Richard L. Smith
Richard L. Smith, age 48, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Fort Walton Beach Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Josephine Smith. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Steve; daughter, Samantha; brothers, Gary Grant and Miles Grant; sisters, Betty Smith and Doris Underwood; numerous nieces and nephews.
Rick was also survived by two stepdaughters and four grandchildren. They will truly miss their "Pa Pa."
Ricky worked in this area as a flooring contractor his entire adult life. He was surely a Master of his Trade. He leaves behind many friends who loved him and his love for life. He will be remembered well.
A wake will be held in Ricky's memory on Sunday, Aug. 12, at The Old Post Office, 306 Bayshore Drive, Niceville, Fla., at 2 p.m. Donations will be appreciated.

Jack Stanford Nelson
March 2, 1933-Aug. 8, 2001. Jack Stanford Nelson, age 68, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 8, 2001, at Bloomington Hospital.
Jack was born in Elkhart County, Ind., on March 2, 1933, the son of Ronald and Evelyn Nelson. He married Judy (Reed) Nelson on May 28, 1955.
Jack studied hard and earned his BS and AE (aeronautical engineering) degrees and was an aeronautical engineer for McDonnell Douglas for 32 years. He transitioned from chief test engineer to program manager/director. Flight test programs with McDonnell Douglas included the F-4, F-15 and F-18. His years took him, Judy and his children to such states as Missouri, California, Florida and Maryland. Also, during this period he had eight years of foreign marketing and travel. He retired from McDonnell Douglas in 1992, but continued as an aerospace consultant for Hazeltine until 1999.
He enjoyed his time in Bloomington but loved for the wintertime to roll around so he and Judy could be "snowbirds" at their condominium in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic in Bloomington.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Judy (Reed) Nelson, who will sadly miss her best friend and partner; a son, Mark Nelson of Weston, Fla.; another son, David Nelson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Jodi Nelson Essenberg of Bloomington; daughter-in-law, Wendy (Ayers) Nelson; granddaughter, Ashley Nelson; grandson, Nickolas Stanford Nelson of Weston, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Dayna (Gorman) Nelson; grandson, Dylan Nelson; granddaughter, Peyton Nelson of Colorado Springs; son-in-law, Jon Essenberg; grandson, Jack Nelson Essenberg; grandson, Jakob Essenberg of Bloomington; Jack's only sister, Sally (Nelson) Doering and brother-in-law Jack Doering of Elkhart, Ind.; brother-in-law, Dave Reed and sister-in-law, Cheryel Reed of Elkhart, who will all sadly miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Evelyn Nelson.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Saturday, Aug. 11, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Father Charles S. Chesebrough officiating.
The family would like for memorial contributions to be made to the Bloomington Cardiovascular Recovery Unit.

Thomas Pelham Middleton
Thomas Pelham Middleton of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, in a local hospital.
He was born on Aug. 17, 1928, in Andalusia, Ala., to the late Dr. William Robert Middleton and Mary Clyde Pelham Middleton. He was reared by his uncle and aunt, the late Thomas James Middleton and Rosa Lyon Middleton in Collirene, Ala.
Mr. Middleton attended Auburn University and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from civil service at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., with 30 years of service.
Tom was married to Joanne Newman of Tyler, Ala., in 1956, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Grace Jones Middleton of Fort Walton Beach; son, William Joseph Middleton of Montgomery, Ala.; daughters, Dorothy Middleton Powell of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Kay Middleton Bohrod of Westfield, N.J.; sister, June Middleton Albaugh of Short Hills, N.J. He is also survived by four grandsons, Graham Powell, Bradley Powell, Ryan Bohrod and Sean Bohrod; and granddaughter, Paige Powell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Bethany Baptist Church in Collirene, Ala., with the Revs. Robert Elwood Sims and George Karlton Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Collirene Cemetery. Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road, Fort Walton Beach, and Lawrence Brown Funeral Home, 2900 Citizens Parkway, Selma, Ala., are in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Matthews
Bessie Matthews, age 93, formerly of Old Milligan Road, Crestview, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at the home she shared with her daughter and son-in-law, Eva Mae (Bill) and Alfred McLeod of 734 Springlake Drive, Destin, Fla.
She is also survived by a son, Burl J. Matthews of Crestview; daughter, Corrine and son-in-law Robert Parker and daughter, Mary Louise Hamburger, all of Pensacola, Fla.; aunt, Daily Hilton of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; 31 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Mama, Granny, Missie Maw, Nanna was dearly loved by all of us and she will be dearly missed. Her love for us and our love for her will live on in our hearts forever.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Brackney Funeral Service, E. Highway 90, Crestview, with Sister Juanita King officiating, assisted by the Rev. T.V. Kolmetz. Burial will follow in Holt Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brackney Funeral Service in Crestview. Brackney Funeral Service, Crestview, is in charge of arrangements.

Janice Sue Jeffries
Janice Sue Jeffries, age 54, passed away July 31, 2001, at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans after an extended illness.
Sue was born in Muncie, Ind., on April 18, 1947, and went to school in Muncie area public schools. She resided in the Muncie area until 1976. She was a resident of the Fort Walton Beach, Fla., area for 15 years. Sue worked at the Hurlburt Field Commissary from 1987 to 1998. She married James J. Jeffries in Austin, Texas, in 1976. During their time in the military she accompanied James on assignments at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas, then to Fort Wayne, Ind., Grissom Air Force Base, Ind., RAF Alconbury, England, and then to Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.
She is survived by her husband; her three wonderful children, Deborah Dwyer of Las Vegas, William S. Pinnick of Muncie, and Victoria K. Jeffries of Atlanta; mother, Ival Long of Muncie; brother, James Long of Yorktown, Ind.; brother-in-law, Arthur Jeffries of Carmel, Ind.; and brother-in-law, Allan Jeffries of Grand Junction, Colo.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the valiant efforts made by the ICU at Eglin Air Force Base Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road, Fort Walton Beach, on Monday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m.

Russell E. Mohney
Maj. Gen. Russell E. Mohney, U.S. Air Force retired, passed away Aug. 7, 2001, at home.
He was the devoted husband of Billie, and the loving father of Lynda, Leigh and Lori.
Maj. Gen. Mohney served 33 years in the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired in 1984. He served his country with distinction during the Korean and the Vietnam conflicts, the latter where he served as commander in Operation Ranch Hand in 1965. Gen. Mohney was also the chairman of the Ranch Hand Vietnam Association. His military decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with four oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Air Medal with 28 oak leaf clusters.
Following his retirement from active duty he was active in many local organizations. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Air Force Armament Museum and was past president of the Northwest Florida Retired Officers' Club. He served as vice chairman and chairman of the Mid-Bay Bridge Authority during the period the bridge was constructed. He also was a member of the Order of Daedalians, Seagull Flight 61. In addition he was a member of the Eugene Quinn VFW Post in Inverness, Fla., and a member of the DeWitt Clinton Masonic Lodge in Sandwich, Mass.
Gen. Mohney was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, the Air Force Institute of Technology, and the Air War College.
The general leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Billie; and their daughters and their families, Lynda Ayish, husband Rick and daughter Kira, Leigh Leslie, husband David and sons Ian, Ryan and Michael, Lori Guy, husband Jason, son Nathan and daughters Emily and Elaine. In addition, sister-in-law, Betty Mohney; nephew, Donald Mohney; niece, Karen Orf; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Mohney.
A memorial service will be held at Hurlburt Field Chapel on Saturday, Aug. 11, beginning at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Ullrich officiating. At a future date, interment at Barrancas National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Terry Lee Campbell
Terry Lee Campbell of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., entered into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, after complications from a heart attack.
Born on April 19, 1956, in Brooksville, Fla., Terry was the daughter of Bette Iley and the late Reno Iley. Survivors include her loving companion, William Clark; daughters, Nia Jones and Dee Dee Watson; son-in-law, Bradford Jones; along with sisters, Rena Wood and Billie Kay Dall (and families).
Due to her love for people, Terry not only devoted her life as a loving mother, but also shared her spirit with her fellow workers and her beloved friends at the Eglin Golf Course.
A memorial service will be held at Eglin Air Force Base East Chapel (Chapel I) on Saturday, Aug. 18. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Please join us in the remembrance of our beautiful mother, as we will be celebrating and acknowledging our appreciation for the life of Terry Lee Campbell.
Flower arrangements may be sent to the Eglin Air Force Base East Chapel; or monetary contributions may be made to the "Terry Campbell Benefit Fund" at any Vanguard Bank.

Bessie Matthews

Willie Duke Flournoy Jr.
Willie D. "Bill" Flournoy Jr., age 81, of Laurel Hill, Fla., age 81, of Laurel Hill, Fla., passed away Thursday, Aug. 8, 2001, at North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview, Fla.
Bill was born in Columbus, Ga., on Feb. 22, 1920, to Willie D. Sr. and Etha Martin Flournoy and was a resident of the Northwest Florida area since 1953. He was a beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend with an outgoing personality.
Bill served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and all areas in Magnolia Baptist Church of Laurel Hill for over 50 years. He was presently serving in the Woodlawn Baptist Church in Crestview and was serving as moderator of the Okaloosa Baptist Association, as he had done many times before. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a veteran of World War II and Korea and received many medals. He was retired from civil service as an electronic technician. Bill was also a member of Gideon's Society and the NRA.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years of marriage, Norma Harrison Flournoy of Laurel Hill; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Martha Flournoy of Abbeville, Ala., Marvin and Evelyn Flournoy of Virginia Beach, Va., and Felton and Ramona Flournoy of Athens, Ga.; sisters, Helen Baker of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Betty Bryan of Abbeville; and sister-in-law, Alice Flournoy of Tallassee, Ala.
A time of visitation will be conducted from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Whitehurst Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted from Woodlawn Baptist Church in Crestview at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. Mr. Flournoy will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. for visitation prior to the service. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Laurel Hill. Arrangements and services under the direction of Whitehurst Funeral Home in Crestview.

William Earl Davis
William Earl Davis, age 77, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at his home.
William Earl was born on June 13, 1924, in Garden City, Fla., and was a resident of Crestview all his life. He was a retired firefighter with civil service and the former owner of Crestview Spur Station. He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Minnie June Davis of Crestview; sons, William Earl (Bill) Davis Jr. of Crestview, Robert Lewis Davis of El Paso, Texas, Jeff Davis of Crestview, and Daniel Lamar Davis of Lake City, Fla.; brothers, James F. Davis and Thomas E. Davis, both of Crestview; sister, Geraldine Jewell of Niceville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Brackney Funeral Service with the Revs. Bobby Hunter and Samuel Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery.
Brackney Funeral Service, Crestview, is in charge of arrangements.
