Gladwin County, Michigan obits:

Alger B. Ruthig, 79, of Beaverton, died Monday, May 8, 2000 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland after a short illness.
Born Nov. 1, 1920 in Ubly, he lived in Gladwin County since 9177 and previously lived in Wayne.
Alger married Pauline Smith, Feb. 11, 1942 in Wayne. He was an auto mechanic and co-owner of Cliff and Al's Auto Repair, in Wayne, until 1977. He moved to Beaverton and began Al's Transmission until retiring in 1990.
Besides his wife he is survived by five sons, Garry and wife Rita of Highland Township, Tom and wife Lettie, and Chuck and wife Debbie, all of Brighton, Lonnie and wife Becky of Westland, and Jeff and wife Wendy of Pellston; four daughters, Sue and husband Ron Schroeder, and Fran Ruthig, all of Grand Rapids, Mary and husband Mike McClain of St. Clair Shores, and Jeanne and husband Gabe Couch of Beaverton; one son-in-law, Mike Dani of Canton Township; one brother, Douglas and wife Fran of Ohio; 23 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Dani, June 2, 1981.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Rev. Mark Sherfield officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin.
Memorial contributions may be made to be used according to the wishes of the family.

Charles A. Reid, 56, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was born in Gladwin.
He retired from Wickes Lumber in 1998 and was a U.S. Army veteran of the 101st Air Born Division. Charles was an avid outdoorsman and active firefighter with the Huntertown Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Diane of Huntertown, Ind.; three sons, James M. and Charles D.J., both of Huntertown, Ind., and Daniel of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one daughter, Janet Sellers of Huntertown, Ind.; one sister, Carol Brown of Gladwin; one brother, Randy Stone, of Gladwin; and 11 grandchildren.
Services were held at noon, Saturday, at the D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home. Burial was in Huntertown Cemetery, Huntertown, Ind. Memorials may be made to the Huntertown Volunteer Fire Department, Huntertown, Ind.

George Weaver, 79, of Gladwin, died Friday, May 5, 2000 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland after a short illness.
Born March 30, 1921 in Gladwin, he was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County.
George married Barbara Redman, Dec. 24, 1963 in Gladwin. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
He worked in insurance sales for American Family Life Assurance Company, from 1977 until the time of his death. Previously, George was employed as a farm implement mechanic at Woods Implement in Gladwin for 32 years until 1977.
He was a member of the Gladwin Eagles Club, Aerie 3292, and the Gladwin County VFW Post 7303.
Besides his wife he is survived by four sons, Kim and wife Molly Hobbs of Palmer, Ark., Patrick Weaver, Joe Hobbs, and Matthew Weaver, all of Gladwin; four daughters, Wendy and husband Henry Miller of Harrison, Selena Ford, and Jill and husband Leonard Witkowski, all of Gladwin, and Kellie and husband Jeff Beaton of Traverse City; two brothers, Roland of Midland and Howard of Northville; three sisters, Margaret Noble and Beatrice Caffrey, both of Gladwin, and Betty Sheehan of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Rev. Donald Potter officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gladwin Athletic Association.

John L. Peterson, 53, died Monday, May 1, 2000 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 16, 1946 in Gladwin, he was the son of Ralph and Edith (Rosevear) Peterson.
He was employed by Detroit Edison in Ann Arbor for 31 years.
John married Mary Osborne in Ann Arbor.
Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Mark of Ann Arbor; one daughter, Kristin Peterson of Austin, Texas; one brother, Ray and wife Florence; one niece, Debbie and husband John Bailer; and one nephew, Roy and wife Sandy Peterson.
In accordance with John's wishes, no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Washtenaw or the Humane Society of Huron Valley.

Norman R. Miller, 75, of Gladwin, died Thursday, May 4, 2000 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland after a long illness.
Born Dec. 31, 1924 in Mohawk, he was the son of Emil and Lydia (Anderson) Miller. He lived in Gladwin County since 1972 and previously lived in Plymouth.
Norman married the former Della Miller, July 31, 1948 in Monroe. He was a job setter for Burroughs Corp in Plymouth, retiring in 1970 after 24 years.
He was a member of UAW Local 1313 in Plymouth.
Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Phil and wife Joan, and Edward and wife Amy, all of Gladwin, and Robert and wife Marcele of Beaverton; three daughters, Darlene and husband Louis Freeman of Beaverton, and Denise and husband Mark Hall and Deanna and husband Darrell Day, all of Gladwin; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Rev. Robert Marshall officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to be used according to the family.

Annabel D. Crane, 73, of Beaverton, died Saturday, May 6, 2000 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Gladwin following a long illness.
Born Aug. 3, 1926 in Indiana, she lived in Gladwin County since 1989 and previously lived in Redford Township.
Annabel married Lewis Crane, Sept. 2,1 1987 in Redford Township. She worked as an auto parts inspector for Selestemer Corp. in Farmington, retiring in 1989.
Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters, Judy McDaniel of Livonia, Carol and husband Brad Lane of Alabama, and Roxanne Donner of Indianapolis, Ind.; four sons, Jerry and wife Ellen McDaniel of Arkansas, Ronald and wife Bernice McDaniel of New Mexico, Donald and wife Therese McDaniel of Beaverton and Ricky and wife Brenda McDaniel of Brighton. She was preceded in death by one son, Gary McDaniel, Sept. 24, 1998; one brother; and one sister.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin. Burial will be in Midland Memorial Garden, Midland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
