Cohen, Myra Ann (Kantor)
COHEN Myra Ann (Kantor) Cohen passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008 at River Garden Hebrew Home in Jacksonville, Florida, where she was a resident for the past five years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of twenty-five years, Macy A. Cohen. Myra was born July 28, 1920 in New York City, but considered herself a long time resident of Jacksonville. A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, she was a bookkeeper for more than twenty-five years for Southern Wine and Spirits. Myra was a world traveler and a lover of fine art and music, interests she shared with her husband. Beloved by her family, Myra is survived by her niece Jana Lane and nephew Brian Kantor, children of her late brother Irwin Kantor; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Raymond and Dorothy Cohen, who were also her close friends and care givers in her later years, She will also be missed by nephews and nieces, Jerry Cohen, Peggy Organes, Karen Morse, Joel Eizenstat and Renee Jones, as well as, cousins Eli Becker, Paul Becker, Margo Ruby, Helen Baker (Harry) and many dear friends. She was a lifelong member of the Jacksonville Jewish Center, Hadassah and Center Sisterhood. She and her husband Macy were members of the Jacksonville Symphony, Smithsonian Institution and numerous charitable organizations. Graveside services will be officiated by Rabbi David Weiner and Cantor Yitzhak Ben=Moshe, of the Jacksonville Jewish Center, Tuesday, February 12, at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery on North Main Street. Coleman, Colonel Charlie C.
COLEMAN Colonel Charlie C. Coleman, United States Army, retired, passed away peacefully in the presence of his wife and daughter on February 9, 2008. He was 89 years old. He was born in McCormick, South Carolina. He attended the Academy of Richmond and the Junior College of Augusta before deciding to enlist in the Army. Assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia, he was accepted into the preparatory school at Fort MacPherson and in July, 1938, received his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1942. Following graduation and combat training, he was assigned to the 92nd Infantry Division in the European theater. During over two years of combat operations, he was advanced to the position of Battalion Commander. As a result of his actions, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. After the war, Colonel Coleman attended the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Over the next several years, he served in numerous capacities including the Army General Staff and had tours in Germany, England, Taiwan and Iran. He retired from the Army, having attained the rank of Colonel, in 1965. Following retirement from the military, he worked for ten years in California as a disaster control liaison consultant working with the University of Southern California. He then moved to Saipan where he worked with the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. He stayed in Saipan until his wife's retirement in 1987. After retirement he lived in Cocoa Beach for ten years and in Jacksonville for the last ten years. During retirement he and his wife enjoyed spending time with family and friends and traveling. Colonel Coleman's educational achievements include Masters Degrees from the University of Southern California and George Washington University. He will be remembered for his warm smile and the friendly word he had for everyone he met. Colonel Coleman is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Elizabeth R. Coleman and his two daughters, Dr. Anne C. Troutman of Memphis, TN and Ginger Belisle (Ken) of Jacksonville, FL. He was loved and will be remembered by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on February 13th, 2008 at 1:30PM at the Cypress Village Chapel. A short reception will follow. He will be entombed at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Army Emergency Relief, 200 Stovall Street Alexandria, VA 22332. Davis, James Louis
DAVIS James Louis Davis was born in Rock Hill, SC on February 23, 1958, and passed away February 9, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents Willie I. Davis, Creola Davis, Lucille Burson and his son Willie James Davis. James was raised in Rock Hill, SC were he attended public school. As a young man, James pursued his career with the choice to serve his country when he enlisted in the United State Navy. His tour of duties stations took him to Charleston, SC; Norfolk, VA; Sicily, Italy; Holy Loch, Scotland; Indianhead, MD; Kingsbay, GA, and NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida which completed his 20 years of service to the Navy where he retired with his family. James received the Navy Achievement Medal, while serving aboard the USS Canopus. James was confirmed as a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Jacksonville, FL. James leaves numerous loved ones to cherish his memories, including his wife: Teresita Davis, daughter: Jamie Creola Davis; and his father: DeWorth Brown (five) brothers: Walter B. Davis, and Sean Davis, both of Rock Hill, SC; John Douglas, Jacksonville, FL; Juan Burson, and Tommy Burson both of Atlanta, GA; (four) sisters: Carrie Davis, Suffolk, VA; Tavonne Burson, Atlanta, GA; Victoria Burson, Dallas, TX; Gidgett Davis, Boston, MA; (2) devote cousins: Debra (Ronald) Chisolm, Rock Hill, SC; and Linda Hopson, Winston Salem, NC; (two) uncles: George (Fredonia) Davis, and Jesse (Josephine) Davis both of Rock Hill, SC; (two) aunts: Lellar Bowman, Winston Salem, SC and Tommie Mae Davis, Rock Hill, SC; along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and life long friends. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 15, 2008 at 3:00pm at Resurrection Catholic Church, 3383 University Boulevard North, with interment in Arlington Park Cemetery where military honors will be rendered. FOSTER Melvin Eugene Foster, "Gene", 70, a former resident of Jacksonville and current resident of Silver Springs, Florida passed away on February 7, 2008. Gene was a former member of Westside Baptist Church and current member of Wyomina Park Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida. He was a US Army veteran, and retired from CSX Railroad. Mr. Foster was the current president of N.E. Camp of The International Brotherhood of Gideon's in Ocala. He was an avid golfer. He is predeceased by his first wife Helen Foster in 1993. Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Carole Foster, 2 brothers, Lewis and William Foster, sisters, Elaine Sutton, Barbara Crafford, Janice Bryant and Carolyn Sells. Mr. Harrack was born in Birmingham, Michigan on September 10, 1922, and passed away peacefully on February 10, 2008 after an extended illness. Mr. Harrack served his country proudly in the United States Navy retiring after 23 years of decorated service as a Silver Eagle naval aviator. He was a certified scuba diver, he loved camping and was a life member of the Palestine Lodge of Detroit, Michigan. HILL Arnold B. Hill, 82, passed away February 10, 2008. Born in Princeton, West Virginia, he was a resident of Jacksonville for more than 50 years. He retired from Terry Parker High School after many dedicated years of teaching. Mr. Hill was a member of the Southpoint Seventh Day Adventist Church. He served our country in the U. S. Army. Mr. Hill was predeceased by his son, Larry Hill. Survivors include his wife, Cynthia F. Hill; son, Stephen W. Hill (Becky); daughter, Deborah L. Chinn (Jeff); three grandchildren, Jeremy Chinn (Sierra), Rachel Chinn, and Tarra Hill; and many nieces and nephews. IVEY Roger L. Ivey, born November 6, 1953, left us on February 9, 2008. He is proceeded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Ivey. He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-three years, Jill Ivey. He is also survived by his son, Keegan L. Ivey; daughter and son in law, Courtney and Karim Wassef; grandson, Cale Ivey; father, Robert L. Ivey; sister, Ramona Ivey; sisters in law Terri (Conrad), Sue (Bill), Jean; and several nieces and nephews. Roger is remembered by all for his sense of humor and loving disposition. He graduated with a B.A. from Western Michigan University and a M.A from central Michigan University. He was the owner of P & R Air Conditioning along with his son. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #343. Roger was an avid fisherman and enjoyed the thrill of racing cars. He was born November 16, 1913 in Wetumka, Oklahoma to Mr. Gilbert Monroe Pippen and Mrs. Beulah Elizabeth Bradburn Pippen. James is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy June Shores Pippen and his daughter, Judith Joy Pippen. Soehlig, Floyd J.
SOEHLIG Floyd J. Soehlig "Flip", 86, passed away February 10, 2008. He was born November 25, 1921 in Oran, Missouri. Flip learned to fly in World War II where he flew B-17"s and B-24'S and he was part of the Ploesti mission in 1943. His passion for flying continued after leaving the Air Force and he owned a few of his own private planes. He retired from S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. after 31 years of loyal service. Flip is preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Soehlig and sons, Ronnie and Reggie Soehlig. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Davis (Sam); daughter - in-law, Paula Soehlig; grandsons, Ryan Soehlig (Mechelle), Tyler Davis, Chris Davis and Scott Soehlig; granddaughter, Keshia Davis; and his great grandchildren, Austin Terry, Taylor Jett and Nolan Soehlig. A graveside service will be held at Arlington Park Cemetery, 6920 Lone Star Road, at 11:00am on Wednesday, February 13, 2008. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257. STARLING Alice M. Starling, 60, of Jacksonville, passed away February 9, 2008. A native of New York, NY, she had resided in Jacksonville for many years, where she was a math teacher at Bishop Kenny High School. She was head of the Math Dept. of the Junior Class, she was a graduate of Mary Washington College in Virginia and received her masters degree from University of North Florida. Survivors include her father: Lloyd D. Hoadley; 1 daughter: Michelle Britt (Bernard); 2 sisters: Rebecca A. Miller (Gary) and Nancy Goodwin (Lee); 1 brother: Lloyd James Hoadley; 2 grandchildren: Stephen A. Britt and Stephanie A. Britt. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 14th at 3:00 PM in the Bishop Tanner Chapel located on the campus of Bishop Kenny High School, 1055 Kingman Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32207. WALL John Edwin Wall, 78, of Zephyrhills, Florida passed away on February 6th. He previously resided in Jacksonville, Florida for 43 years. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Barbara Howard Wall and his four children Laurie Anne Wall of Sudbury, Massachusetts, John Charles Wall, his wife Dawn and their children John Michael and Ryan Christopher of Land O' Lakes, Florida, Sharon Wall Stratton and her husband Rick of Birmingham, Alabama, and their children Richard and Sarah Stratton Norman, Susan Wall Skramstad and her husband Erik of Sudbury, Massachusetts and their children, Leif, Alex and Jack.
