintenance operation with Norfolk/Southern Railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio and Bluefield, W.Va.
Surviving are his wife, Karen Jones Prevette; three children, Lisa Eileen Prevette, Anthony Edward Prevette and Lauren Ann Prevette, all of the home; two sisters, Dani Prevette Messamore, Kingsport, and Laura Prevette Neff, Jonesborough; and several nieces, nephews and aunts.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society NE Office, 2513 Wesley Plaza Suite 4, Johnson City, Tenn. 37601.
A private graveside ceremony will be held at the Monte Vista Burial Park in Johnson City, Tenn. on Friday, July 27, 2001.

Blanche Small, 75, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Blanche Small, 75, died Wednesday morning (July 25, 2001) at her home after an extended illness.

Gordon S. Tomlinson, 74, Asheville, N.C.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Gordon Sayles Tomlinson, 74, of 8 St. Andrews Road, Arden, died Tuesday (July 24, 2001) at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.
A native of Bumcombe County, he was the son of the late John T. and Esther Tomlinson. He was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School, a retired employee with the National Data Climatic Center and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a former president and active member of the Cosmic Club since 1964 and was a member of the Cathedral of All Souls.
Surviving are two daughters, Holly T. Scheve, Johnson City, and Merry T. Hopson, Surgoinsville; two sons, John Lloyd Tomlinson, Roanoke, Va., and Christopher Andrew Tomlinson, Asheville; and six grandchildren.
His family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:45 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home, Asheville, N.C., with graveside services at 2 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Janice Walker will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville St. Mall, Two Hanover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, N.C. 27601.

John Wagner, 76, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - John (J.C.) Wagner, 76, 302 Royal Drive, passed away at his residence Tuesday morning (July 24, 2001).
He was employed with Tennessee Eastman Company for 37 years in the A.Y. Division.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lousia Griffin Wagner; seven sisters and four brothers; a grandson, Brian Neff, on March 16, 2001.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Kathryn Spears Wagner; one daughter, Barbara Neff, Miami, Fla.; one son, David Wagner, Kingsport; one granddaughter, Dawn Arnold, Kingsport; and one great-granddaughter, Kathryn MaKayla Arnold; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Bellamy, Murfreesboro, Mrs. Lillie Bell Adams, Amherstdale, W.Va., and Pheobe and husband, Albert Sackay, Kingsport; and one brother, Robert Wagner, Marietta, Ga.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va.
The family will also receive family and friends anytime at the home, 302 Royal Drive.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. J.W. Depew officiating.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holston View Cemetery.

Elizabeth L. Wright, 93, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Elizabeth L. (Lib) Wright, 93, 1520 Crescent Drive, died Monday evening (July 23, 2001) at her residence.
Mrs. Wright was a native of Rural Retreat, Va., and a proud graduate of Martha Washington College located in Abingdon, Va. She had resided in Kingsport since 1944.
Mrs. Wright was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport for over 50 years and was a member of the Kingsport Garden Club, the Junior Women's Guild of Kingsport, Holston Valley Hospital Auxiliary and the Virginia Club of Kingsport.
Her husband, Fred S. Wright and three sisters, Katherine Castles, Louise Gwyn and Marie Imboden, preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, James F. Wright and wife, Karen, of Kingsport and Charles S. Wright and wife, Ann, of Knoxville; three grandchildren, Peyton Wright, of Kingsport and Rachel and Adam Wright, of Knoxville; one niece and two nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Beth Yarborough officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Church Circle, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.
