ABINGDON, Va. - William Milton "Bill" Fleenor, 63, died Thursday (June 20, 2002) at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.
Mr. Fleenor was a former resident of Coeburn, Va., and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Milton and Leta Bond Fleenor Sr.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra Fleenor; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Amy Fleenor, Abingdon, Va.; two granddaughters, Emily Fleenor and Megan Fleenor, both of Abingdon, Va.; three sisters, Peggy Stallard, Winchester, Va., Nancy Robinette, Huntsville, Ala., and Betty James, Richmond, Va.; several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.
Calling hours are after 6 p.m. today at Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn, Va.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Steve Talbert officiating.

Mack Beau Gibson, 79, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Mack Beau Gibson, 79, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family on Thursday (June 20, 2002).
Born in Wilder, Va. on April 22, 1923, he was the son of Starling and Maudie Rhea Gibson. In 1942, he moved to Kingsport. During World War II, he saw extensive combat in the Pacific Theater while serving in the Navy Air Corps.
He attended East Tennessee State University and received a law degree with high honors from the University of Tennessee in 1951.
Mr. Gibson was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Kingsport.
He served with distinction as president of the Kingsport Optimist Club and was a member of the Civitan Club for over 25 years and served on the Kingsport Board of Aldermen. He was appointed by Governor Winfield Dunn to establish the Tennessee State Collection service board and served as its president.
Mr. Gibson was an avid supporter of Dobyns-Bennett and UT football and was named the D-B fan of the year in 2001.
In memory of his late wife, he founded the Betty Gibson lecture series with the Kingsport archives. His love for his family and his generosity to others were the essence of the his life.
His sisters, Marie Colalucci and Sylvia Gray, preceded him in death.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Bill Moss, Kingsport, Sharon and Jeff Daniel, Knoxville; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Marie Gibson, Knoxville; eight loving grandchildren, Melissa Moss Mason and her husband, Kelsey, Beau and Whitt Moss, Sara and Jacob Gibson, and Hunter Blakely and Hollin Daniel; brothers, Frank Gibson, Dennis Gibson; sisters, Christine Dorton, Kingsport and Joy Sulecki; two aunts, Lovey Whittaker and Sally Cassell; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Davis and Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. Family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

G. Fred Hawkins, 87, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - G. Fred Hawkins, 87, of Kingsport, died at his home at 12 noon Wednesday (June 19, 2002).
He was a loving and gentle husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Fred was born July 26, 1914 and raised in Newberry, S.C., where he received his B.S. from Newberry College in 1935. From 1936 to 1941 he worked as a Chemistry Instructor at Clemson College. While enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Organic Chemistry at the University of North Carolina, war broke out and he entered the Navy in 1942. On inactive duty, he was able to complete his Ph.D. and received his degree in 1949. He was honorably discharged as Lt. Commander from the Naval Reserves in 1957.
Dr. Hawkins began working for Tennessee Eastman in 1949. He made Senior Chemist and moved into the Organic Chemicals Division, soon becoming group leader in the Control and Development Department. He retired from Eastman as Development Associate in 1981 after 32 years of service.
Dr. Hawkins had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid history buff, spending many hours volunteering at the Exchange Place and participating in the Company of Overmountain Men which reenacts Colonial lifestyles. He was a skilled cabinetmaker with a great appreciation for fine woods. His creations grace his home as well as those of many friends.
Dr. Hawkins is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Margaret D. Hawkins; son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter, David B., Trica, and Casey Claire Hawkins of Tucson, Ariz.; brothers, Hazel and Chester; a sister, Mabel Chapman and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Gary Hawkins and Nancy Effie Sula Taylor Hawkins; brother, Furman and sisters, Margarie, Helen and Gladys.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Raymore officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry, S.C. with Dr. Tim Erskin officiating. Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College St., Newberry, S.C. is in charge of the graveside service.

Bill C. Hickman, 59, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Bill C. Hickman, 59, went to be with the Lord on Friday (June 21, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was a retired Captain with the Kingsport Police Department for 32 years. Following his retirement, he served as Chief Deputy of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office until he became ill. Mr. Hickman was a loving husband and father and a dedicated public servant.
He was of the Baptist faith.
His parents, Raymond and Irene Hickman and one sister, Betty Dean preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Lou Ann Hickman, Kingsport; two sons, Dennis Hickman and wife, Sarah, Kingsport, Matt Hickman, Kingsport; two grandchildren, Molly and Samuel Hickman; one sister, Pauline Harper, Hiltons, Va.; one brother, J.D. Hickson, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Lt. Bud Hulsey officiating.
Pallbearers will be Sgt. Van Fair, Capt. Paul Bowman, Lt. Rick Meredith, Lt. Mike Roark, Sgt. Nelson Quillen and Plt. Houston Smith.
The Kingsport Police Dept. will provide the Honor Guard.
Mr. Hickman's wishes were to be cremated following the funeral service.

Walter Jones, 79, Lebanon, Va.
LEBANON, Va. - Walter M. (Squeaky) Jones, 79, died Friday (June 21, 2002) in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 5, 1922 in Newhall, W.Va., a son of the late Edward Jones and Susie Henderson Jones, he had lived in Lebanon the last 43 years. He was a retired miner for the Clinchfield Coal Co. and was a member of the UMWA Local 1256. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps. He was a member of the Hansonville Baptist Church and was the widower of Vina East Jones, who died Dec. 2, 1995.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Bill and John Jones; and one sister, Bertie Jones.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Jones Fogg and Ray Fogg, Lebanon, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter M. (Toby) Jones II, and Debbie Jones, Manassas, Va., and Terry D. Jones and Patsy Jones, Lebanon, Va.; four grandchildren, Shawn, Benji, Jason and Jerome Jones; two step granddaughters, Amy and Holly Nash; one great-granddaughter, Sidney Jones; two sisters, Hazel Borch, Green Valley W.Va., and Lou Maxwell, Spanishburg, W.Va.; two brothers, Eddie Jones, Detroit, Mich., and Raymond Jones, San Francisco, Calif.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Combs Funeral Service, Lebanon, Va.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jeff Williams officiating.

MAURERTOWN, Va. - Rosa Ann Lawson, 93, formerly of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Friday (June 21, 2002) in Shea Memorial Hospital in Maurertown, Va.
Ms. Lawson was born in Hawkins County, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Alma Jean Lawson; two sons, Harold Edmond Lawson and Larry K. Lawson; and a sister, Goldie Byington.
Surviving are one daughter, Nellie Sayre, Maurertown, Va.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

ROGERSVILLE - Thatcher H. Lyles, 84, 115 Par 3 Circle, died Friday (June 21, 2002) at his residence following a brief illness.
A veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Lyles was a retired foreman from TVA. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Rogersville.
Mr. Lyles was a mason and member of Overton Lodge No. 5 F&AM.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Jennie McKamey Lyles; sister, Lottie Lyles; brother, Howard Lyles; and granddaughter, Jennifer Lyles.
Surviving are his wife, Jessie Ellison Lyles, of the home; one daughter, Martha Henard and husband, Tommy, Rogersville; two sons, Bill Lyles and wife, Sue, Rogersville and David Lyles and wife, Janice, Gray; one sister, Evelyn Greene of Crossville; four grandchildren, Jessica Owen and husband, Terry, Rogersville, Brian Henard, Norcross, Ga., Wesley Lyles, Rogersville and Kevin Lyles, Gray; three great-grandsons, Daniel Owen, Benjamin Owen and Stephen Owen, all of Rogersville.

Gladys McCulley, 84, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Gladys Ellen McCulley, 84, died Friday (June 21, 2002) at her residence.
The daughter of the late Walter Elbert and Lula Alice Wilson Chase, she was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. She retired in 1977 from Tennessee Eastman with 35 years of service.
She was a member of Rock Springs United Methodist Church.
Mrs. McCulley was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Bailey (Doc) McCulley; and brothers, Ralph, Frank, Clyde, Fred and Charles Chase.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Lou Ann and Benjamin Thomas (Tom) Moore, Kingsport; granddaughter, Heather Ellen Moore Kunysz; grandson, Andrew McCulley Moore, both of Nashville; and a brother, J. Paul Chase, Kingsport.
Calling hours are from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Rock Springs United Methodist Church.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church with Scott A. Robertson-Gouge and Regina Shelton officiating.

W. Howard Moody Jr., 68, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - William Howard Moody Jr., 68, 5609 Apache Drive, passed away at his home with his home with his family by his side on Friday (June 21, 2002).
He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and a member of Emory United Methodist Church.
Mr. Moody was a retired employee of Tennessee Eastman Co. after 28 years of active service.
His parents, Howard and Alma Moody and one sister, Hazel Moody preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Moody, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rayna and Mike Bowery, Kingsport, Kay and Jim Thomas, Jonesborough; one son, Michael Moody, Jonesborough; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Juanita Smith, Columbia, S.C., and Betty Bullis, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

Charnita Moore, Fairview, Va.
FAIRVIEW, Va. - Charnita Dawn Moore, born on Dec. 31, 1966, went to heaven on June 18, 2002.
She lived in the Fairview community for most of her life and attended Robinette Memorial Methodist Church.
She attended Manville School in Gate City, Va., and was a student at Rye Cove High School in Special Education. To broaden her skills and education, she attended and lived on the campus of Southwest Virginia Training Center in Hillsville, Va. since 1996.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Horace and Edna Wells, Fairview, Va., Clyde Moore, Church Hill, and Claude Berry Sr., Fairview, Va.
Surviving are her parents, Jack and Christine Berry, Fairview, Va., Gerald W. Moore, Knoxville; two brothers, Jack Leon Berry Jr., Fairview, Va., Joshua H. Moore, Kingsport; six sisters, Revonda (Moore) Russell, Duffield, Va., Ashley Berry, Fairview, Va., Brenda (Berry) Eagle, Morristown, Devona (Berry) Czechowski and Patricia (Berry) Czechowski, both of Warren, Ohio, Tammy (Berry) Urick, Utica, Mich.; grandparents, Kate (Moore) Arrington, Church Hill, and Marie Berry, Fairview, Va.; several nieces and nephews.
We would like to give an honorary mention to a special caregiver, Joyce Quillen, Clinchport, Va., also to B.J. Sharp and the staff of Southwest Virginia Training Center in Hillsville, Va. for all of their love and dedication.

She was a special angel that God gently placed in our lives to remind us daily that the greatest virtue to living is happiness and unconditional love.

A memorial service for B. Keith Westmoreland, 55, Kingsport, who died Wednesday evening (June 19, 2002) will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark L. Knisley, the Rev. Jim Gray and Jimmy Naifeh officiating.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.

KINGSPORT - Evelyn Gillenwater Whited, Preston Place Suites, died at Holston Valley Medical Center emergency room Friday (June 21, 2002).
She attended Litz Manor Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Crockford Gillenwater; and second husband, Wiley Whited.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise Duffield and husband Allen, Kingsport and Linda Hudson and husband Howard, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Sherry Begley, Vicki Fleming and Robin Cole; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Massey, Baltimore, Md.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.
