1942 - 2001
Hayden Edward James, 59, 110 Winterhills Drive, died June 8, 2001.
A native of Portsmouth, VA., he was the son of Eleanor Arleen Lucas James, and the late Edward O'Neal James. He was retired from the military, having served two tours in Vietnam and had received the Purple Heart award twice. He was a member of Winterville Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. from the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, EAST. Rev. Clifton Barrett will officiate. Interment will be in Arington National Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of LZ Friendly and V.A.-P.T.S.D. Clinical Team and Group Members.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Reddick James, Winterville; 2 sons, Jeremy E. James and Darin M. James, both of Winterville. 1 brother, Edward O'Neil James, Jr., Savannah; 4 sisters, Harriett Catherine Gonzalez, Tampa, FL.; Cheryle Sharon Lee, Comer; Arleen Eleanor James, Abilene, KS.; Debbie Lee Kirkpatrick, Tampa.

Ovenia M. Johnson
1915 - 2001
Athens, GA
Ovenia M. Johnson, of 175 Boulevard, died May 21, 2001.
A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Will and Gussie Akins Martin. She was a homemaker and a member of West End Baptist Church and the Whitworth Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at 2:00 PM at West End Baptist Church with Revs. Larry Elliott and Lee Hunter officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Mrs. Johnson will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00 PM.
Pallbearers will be Ken Skelton, Robert Poole, Larry Autry, Don Pass, Pete Dills and Ray Finger.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Whitworth Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her husband, James Johnson; Daughters, Betty Johnson and Pat Penny; Son in law, Dennis Penny; Granddaughter, Erica Penny; Grandson, Chris Penny; Sister in law, Lois Brawner; Brother in law, Johnny Brawner, all of Athens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Tommie Lee Jones
1917 - 2001
Tommie Lee Jones, 84, of Athens passed away Saturday, October 6, 2001.
A native of Spray, NC, Mr. Jones was a son of the late Ulrich and Teressa Shockley Jones. He was a retired Baptist minister, having served at Winterville Baptist Church, Plains Baptist Church, Center Baptist Church, and Corinth Baptist Church. He was a Boy Scout leader during his time in Plains, GA.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock on Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Richard McFall officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Rice Jones, Athens; two brothers, Louis Jones, Burlington, NC, Lawson Jones, Eden, NC; one sister, Mildred Cassell, Eden, NC; three sisters-in-law, Mary Cleveland, Gainesville, Sue Harris, Athens, Kathryn Dreher, Mystic, CT; and a brother-in-law, Major B. Rice, Sr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or charity of your choice.

Greta Kleiner-Berryhill
1961 - 2002
Athens, GA
Margaret Shippen Kleiner-Berryhill, 40, known as "Greta" to family and friends throughout her life, died February 24, 2002.
A native of Chicago, IL, she was a daughter of Scott Alter and Heather Smith Kleiner of Watkinsville. After attending Agnes Scott College for a year, she earned a diploma of Graphic Design from the Portfolio Center of Atlanta. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts and began a career in Space Planning and Interior Design. She designed for several national firms, including Kuppenheimer's, Atlanta, and Federated Department Stores, Cincinnati. A talented musician, Mrs. Kleiner-Berryhill sang with several bands in the Athens area in the 1980s, including Deep Step, Street Dancers and Beaulah Rose.
Memorial services will be Sunday, March 3, 2002 at 6:00 PM at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens, 780 Timothy Road, with The Rev. Terre Balof officiating. A reception will be held following the service. Interment will be scheduled later in the spring at the Indian Hill Church Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH.
Survivors in addition to her parents, include her husband, Darrell R. Berryhill; Step-daughter, Kayla Marie Berryhill of Palm Springs, CA; Sister, Catherine B. Kleiner of Albuquerque, NM; Uncle, Eugene Shippen Kleiner of Cincinnati. She was predeceased by grandmother, Margaret Shippen Kleiner of Cincinnati.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Family Counseling Service, 1435 Oglethorpe Avenue, Athens, Ga, 30606 or Drums for Success, c/o Dr. Arvin Scott, 150 Chadd's Walk, Athens, Ga, 30606 or a tree may be planted in Greta's memory.

Donald Lang
Athens, GA
Donald Headdon Lang, 75, died April 23, 2002.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Frederick Joseph and Grace Collard Lang.
A 1949 graduate of Lehigh University and member of Sigma Chi, he was president of the family business, Lang Lumber, Inc for many years. He served as Sr. Vice President and Financial Consultant with Merrill Lynch in Vero Beach, FL from 1978 until 1995. A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Lang served in the Pacific Theatre, including Okinawa and Hiroshima during the final years of WW II. Mr. Lang was active in Learning in Retirement and had a lifelong interest in trains and boating. He was a collector of European model trains and was an avid traveler and artist.
Memorial services will be Saturday, May 4, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Frances Lang; Children, Peter Lang and Jennifer Lang of Athens, Dorian Lang Lauto of Boynton Beach, FL and Donald Lang, Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren, Joseph of Athens, Christine, Joe, Renata, Sara and Michael; Christine and Justin, all of FL.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.

Cynthia Lawrence
Cynthia Agnes Stewart Lawrence passed away Tuesday, March 04, 2003, at Charlotte, NC. She was born at Fort Bragg, NC on May 2, 1948. She grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and made moves with her U.S. Army family to Germany, Ft. Benning, Georgia, Atlanta, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Ribault Senior High in Jacksonville, Florida. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated from Georgia State University.
She became a Certified Public Accountant and controller for Byers Engineering in Atlanta. She loved animals, music and reading. She was a fragile and gentle soul, smart and funny, and will be missed by her family and friends.
Cynthia is survived by her mother, Ruby Spratlin Stewart, her sister, Janice Marilyn Stewart, her brother, William Jerry Stewart and his wife, Paige Murray Stewart, all of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8 at 11:00 AM at Hull Baptist Church in Hull, GA with burial in the church cemetery immediately following the service.
Memorials in Cynthia's memory may be made to Northpoint Community Church, 4350 North Point Parkway, Alpharetta, GA 30005 or Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th St, Charlotte, 28204.

Era Ledford

Era Ledford, 96, died December 30, 2001.
A native of Clarke County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Evans Hill and widow of Eddie Ledford. She was retired from Thomas Textile and was a member of Whitehall Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 2, 2001 at 12:00 Noon at Lord and Stephens Chapel, EAST with Rev. Buford Lockman officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Leon Whitehead, Edward Seabolt, Jack Evans, James Drake, Charles McGalliard and Gerald Maddox.
Survivors include a daughter, June Lazenby of Augusta; 2 sons, Jimmy Ledford of Winterville and Eddie Elbert Ledford of El Paso, TX; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Julia Lord
1901 - 2001
Watkinsville, GA
Julia Jones Lord, 100, died August 6, 2001.
A native and lifelong resident of Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Abe and Nancy (Tannie) Malcom Jones and the widow of Robert Otha Lord. She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters and granddaughter, Jan Dawson. Mrs. Lord was a lifetime member of Union Christian Church.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Union Christian Church with Rev. Keith Weekley officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bob Dickens, Doug Dickens, Mark Dawson, Larry Allen, Henry Lord and Montgomery Shelnutt.
Survivors include her children, Charlotte and Ruhl Dawson of Watkinsville and Neal and Ann Lord of Bishop; Grandchildren, Randy and Jeannie Dawson, Ron and Nan Deal and Mickey and Karen Smith; Great-grandchildren, Lauren Deal and Ryan Smith and a large number of nieces and nephews.

Esco Long
1913 - 2001
Athens, GA
Esco "Papa" Long, 88, of 405 Holman Avenue, died Friday, September 21, 2001 after a brief illness.
Mr. Long was a native of Rabun County and had resided in Clarke County for the last 65 years. He was a retired brick mason, employed by the University of Georgia, and was a lifetime member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen. He was a member of West End Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years and was affectionately known as "Papa" Long.
Services will be Sunday, September 23, 2001 at 3:00 PM at West End Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Elliott officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will the deacons and the Alpha Sunday School Class of West End Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Vinson Long of Athens; Daughter and son in law, Teressa and Melton "Smiley" Schultz of Winterville; Son and daughter in law, Melton and Rea Long of Athens; Grandchildren, Phyllis and Ray Ginn of Watkinsville, Jimmy and Kathy Schultz of Comer, Randy and Tanya Long of Danielsville and Tracy Long of Athens; Great grandchildren, Renee Ginn of Watkinsville, Maggie and Billy Mauldin of Statham; Great great grandchild, Will Mauldin of Statham and several nieces and nephews.
Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church, 890 Boulevard, Athens, GA, 30601.
The family is at the home of Teressa and Smiley Schultz, 1300 Athens Road, Winterville, and will receive family and friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Ethel Logan
1907 - 2001
Athens, GA
Sarah Ethel Logan, 94, died December 5, 2001 in Sun City West, AZ. A native of Crawfordville, GA, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Mamie Lou Nash Sherrer and widow of Joseph Harley Logan. A longtime resident of Athens, Mrs. Logan was a retired teacher and member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, WEST with Rev. Bill Ricketts officiating. Interment will be in Phillips Mill Church Cemetery, Wilkes County.
Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Gerald L. and Barbara West of Surprise, AZ; 2 stepsons and spouses, James Feldman and Frances Logan of Decatur and Joseph Clayton and Pat Logan of Boone, NC; Sister, Marcia Griffith Long of Athens; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, niece, Pricilla Maxwell and 2 nephews, Dewey Johnson and Charle Sherrer.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday at 10:00 AM.
