ZABEL , Carl Edgar 'Buddy' Zabel, 81 years old, of Atchison, KS., died Saturday, June 17, 2006 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 21st, 2006 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Tuesday, June 20th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Mr. Zabel was born on May 6, 1925 in Atchison, KS. the son of Ernest and Louise (Yost) Zabel. He graduated from Trinity Lutheran Grade School and Atchison High School. Mr. Zabel served as a staff sergeant with the Army Air Corps from 1943-1945 as a Armorer Gunner in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe Campaigns, where he flew 33 successful combat missions. Upon his discharge from the military, he went to work at the family grocery store; Zabel Grocery, 121 S. 8th St., Atchison, KS. He worked as the butcher for 46 years retiring in 1991 missing only 2 days of work during those years. Mr. Zabel was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he had served as a financial secretary and usher. He was a member of the Fleming-Jackson Seever American Legion Post #6, Atchison, KS. He enjoyed reading, target shooting, picnics and woodworking.
His parents, and a brother, Richard Zabel, preceded Mr. Zabel in death. Survivors include two sisters; Virginia Zabel, Atchison, KS., and Ellen 'Corrine' Reder, Effingham, KS., a close family friend, Pete Cordero, Atchison, KS., a nephew, Walter Reder, Granberry, TX., nieces; Diana Hobbs, Woodbury, VA., Carol Gregg, and Nancy Young, Effingham, KS. as well as seven great nieces and nephews, and three great great nephews.

GERARDY , George L. Gerardy, 86 years old, of Atchison, KS. died Saturday, June 17, 2006 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 20th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Eduardo Bousson, Pastor of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, June 19th, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with visitation to follow until 8: 30 PM. George was born on July 25, 1919 in Wathena, KS., the son of George G. and Lucile (Niederhauser) Gerardy. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Gerardy was a master carpenter and had worked for many years for the F.P. Gehring Construction Company. He worked for four years as the maintenance supervisor for the Mt. St. Scholastica College and then owned and operated the G & G Construction Co., Atchison, KS, before retiring in 1982. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, was a member and past Master of the Active Masonic Lodge #158, and the Abdullah Shrine. He served on the Atchison Housing Authority Board, and the North East Kansas Vo-Technical School Board. He was a member of the Martha Washington Chapter #215 Order of the Eastern Star, Atchison, KS. He enjoyed fishing, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. Gerardy was married to Thelma Wohlgemuth on Sept. 13, 1947 in Emporia, KS. Mrs. Gerardy survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Gerald Gerardy, Atchison, KS., and Keith Gerardy, Beatrice, NE., two daughters; Willa George, Atchison, KS., and Mrs. Marty and husband Rick Zumbrunn, Atchison, KS. two sisters; Mary Ann Denton, and Josephine Denton, both of Atchison, KS., seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

THOMAS , Jerry Dean Thomas, 38 years old, of Atchison, KS., died Tuesday, June 13, 2006 after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, June 19th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert Ziegler, Pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Jerry was born on Nov. 15, 1967 in Atchison, KS., the son of Steven Carnes and Linda Thomas. He attended schools in Atchison, and worked as a ride operator for carnivals. Jerry had also worked various jobs including for Grippin Moving & Storage of Atchison, KS. He enjoyed fishing, playing games, playing cards, and especially his family.
Survivors include his mother and step father; Linda and Ray Martin, Atchison, KS., a son William Thomas, Kansas City, KS., two daughters; Tasha and Tyler Thomas, Kansas City, KS., two sisters; Amber Martin, Atchison, and Dana Flowers, Albany, MO., and two step sisters; Becky Martin, and Tracy Kane, both of Atchison, KS., and several aunts, uncles, and a niece. His maternal grandparents Robert & Geraldine Thomas, Atchison, and Nathan & Hallie Martin, preceded him in death.

THUMMEL , Margaret P. Thummel, 90 years old of Atchison, KS. died Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at her home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, June 16th, 2006 at St. Joseph's Church, with Fr. Bertrand LaNoue as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison, KS A parish rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 15th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with visitation to follow until 8:30 PM. Margaret P. Wentz was born on November 14, 1915 in Vermillion, KS., the daughter of John and Cecelia (Tylee) Wentz Margaret was married to Joseph Thummel on Feb. 18, 1939 in Tipton, KS. Mr. Thummel preceded her in death in 1998. Mrs. Thummel was a member of the St. Joseph Church, and enjoyed quilting, collecting antiques, reading, jig-saw puzzles and especially her family.
Survivors include a son; Dennis R. and wife Jo Thummel, Desloge,MO., a daughter; Patricia Heim, Atchison, KS., a brother; George Wentz, Sunrise Beach, MO., three sisters; Cora Henley, Rushville, MO., Dora Buchanan, Atchison, KS., and Ida Wadham, CA., twelve grandchildren, thirty two great grandchildren. Her parents, husband, a son; John Thummel, a brother; Ralph Wentz, and three sisters; Mabel Maycroft, Ethel Stanley, and Arbuts Lair, a granddaughter and a great granddaughter also preceded her in death.

MARIS , Mary Frances Maris, 95 years old,Vintage Park,Atchison, Ks., formerly of Nortonville, KS died Monday, June 12, 2006 at the Atchison Hospital. The body has been cremated.
Gravesides services and burial of cremated remains will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, June 19th, 2006 at the Nortonville, Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the ceremony at the Nortonville United Methodist Church basement. Mary Frances Reed was born on Nov. 28, 1910 in Wellington, KS., the daughter of Hal E. and C. Berneice (Frank) Reed. She graduated from the Blackwell High School, Blackwell, OK., and furthered her education at the University of Oklahoma and Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, KS. Mrs. Maris had worked as a secretary for the Probate Court, Sumner CO., KS. In the late sixties-early seventies she worked for the Jefferson County Courthouse, Oskaloosa, KS., and then at the SRS Office, also in Oskaloosa, KS. When the Village Villa Nursing home started she was the Food Service Supervisor. She was a former member of the Nortonville United Methodist Church, presently a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church, a member of the Home Welfare Club, the Nortonville Garden Club, the United Methodist Women and the Tuesday Afternoon Bridge Club. She was a long time member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Nortonville.
Mary was married to Laurence S. Maris on July 20, 1941 in Wellington, KS.. Mr. Maris preceded her in death on March 2, 1982. Survivors include a son; Richard L. and his wife Linda Maris, White Cloud, KS., three daughters; Linda and her husband Bill Cochran, Lenexa, KS., Diane and husband Joe McCoy, Wichita, KS., and Nancy and husband Sam Wheeler, Atchison, KS., nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, a son; Phillip (1951), a brother Ed Reed, and a sister; Barbara Harris preceded her in death.

THOMPSON , Lois M. Thompson, 58 years old, of Atchison, KS. died Sunday, June 11, 2006 at her home following at lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 14th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Lucas, Pastor of the Faith Bible Fellowship officiating. Lois M. Goodpasture was born on October 19, 1947 in Atchison, KS., the daughter of Jessie E. and Amy L. (Burton) Goodpasture. She attended the Atchison High School, later receiving her GED. She attended NEKTC for one year. She had worked for Century 21, Atchison selling real estate. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and enjoyed many hobbies including scrap booking, baseball cards, and selling many different things such as Avon, and toys. She owned and operated a 500 Store-TNT Bargain Barn and Chatty's. She enjoyed trips to the casino and spending time with family, children and grandchildren. She attended Faith Bible Fellowship Church.
Lois was married to Laurence B. Thompson on January 28, 1963 in Atchison, KS. He survives of the home. Additional survivors include her parents; Jesse E. and Amy L. Goodpasture, Atchison, KS., two sons; Laurence B. and his wife Jessica Thompson, Jr., Blue Springs, MO., and Tyler J. Thompson, of the home. Four daughters; Laura L. Thompson, Atchison, Leona and her husband Jay Motsinger, Atchison, KS., Tiffany Thompson, Atchison, and Brooke Thompson, of the home. A brother; John and his wife Sharon Goodpasture, Sr., Atchison, KS., three sisters; Lola Earl, Atchison, KS., Donna and her husband Jim Wood, Atchison, KS., Linda Ballard, Atchison, KS., and Marilyn and her husband Roger Chatman, Winthrop, MO., one granddaughter Jessica Motsinger, three grandsons; Tobin Thompson, Nicholas Motsinger, and Talan Thompson, and several nieces and nephews. Her brother, Jesse L. Goodpasture, a sister; Carol Martin, and brother in-law Richard Earl preceded her in death.

WISTUBA , Raymond J. Wistuba, 82, Valley Falls, KS passed away Thursday, June 8, 2006 at Jefferson County Geriatric Center, Winchester, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at St. Joseph Church, Nortonville, KS. with Father John Reynolds, Celebrant. Burial at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Easton, KS. A parish rosary will be said at 6:30 PM followed by visitation till 8:00 PM Monday at the church. A vigil prayer service will be said at 8:00 PM. O'Trimble Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson County Hospice or the Jefferson County Geriatric Center and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Wistuba was born November 12, 1923 in Winchester, KS the son of Carl Joseph and Mary Frances (Zelfer) Wistuba. He was a 1941 graduate of Winchester High School. Raymond was a member of the St. Joseph Church and the Knights of Columbus at Mooney Creek. He was a farmer and stockman most of his life.
He married Kathleen Striegel in November of 1947. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his daughters Karen Jeanne Splichal and her husband Ed of Belleville, KS; Susan Elaine Aspinwall and her husband John of Nortonville; Patricia Ann Bahr of Tecumseh, KS; A. Jane Hodge and her husband Perry of Wichita, KS; Lori Lynne Hedges and her husband Rob of Ottawa, KS and Ann Margaret 'Maggie' Ferguson and her husband Chris of Omaha, NE. Sons John Charles Wistuba of Valley Falls, KS and Robert Steven Wistuba and his wife Tammy of Valley Falls, KS. 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, sister Mary Louise Gragg of Topeka, KS.
He was preceded in death by brothers Theodore, Harry, and Charles Wistuba and twin sisters Loretta and Florentina Wistuba.

VOLK , Helen Kleile Volk, 75 years old, formerly of Atchison, KS. died Friday, June 9, 2006 at the Comfort Care Home, Wichita, KS.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, June 12th, 2006 at the Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Raymond C. Hartjen, Jr. officiating. The body has been cremated and burial of the cremated remains will follow services in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, KS. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Helen K. Helen Kleile was born on Sept. 2, 1930 in Chase, KS., the daughter of Carl and Ruth (Daggey) Kleile. She graduated from high school, received a B.A. Degree, and then a Masters Degree in Theatre Arts from Emporia State College, Emporia, KS. Mrs. Volk was a Professor of Theatre Arts at Benedictine College for over 30 years, retiring in 1996. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Atchison, KS., a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota Sorority, the American Association of University Women, had served on the Board of the Atchison Arts Association. Helen was a founding member of the Atchison Community Theatre, and a patron of the Ashby-Hodge Gallery, Central Methodist College, Fayette, MO. Helen enjoyed directing and appearing in dozens of local theatre productions.
Helen was married to Robert G. Volk, Jr., on December 26, 1951 in Atchison, KS., Bob Volk was a well known local banker with the former City National Bank, Atchison, now UMB Bank. Mr. Volk preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 1989. Survivors include a son; Richard K. and his wife Joyce Volk, Salina, KS., grandson; Zachary Volk, two step grandchildren; Joshua and Sydney Reich, and her guardian and friend Laurie Briggs, Wichita, KS.

BALLINGER , Jim A. Ballinger, 52, Nortonville, KS passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006 near Anderson, SC.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, June 12, 2006 at St. Joseph Church, Nortonville, KS. Burial will be at 2:30 PM Monday at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Parkville, MO. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 PM Sunday at the church with a rosary at 4:00 PM. O'Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Ballinger was born August 8, 1953 in St. Louis, MO the son of John A. and Helen (Roach) Ballinger. He lived in Carthage, MO until the age of 14 before moving with his parents to Kansas City, MO. He was a 1971 graduate of Park Hill High School. He was a U. S. Army veteran. He worked for Continental Airlines as a load planner specialist and later Eastern Airlines. Jim worked for Frito Lay for 10 years as an over the road driver.
He married Nancy Sidoti on August 28, 1979. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his daughters Jacqueline Ballinger of Nashville, TN, Lesley Ballinger and Lauren Ballinger both of Nortonville. His mother Helen R. Ballinger, sisters Mary Jensen of Mooresville, NC; Julie Deckman of Kansas City, MO and Ginger Johnson of Kansas City, MO.
He was preceded in death by his son John A. Ballinger in 1994 and his father John Ballinger.

STEVENS , Dorothy H. Stevens, 90 years old of Atchison, KS. died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 9th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Hollingsworth, Pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Bethel Cemetery, Weston, MO. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Thursday, June 8,2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Dorothy H. Rees was born on June 23, 1915 at Bean Lake, MO., the daughter of Thomas A. and Amanda M. (Downey) Rees, Sr. She following high school she attended beauty school in Kansas City, Mo. Dorothy worked as an order clerk at Blish-Mize Company, Atchison for 18 years and then as an apartment manager in Denver CO. for over 20 years. She returned to live here from Denver in 1985.
Dorothy was married to Scottie Stevens on June 23, 1967. Mr. Steven preceded her in death on March 17, 1995. She attended First Baptist Church, Atchison, Ks. She enjoyed her family. .
Survivors include a son, Robert (wife Connie) Mullen, Atchison, KS., a step son; Jim and his wife Maralene Stevens, Valley Falls, KS., Five grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Her parents, husband, son; Ronald Hisle, 2004, two brothers, three sisters, and one step-granddaughter preceded her in death..

CASH , Violet Florence (Cash) Ralston-Cash, 75 years old, formerly of Atchison, KS. died Sunday, June 4th, 2006 at the Greater Regional Medical Center, in Creston, IA.
Private family services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, June 8th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Steve Hollingsworth, Pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating.. Violet Florence Cash was born on Oct. 5, 1930 in Hiawatha, KS. the daughter of Joseph Floyd and Eva Cora (McFeeters) Cash. Violet attended school in Atascadero, CA. She was married to Jim Tarwater in 1946; they lived in Atascadero, CA., and later divorced. In 1954, she was married to Roy Ralston. They lived in Atchison, KS. where they owned and operated a restaurant. Violet worked as a waitress and a production worker for Midwest Solvents, Atchison, KS. Mr. Ralston preceded her in death on April 23, 1978. Violet retired and was later married to George Cash in 1983. They moved to Grants, NM. Mr. Cash preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Cash worked as a volunteer at the hospital in Grants, NM., before moving to Creston, IA in July 1992.
Survivors include three sons; Joseph (wife Judy) Tarwater, Leavenworth, KS.,; John (wife Patty) Ralston, Atchison, KS., Roy (wife Jennifer) Ralston III, Platte City, MO., two daughters; Sharon Tarwater, Phoenix, AZ., and Becky (husband Scott) Howarth, Creston, IA., thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy (husband Norman) Olswalt, Kansas City, MO., and one brother, Robert (wife Shirley) Cash, Fremont, NE.. Her parents, two husbands; two sisters; Judy and Shirley and three brothers; Donald, Jack and Jimmy preceded her in death.

LEE , Helen C. Lee, 87 years old, formerly of Atchison, KS. died Thursday, June 1, 2006 at the Country Care Home, Easton, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 5th, 2006 at the St. Patrick's Church with Fr. Bertrand LaNoue as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick's Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM on Sunday, June 4th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with visitation to follow until 8: 30 PM. Helen C. Weber was born on Oct. 7 1918 in Atchison, KS. the daughter of Jacob P. and Alice P. (Knowles) Weber. She worked as a medical assistant for Dr. John Growney for over 25 years. Helen was a former member of the St. Patrick's Church, Atchison, KS. and St. Benedicts Church, Atchison. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, American Legion Post #6 Auxiliary, the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, and St. Michaels Altar Society; she enjoyed sewing, visiting with relative and friends, and traveling.
Helen was married to Henry D. Lee on May 20, 1936 at St. Patrick's Church. Mr. Lee preceded her in death on June 8, 1965. Survivors include; two sons; Steven J. and his wife Cindy Lee, Atchison, KS., Michael P. and his wife Alvera Lee, Horton, KS., four daughters; Alice A. Domann, Atchison, KS., Catherine and her husband Harold Wilburn, Horton, KS., Donna I. and her husband, Robert Clemons, Kansas City, MO., and Nancy C. and her husband Ralph Brownfield, Elk Grove Village, Ill., four brothers; Leonard Weber, Kansas City, Mo., Leo Weber, Atchison, KS., Robert Weber, Atchison, KS., and Edward Weber, Plattsmouth, NE., four sisters; Dorothy Weber, Atchison, Evelyn Gray, Atchison, KS., Ruth Anna Ramsey, Mt. Hope, KS., and Jean Moranz, Mountain Home, Arkansas. Sixteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren. Her parents, husband, four brothers; Al, Ralph, Herman, and Jacob Weber, a sister; Irene Glancy, one grandson; Henry Lee, and one great granddaughter, also preceded her in death.

EHRET , Howard C. Ehret, 96 years of age, of Atchison, KS. died Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 3rd, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Lucas, Pastor of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church officiating. Mr. Ehret was born on Feb. 6, 1910 in Atchison, KS. the son of Charles F. and Fanny B. (Bailey) Ehret. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran stationed in England. Mr. Ehret was transported for service on the Queen Mary. He returned from serving his country and began work as an inspector for the Kansas Port of Entry, Atchison. He retired in April of 1972. Mr. Ehret was a member of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church, Atchison, KS. where he served as a Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher, and visitation minister. He also was a volunteer fireman, served on the election board, and the District #1, Water board all for the Walnut Township. He enjoyed cooking, baking, welding with steel, and church work.
Howard was married to Berdie Mae Reynolds on Sept. 23, 1933 here in Atchison, KS. Mrs. Ehret preceded him in death on Sept.18, 1991. His parents, three brothers including Herbert Ehret, a nephew, Gene Hurst, and a great nephew; Howard Eugene 'Genie' Hurst also preceded him in death.
Survivors include; two nieces, Mary Jane and her husband, Phil Sowers, Atchison, KS., Barbara and her husband Dan Dunbar, Scottsdale, AZ., a brother-in-law; Newt and his wife Mary Reynolds, Atchison, KS., three great nieces, two great nephews, two great great nieces, and two great great nephews.

WOLTERS , Ruby Ellen Wolters, 93, of Shawnee, KS, formerly of Atchison, KS, died, Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at the Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center in Merriam, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Saturday, June 3, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Atchison, with Fr. Bertrand LaNoue, Celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery, Atchison. Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30, Friday, June 2, with a rosary being recited at 7:00 pm on Friday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Wolters are suggested to ACES Endowment.
Mrs. Wolters was born December 6, 1912 in Weston, MO, the daughter of Daniel and Bessie (McClain) Boatwright. She attended schools in DeKalb, MO. Ruby worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City for over 20 years, retiring in 1979. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Shawnee, KS and a former member of St. Joseph Church in Atchison. She had lived in the Kansas City, Kansas and Shawnee, Kansas areas for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Senior Citizen Club in Shawnee. Ruby enjoyed fishing, gardening, sewing and cooking.
Survivors include one son, James Wolters and his wife, Verda, of Kansas City, MO; two daughters, Judith Darrah and her husband, Bob, of Shawnee, KS and Marilyn Chmidling of Nortonville, KS; one daughter-in-law, Wilma Wolters of Kansas City, MO; thirteen grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Thomas Wolters, four brothers, and three sisters.
