Verduzco, Salinas, Vedia - Laredo, Texas, August, 1999

Mercedes Centeno Verduzco
Mercedes Centeno Verduzco,
87, died peacefully at a local
hospital on Saturday, Aug. 28,
1999, after a long illness. She
was born in Laredo and was a
life long resident of this community.
Mercedes was the beloved wife
of the late Jesus W. Verduzco,
her husband for 42 years, and a
loving mother of her two remaining
children, Margarita
(Jose L.) Gonzalez and J. Jorge
(Olga) Verduzco. Her husband
and two sons, Roberto A.
Verduzco, a Navy pilot, and
Antonio Verduzco, an infant,
preceded her in death.
She was the cherished grandmother
of Alejandra G. (Arthur)
Brady, Gabriela M. Gonzalez,
Daniela D. Verduzco and Roberto
D. Verduzco and the great
grandmother of Ryan Joseph
Brady. She had numerous nephews
and nieces throughout
Mexico, Texas and California.
Mercedes Verduzco was a caring
and loving mother to her
immediate and extended family.
She cared deeply about her
family, faith and community. In
earlier years, she served her
parish, St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church and the Catholic
schools her children attended,
Ursuline Academy and St. Joseph’s
Academy, in numerous
volunteer capacities to Assist in
religious, social and fund raising
events. She served as a
member of the All Catholic
High School Parents Club
(ACHP), the Texas A&M
University Parents Club, the
American Red Cross Association,
the Pan American Round
Table, and the Blessed Sacrament
Church Parish.
Next to volunteer service, Mercedes
enjoyed music and traveling.
She was an early supporter
of the Laredo Civic Music Association
and traveled extensively
throughout the Caribbean,
South America, Europe and
Asia. One of her most cherished
memories was her visit with
his holiness Pope John Paul II
and her attendance at the
Oberamergau Easter Season
Passion Play in Germany. Another
highlight of her international travels
was being a house
guest at the Royal Monastery of
El Escorial in Spain at the invitation
of a family friend and
noted theologian, Reverend
Licinio Gonzalez, Chancellor of
the Maria Cristina University at
El Escorial.
Prior to her long illness, she
served as a medical social
worker for the Laredo Webb
County Health Department.
A rosary was recited on Monday,
Aug. 30, 1999 at 7
p.m. offered by the family. Visitation
was held from 5 to 9
p.m. at the Joe Jackson Heights
Funeral Chapel at Loring and
Cortez.
Funeral procession will leave at
8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31,
1999 for Holy Mass at 9 a.m. to
be celebrated by Msgr. Stanley
Sliwiak, at Blessed Sacrament
Church, 2219 Galveston St.
Interment follows at the family
plot in the Calvary Catholic
Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction
of Joe Jackson Heights
Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at
Cortez.

Miguel E. Salinas
Miguel E. Salinas, 72, passed
away Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999 in
Laredo, Texas. He was born in Sabinas
Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon,
Mexico.
A private family visitation was
held at Hillside Funeral Home
Chapel on Monday, Aug. 30,
1999. Visitation will be held
Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999 at Funerales
Eternos Chapel in Sabinas
Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
Funeral services will be held
Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999.
Interment will follow in the
Panteon Municipal of Sabinas
Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
Arrangements are under the direction
of Hillside Funeral
Home, Brad Jackson, director.

Paulino Vedia
Paulino Vedia, 65, passed away
Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday,
Aug. 31, 1999 from 3 to 9
p.m. and a rosary recited at 7
p.m. in the Hernandez Lopez
and Sons Southside Chapels,
Loop 20 and Zapata Highway.
Funeral services will begin at
8:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept.
1, 1999 from the Hernandez
Lopez and Sons Southside
Chapels. Holy Mass will be celebrated
at 9 a.m. at San Vicente
de Paul Catholic Church.
Interment will then follow at
the Laredo City Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction
of Hernandez, Lopez
and Sons Southside Chapels,
Loop 20 and Zapata Highway,
