Mitchell Marc Shapiro, 48, of Miamis Road, West Hartford, died Wednesday, October 5, 2005. Born in Hartford, he was the son of Elynore (Sigmond) Shapiro of West Hartford, and the late Harold M. Shapiro. Besides his mother, he leaves a son, Stephen Shapiro of Rocky Hill; a daughter Abagayle Shapiro of West Hartford;a grandson Elijah Shapiro; and two brothers: Scott B. Shapiro and Leigh H. Shapiro and his wife Malena, all of West Hartford; as well as a devoted aunt: Dorothy H. Shapiro. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 7, 2005 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. Interment will follow in the Beth Jacob Society Cemetery, West Hartford. A private period of mourning will be observed by the family. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Frances (Slavkin) Weil
Frances (Slavkin) Weil, 75, of Mills Lane, Bloomfield, widow of William Weil, died Thursday, October 6, 2005. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Esther (Dember) Slavkin. She was a Cigna employee for over 20 years. She leaves a daughter, Barbara Terry and her husband Peter of East Hartland; two grandchildren: Veronica Terry and Paul Terry and his wife Cindy; two great grandchildren; and a brother, Seymour Slavkin of Irving, CA. A graveside funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2005 at 12:30 pm in the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, Wolcott Rd., East Granby. Rosetta (Ginsburg) Freeman
Rosetta (Ginsburg) Freeman of 10 Westview Drive, Bloomfield, wife of Martin S. Freeman, died Friday, October 7, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Rockville, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Dora (Sosensky) Ginsburg. She taught in the Hartford Public School System for many years until her retirement in 1979. She leaves two sons, Edward Freeman and his wife Shari of West Hartford, and Alan Freeman and his wife Brenda of Livingston, NJ. She also leaves four grandchildren: Jonathan Freeman of Brighton, MA, Nina Bieler and her husband Daniel of The Bronx, NY, and Emily and Andrew Freeman of Livingston, NJ. She also leaves two sisters, Lillian Ginsburg of West Hartford, and Pearl Jacobson and her husband Jack of West Hartford, and a sister-in-law Selma Ginsberg of Queens, NY. She was predeceased by her brother Jacob I. (Jesse) Ginsberg. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2005 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford with Rabbi Yitzchok Adler officiating. Interment will follow in the Beth David Synagogue Cemetery, Wethersfield. Because of the Yom Kippur Holiday, an abbreviated shiva period will be observed at her home until Wednesday morning, October 12. Hyman L. Moore
MOORE, Hyman L. Moore, 80, of Avon and Boynton Beach, FL, formerly of New Britain died Saturday, October 8, 2005 at New Britain General Hospital. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Louis and Yetta (Honeyman) Moore. He served in the US Merchant Marines during World War II. Mr. Moore was the retired owner of Moore Medical in New Britain, formerly H.L. Moore Drug Exchange, which he founded in the early 1950's. He was a member of Temple B’nai Israel of New Britain and served on its Board of Trustees for 40 years. He was also a member Congregations Tephereth Israel of New Britain and B’nai Jeshurun of New York, NY. Mr. Moore was a Life Director of the Greater Hartford Jewish Federation and had also served on its Endowment Fund Board. He was a Corporator of the Hospital for Special Care, New Britain General Hospital, and the Boys and Girls Club of New Britain. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Sylvia (Axelrod) Moore; two daughters, Betsy Joseph and her husband Vincent of Medfield, MA and Sara Litt and her husband Dr. Andrew Litt of New York, NY; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Joseph, Michael Joseph, David Litt and Rebecca Litt. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 9, 2005 at 3:30 PM in Temple B’nai Israel, 265 West Main Street, New Britain with Rabbis Ronald Kaplan and Marshal Press officiating. Interment will follow in Beth Alom Cemetery, New Britain. Due to the holiday of Yom Kippur an abbreviated Shiva will be observed at his home, 6 Hounds Chase, Hunters Run, Avon, Sunday following the funeral through Wednesday morning. Beatrice Schwolsky Hoffman
Beatrice Hoffman of West Hartford, beloved daughter of the late Benjamin and Hattie (Ziskin) Schwolsky, beloved wife of the late Jack Hoffman and beloved sister of the late Faye Schwolsky, died Sunday morning at the age of 88 at the Hebrew Home and Hospital. As a young woman, she wanted to become a nurse, and since Hartford nursing schools denied admission to Jewish women, she went to Temple University in Philadelphia for her training. She worked as a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford and then as a school nurse in the West Hartford Public Schools. She was proud of her large family and extremely devoted to them. She was active in the American Jewish Congress, the Sisterhood of the Emanuel Synagogue, Hadassah and the Association of Jewish Nurses. She was passionate about the game of bridge and played enthusiastically with her many friends until the last month of her life. Friends and family were always welcome at her home of 45 years on Ballard Drive in West Hartford. She is survived by her sister, Helen Feingold of Scottsdale, AZ; four children: Harriet Hoffman of San Francisco, CA; Daniel Hoffman and his wife Lisa of San Diego, CA; Joshua Hoffman and his wife Ruth of Greensboro, NC; and Susan Hoffman Fishman and her husband Robert Fishman of West Hartford; eight beloved grandchildren: Jonathan Hoffman and his wife Tracey; Deb Hoffman and her partner Lisa Tilis; Noah Hoffman and his wife Karen, Betsy Crimmins; David Hoffman, Amy Hoffman, Benjamin Fishman and Gabriel Fishman; three great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral Services will be held TODAY, Monday, October 10 at 1:30 pm. in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford. Due to the holiday of Yom Kippur, an abbreviated shiva will be observed at the home of her daughter Susan following the funeral and on Monday and Tuesday. M. Diane Prince
M. Diane (Goldschlager) Prince, 77, of West Hartford, died peacefully after fighting a courageous battle with ovarian cancer for six years on Saturday (October 8, 2005) with her loving family and dear friends surrounding her at the Hebrew Home and Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, Diane was the daughter of Sadye and John Jay Crone and lived for many years in Bloomfield and West Hartford. Diane was the quintessential Renaissance woman. She had many careers but her life was mainly devoted to her family and to her volunteer work in Jewish and community organizations. Diane served as President of the National Council of Jewish Women - Hartford Section and on many national committees as well, and was proud that she attended the 100th anniversary of the NCJW at their convention in Chicago. She was awarded the honor of the Hannah G. Solomon Woman of the Year Award for Outstanding Community Service in 1978 by the NCJW. Diane was also the President of the Hebrew Home and Hospital Auxiliary from 1987-89. The Greater Hartford Jaycees named Diane Volunteer of the Year in 1988. In 1991, she was elected President of the National Organization of Associated Auxiliaries of Jewish Homes for the Aged. In 1993, AAJHA honored Diane in recognition of her commitment to the education and training of volunteer leadership and professional staff. Diane served on and was an Honorary Life Member of the Board of the Hebrew Home and Hospital and Hebrew Health Care in addition to serving on the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford. Diane is survived by her daughter Beth (Goldschlager) Robin and her husband Steven Robin of West Hartford; her son, George Schaler and his wife Barbara Schaler of East Longmeadow, MA; her daughter Leslie Schaler of Amherst, MA; her daughter Susann (Goldschlager) Riedel and her husband Peter Riedel of Winchester; her daughter Robin Goldschlager of Niantic, and her son Jim Goldschlager and his wife Jodi Pimentle of West Hartford. Diane is also survived by her grandchildren: Sharon, Christopher, Benjamin, Marissa, Lindsey, Katelyn, Spencer, Jennifer, Kristen, Michael, Mackenzie, and Mason as well as two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husbands, Maurice Goldschlager and Stuart Prince. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 12, at 12 Noon in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. Due to the Yom Kippur Holiday, abbreviated calling hours will be observed at her home, 576D Mountain Rd., West Hartford, following the services until sundown. Goldie (Zenner) Gold
GOLD, Goldie R. (Zenner) Gold, 92, of Fuller Dr., West Hartford died Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at the Hebrew Home and Hospital. She was the widow of Louis Gold. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Solomon and Bessie (Seidenwurm) Zenner. She leaves three sons, Stephen M. Gold and his wife Patricia of Bainbridge Island, WA and Kona, HI, Richard Gold and his wife Kathy of South Windsor, and Terrence Gold of East Hartford; two daughters, Donna Winick of Boynton Beach, FL and Cynthia Gold of Amsterdam, The Netherlands; grandchildren, Stephen Winick and his wife Christina, Beth Winick, Lauren Gold, Lisa Gold, Louis Gold, and Rachel and Richard Maney; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 14, 2005 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Yitzchok Adler officiating. Hersh Bobrow
BOBROW, Hersh Bobrow, D.D.S., 90, of Key Biscayne, FL and Westbrook died Saturday, October 15, 2005. Born in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Frank and Tillie (Ginsberg) Bobrow. He grew up in Hartford and lived in West Hartford and Stannard Beach, Westbrook. Currently he resided in Key Biscayne, FL and Westbrook. He was a Lieutenant Senior Grade Officer in the U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and Temple University Dental School in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Bobrow did an internship at the former City Hospital in Hartford. He practiced dentistry in Hartford and Bloomfield for over 45 years before he retired. Dr. Bobrow was a past president of the Hartford County and Connecticut State Dental Societies. He was a member of the former Level Lodge No. 137 A.F. & A.M., Clinton Country Club, and the Key Biscayne Golf and Tennis Association. Dr. Bobrow was a founding member of Beth El Temple of West Hartford. He leaves his wife of 65 years, Raelea (Shenker) Bobrow; three daughter, Nancy Gitlin and her husband Richard of West Hartford, Donna Forsyth and her husband Robert of University Park, FL, and Jill Bobrow of Warren, VT; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Gitlin and his wife Carolyn, David Gitlin and his wife Stephanie, Michael Gitlin and his wife Kris Anne, Alexa Forsyth, and Sabrina Stedman; nine great-grandchildren, Alexander, Melissa, Jack, Wyatt, William, Joseph, Sophie, Samantha and Maxwell Gitlin; two sisters-in-law, Helen Shenker of FL, and Marlene Warner and her husband Sanford of CA; several nieces and nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Aaron Bobrow, by his sister, Sarah Weinstein and by a son-in-law, William Stedman. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 16, 2005 with interment in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon. Due to the holiday of Sukkot, an abbreviated Shiva will be observed through Monday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Nancy Gitlin, 31 Mountain Farms Rd. West Hartford. Eva Ertman Katz
KATZ, Eva (Ertman) Katz, 87, of West Hartford, widow of Merrill Katz, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Hartford, the daughter of the late Abraham and Lena (Eisenberg) Ertman, she was a life-long resident of the Greater Hartford area. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Ross of Bloomfield, and her son, Alan Katz of Avon. She is survived by her cherished grandchildren, Lee and Doreen Ross of West Hartford, Captain Gary Ross of Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Steve and Angela Ross of West Monroe, LA, Rachel Katz and Paul Demaida of Bristol, Danielle Katz of Simsbury and Jennifer Katz of Avon. She was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, David and Marc Ross. Eva will also be missed by her loving friend Grace Freedman of West Palm Beach, FL. She was predeceased by her brother, Benjamin Ertman, her sister, Dorothy Sisitzky, and her son-in-law, Melvin Ross. Her family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Scheuster Christie for his overwhelming care and support during this most difficult time. As was Eva’s wish, interment was private. Lindsey Ziplow (Finkle) Forman
Lindsey Ziplow (Finkle) Forman, 27, of McKinney, TX, formerly of West Hartford, died tragically, on Monday, (October 17, 2005). She was born September 7, 1978, in Hartford. Lindsey grew up in West Hartford, attended Hall High School, and earned an Associates Degree in Surgical Technology, from Manchester Community College. She loved children, and worked at Noah's Ark Child Care Center at The Congregation Beth Israel. She leaves her husband David Forman, her parents, Paul and Susan Ziplow Finkle, and siblings, twin brother Michael J. Finkle, and Daniel E. Finkle. She is also survived by her husband's loving family, parents, Sam and Liberta Forman, and sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Jason Green. She is loved by her grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She will be missed beyond words. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Weinstein Mortuary. Services will be held on Thursday, October 20, at 1 p.m. at The Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford. Following the service, interment will be at Beth Israel Cemetery, Avon. The family will receive visitors at the home of Susan and Paul Finkle, 13 Farmington Chase, Farmington, through Sunday evening. Evelyn Sherry
Evelyn Sherry, 92, of Ocean Avenue, West Haven, formerly of West Hartford, died Thursday, October 20, 2005. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Myer and Sarah (Feldstein) Sherry. She was a former member of Beth David Synagogue, West Hartford, a Life Member of Hadassah, a member of the American Jewish Congress, and of the AMC Cancer Research Center. She leaves two nieces: Susan Burstein and her husband Herbert, Marjorie Weber and her husband Charney; a nephew: Michael Osber and his wife Lynn; two grandnephews and a grandniece. She was predeceased by two brothers: Harold and Israel Sherry, and her sister Pearl Osber. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2005 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford with interment in the Teferes Israel Cemetery, Merline Ave., West Hartford. Charles B. Schepart
Dr. Charles Barry Schepart, 54, who worked 18 years for the Los Angeles Unified School District, died suddenly October 18, 2005, of natural causes. Mr. Schepart was born March 14, 1951, in Hartford, the son of Howard and Goldie (Greenberg) Schepart. He graduated from Windsor Locks High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Political Science from Clark University, Worcester, MA. He later received a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Mr. Schepart worked as a Municipal Management Assistant for the Town of West Hartford, for the years 1975 to 1980. He then returned to California to obtain a Doctor of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 1984. He is survived by his father, Howard Schepart and his wife Florence Cohen Schepart of Windsor. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Newman and her husband William of West Hartford, and 2 nephews, David Newman of Manchester, and Michael Newman of Bloomfield. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 24, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave, Hartford, with interment in the Colchester Jewish Aid Cemetery, Colchester. Gertrude (Slipchinsky) Stepakoff
Gertrude (Slipchinsky) Stepakoff, of Abrahams Blvd., West Hartford, widow of Samuel Stepakoff, died Sunday (October 23, 2005). She was a member of the Pioneer Women's Organization. She is survived by a son, Joel Stepakoff and his wife Elaine of Dunwoody, GA; five grandchildren: Mark, Susan, Jeffery, Michael and Scott Stepakoff and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Dr. Gerald Stepakoff. Funeral services will be TODAY, 3 p.m. at the Hebrew Merchants Association Cemetery, Garden St., Hartford, with Rabbi Philip Lazowski officiating. The family will receive friends at the Home of Ruth Sloate, 1 Malone Dr., Bloomfield, through Tuesday. Ben Silverstein
Ben Silverstein, 102, of West Hartford, formerly of Bloomfield, the son of the late Boris and Anna Silverstein, and the husband of the late Sarah Silverstein, passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2005 at the Hebrew Home and Hospital, where he had been a resident since April 2004. Born in Rumania on May 13, 1903, he came to the United States when he was six months old. He lived most of his life in New York City where he worked as a distribution manager at the Superior Linen Company until his retirement at the age of 65. He then enjoyed his part time work at the Simmons Mattress Company. Ben was a writer of poetry. An ode to his late wife, Sarah, was published in ““Songs on the Wind””. For his 90th birthday, a collection of his poems was put into book form, along with many family photos, by his granddaughter Francine. He also enjoyed collecting coins and stamps. Ben loved to tell jokes, and could rattle off a dozen at a time. People marveled at how he always remembered the punch lines that most of us forget. People will remember Ben most for his friendly manner, cheerfulness, and optimistic attitude toward life. He is survived by two daughters, Celine Friedberg of Monroe Township, NJ, and Korine Ferraro and her husband Ronald of Bristol, CT. He also leaves five grandchildren –– Bruce Friedberg and his wife Madelyn Baran of Novato, CA, and Harwin Friedberg and his wife Diane of Auburn, CA, Judith Friedberg of New York City, Francine Ferraro Rothkopf and her husband David of Ashland, MA, and Melissa Ferraro-Borgida and her husband Adam, of Farmington, CT. In addition, he leaves five great-grandchildren –– Hannah and Julia Borgida, and Samuel, Micah and Sofia Rothkopf. Ben also leaves two sisters, Claire and Yetta Silverstein, in New York City. Funeral services will be held at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Fairview, NJ. Shiva will be observed at the home of his daughter, Korine Ferraro, 40 Northwestern Drive, Bristol, on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. Eugene J. Goodman
Eugene "Gene" J. Goodman, died Wednesday, (April 19, 2006) at his home in Bloomfield. He was born June 6, 1928, in The Bronx, NY, the son of the late Isidore and Esther Blagman Goodman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Bennigsen Goodman; son Russell J. Goodman; step children Thomas E. Zemon and Stacy J. Zemon; and his sister Edna Wilcove. Gene is predeceased by his first wife Rita “Rene” Miller Goodman and brother Lawrence H. Goodman. Arrangements will be made at the family’s discretion. Sally (Yaffa) Krantz
Sally (Yaffa) Krantz, 92, of Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield, wife of the late Mac Krantz, died Friday, June 9, 2006. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Anna (Chesick) Yaffa. She leaves a son, Howard Feivou and his wife Melinda of Niantic; a daughter, Toba Aldrich of Torrington; three brothers: Irv Yaffa of Newington, and Louis and Charles Yaffa both of West Hartford; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Irwin Feivou. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2006 at 1:30 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Gary J. Lavit officiating. Interment will follow in the John Hay Memorial Park, Garden St., Hartford. A Memorial Period will be observed following the funeral at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Mark Kotler, 18 Still La., West Hartford, and on Monday at the home of her son, 10 Crescent Ave., Niantic.
