Sarah K. Ellis
Sarah Katherine Ellis, 86, of Manakin-Sabot, died Saturday, June 1, 2002.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, June 3 at West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, Richmond. Interment was in the Mausoleum of Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Richmond.
She is survived by a sister; Charlotte Osborne; four nieces, Besty Tanton and her husband, Tom, Ann Nuckols and her husband, Lawrence, Margie Dawson and her husband, Kevin, and Brenda Hatcher; a nephew, Leroy Ellis; four great nieces; Lexi Tanton, Sandi Nuckols, Penny Minor and Sydney Ellis; four great-nephews, Scott Starling, Ryan Hatcher and his wife, Leah, Shannon Hatcher and Gavin Dawson; two great-great-nephews; Ellis Dunn and Larry Dunn; and her companions, Wilda Creehan and Sarah Brooks.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Goochland Baptist Church building fund.
Bennett Funeral Home, Richmond, handled the arrangements.

Valentine Harrell Jr.
Valentine Harrell Jr., 90, of Louisa, died Sunday, June 2, 2002 at the Louisa Healthcare Center.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Dale Barnhart, will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 6 at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Gordonsville. Interment will be at Bethpage Christian Church Cemetery, Mineral.
He is survived by three daughters, Janet Warren and her husband, A.W., of Wilson, North Carolina, Rose Yvonne Harrell of Bumpass and Linda Fralin of Daleville; five sons, Bobby Ray Harrell and his wife, Barbara, of Richmond, Ronald Valentine Harrell and his wife, Innette, of Richmond, Thomas Austin Harrell of Bumpass, Gary Gene Harrell and his wife, Jean, of Bumpass and Jimmy Clyde Harrell and his wife, Judy, of Bumpass; a brother, Edward Harrell and his wife, Ella Mae, of Bethel, North Carolina; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Harrell was born October 25, 1911 in Greenville, North Carolina, the son of the late Valentine Harrell Sr. and Sally Everett Harrell.

Pearl M. Kersey
Pearl Mildred Kersey, 89, of Goochland, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at Meadows Nursing Center, Goochland.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 8 at County Line Baptist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Lula Price of Gum Spring; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and two devoted nieces, Donna Isum of Chesterfield and Stacy Trice of Gum Spring.
Mrs. Kersey was born May 19, 1913, the daughter of the late Irena and John Ragland. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, George C. Kersey.
She was a member of County Line Baptist Church, Goochland.

Raymond L. Cosner
Raymond Lester Cosner, 67, of Richmond, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 26 at Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store. Interment was in Perkins Baptist Church Cemetery, Goochland.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel J. Cosner; a daughter, Charlotte A. Cosner and her husband, Rick of North Carolina;a sister, Ruby C. Kelley and her husband, J. C. of Pennsylvania; and a number of relatives and friends.
Mr. Cosner was born April 14, 1935 in Fluvanna County, the son of the late Lester Vivian and Virginia Melton Cosner.
He was a member of Perkins Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and a retired electrician. He was retired from Cornell and Waldbauer.

Ellsworth Johnson
Ellsworth “Worth” Johnson, of Midlothian, died Thursday, July 18, 2002.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 20 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lucille Funkey Johnson; a son, Scott E. Johnson and his wife, Terry, of Goochland; three granddaughters, Lisa and Amanda Johnson, both of Goochland and Lori Johnson Stone and her husband, Steve, and their three stepchildren of Texas; a grandson, Scott Johnson of Chesterfield; and a great-grandson, Tyler Johnson of Chesterfield.
Mr. Johnson was born in San Francisco, California.
He was a graduate of Stanford University and a member of Theta Chi Fraternity.
He worked for the railroad transportation services in California, Ohio and Virginia.
Mr. Johnson served in World War II in Burma with Merrill’s Marauders and was a member of the Richmond Power Squadron.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine’s Building Fund.

Berger C. Nuckols
Berger Clopton Nuckols, 82, of Manakin-Sabot, died Monday, July 22, 2002.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 27 at the chapel mausoleum at Westhampton Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Dixie B. Nuckols; four children, Elizabeth “Betty” N. Nuckols and her husband, Jim, Richard K. Nuckols and Lex B. Nuckols, all of Manakin-Sabot and Lyn B. Caudill and her husband, Michael, of Louisa; and seven grandchildren, David Clayton Nuckols, Diana Lauren Nuckols, Lacy Brooke Nuckols, Madalyn English Nuckols, Paige Chalkley Nuckols, Morgan Chastain Caudill and Hunter Lee Caudill.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Centerville Fire and Rescue No. 3, 52 Broad Street Rd., Manakin-Sabot, VA 23103.

Virginia L. Bowers
Virginia Lee Bowers died Monday, September 30, 2002. Graveside services were private and held in Hollywood Cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Sallie Bowers Evans of Manakin-Sabot and Garnett Bowers Rush of Nashville, Tennessee; one son, Gamble McAllister Bowers III of Afton; six grandchildren, Rhys Evans, Elizabeth Krens, Catherine Hoffman, Ann Ward, Trey Dantzier and Palmer Neubauer; and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bowers graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College anbd received a Master of Social Work from Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU). She was a social worker at Family and Children’s Service in Richmond for a number of years.

Windell E. Hackney
Windell Elvira Grooms Hackney, of Louisa, died Sunday, September 29, 2002 at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital, Charlottesville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 4 at Foster Creek Baptist Church. Interment will be in County Line Baptist Church Cemetery, Goochland.
She is survived by her husband, John Henry Hackney; her father, Frank L. Grooms of Louisa; two sons, Charles R. Hackney and Kelvin M. Hackney of Louisa; two daughters, Sheila Hackney Bradley of Washington D. C., and Priscilla I. Hackney of Seattle, Washington; a son-in-law, Robert L. Bradley, M.D. of Washington D. C.; two granddaughters, Megan N. Bradley and LaKeisha Hayes, both of Washington D. C.; four sisters, Julia Thurston and her husband, Eugene, of Washington D. C., Mary F. Henderson of Silver Spring, Maryland and Hannah Grooms and Lucy Epps of Louisa; two brothers, Frank L. Grooms and his wife, Rickie, of Louisa and Carl Grooms of Laurel, Maryland; a brother-in-law, Harold Hackney and his wife, Bessie L., of Washington D. C.; a sister-in-law, Christine Jackson and her husband, Gilbert, of Kents Store; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hackney was preceded in death by her mother, Carrie Burruss Grooms.

Myrtle A. Jackson
Myrtle Arlene Jackson, 66, of Bumpass, died Thursday, September 26, 2002 at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.
Graveside services, conducted by the Rev. Virginia Farmer, were held Monday, September 30 at the Jackson family cemetery.
She is survived by a son, Charles Groggs of Bumpass; a daughter, Bessie Crowe of Maryland; a brother, J. Edward Groggs of Maryland; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Jackson was born Feruary 5, 1936, the daughter of the late Charles and Georgie Shaffler Groggs. She was also precded in death by her husband, Talmadge Jackson.
She was a homemaker.

Caroline B. Lanahan
Caroline Borden “Baby” Lanahan of Bumpass, died Saturday, September 28, 2002.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 1 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Louisa.
She is survived by a son, William B. Lanahan; two daughters, Terry L. Whisenant and Linda L. Mika; a brother, Benjamin Borden; a sister, Martha Belle Chisholm; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Woodward Funeral Home Inc., Louisa, handled the arrangements.
