Mona Rita Heustis
Mona Rita Heustis, age 68, of Bluewater Bay, Fla., died March 24, 1999, at 12:38 a.m.
Mrs. Heustis was born in Addington, Okla., and resided in Chicago. She lived in Bluewater Bay for the past 15 years.
Mrs. Heustis is survived by her husband, Richard Heustis; sister, Naomi Misner of Muskegan, Mich.; daughter, Debra Adler and son Joseph Adler and his wife Kathy of Chicago; stepdaughter, Marilyn Heustis of Colorado and stepson Allen Heustis of New York; and four grandchildren, Allison, Stephen, Michael and Carly Adler of Chicago.
Mona resided in Bluewater Bay primarily because of her love for golf, warm weather and gardening. She was a friend to many and was blessed with a large capacity for love and compassion. She will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ruby Ilene Brewer
Ruby Ilene Brewer, 82, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Saturday, March 27, 1999, in a local hospital. Mrs. Brewer was born in Sampson, Ala., and had lived most of her life in the local area. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.
Survivors are: husband, Enoch Brewer, of Crestview, Fla.; two daughters, Ruby Nell Smith, of Crestview, Fla., Juanita Mueller, of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Howard Yates, of Jericho, N.Y., Willard Yates, of Clearwater, Fla.; sister, Annie Merle Carter, of Crestview, Fla.; and six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999, from Whitehurst Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Billy Joy and Rev. Jerry Everage officiating. Burial will follow in the Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery with Whitehurst Funeral Home, 436 W. James Lee Blvd., Crestview, Fla., in charge of the arrangements.

Jacob Steven Waggoner
Jacob Steven Waggoner, age 22, of DeFuniak Springs, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, when his life was taken from him in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Born on Dec. 18, 1976, at Eglin Air Force Base, he was the son of Larry Steven Waggoner and Martha Alice Price. He was Baptist and Pentacostal by faith. He was an accomplished lead guitar musician, a training corrections officer and swatt leader at Riverside Jail in Hopewill, Va. He had returned to school to study music and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Jacob Waggoner was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Paul J. Waggoner and Howard Paul Price and one uncle, Randall Paul Waggoner.
He is survived by his grandmothers, Nellie Waggoner, Sarah Price and Elaine Harrison; one grandfather, Benjamin Harrison; father, Larry Steven Waggoner; mothers, Martha A. Price and Kathy E. Waggoner; wife, Angela Theresa Waggoner, of Ft. Lee, Va.; brother, Nathan McKenzie and Christian Clark; sisters, Cami and husband, Michael Peacock, Leann Waggoner, Leia and Ashley McKenzie; uncle, Danny and wife, Brenda Waggoner; niece, Georgia Peacock; cousins, Brandi Waggoner, Randi Smith, Shane and Douglas Paul Waggoner; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, in the Woodlawn Baptist Church with Rev. William Wilcox and Rev. Edward Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Baptist Church Cemetery.
A time of visitation was held Sunday evening at Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Pall bearers will be: Billy Griffen, Vincent Barrineau, Nathan McKenzie, Shane Waggoner, Steve Waggoner, and Douglas Paul Waggoner.
Clary-Godwin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edsel Thomaston
James Edsel Thomaston, age 73, of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, in a local hospital. Born on Feb. 27, 1926, in Kinston, Ala., he was the son of the late Jasper and Pearl Stephen Thomaston. He had lived in the DeFuniak Springs area for the past 30 years. He was Baptist by faith; served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; graduated from Kinston, Ala., High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Auburn University and his master's degree from the University of Florida; retired as county extension agent; and his first love was working with boys and girls in the 4-H Club.
Edsel Thomaston is survived by his wife, Alice Thomaston; daughter, Tana and husband, James Eckerly; granddaughter, Jamie Lee Eckerly; step-granddaughter, Joyce and husband, Tom Brandon; step- grandson, Keith Brandon; stepson, Phillip Turner; two sisters, Lynda Clark and Winnie Merl Bolin; brother Wayne Thomaston and wife, Betty; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, in the Clary-Godwin Funeral Home Chapel, 230 Park Ave., DeFuniak Springs, Fla., with the Rev. Lonnie Wreight officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
A time of visitation was Sunday, March 28, 1999, in the Clary-Godwin Funeral Home Chapel. Clary-Godwin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

W. Cato Powell
W. Cato Powell of North Garden, Va., died March 27, 1999, at his home.
He was born May 22, 1914, in Brunswick County and in early childhood moved to North Garden, where he was raised on the family farm.
A master builder of over 125 homes and Charlottesville, Va.'s leader in custom built homes, his handiwork and craft has long outlived this gentle man who built many of the area's largest homes. He was the first builder of custom homes to ever be honored by the Charlottesville-Albemarle Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for his work in pioneering contemporary custom residential homes, his craftsmanship and dedication.
He was the son of the late William Benjamin Powell and Lucy Johnson Mason Powell of Sussex County, and later of North Garden.
He was also preceded death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Hamilton Spilman Powell of Culpeper, Va.; son, William C. "Bo" Powell of Boykin, Va. sisters, Lucy Powell Brown of New Jersey, Alice Powell Whitten of Staunton, Va.; brothers, John Mason Powell, James Franklin Powell, William Benjamin Powell Jr., Walker Mallory Powell, all of North Garden, and Jesse Dillard Powell of Kilmarnock, Va.
Survivors include his daughters, Billie P. Hogan and husband Gerald W. "Bud" of Earlysville, Va., Emily P. Runkle of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; son, Benjamin H. Powell of North Garden; grandchildren, Capt. Bryan T. Runkle of Newport News, Va., Sara Runkle Freathy of Winter Park, Fla., Dana E. Runkle of Tallahassee, Fla., Martha E. Hogan of Earlysville, and Geoffrey W. Hogan of Troy, Va.; one great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Gladys K. Powell of Charlottesville; brother-in-law, Harold Whitten of Staunton; 15 nieces and nephews; his beloved neighbors; and hosts of friends in North Garden.
Cato was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Garden. One of his last wishes was to see the church he grew up in survive. Because of this desire, the family wishes that, in lieu of flowers, donations in his honor and memory be given to Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, North Garden, VA 22959.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Mooreland Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Lula Bell Turberville
Lula Bell Turberville, age 58, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening, March 24, 1999, at Eglin Regional Hospital after a prolonged illness.
She was a homemaker, a seamstress and an avid bingo player. She was born in Abbeyville, Ga., and moved to this area in 1979 from Hesseh Oldendorf, Germany. Mrs. Turberville attended Eglin Air Force Base Chapel and was loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Frank Turberville of Fort Walton Beach; son, Franklin E. Green Jr., and daughter, Lasonja Green, both of Mary Esther, Fla.; brothers, Willie D. Thomas Jr. Of Brunswick, Ga., and Johnny Thomas of Key West, Fla.; sisters, Josie Hankerson of Brunswick, and Clara King of Darien, Ga.; and granddaughter, Sjala Rochelle Varner of Mary Esther.
A celebration of her life service will be held at McLaughlin Mortuary Chapel at noon Thursday, April 1, with Pastor Brenda Williams of New Life Deliverance Temple officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to either the American Heart Association, 222 Hospital Drive, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548; or to the American Diabetes Association, 1101 N. Lake Destiny Road No. 415, Maitland, FL 327517105.

Bruce Campbell Babbitt
Brig. Gen. Bruce Campbell Babbitt, U.S. Army retired, died suddenly March 29, 1999, in Niceville, Fla.
He was born on April 14, 1920, in Livingston, Mont., the son of Ralph and Lura Babbitt, deceased.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Babbitt of Niceville and Oakland, Md., and children by marriage, Patrick R. Treacy of Tallahassee, Fla., Brian L. Treacy and wife Patricia O'Connor, and grandchildren, Caitlin and Nathan of Guatemala; Mark W. Treacy and wife Carole Hanlein, and grandchildren, Gaelan, Gabriel and Sean of Camden, Me.; and by Andrea and Lloyd Libby and their children, Kyle and Ellison of Niceville.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty, and his children, Ann and Douglas.
He was a graduate of the University of Montana in 1941 and served in the Army during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action on Kwajalein Island; and the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters for other action in the Pacific theatre. He later served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.
After World War II, he graduated with honors from the University of Montana Law School and entered the Army as a Judge Advocate. He also received the Distinguished Service Medal in 1969, with one oak leaf cluster in 1973 when he retired.
Bruce's gallantry in military service was no less than his gallantry in all aspects of his life.
Services will be held at St. Jude's Episcopal Church in Niceville on Wednesday, March 31, at 4 p.m. Friends will be received after the service in the church conference room.
A memorial service will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Oakland on Friday, April 9, at 11 a.m. with interment following in Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may take the form of contributions to St. Jude's Episcopal Church, 200 North Partin Drive, Niceville, FL 32578; or to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 303, Oakland, MD 21550.

Mary Stripling Nauck
Mary Stripling Nauck, age 91, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away early Tuesday morning, March 30, 1999, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Nauck was born on June 23, 1907, in Talbotton County, Ga., to the late William Henry and Nannie Estelle Stripling. She resided in Augusta, Ga., before moving to Fort Walton Beach 27 years ago. She attended Georgia Teacher's College and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton Beach.
Mrs. Nauck was a former member of the Okaloosa Island Garden Club and an avid bridge player.
Mrs. Nauck was preceded in death by her first husband, John Henry Clay Smith; her second husband, Lt. Col. (U.S. Army retired) Donald A. Nauck; and by her grandson, Gary Smith. She is survived by her son, H. Gene Smith and wife Gloria of Fort Walton Beach; granddaughter, Gigi Goldstein and husband Chet of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; grandson, Greg Smith and wife Kathleen of Nashville, Tenn.; and great-granddaughter, Colby Goldstein.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, in Beal Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Ross officiating.
Those who wish may make donations to the First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton Beach in memory of Mrs. Mary Stripling Nauck.

John P. Valaer
John Valaer of Shalimar, Fla., passed away Monday, March 29, 1999, at home with his family at his side.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
John served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot for 30 years. He retired from Fort Rucker, Ala., in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; daughter, Wendy and her husband Brian; son, Allen and his wife Macy; and grandchildren, Sara
and Kimberly Barber, and Kyle, Katie and Kelsey Valaer.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 1, at Shalimar United Methodist Church, 1 Old Ferry Road, Shalimar.

Wallace W. Lowe
Capt. Wallace W. Lowe, U.S, Air Force retired, age 65, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, in a Pensacola, Fla., hospital.
He was born in Greensburg, Ky., and had been a resident of this area for the past 21 years. He was a veteran of Vietnam, serving in the Air Force for over 21 years; a member of TROA; and the Retired Officers' Association.
Survivors include his sons, Tim Lowe of Milligan, Fla., David Lowe of Conyers, Ga., and Danny Lowe of Angier, N.C.; daughter, Kathy Green of Lakeland, Fla.; brother, Russell Lowe of Greensburg; sisters, Sarah Durham of Greensburg, and Betty Bobson of Bowling, Ky.; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services, with full military honors, will be conducted at Liveoak Memorial Park Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday with a U.S. Air Force chaplain officiating.

Victoria Lynn Trullu
Victoria Lynn Cosson Trullu, age 38, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., died Monday, March 29, 1999, in Niceville, Fla.
Mrs. Trullu worked as a registered nurse. She was a 1978 graduate of Walton High School; attended the University of Florida; and graduated from Gulf Coast College. She was a loving wife, daughter, aunt, sister and friend.
Mrs. Trullu is survived by her father and mother, Tyrone and Janice McLeod Cosson; husband, Roby Trullu; brothers, Burt Cosson and wife Tiffany, and Bruce Cosson and wife Terrie, all of DeFuniak Springs; sister, Misty Cosson of Biloxi, Miss.; and niece and nephews, McLeod, Camille, Austin and Perry Lee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Red Bay Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mike McVay officiating. Burial will follow in Red Bay Cemetery.

John A. Mathews Sr.
John A. Mathews Sr., age 76, of Destin, Fla., passed away Monday, March 29, 1999.
John moved to Destin 19 years ago from Cleveland.
He leaves behind a loving wife, Zona; sons, John Jr. and Ken and daughter-in-law Nancy; daughter, Lynne and son-in-law Jack Gilles; brothers, Charles (Gerda) and Jack Mathews; sisters, Helen (Joe) Gader and Mary (Wilson) Holley; grandchildren, Jeff, Katie, Johnnie and Trudy; and great-granddaughter, Victoria.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Following the visitation, the family will have a private prayer service.

Michelle N. McIver
Michelle N. McIver, age 36, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday morning, March 30, 1999, at her residence.
Ms. McIver was born on Nov. 25, 1962, in Champaign, Ill., to the late Eddie and Maxine Broadway. She had been a resident of Fort Walton Beach for 15 years, moving here from San Antonio, Texas. She loved her music and being with people.
Ms. McIver is the mother of one, Kevin Reese of Fort Walton Beach. She is also survived by her sister, Leatrice Austin of Rantoul, Ill.; sister, Carla Broadway of San Diego; brother, Charles Broadway of Modesto, Calif.; brother, Raymond Broadway of Friedburg, Germany; brother, Lance Broadway of Holtom City, Texas; brother, Eddie Broadway Jr. of Fort Campbell, Ky.; brother, Anthony Davis of Rantoul; brother, Marqus Davis of Modesto, Calif.; brother, Roderic Louviere of Fort Walton Beach; aunt and uncle, June and Michael Louviere; nine nephews and seven nieces.
A memorial service for Ms. McIver will be conducted at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at the funeral home with Pastor Larry Boldin of Striving for Perfection Ministry officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Northwest Florida, 1005 W. College Blvd., Suite B, Niceville, FL 32578, in memory of Ms. Michelle McIver.
