Cara Mynhier Ball, 31, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Cara Elizabeth Mynhier Ball, 31, went home to be with the Lord Sunday (April 21, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Cara was born in Sullivan County and had resided in Kingsport all of her life.
She was a member of Litz Manor Baptist Church and was very active in working with the youth. She was employed at Holston Valley Medical Center for over three years as a registered nurse. She was a loving wife and daughter.
Cara was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Mynhier.
Survivors include her husband, Brian Ball of the home; one stepson, Blake Ball, Dryden, Va.; parents, Bob and June Mynhier, Kingsport; two brothers, Robert Mynhier Jr. and wife Rhonda, Old Hickory, Tenn., Chad Mynhier and wife Jessie, Jersey City, N.J.; two nephews, Christopher Mynhier and Samuel Mynhier; one niece, Sarah Mynhier.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Danny West and the Rev. Vic Wallace officiating.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Litz Manor Baptist Church, 1383 Dewey Ave., Kingsport, Tenn. 37664.

Rev. Fred Brewer Sr., 59, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - The Rev. Fred Arvel Brewer Sr., 59, of 598 County Home Road, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (April 20, 2002).
He was a native of Johnson County, but had lived in Sullivan County for 22 years. He was the son of the late Tom and Bertha Brewer.
He was a Freewill Baptist Minister for 31 years. He had pastored several churches in Johnson City, Washington County and Sullivan County. He sang with his family in churches all over North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Brewer and Rev. Bill Brewer.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Hilliard Brewer; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Rev. Steve Davis, Limestone; three sons and daughters-in-law, Fred Arvel Brewer Jr. and Lisa, Blountville, Rev. James (Jason) Brewer and Shelby, Greeneville, and Robbie Brewer and Michelle, Johnson City; three brothers, James Brewer, Tommy Brewer and Bobby Brewer, all of Mountain City; two sisters, Mary Dugger, Mountain City, and Bonnie Jones, Jonesborough; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Weaver Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete.

James Brown, 78, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - James Andrew Brown, 78, died Friday night (April 19, 2002) at Hillside Manor Health Care.
Born in West Virginia, he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from the U.S. Army with over 29 years of service. Since retiring in 1966, Mr. Brown played Santa Claus for every year with the exception of 1990 when illness forced him to put his Claus activities on hold.
He was a former member of the Kingsport Senior Citizens Center and attended Kendricks Creek United Methodist Church in Colonial Heights.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Andrew Brown and Jean Spangler Brown; one brother, George Brown; and one sister, Mary Loudy.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Lyons Brown of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane Penley and husband Charles H. (Dawg), Kingsport; one son, Joe Greer Overbay III, Kingsport; five grandchildren, Chas Penley, Lanä Penley, Justin Penley, Brett Penley and Eric Overbay; one great-granddaughter, Laurel Bay Penley; four sisters, Sara Gensel and husband Jack, Soldotna, Alaska, Joan Vaughn and husband H.C., Lena Danna and Jean Gwozozik, all of Kingsport; three brothers, Alfred E. Brown and Ward E. Brown and wife Joy, both of Kingsport, and Johnny A. Brown and wife Diane, Tampa, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Kendricks Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites presented by Chaplain Joe W. Byrd of the American Legion.
Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is in charge of arrangements.

D.B. Carter, 83, Roanoke, Va.
ROANOKE, Va. - D.B. Carter, 83, passed away Saturday (April 20, 2002).
Mr. Carter served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was an active member of Colonial Presbyterian Church and retired from Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allie and Rachel Carter; and a brother, Ollis T. Carter.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Irene D. Carter; his daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Tom Olterman of Kingsport; his grandchildren, Derek and D'Anna Olterman; his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Geneva Carter, Nicholasville, Ky.; his sister, Marybelle Middleton, Nicholasville, Ky.; also several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call today after 2 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke, Va., where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. to receive friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Colonial Presbyterian Church with Dr. Parrish Jones officiating.
Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.
Flowers are appreciated, but those wishing to may make donations to Colonial Presbyterian Church, 3550 Poplar Dr., Roanoke, Va. 24018.

Mary Crabtree, 89, Chuckey.
CHUCKEY - Mary Edythe Crabtree, 89, formerly of Route 2, Chuckey, Walkertown community, died Sunday (April 21, 2002) at Anderson Health Care in Gray.
Mrs. Crabtree was a resident of Greeneville West Health Care from 1992 to 1999. In Feb., 1999, she moved to Anderson Health Care in Gray.
Born in Sullivan County on Feb. 11, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Ada Coates Rutledge.
She met and married James Herman Crabtree in Riverside, Calif. They returned to Greene County in 1946. They were members of Walkertown Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Crabtree was preceded in death by a son, John David Crabtree; a daughter, Mary Ethel Crabtree; her husband, James Herman Crabtree in March, 1995; five brothers, Dee, Clyde, Claude, Harley and Clay Rutledge; and two sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Jean Drain, Baileyton, and Mrs. Jack (Ada) Janes, Afton, Tenn.; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Powell (Dorthiea Crabtree) Williams, Kingsport; six grandchildren, Robin Allen Janes, Diane Drain Shackleford, Maxwell Drain, Vanessa Janes Bowers, Annette Crabtree Hunt and David Crabtree; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lois Rutledge, Chuckey, and Mary Edyth Rutledge, Kingsport; a number of nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Walkertown Presbyterian Church.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Bob Nobble officiating.
Burial will follow in the Union Temple Methodist Church Cemetery.
Men of Walkertown Presbyterian Church will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Walkertown Presbyterian Church, c/o Robert Drain, 940 Walkertown Road, Afton, Tenn. 37615, or the Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church, c/o Mrs. George Morelock, 2121 Ft. Robinson Drive, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Donald H. Ferrell, 52, Morristown.
MORRISTOWN - Services for Donald H. Ferrell, 52, who died unexpectedly Friday (April 19, 2002), will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, with the Rev. Ray Mullins officiating.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery.

Dean Hensley, 67, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Dean McCoy Hensley, 67, 2813 McCoy Street, died Friday (April 19, 2002) at Indian Path Medical Center.
Mrs. Hensley was a homemaker and a 1952 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School.
She was a member of the Vernon Heights Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank P. and Estelle Church McCoy; brother, Gwen McCoy; and sister, Ann Martin.
Survivors include her husband, Doyle Hensley; daughter and son-in-law, Patty Jones and husband Allen, Kingsport; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy Hensley and wife Britt, Mount Carmel, and Tom Hensley and wife Sonya, Kingsport; grandchildren, Shasta Johnston, Matt Carr, Brice Jones, Shea Hensley, Seth Hensley and McCoy Hensley; one great-grandchild, Paige DeAnn Johnson; one brother, John F. McCoy and wife Betty, Kingsport.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joe Hensley, Tim Hensley, Gene Hood, Phil Bowery, Richard Bourn, Johnny Skaggs and Henry Lawson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Dolan, Bob Beck and Paul Hobbs.
In lieu of flowers, one may send a contribution to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital or Vernon Heights Missionary Baptist Church.

"Johnny" Kerns, 80, Clinchport, Va.
CLINCHPORT, Va. - John Orbin "Johnny" Kerns, 80, entered into eternal rest on Saturday (April 20, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Kerns was born in Wise County, Va., on August 25, 1921, son of the late John and Mary Lane Kerns.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Kerns on September 3, 1977; his second wife, Louise Tomlinson Kerns on January 11, 2000; sister, Ollie Baldwin; brothers, James A. Kerns, Wilson Kerns, Willie Kerns, J.P. Kerns and Fred Kerns.
Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lee H. and Marie Kerns, Duffield, Va., and Charles C. and Martha Lou Kerns, Ft. Blackmore, Va.; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Ellen Thompson.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Evangelist Garry Hood, the Rev. Kenneth Neeley and the Rev. Otto Gibson officiating.
Junior Smith and the Family Tradition will provide music.
Burial will follow at the Emory Tomlinson Cemetery in the Pattonsville community.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

N. Ethel McReynolds, 94, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Graveside services for N. Ethel McReynolds, 94, 2421 John B. Dennis Hwy., formerly of 1009 Federal Street, who died Saturday (April 20, 2002), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Oak Hill Cemetery with Dr. Gene Lasley officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:50 a.m. at the cemetery for the service.
Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is in charge of arrangements.

J.C. Salyer, 64, Nickelsville, Va.
Graveside services for James Calvin (J.C.) Salyer, 64, Route 1, Nickelsville, Va., who passed away Friday (April 19, 2002), will be at 11 a.m. today at the family cemetery (Long Hollow section). The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to proceed to the cemetery.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Colonial Funeral Home in Weber City, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Pastor John Smith Jr., 73, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Pastor John M. Smith Jr., 73, entered into rest Sunday (April 21, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Gate City Funeral Home.

George Spicer, 72, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - George W. Spicer, 72, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (April 20, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Houston County, Tenn., on December 19, 1929, son of the late William Thomas and Myrtle Moore Spicer. He served three years in the U.S. Navy stationed aboard the USS Boxer in the Pacific from 1947-1949, then moving to Scott County, Va., where he had lived most of his life.
He was formerly employed as a police officer for the Town of Gate City. He also served as a town councilman for eight years. He has been a member and treasurer of the First Assembly of God Church in Gate City for several years.
In addition to his parents, three sisters, Beulah Brinkley, Ethel Harris and Francis Bellamy; and three brothers, Burch, J.D. and Collin Spicer preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mary Genelle (Bellamy) Spicer, Gate City; three sons, William Michael Spicer, Gate City, Timothy Allen and wife Joanna (Argoe) Spicer, Gate City, and Jeffrey Scott Spicer, Gate City; daughter, Georgia Ann Spicer, Gate City; two very special grandsons, Jedediah and Caleb Spicer, Gate City; very special honorary grandchildren, Miliah and Nathaniel "Bubbie" Rhoten; his brother and sister-in-law, Harding and Velma Spicer, Granite City, Ill.; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Gate City Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Paul Argoe and Dr. Roc Collins officiating.
Debra Green, Christie and Marcus Smith, The Assembly of God Singers and Dr. Jeff Vaughn will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.
The family will be meeting at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.
Eugene Pendleton, Steve Williams, Jim Sturgill, Tommy Gilliam, Charlie Green and Jeff Casteel will serve as pallbearers. Charles Dougherty Jr., B.J. Broadwater, Fred Quillen, Stan Bateman, Gary Bradshaw and all nephews and great-nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
