Leonard W. Carrel
Leonard W. Carrel of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Cooper County Hospital in Boonville. He was 84.
Mr. Carrel was born Jan. 23, 1915, in Topeka, Kan., to Lola and Arvy Carrel. He attended Kansas State University and graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.S. degree in industrial engineering. On June 14, l941 he married Louise Schaefer.
From 1941 to 1945, he served as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Army antiaircraft and coast artillery in the Pacific theater of operation.
After his military service, Mr. Carrel worked a variety of jobs, including as an industrial engineer in a can factory, a supermarket owner and operator, an elementary school teacher, a college mathematics tutor and greeter at a discount store.
He also was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Laymen's League.
Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., is handling arrangements. No visitation is scheduled. Services, conducted by the Revs. Brian Thieme and Kenneth Gerike, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2201 W. Rollins Rd.
In addition to his wife Mr. Carrel is survived by his daughter, Terry Bell of Norman, Okla.; his son, James Carrel of Columbia; his sister, Velora Stanton of San Diego; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Carrel's parents, brother and three sisters died earlier.

Clayton E. Smith
Clayton Edward Smith of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999 at University Hospital and Clinics of a heart attack. He was 49.
Mr. Smith was the owner of Smith Gun Shop and Smith Trucking and Gravel Service, both located in Mexico, Mo. He owned the gun shop for about 10 years and sold the trucking and gravel service after the death of his daughter in the early '90s.
His nephew, Ernest Smith, said Mr. Smith loved to hunt and fish.
He "loved to joke", said Charley Dean Smith, Mr. Smith's brother.
Mr. Smith was born July 17, 1950, in Portageville to Earl Roy and Vera Della Sharp Smith.
Visitation for Mr. Smith will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services, conducted by the Rev. John Foley, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Smith will be buried at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Smith is survived by his fianc�e, Dreama Grosvenor of Columbia; three sons, Earl Smith and Raymond Smith, both of Mexico, Mo., and Daniel Jacob Smith of Columbia; two stepsons, T.J. Grosvenor and Nick Grosvenor, both of Columbia; four brothers, Everett Smith of Pocahontas, Ill., George Smith and Larry Smith, both of Columbia, and Charley Dean Smith of Higbee; three sisters, Viola White of Fulton, Patricia Merritt of Columbia, and Arlene Loveall; and eight grandchildren.
His parents and two brothers died earlier.

Marjorie Wayland
Marjorie E. Wayland of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Columbia Regional Hospital. She was 73.
Mrs. Wayland was born Feb. 7, 1926, in Boone County to Clarence L. and Lola F. Martin Warren. She married Don O. Wayland on July 7, 1951. She was a member of First Assembly of God, Eastern Star and White Shrine.
Visitation for Mrs. Wayland will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will follow the visitation. Mrs. Wayland will be buried at Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Mrs. Wayland is survived by her three sisters, Allene V. Davidson, Jean W. Smith and Nellie R. Roberts, all of Columbia.
Her husband and one son died earlier.

Dezan Dayontay Brookins
Dezan Dayontay Brookins died at birth Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at University Hospital and Clinics. Dezan was born three months premature.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services, conducted by the Rev. Keith Hardin, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dezan is survived by his mother, Andrea Brookins of Columbia; one brother, Cezan Stock of Columbia; one grandmother, Joyce Delaney of Columbia; one great-grandmother, Betty Grant of Columbia; two great-great-grandmothers, Mary Lou Forrest of Montgomery City and Alma Williams of Mexico, Mo.; and three grandfathers, Jessie Delaney of Kansas City and Roy Lyons and Gary Brookins, both of Mexico, Mo.

Pauline B. Hood
Pauline B. Hood of Columbia died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at the Columbia Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was 89.
Mrs. Hood was born Jan. 18, 1910, in Creston, Iowa, to Lansing and Amelia Isley Hurlburt. She graduated from Creston High School and Creston Community College. She took advanced studies in music at Drake University and was a professional musician who taught in Iowa and Missouri. A lifetime member of The Musicians Union, she taught piano and organ for many years.
"She was a lively woman," said Corrine Young, a fellow member of the Showme State Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. "I remember that she was quite a musician. She played the piano exceptionally well."
Mrs. Hood was also a member of the business association. The chapter voted her Woman of the Year.
Young said Mrs. Hood would often entertain her colleagues by playing the piano at chapter meetings.
Mrs. Hood demonstrated her musical talents at the Missouri and Iowa state fairs and at the Boys State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. She also had her own radio and television program in Des Moines and was a church organist for 18 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church.
She married Charles M. Hood on Oct. 28, 1934. Her husband died earlier.
Mrs. Hood was a member of the Legion Auxiliary for more than 65 years. She also held memberships in the Eastern Star and the American Organist Guild.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services, conducted by the Rev. Ken Watson, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will take place Thursday at Graceland Cemetery in Creston, Iowa.
Mrs. Hood is survived by two sons, Charles Hood of Tulsa, Okla., and James Hood of Estes Park, Colo.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Wesley S. Platner
Wesley S. Platner of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Boone Retirement Center. He was 83.
Dr. Platner was born Sept. 26, 1915, in Newark, N.J., to John and Mary Zinkowicz Platner. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science with a bachelor's degree and later received his master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
In January of 1942, work brought Dr. Platner to MU. Working for the U.S. Government Water Pollution Survey, he traveled the United States for water samples, which were then analyzed at MU.
Later that same year, Dr. Platner met Mary McConathy, whom he married on Nov. 28, 1942.
After receiving his doctoral degree in physiology in 1948 at MU, Dr. Platner worked his way to professor at the university before retiring in September of 1980.
Aside from his work in physiology, Dr. Platner is remembered for his love of painting. Cindy Forbis, administrator for Boone County Retirement Center, recalled that Dr. Platner requested a showing at the Center so he could sell his work. Forbis was so impressed by Dr. Platner's Western scenes she purchased a portrait of a horse he had done.
"He was a great artist," she said.
Services, conducted by the Rev. Charlie Pardee, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Columbia Cemetery, 30 E. Broadway.
Dr. Platner is survived by his daughter, Peggy Ann Platner of Columbia; and three nieces, all from Columbia.

Sadie G. Gregory
Sadie G. Gregory of Columbia died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Columbia Rehabilitation Center. She was 86.
Mrs. Gregory was born March 8, 1913, in Marshall to Raleigh Gibson and Hester Piper Gibson. She married George Gregory II on Nov. 11, 1936.
Mrs. Gregory graduated from Lincoln High School in Marshall and attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City.
She owned and operated Gregory Catering and Bar. She was a member of Fifth Street Christian Church, the church's adult choir, Christian Women's Fellowship and Amos Johnson Order of the Eastern Sta.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Warren Funeral Chapel, 10 N. Fourth St. Services, con-ducted by the Rev. Vicky Bundy, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fifth Street Christian Church, 401 N. Fifth St. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Marshall. Mrs. Gregory is survived by her son, George Gregory III of Columbia; her daughter, Ellen Smith of Kansas City; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Her husband died earlier.
Jeanette Jefferson
Jeanette Lorraine Jefferson of Columbia, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at University Hospital and Clinics. She was 56.
Mrs. Jefferson was born Jan. 9, 1943, in Charleston to Alfred Harris and Josie Keyes. She married John L. Jefferson on Dec. 20, 1969.
She graduated from Columbia College and became a registered nurse. She was employed at University Hospital and Clinics for 29 years and was a member of St. Paul AME Church.
Mrs. Jefferson was chairperson of the Columbia Housing Authority and was involved with the state Board of Health, Stroke Survivors Club, Frederick Douglass Neighborhood Association, Douglass Area Poetry Club and the Martin Luther King Association. She also volunteered for the Columbia/Boone County Department of Health.
Visitation for Mrs. Jefferson will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul AME Church, 501 E. Park. Services, conducted by the Rev. Kevin Jefferson and the Rev. Clifton St. James, will be at 11 a.m. Thurs-day at St. Paul AME Church. Burial will be at Columbia Cemetery, 30 E. Broadway.
Mrs. Jefferson is survived by her husband of Columbia; one son, Kevin Jefferson of Montgomery, Ala.; two daughters, Cynthia Jefferson of Columbia and Lynette Jefferson of Tulsa, Okla.; three sisters, Mildred Strong and Mary Petterson, both of Chicago, and Carolyn Betts of Indianapolis; two brothers, Alfred Harris of Memphis, Tenn., and Jacob Harris of Chicago; and two grandchildren.
Her parents, two brothers and one sister died earlier.
