Catherine Cross

NORFOLK - Catherine Cross, of the 9600 block of 11th Bay St., died July 21, 2007, in Tandem Health Care of Norfolk. Born in Norfolk, she was the widow of Ernest Lee Cross and was a retired cook from Farm Fresh. She was a member of St. Paul COGIC.

She is survived by a son, Bruce Cross of Norfolk; brother, Lawrence B. Spencer of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul COGIC with Dr. Wilbert L. Daniels Sr. presiding. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Carlos A. Mildred Hall

NORFOLK - Mildred Hall, 91, passed away peacefully July 24, 2007.

Mrs. Hall was born May 12, 1916, in Long Island, N.Y. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Victor Hall and wife Judy of Norfolk and Daniel Hall Jr. of Eagle Rock, Va.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Hall Sr., both parents and numerous brothers and sisters.

Betty H. Smith

NORFOLK - Betty H. Smith, 79, died July 11, 2007, in her home surrounded by her family. Born March 31, 1928, in Norfolk, Betty lived in Temecula, Calif., for the last four years. She was a high school graduate in 1947 from Matthew Fontaine Maury in Norfolk. Betty was passionate about and enjoyed a lifelong love affair growing orchids, gardening, traveling, playing bridge and cooking. Always giving and responsible, Betty at the age of 7 began raising her three brothers and sisters; at 21, her five children and in her latter years, some of her grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edwin Smith in 2005 and her daughter, Donna Delucca in 2004.

Betty is survived by her sons, Edward Smith of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Kenneth Smith, Nita Smith, both of Temecula and Debra Smith of North Carolina; 15 grandchildren four great-grandchildren; her sister, Jackie Swoope of Norfolk and Charlie Holt of Maine.

A graveside service is planned in Norfolk at Forest Lawn Cemetery today at 11 a.m.

We will miss her, she had a heart for many.

Gold Ange

VIRGINIA BEACH - Gold Ange, 84, passed away peacefully July 22, 2007, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Mr. Ange was born Aug. 30, 1922, to Gold and Ina Ange in Beauford County, North Carolina. Gold served our country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his naval service, he joined the U.S. Air Force for several years. He was a past master of the Norview Masonic Lodge No. 113 and was active for many years. When Gold wasn’t serving our country, working as an aircraft mechanic with the civil service, or busy coaching his brothers in the Masonic Lodge, you could find him working with guns; at one time he was known as the number one master gunsmith on the East coast. His family and friends will always remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, “brother” and friend. He will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Eunice Ange; a daughter, Rosanne Utley and husband Buddy; a grandson, Joshua Utley and wife Melanie; and numerous family members and friends.

Edwin Curtis Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Edwin “Pat” Curtis Jr., 78, of the 4400 block of Blackbeard Road, stepped into the waiting arms of Jesus, his son, Pat III, parents and many loving friends July 23, 2007, with his family by his side in his home. He was a native of Norfolk and was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Moore Curtis Sr. and Etta Whitehurst Curtis and his son, Edwin “Pat” Curtis III.

He graduated from Norview High School and attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Musician Union Local No. 125 where he was the 2005 recipient of its Art Supporter of the Year, and the Ocean View Democratic Club. He was a former member of the Board of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and played in the 122nd Army Band.

Pat began his musical career playing the accordion as a 10-year-old. He played the tenor sax with the Norview Marching Band throughout high school. As a teen, he played at various nightclubs in the area. Later, he joined the union and began playing professionally. He played single piano jobs as well as trios, seven pieces, 17 pieces and up to a 27-piece orchestra. He also arranged for these various groups. He was the consummate jazz musician who wrote, played and taught music for his entire lifetime. He played for and with many local and national artists and stars at the Upper Deck in Virginia Beach and elsewhere.

He received the first Lifetime Achievement award by the City of Norfolk and was awarded a star on Granby Streets Legends of Norfolk Walk of Fame.

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Paula Barry Curtis of Virginia Beach; his daughter, Katherine C. DeMarco of Chesapeake; two sons, Stan P. Curtis and his wife Jeanne of Virginia Beach and Barry R. Curtis and his wife Coleen of Shiloh, N.C.; his daughter-in-law, Gayle Leccese Curtis of Chesapeake; and 11 grandchildren, James, Kelly, Morgan, Amy, Jake, Nathan, Adam, Christina, Kevin, Caitrin and Patrick.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church Thursday at 6 p.m. by the Rev. Father Daniel Beeman. Burial will be at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, Friday at 11 a.m. The Pat Curtis Ensemble will play during the visitation 30 minutes prior to the Mass.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church Building Fund or Lee’s Friends cancer fund, 618 Stockley Gardens, Norfolk, VA 23507.

Joseph C. Katuzienski

YORKTOWN - Joseph C. Katuzienski, 80, went to be with the Lord July 25, 2007. Born Jan. 4, 1927, in Chicago, he was the son of the late George and Sophie Kaluzienski. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Joe was a member of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Niles, Ill. He was predeceased by a brother, Walter Kaluzienski and a sister, Mary Sichelski.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Delores Katuzienski; three daughters, Cindy O’Donnell, Nancy Chrabot and Susan Katuzienski; two sons, Joseph and Kenneth Katuzienski; sister, Anne Balcauski; brother, Stanley Kaluzienski; and 13 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church conducted by Fr. Cristiano Brito. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6315 N. Albert W. Miller

NORFOLK - Albert Walter Miller, 83, of the 1000 block of W. 48th St., passed away July 26, 2007, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

A native of Peak Creek in Ashe County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Charlie and Mollie Miller. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Base Police Department after 26 years of service. He also retired from Old Dominion University as the maintenance general superintendent after 10 years of service. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge No. 220, the Police Association of Virginia and the Country Boys Hunt Club and Fair Oaks Hunt Club.

He is survived by his wife, Magdalena D. Miller; a daughter, Margaret M. Hedgepeth and husband Joe of Norfolk; a son, Teddy L. Miller and wife Mary of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Eva D. Wasseen and husband Jimmy of Elkin, N.C., Joseph T. Hedgepeth Jr. of Hampton and Donna Ross of Hampton; two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Jedidiah Wasseen, both of Elkin, N.C.; and a sister, Betty Ford of Charlotte, N.C.

A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the

Robert D. Monell

PORTSMOUTH - Robert Dawson Monell, 87, of the 300 block of Saunders Drive, died

July 26, 2007, in

a local hospital.

He was born in

Portsmouth and

was preceded in

death by his

wife, Lynwood

F. Monell. Robert retired in 1980 from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Shop 31, as a production superintendent. He was the owner of F & M Confectionery from 1946 to 1958 in Fairway Park.

He was a member of Parkview United Methodist Church, the Portsmouth Masonic Lodge No. 100 for 63 years, Portsmouth Commandery No. 5 Knights Templar, Mount Horeb Royal Arch Chapter 11, Portsmouth Scottish Rite, Norfolk Court No. 75 Royal Order of Jesters and the Portsmouth Moose Lodge No. 898. He was also a member of the Khedive Temple, serving as Potentate in 1981 and recorder from 1987 to 1991. He was also an honorary member of numerous units and clubs of the Khedive Temple.

Robert is survived by five children, Roberta D. Monell, Tommy Monell and wife Bobbi and David Monell and wife Donna, all of Portsmouth, Harry Linwood Monell of Suffolk and Bette S. Spaugh and husband Dan of Hampton; a brother, William Grover Monell of Chesapeake; two sisters-in-law, Lois P. Monell and Margie Monell; 12 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, John E. Monell and Harry S. Monell.

A funeral and Masonic rites will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Steve Bingham. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Dorothy Moffitt Hollins

PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy Moffitt “Dot” Hollins, 82, passed away July 26, 2007, in a local hospital. Born in High Point, N.C., she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Moffitt. She was a retired supply systems analyst from Naval Air Station, Norfolk. She was a member of The Church of Christ.

Dot is survived by two daughters, Jeanette H. Clark (Fred) of Sterling, Va., and Alice Jarman (Ron) of Chesapeake; son, Vernon W. Hollins Jr. (Betty) of Tulautin, Ore.; sister, Ann Starrett of High Point; eight grandchildren, Fred H. Clark III, Angie Smith, Jennifer Lee, Michele Bossick, Kim Jarman, Lindsay Jarman, Keikoanne Hollins and Zephaniah Hollins; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William P. Moffitt Jr. and William G. Moffitt.

The family will receive friends in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel by Pastor Keith Lewis. Delores Nixon Butler

BOWIE, Md. - Delores Nixon Butler was born May 28, 1929, to the union of James Eley

Nixon and Ebbie

Bryant Nixon in

Norfolk. She

went home to

be with the Lord

July 25, 2007.

Mrs. Butler

lived a long and faithful life in service to the Lord. As one of the original members of the Garden of Prayer No. 3 and pioneers of the ministry, she served as the financial secretary for 32 years and as second usher. During her illness she was loved and ministered to by the church family of Refreshing Spring Church of God in Christ in Riverdale, Md.

Mrs. Butler attended Norfolk public schools, graduating from Booker T. High School. She was also a graduate of Norfolk State College with an associates degree in secretarial sciences where she was also a cheerleader. Mrs. Butler began her professional career in the education field and was one of the first African American’s to integrate the administrative offices of the Norfolk Public School System as an accounting clerk in the Purchasing Department. She went on to serve in the Purchasing Department in several capacities until her retirement in 1993.

Mrs. Butler is survived by four of her five children, Adrienne Butler Brown of Centreville, Va., Reginald E. Butler of Hampton, Keith Butler of Virginia Beach and Lisa Butler McDougal of Bowie, Md.; and one son-in-law, Walter G. McDougal Jr. Her son, Charles H. Butler Jr. preceded her in death in 2003. She is also survived by two brothers, James M. Nixon Sr. of Norfolk and Elbert Nixon of Suffolk; and one sister, Carolyn Marshall of Norfolk. Three sisters, Naomi Nixon and Evelyn Nixon formerly of Norfolk and Anne Mae Waller formerly of Richmond also preceded her in death. Her immediate family also consisted of one niece, Jean Oliver and two nephews, David Marshall and James M. Nixon Jr. as well as seven grandsons, four granddaughters and a host of extended family and friends.

Services for Mrs. Butler will be held today in the Garden of Prayer No. 3 Church of God in Christ, 200 West 28th St., Norfolk, with the viewing at noon and the funeral at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Continued from Page 4

Sally J. Rast

BRYAN, Ohio - Sally J. Rast, 54, of Portsmouth and formerly of Bryan, Ohio, died at 4:05 a.m. July 25, 2007. She was employed as an accountant/book keeper and as a seamstress, as well as working a successful Tupperware business. She was born June 23, 1953, the daughter of J.O. and Mildred (Etchen) Porath. She married David Rast July 2, 1989, in Portsmouth and he survives.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Rast is survived by one daughter, Stacey Coleman; one son, Dustin Coleman, both of Portsmouth; two grandchildren; her mother and stepfather, Mildred and Paul Daugherty of Farmer, Ohio; one brother, Ed (Marcia) Porath of Sherwood, Ohio; two sisters, Linda (Dean) Caryer of Sherwood and Sheri (John) McCoy of Defiance, Ohio; one stepbrother, Stanton Daugherty of Armonk, N.Y.; and one stepsister, Sherri Green of Bryan, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her father and one stepsister, Cindy Clifton.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Sally J. Rast will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church, Bryan, Ohio, with Pastor John McFarlane officiating. The family will receive visitors for one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m.

Alma M. Gallop

CHESAPEAKE - Alma M. Gallop, 90, went home to be with the Lord July 24, 2007, in East Jefferson Hospital. She was born in Kinston, N.C., and resided in Chesapeake and in Kenner, La. She was a member of Metropolitan AMEZ Church in Norfolk. She was the widow of Alton W. Gallop and was preceded in death by her parents, Junius and Idella Cobb. She is survived by a daughter, Ophelia Walker of Spring Valley, Calif.; stepdaughter, Shona Freeman; and a sister, Della Ray Miller of Kinston. She is survived by 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and a host of friends and family.

She retired from Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company after 37 years of faithful service. She was a member of Communications Workers of America, Chesapeake & Potomac Pioneers and Cedar Grove Acres Garden Club.

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral Monday at noon in Richardson Funeral Home of Jefferson, 11112 Jefferson Hwy., River Ridge, La. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon.

Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake.

Dorothy M. Greenwood

CHESAPEAKE - Dorothy M Greenwood, 78, of the 900 block of Wadena Road, died July 27,

2007, in a local

hospital. She

was born in

Kansas City,

Mo., and was

preceded in

death by her

husband, Albert Greenwood. Dorothy retired from the Little Creek Amphibious Base Dry Cleaners.

Survivors include eight children, Christel Lewis and husband Edward of Virginia Beach, Charles Litton and wife Janet of Schyler, Va., Robert Litton of Prescott, Ariz., Bonnie Gottschalk and husband Dale of Virginia Beach, Denis Litton and wife Gloria of Kitty Hawk, N.C., Danny Miller Jr. and wife Dawna of Chesapeake, Teresa Litton and David Litton. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Lisa and Mary Lewis, Tracie Harvey, Ashley Litton Brandon Litton, Chandra Litton, Cori and Amy Gottschalk, Stephanie and Emily Litton and Emearl Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Kyle Dylan and Catie Harvey.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Great Bridge Chapel. Burial will be private in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
