KINGSPORT - Leona L. Bennett, 86, 124 Bloomingdale Pike, died at 3:35 a.m. Wednesday (April 24, 2002) at Indian Path Medical Center following a brief period of poor health.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

Myrle Brothers, 74, Lady Lake, Fla.
LADY LAKE, Fla. - Myrle William Brothers, 74, of 1713 Rosales Road, died Tuesday (April 23, 2002).
Born in Farmersburg, Ind., Mr Brothers had lived in Lady Lake since 1999. He had previously lived in Anderson, Ind., Morristown, Tenn., and Lake Placid, Fla.
He was a retired supervisor for Forenta Inc., in Morristown with 44 years of service.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Leesburg, Fla.
Mr. Brothers was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Brothers; an infant daughter, Tammy Brothers; and a sister, Jean Neuerburg.
Survivors include his sons, Rodney W. Brothers of Eustis, Fla., and Terry M. Brothers of Middlesburg, Fla.; daughter, Tonya J. Freeman of Kingsport; sister, Beverly A. Self of Anderson, Ind.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Marcell Case, 77, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Ira Marcell Case, 77, Zion Hill Road, passed away Tuesday night (April 23, 2002) at his residence.
A lifelong resident of Hawkins County, he had served in the U.S. Army Infantry and the U.S. Air Force during World War II, where he acquired the rank of Staff Sergeant and also received the Purple Heart.
He retired from the Tennessee Highway Department after 23 years of service. His hobby was woodworking.
He was a member of Bass Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde McKinley Case and Fannie Golden Case; and two brothers, Kenneth Case and Lloyd Case.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine Yates Case, of the home; daughters, Carole Ann Case, of the home, and Sharon K. Ketron and husband Robin, Church Hill; one son, Jonathan B. Case and wife Sherry of Abingdon, Va.; two grandsons, Richard D. Case and Robert D. Case; and two "adopted" granddaughters, Hannah Marie Nye and Rachel Katherine Nye; along with several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bass Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Friends may also call anytime at the residence, Zion Hill Road, Rogersville.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Calvin Hensley and Lee Mulkey officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens by Hawkins County Color Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m.

Graveside services for Mr. Herman Fincher, 90, of 126 Oak St., Surgoinsville, who passed away at 11 p.m. Sunday (April 21, 2002), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the Liberty Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Hawkins County Color Guard.

John Paul Garland, 37, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - John Paul Garland, 37, 1000 University Parkway, formerly of Johnson City, died Sunday (April 21, 2002) at Buffalo Mountain Park.
He was a Johnson City native and had lived all of his life in the Tri-Cities area. Mr. Garland was a son of Clarence E. Garland, Johnson City, and the late Mary Frances Bulla Garland.
He was an employee of Exide Battery, Bristol.
Mr. Garland was a member of the former East Park United Methodist Church.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Roby and Lela Hodge Garland and Thomas Wade and Dollie Oliver Bulla.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include one brother, Thomas E. "Tommy" Garland, Jonesborough; two sisters, Sue Alvis, Gray, and Karen L. Greer, Johnson City; one aunt, Lois Jean Garland; one uncle, James Howard Garland; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Crystal Ann Garland.
Calling hours are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, Johnson City.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in the South Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Talmadge Brown officiating.
Burial will follow the committal service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Jonesborough, where family and friends will meet for services.

Walter Jones Sr., 83, Exeter, Va.
EXETER, Va. - Walter Gilbert Jones Sr., 83, passed away Wednesday (April 24, 2002) at Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James S. and Mary E. Jones; and a son, Willard Kelly Jones.
Mr. Jones was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA Local #6354.
He was a member of the Appalachia First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Pheobia Jones, Exeter; five sons and daughters-in-law, Sherman and Patricia Jones, Hayes, Va., Walter Jr. and Katherine Jones, Duffield, Va., Frank and Sandra Jones, Exeter, Clarence and Susie Jones, Dryden, Va., William and Betty Jones, Big Stone Gap, Va.; five daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Jerry Rutherford, Appalachia, Va., Sue Smith, Russleville, Ky., Mabel and Jimmy Garrison, Exeter, Roxie and Eddie Clark Jr., Exeter, Sandra and Jimmy Jones, Richmond, Va.; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Tonjua and Lucky Woodward.

Ruth S. Kilgore, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Ruth Sensabaugh Kilgore, of Ashley Street, passed away Tuesday night (April 23, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born in Hawkins County but had spent almost 20 years in Washington, D.C., where she retired from the Government Printing Office. She was formerly employed at the Kingsport Press.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Kingsport VFW Post No. 3382 Ladies Auxiliary. She was very active with many local groups involved in the community and belonged to the Mount Carmel Senior Citizens Center.
Mrs. Kilgore attended Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Howard Kilgore in 1984; her father, Joseph Andrew Sensabaugh in 1962; and her mother, Crew Click Sensabaugh in 2000.
Surviving are her five sisters, Doris Powell, Germantown, Ohio, Louise Sensabaugh, Kingsport, Anna Anderson, Mount Carmel, Elaine Carter, Cleveland, Ga., Bobbie Olivarri and her husband James, San Antonio, Tex.; two brothers, Fred Sensabaugh and his wife Anna, Mount Carmel, Douglas Sensabaugh and his wife Gayle, Mount Carmel; along with several nieces and nephews.

Services for Norma Jean Lane, 77, of Kingsport, who went home to be with the Lord Monday (April 22, 2002), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the chapel of Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, with Wayne Ladd officiating.

Laura Snow Massey, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Laura Snow Sandusky Massey died Wednesday (April 24, 2002) in Kingsport.
She was born in Monticello, Ky., the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Sandusky. She grew up in Somerset, Ky., once her family moved there. She graduated from Somerset High School and Georgetown College with a major in music.
She was music supervisor for all of the Somerset city schools for a number of years. After moving to Kingsport she taught music in Washington Elementary School.
She met her husband Donald B. Massey and they lived in Somerset, Ky., for a few years before moving back to Kingsport where Mr. Massey opened his own business. Mrs. Massey then taught music at Jackson Elementary School and taught private piano lessons as well.
Upon the death of her husband, she gave up her teaching and took over her husband's business and continued to run it for the next 10 years with the help of her nephew, Richard Sandusky, managing the business.
Mrs. Massey was a member of First Baptist Church where she was active for many years in various groups, as a member of the adult choir and as pianist for the youth choir for a period. She also taught Sunday school and Bible school and held offices in the Women's Missionary Union.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a former member of the Kingsport Music Club, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and a member of the Dixie Study Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Sandusky; a sister, Evelyn Sandusky; and her husband, Donald B. Massey.
Surviving are her brother and his wife, William S. and Sarah Sandusky of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Jeanne Sandusky Conway of Kingsport; two nephews, Bill Sandusky of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Richard Sandusky of Indialantic, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Marie Massey of Nicholson, Ga.; and Miss Libby Massey of Alexandria, Va.
Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Kingsport.
Services will conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the church with Dr. Marvin Cameron, Dr. Ron Davis and Dr. William Purdue officiating.
Graveside services will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Anderson, Lyman Reynolds, Barry Robertson, David Lane, Dan Bramblett, Conley Niel, Win Thomas and Mike Caughron.

Mary F. McClure, 94, Jefferson City.
JEFFERSON CITY - Mary R. McClure, 94, passed away at 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday (April 24, 2002) at Jefferson Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born in Hawkins County in 1908, and had been a resident of Jefferson County for the past 30 years.
She was the daughter of the late Frank and Emma McClure of Church Hill and was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Brenda McClure of Jefferson City, and Carrie McClure of Church Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at McPheters Bend Cemetery in Church Hill with the Rev. John Pinkston officiating.
The family will greet friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery prior to the graveside service.

Edith Jeanelle Moore, 80, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Edith Jeanelle Moore, 80, entered into rest Tuesday (April 23, 2002) at her residence.
She was born in Scott County, Va., on October 20, 1921 to the late William Patton and Mattie Elizabeth Smith McDavid.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Moore, January, 2000; and sisters, Edna Mae Curtis and Myrtle McDavid.
Mrs. Moore was a charter member and a member of Nottingham United Methodist Church. She was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va.
Surviving are her two sons, Randall and Lana Moore, Gate City, and Michael and Cheryl Moore, Kingsport; two sisters, Janie B. McDavid, Gate City, and Anna Lee Helms, Kingsport; one brother, Edwin "Ted" McDavid, Gate City; special and loving sister-in-law, Josie A. Moore, Rustburg, Va.; granddaughters and husbands, Julie and Ernie William, Sherry and Wayne Elliott, all of Gate City, Susan Skeens, Kingsport, Stephanie Page, Gate City, Melissa Ledbetter, Gate City; grandsons and wife, Jason and Michelle Moore, Duffield, Va., and Gabriel Moore, Kingsport; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and many wonderful, caring dear friends.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Sherry Elliott, 290 W. Jackson St., Gate City.

Faye Raymore, 78, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Faye Virginia Raymore, 78, 1304 Brookton Drive, died late Tuesday afternoon (April 23, 2002) at the family home.
She grew up in Dothan, Ala., and lived for many years following World War II in Morristown, N.J., where she was employed as an office manager for a law firm.
Mrs. Raymore had lived in the Kingsport area for the past 14 years and was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Shepherd Program.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jack and Judi Raymore, Mount Carmel, and Jim Raymore, Old Saybrook, N.J.; three grandchildren, Faith Raymore, Karen Raymore and Bryan Raymore; and a sister, Estelle McAllister, Gainesville, Fla.
Arrangements will be announced by Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, downtown Kingsport chapel.

Emily Reaves, 86, Jonesborough.
JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Emily E. Reaves, 86, 136 Oliver Edwards Road, died Tuesday (April 23, 2002) at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness.
A native of Unicoi, Mrs. Reaves had lived most of her life in Washington County and was a daughter of the late William Henry and Laura Alice Willis Stocton.
She was a retired employee of the Washington County School System where she had taught for 29 years.
Mrs. Reaves was a graduate of Washington College Academy and East Tennessee State College.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Carl and Samuel Stocton; and three sisters, Zettie Arnold, Nettie Southerland and Media Edwards.
Surviving are her husband, Carl Reaves, of the home; two sons, Henry Reaves and his wife, Pat, Jonesborough, and Randall Reaves and his wife, Doris, Gray; two daughters, Ellen Rainwater and Nancy Ferrell and her husband, Joe, both of Johnson City; four grandsons; five granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and six great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home, Johnson City.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the East Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Jimmie Rogers and the Rev. Charles Arnold officiating.
Graveside and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Roselawn Memory Gardens.

Rev. James Stidham, 72, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - The Rev. James E. Stidham Sr., 72, was called home by his Heavenly Father on Tuesday (April 23, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Formerly of Big Stone Gap, Va., Rev. Stidham had lived in Mount Carmel for the past six months.
A minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ, he was a faithful man of God and a great teacher of the word. Many lost souls were led to the Lord under his direction. Brother James will be missed by all those who witnessed his faith.
He was a member and deacon of the Apostolic Revival Center and a founder and former pastor of Faith Rock Church in Big Stone Gap. He was a volunteer prison minister at Wise Correction Unit 18.
He retired in 1992 with 32 years of service for Norfolk Southern Railroad and was a member of the United Transportation Union.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Myrtle Stidham; a brother, Emmitt Stidham; and sister, Ruth Passwater.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Stidham of the home; one son, James "Jimbo" and wife Pam Stidham Jr., Dungannon, Va.; two daughters, Hester and husband Larry Dougherty, Kingsport, and Doris Mallory, Henderson, Ky.; grandchildren, Brian and wife Karla Stidham, Gray, Daniel and wife Angela Lane, Big Stone Gap, Va., Traci Tignor, Shannon Mallory and Josh Mallory, all of Henderson, Ky., and Aneshia Stidham, Dungannon, Va.; brothers, Willard "Sam" Stidham, Arcadia, Fla., Odell Stidham, Columbus, Ohio, Paul Stidham Jr., Springfield, Ohio, and Ralph Stidham, Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Anna Lee, Arcadia, Fla., and Helen Poole, Corrigan, Tex.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and neighbors.

Tennessee P. Walker, 89, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Tennessee Peters Walker, 89, passed away Wednesday (April 24, 2002) after a period of declining health.
Tennessee was born in Scott County, Va., on December 3, 1912. She was married to the late Kent Walker Sr., who passed away in 1995 after 51 years of marriage.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she had been very active. She was a resident of Steadman Hill Assisted Living for five years.
In addition to her husband, her parents; a granddaughter, Beth Walker in 1990; son-in-law, Danny Mack Pierce in 2001; one sister and five brothers preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Lou Pierce of Kingsport; a son and daughter-in-law, Kent Walker Jr. and wife Donna of Kingsport; grandsons, Kent Walker III and David Pierce; a very close friend and caregiver, Judy Love; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the church with Minister Ron Davis officiating. Music will be under the direction of the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Walker will be taken to the church one hour before services.
Burial and graveside service will follow in the East Lawn Memorial Park in the garden of Christus.

Goldie Ward, 64, Coeburn, Va.
COEBURN, Va. - Goldie Elizabeth Ward, 64, died Tuesday (April 23, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was formerly of Big Stone Gap, Va.
Surviving are one sister, Beulah Southard, Big Stone Gap, Va; two nephews, Jimmy Southard, Rogersville, and Paul Southard, Big Stone Gap, Va.; and one niece, Theresa Southard, Big Stone Gap, Va.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leo Rymer and the Rev. Avery Carty officiating.
Burial will be in the Beverly Cemetery, Wise, Va.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Hassie Whetzel, 87, Williamsport, Md.
WILLIAMSPORT, Md. - Hassie Lee Whetzel, 87, formerly of Lee County, Va., passed away Sunday (April 21, 2002) at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md.
She was born Jan. 13, 1915 in Sneedville, Tenn., to the late Floyd and Ida Edna Rouse Seabolt. She was employed by Woodly Gardens Dry Cleaners of Rockville, Md., retiring in 1980 after 40 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Liza Jane Cope and Virgie Willis.
Surviving are three sons, Grover Cope, Johnson City, Ralph Cope, Germantown, Md., and James Seabolt, Falling Waters, W.Va.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one half brother, Willard Seabolt, California, Ky.; three nieces and six nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home, Jonesville, Va.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bo Cope officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Beech Grove Cemetery in Jonesville, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Williamsport Volunteer Ambulance Service Inc., P.O. Box 102, Williamsport, Md. 21795.
