Annie C. Bishop, 76, Kingsport.
Services for Annie Campbell Bishop, 76, of Kingsport, who passed away at 9:20 p.m. Friday (April 12, 2002), will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Byrd officiating.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and anytime at the home.
Family and friends will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel to go in a procession to the garden of Prayer for a graveside service at 10 a.m. in the East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be deacons of the Bloomingdale Baptist Church: Stanford Mitchell, Elmer Hall, Jack Childress, Earl Richards, Bob Harris and Odell Wolfe.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Gleaners Sunday School class of the Bloomingdale Baptist Church or the Hospice.

Willard Chess Sr., 89, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Services for Willard Roosevelt Chess Sr., 89, of the Strahl community, who went to be with the Lord Saturday morning (April 13, 2002), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, with the Rev. Lyle Housewright officiating.
Hawkins County Color Guard will conduct military graveside services at Kite Cemetery.

Burchel Cowden, 79, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Burchel Cowden, 79, departed this life and went home to be with the Lord on Saturday (April 13, 2002).
He was a charter member of the Ramsey Freewill Baptist Church for more than 40 years where he served as a deacon, superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School teacher and song leader. He had also previously served on the executive board of the Freewill Baptist Church Conference.
He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the 131st Artillery Division during World War II. He received four major battle stars, the Purple Heart and various other medals. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4301 and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 56.
Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Anna R. Cowden, Norton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Jeannie Cowden, Ronnie and Billie Jean Cowden, all of Norton; daughter, Shirley Stidham, Norton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Avery Hill, Burlington, N.C., and Lynne and Tim Pritchard, Coeburn, Va.; one granddaughter, Kayla Cowden; seven grandsons, Brad and Milford Stidham, Lee Martin Bowling, Aaron and Dusty Cowden, Alex and Jaden Pritchard; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Janie Ramey, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Ramsey Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph McFarland officiating.
Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by Norton VFW Post No. 4301 and Wise DAV Chapter No. 56.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Walter Doolittle Sr., 65, Chuckey.
CHUCKEY - Walter John Doolittle Sr., 65, 275 Teague Road, died Sunday (April 14, 2002) in Laughlin Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
Mr. Doolittle was born in Edgerton, Wis., and was a resident of Tennessee since 1971. He was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church in Rockford, Ill.
His mother and father, Gladys and Harold Doolittle; and a brother, Robert Doolittle, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his two daughters, Regina Johnson and Gloria Doolittle, both of Afton, Tenn.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Marion and Janice Doolittle, Mosheim, Walter Jr. and Patsy Doolittle, Afton, Tenn., Harold and Metra Doolittle, Greeneville, and Kevin Doolittle of the home; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Coutoure, Dallas, Tex., and Dona Lazarus, Loves Park, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Fall Branch Chapel or anytime at the home.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fall Branch Chapel.
Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Shriners Children Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605-4277.

Lotus M. Dougherty, 87, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Lotus McConnell Dougherty, 87, W. Carters Valley Rd., entered into rest Sunday (April 14, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington and Etta Isabell Addington McConnell.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brodus W. Dougherty; two sisters, Maxie McConnell and Elsie Lake Blair; brothers, Joe Bill, Rex, and Barnett McConnell; granddaughter, Susan Johnson.
Mrs. Dougherty graduated from Virginia Intermont College, Bristol, Va. She taught at Midway High School for several years.
Mrs. Dougherty and her husband Brodus owned and operated Dougherty Cleaners in Miami, Fla. She also worked at W.T. Grant Dept. Stores in Kingsport where she retired as office manager.
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was loved by all who knew her.
She was a member of Lynn Garden Baptist Church.
Survivors include her two daughters, Donna Judd and husband Gary, Matthews, N.C., Joyce Dockery and husband Harris, Kingsport; two brothers, John McConnell and wife Mary Ruth, Kingsport, and Howard McConnell and wife Hazel, Nashville; grandson, Buddy Johnson and wife Lynn, Blountville; great granddaughters, Jennifer and Sabrina Wells; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gate City Funeral Home and anytime at the residence of her daughter, Joyce Dockery, 644 Dora St., West Carters Valley.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Addington officiating.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Dougherty Cemetery, Midway community, Scott County, Va.
The family will be meeting at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Jeanette Dykes, 57, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Graveside services for Jeanette Neeley Dykes, 57, 793 Christians Bend Road, who went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning (April, 11, 2002), will be conducted at 12 noon today at the U.S. National Cemetery, Mountain Home.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Gillis, Lee Cradic, David Gardner, Jason Gardner, Daniel Gardner, Timothy Gardner and Thomas Isacc Dykes.

Louise Hale, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Louise Jeanette Hale passed away Saturday night (April 13, 2002) following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Sullivan County where she had lived in Bristol for 55 years, while living in Mount Carmel for the past 11 years.
She attended Bethel Apostolic Church in Kingsport.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jonah and Laura Sells Eller.
Survivors include her loving husband of 49 years, Roy B. Hale; a daughter, Sharon Hale, Bristol, Tenn.; a son, Donald Hale and his wife Carolyn, Bluff City; two grandchildren, Allison Hale and Jeremy Hale; four sisters, Elizabeth Dishner and her husband Bill, Mount Carmel; Sue Johnson, Baltimore, Md., Carol Gillenwater and her husband J.C., Mount Carmel, Janice Simpson, White Top, Tenn.; along with several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Garland Tipton and the Rev. Fred Byington officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Hills Cemetery in Abingdon, Va., by the Rev. Garland Tipton and the Rev. Fred Byington.
Pallbearers will be Ted Osborne, Rick Collins, Rick Price, Rick Osborne, Ted Collins and Tommy Williams.

Services for Clifford Uda-V Hawkins, 85, of Kingsport, who went to be with the Lord on Thursday (April 11, 2002), will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown, with Pastor Winston Sweeney officiating.
Calling hours will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Military rites will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of the VFW.

Louvena House, 50, North Branch, Mich.
NORTH BRANCH, Mich. - Services for Louvena Ruth House, 50, who passed away Wednesday (April 10, 2002), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., with Pastor Arville Dingus officiating.
Burial will be at Holston View Cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Hospice.

Clara Davis Hutson, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Clara Davis Hutson, 1009 Minton Place, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday (April 13, 2002) at her residence.
She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County but had lived in Hawkins County for a short period of time. She previously worked at Borden's Mills (cotton mill) years ago.
She attended several different churches.
Mrs. Hutson was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Fairchild; her parents, George W. "Mack" Davis and Nancy Overbay Davis; and sister, Fannie Grutrude Davis.
Survivors include her husband, Ben H. Hutson of the home; daughter, Irene Holliman, Kingsport; son, George Hutson, Kingsport; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren; brother, George Washington Davis Jr., Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. today in the chapel of Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, with the Rev. Wayne Still officiating.
The family will receive friends in the chapel immediately after the services.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Mount Carmel. Family and friends who will be attending the services are to meet at the funeral home by 12 noon to go to the cemetery.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Jean Jones, 73, Church Hill.
Graveside services for Mary Jean Jones, 73, 6610 West Carters Valley Road, Church Hill, who passed away Friday (April 12, 2002), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Holston View Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Phil Bear, Everett Hagood, Terry Hagood, Mike Hagood, Kenny Hagood, Steve Hagood, Scott Ferguson and Rob Cloud.

Garnie Slagle Luster, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Garnie Helbert Slagle Luster, formerly of Maple Oaks Apts., went to be with the Lord at 2:30 a.m. Sunday (April 14, 2002) at the Wexford House.
Born in Russell County, Va., she had lived in Kingsport since 1937. She had previously lived in Stickleyville, Lee County, Va.
She was a member of Mispah Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Luster; two daughters, Ruth Harkleroad Snyder and Lois J. Farmer; and one son, Robert Guy Slagle.
Surviving are four daughters, Virginia Slagle Bullis Bellamy and husband Jack, Mable Slagle Pannell and husband Emory, Shirley Slagle Hunter and husband Ray, and Rosa Slagle Prillhart and husband Homer, all of Kingsport; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call anytime at the residence of her daughter, Virginia (Jack) Bellamy, 1350 Watauga St.

Bobby McMillan, 62, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Bobby Damon McMillan, 62, of 960 Christian Bend Road, passed away Friday (April 12, 2002) at his residence following injuries received in a chain saw accident.
Mr. McMillan was a native of Scott County, Va., but had spent most of his life in Hawkins County. He was a member of Bellmont Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Holston Defense. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Elsie Bloomer McMillan.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Potts McMillan, Church Hill; three daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle Trent, Kingsport, Tina and Tony Hamby, Lenoir, N.C., Carmella and Raynor Hinka, Germany; grandchildren, Danille, Megan, Shondell, Breanna, Devoney, Katelyn, Leah, David and Elisabeth; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Judy McMillan, Eddie and Wilhemina McMillan, and Tim McMillan, all of Kingsport, and Ernie McMillan; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marcheta and Ed Robinson and Amy and Mike Rimer, both of Church Hill; special aunt, Angie Bloomer; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home, Church Hill, and anytime at the residence.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Preacher Tony Hamby officiating.
Graveside services with military honors conducted by Hawkins County Color Guard will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at McPheeters Bend Cemetery.

Johnie Mae Moore, 88, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Johnie Mae Moore, 88, departed this life Friday (April 12, 2002) at 3:58 a.m. at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Facility in Duffield, Va.
She was born July 6, 1913 in Wetumpka, Ala., to the late John and Fannie Saxton. Johnie was married to the late John Moore.
She became a Christian at an early age. She was united with First Baptist Church of Big Stone Gap where she served as a member of the Missionary Society, Fellowship Club, kitchen committee, hospitality committee and choir. She was a charter member of Sweet Beulah Chapter No. 94, Order of Eastern Star, until her illness forced her to become inactive.
Due to failing health, she became a resident of Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Facility where she attracted new friends with her warm and loving personality. However, she never lost the love for her home and friends in Big Stone Gap.
She leaves to cherish her memories: two brothers, John W. Saxton Jr. and wife Theresa, Burtonsville, Md., Arthur L. Saxton and wife Genella, Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren, Cassandra, Portia, Lucinda, Todd, Kyle and Grady Selma, all of Inkster, Mich.; 16 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Sandra Jones and the Rev. Charles Milbro officiating.
Burial will follow in Oakview Cemetery, Big Stone Gap.

BLACKWATER, Va. - Ralph O. Robinette, 81, passed away Sunday (April 14, 2002) at Lee County Regional Medical Center.

Norva F. Salley, 97, Woodway, Va.
WOODWAY, Va. - Norva F. Salley, 97, of the Woodway community, passed away Sunday (April 14, 2002) at her home.
She grew up as a part of a pioneer family in St. Anthony, Idaho, and moved to Virginia with her husband, the late James Howard Salley Sr., and their two oldest sons in 1933.
She was the daughter of the late John T. and Mary Elizabeth Compton Fisher, of St. Anthony, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Carol, who died in early childhood; a son, Ralph O. Salley; eight sisters and two brothers.
She was an active member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Charles Brumley, Greeneville; four sons and two daughters-in-law, James H. Salley Jr. Woodway, Va., John and Wilma Salley, Dallas, Ore., Dewey G. Salley, Chugiak, Alaska, Bruce Salley and his wife Dawn Madara, Aniak, Alaska; six grandchildren, Danny Ralph Salley, Norva D. Salley, Angela S. Conz, Jackie S. Markum, Laura B. Barkman and James D. Brumley; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Fletcher, and one brother, Robert Fisher, both of St. Anthony, Idaho; special friends, Marguerite and Jack Hall, Woodway, Va., and caregivers, Gay Anderson, Barbara, Jeanna Krovich and Dorothy Castle.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with interment in Lee Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Jack Carver will officiate.
Active pallbearers will be Jim Brumley, Todd Barkman, Randy Hammonds, Scott Litton, Mike Lambert, Bobby Haynes, Bud Haynes and Denny Haynes.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church: Earl Johnston, Roy Garrett, Dr. Art Vanzee and Dave Gilbert.
