U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014

Charles Hedrick Mayberry, age 73, of Lenoir, died Sunday, October 3, 2004, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.
He was born May 18, 1931, in Alexander County, the son of the late Chester A. Mayberry and Flossie Barker Mayberry. He worked at Bernhardt Industries as a machine room supervisor for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include one son, James Mayberry of Boomer; one daughter, Linda Moffett of the Bahama Islands; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, C.A. Mayberry of Statesville; two sisters, Margaret Allen of Charlotte and Helen Kincaid of Lenoir; his significant other, Regina Williams; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are provided by Alexander Funeral Service, Inc., of Taylorsville.

Raymond Lee Cook, of the Bethlehem Community, died at his home Sunday, May 18, 2008, after a long period of declining health.
Born February 5, 1932, in Wicham, West Virginia, he was the first born son of the late Frank Fonzie Cook and Mattie Florence Clyburn Cook. He was a member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Bethlehem. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, January 1951 through December 1953, he served aboard the USS Benner. In 1954, Mr. Cook left West Virginia and moved to New Jersey, where he remained until 1988 when he moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1995, he moved to the Bethlehem Community in Alexander County. Mr. Cook was a welder for several years before becoming owner/operator of R.L. Cook Trucking, retiring in 1985 due to poor health. He was a “Jack-of-all-trades and Master-of-most,” as attested to by his many friends, family, and neighbors. He enjoyed fishing in his early years and gardening during his later years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Gilletto Cook.
Surviving are his wife of thirty-eight years, Judith Whitmore Spencer Cook of the home; a stepson, whom he raised and was proud to call “Son,” Edward Charles Spencer, Jr., and wife, Deborah Jean Smolko Spencer of Statesville; three grandsons, Thomas Edward Spencer of Knightdale, Brent Michael Spencer, and Erik Stephen Spencer of Statesville; a brother, Ronny Franklin Cook of Beckley, West Virginia; three nieces, Linda Cook Matsumoto of Morehead City, Cindy Cook Meadows of Mabscott, West Virginia, and Christine Cook Tuttle of Marlboro, New Jersey; three great-nieces, Alexis Meadows and Taylor Meadows, both of Mabscott, West Virginia, and Elizabeth Tuttle of Marlboro, New Jersey; and a life-long special cousin, Edith Snuffer of Beckley, West Virginia.
Graveside services were conducted Wednesday morning, May 21, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Beckley, West Virginia.

Lottie Elizabeth Bowman, 97, of Rink Dam Rd., Taylorsville, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville following a period of declining health.
She was born in Alexander County, the daughter of the late Adolphus Elmore Bowman and Cora Idella Starnes Bowman. She was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Bowman; five sisters, Lona Bowman Fox, Kello Bowman Dagenhart, Edna Bowman Frye, Louise Bowman Barnes, and Grace Bowman Burgess; ten brothers, Truman Bowman, Glenn Bowman, Carl Bowman, Clyde Bowman, Ross Bowman, Horace Bowman, Hyder Bowman, Willard Bowman, Atwell Bowman, and Wade Bowman; a granddaughter, Sherry Bowman; and a son-in-law, Harold Frye.
She is survived by three sons, Ted Bowman and wife Glenda of Bethlehem, Linzey Bowman and wife Doris of Taylorsville, and Wayne Bowman and wife Nancy of Bethlehem; three daughters, Pauline Richey and husband Arnold of Bethlehem, Lou Ann Frye of Taylorsville, and Glenda Sipe and husband Conley of Taylorsville; sister, Kenzell Isenhour of Taylorsville; five grandsons, Chris Richey, Bradley Richey, Eric Frye, Kevin Sipe, and Kendall Sipe; eight granddaughters, Cindy Maese, Roxanne Buff, Crystal Clipperd, Julia Rhyne, Shelby Chapman, Mitizi Powell, Jill Peek, and Christie Alley; nine great-grandsons, Joey Richey, Jamie Richey, Kyle Richey, Morgan London, Jacob Frye, Mason Frye, Keaton Peek, Karter Peek, and Kyler Peek; seven great-granddaughters, Caroline Clipperd, Porter Maese, Andrea Rhyne, Brianna Rhyne, Candy Sprinkle, Kaitlyn Sipe, and Kenna Sipe; and a great-great-grandson, Logan Sprinkle.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Shiloh Lutheran Church with the Reverend Rosa Erickson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers included Chris Richey, Bradley Richey, Kevin Sipe, Kendall Sipe, Eric Frye and Dennis Rhyne.

Alma Grace Davis Walker Isenhour, 85, of Crouch Road, Taylorsville, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville.
She was born in Wilkes County April 14, 1923, the daughter of the late Frank Davis and Bessie Laws Davis. She was a retired furniture worker and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Nattie Walker, her second husband, Jason Isenhour; a sister, Annie Mae Yates; and a brother, Carl Davis.
Survivors include six daughters, Bessie Pennell and husband Hill of Taylorsville, Sue McNeil and husband Jerry of Burlington, Linda Church and husband Sterlin of Wilkesboro, Gaynelle Russell of Hiddenite, Louise Punch of Newton, and Martha Austin and husband Jeff of Taylorsville; a step-daughter, Betty Fox of Taylorsville; two sons, Jerry Isenhour of the home and Henkel Isenhour and wife Pam of Taylorsville; a step-son, Arthur Isenhour of Taylorsville; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a special grandchild, Linda Isenhour..
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Taylorsville with Rev. Curtis Cole and Rev. Tony Martin officiating. Burial followed in the Three Forks Baptist Church Cemetery.

Paul Daniel “Dan” Bowman, Jr., 72, of Pearl Oak Road, Taylorsville, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
He was born October 25, 1935, in Alexander County, the son of the late Paul Daniel Bowman, Sr., and Alma Jolly Bowman. He was a retired furniture worker and a member of Millersville Baptist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a member of D.A.V. Chapter 84 in Taylorsville. Mr. Bowman enjoyed fishing and going to yard sales and flea markets.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet Hildebran and husband Phil of Taylorsville; two sons, Randy Bowman and wife Michelle and Jeffrey Bowman and wife Vickie, all of Taylorsville; a sister, Wanda Starnes and husband Vernon of Taylorsville; a brother, Gene Bowman of Taylorsville; and five grandchildren, Brittany Bowman, Hailey Bowman, Kristin Hildebran, Nathan Bowman, and Kayla Hildebran.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday May 22, 2008, at 4:00 p.m. at Millersville Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Jolly officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites conducted by D.A.V. Chapter 84.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service at Millersville Baptist Church. At other times, the family will assemble at the home of Mr. Bowman’s sister, 240 Pearl Oak Road, Taylorsville.

Nancy Johnson Bentley, 64, of Taylorsville, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at her residence following a brief illness. She was surrounded by many loving family members from the Bentley, Bowles, and Johnson Families.
She was born in Hiddenite May 25, 1943, the daughter of Mildred Bowles Johnson and the late Royal Johnson.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of forty-four years, Bobby Gene Bentley of the home; two children, Marvin Bentley and Monica Bentley, both of Hiddenite; two sisters, Jeanette St.Clair and husband Robert of Taylorsville and Lucille Whisnant and husband Terry of Granite Falls; a nephew, Mark St.Clair and wife Tricia of Taylorsville, parents of Madison and Rylan; a niece, Sandy Whisnant Church and husband Michael of Hickory, parents of Corey, Casey and Connor; and a nephew, Tracy Whisnant and wife Kellie of Connelly Springs, parents of Tyler and Taylor.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Hiddenite Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Huffman and Rev. Charles Cook officiating. Burial followed in the Hiddenite Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Mrs. Bentley’s nephews and cousins.

Fred “Odell” Kerley, 82, of Black Oak Ridge Road, Taylorsville, died Saturday May 17, 2008, at his home.
He was born in Alexander County June 17, 1925, son of the late William Parks Kerley and Athie Geneva Robinette Kerley. He was retired from Taylor King Furniture in Taylorsville and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, an infant sister, Pansy Deal, Lola Daniels, and Edith Pritchard; two brothers, Claude Kerley and Delmas Kerley; and a son-in-law, Raven Sonny Bowman.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Louise Deal Kerley of the home; two daughters, Gail K. Bowman and Lavonda Weaver and husband Darrin, all of Taylorsville; one son, Terry Kerley and wife Betty of Taylorsville; a sister, Corrie Daniels and husband Tommy of Taylorsville; seven grandchildren, Jeff Bowman, Chad and Amanda Kerley, Whitney and David Mecimore, and Tracy and Josh Ross; three great-grandchildren, Braedon Ross, Kyla Mecimore, and Jerry Kerley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Brent Dula, Rev. Tony Daniels, and Rev. Eddie Jolly officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers included Josh Ross, Jeff Bowman, Joel Tevepaugh, Tony Tevepaugh, Brian Tevepaugh, and Howard Tevepaugh.

James B. Dugger, 72, of County Line Road, Stony Point, beloved husband and father, was called to be with his Savior on Monday, May 19, 2008, at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville following a two-year period of declining health.
He was born in Carter County, Tenn., October 5, 1935, the son of the late Lemuel Dugger and Bessie Miller Dugger. He was a retired carpenter and an ordained Baptist minister. He served in the United States Army Medical Corps during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 10,000 of Hiddenite and the American Legion Post of Stony Point.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Lynn Dugger; a daughter, Bessie Marie Martin; and three brothers, Darrell Dugger, Bob Dugger, and Roy Dugger.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Cuccia Dugger of the home; two sons, David Boyd Dugger and wife Barbara of Bulls Gap, Tenn., and Stevie Dale Dugger of Rogersville, Tenn.; four daughters, Tammy York and husband Melvin of Stony Point, Patti Foster and Randall Shumaker of Taylorsville, Jona Morrison and husband Todd of Hiddenite, and Shannon Neal and husband Tom of Statesville; two brothers, Gary Dugger and Shelton Dugger, both of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; three sisters, Tina Hughes and Joyce Wheeler, both of Black Mountain and Ruby Taft of Canton, Ohio; seventeen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Chapman Funeral Home Chapel in Stony Point Thursday, May 22, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Herb Kelso officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral hour. Burial will follow in the Stony Point Cemetery with military rites provided by V.F.W. Post 10,000 of Hiddenite and V.F.W. Post 5466 of Taylorsville.

He was born in Alexander County November 18, 1925, the son of the late Arrie Clarence Mitchell and Melar Letha Fox Mitchell. He was a member of Friendship Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of D.A.V. Chapter 84. He worked at Clayton Marcus for over twenty years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Little Mitchell; one daughter, Brenda Picklesimer; and one brother, Tommy Mitchell.
Survivors include a special companion, Ruby Collins; three children, Shirley Sigmon and husband Gary, Donna Price and husband Fred, and Terry Mitchell and wife Janet, all of Taylorsville; ten grandchildren, Stephanie Brown, David Elder, Phillip Elder, Stacy Bowman and wife Keisha, Barbara Baker, Mitchell Bowman, Matt Picklesimer, Amy Picklesimer, Kayla Mitchell, and Lucas Mitchell; seven great-grandchildren, Daniel Brown, Madison Bowman, Tiffany Brown, Bethany Baker, Casey Bowman, Dalton Elder, and Alexander Elder; four brothers, Marlowe Mitchell, Durant Mitchell, and Steve Mitchell, all of Taylorsville, and Perry Lee Mitchell of Lenoir; five sisters, Sybil Fox, Lula Belle Harrington, Doris Keever, and Martha Rogers, all of Taylorsville, and Margaret Matlock of Charlotte; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Noel Denton Benfield, Sr, 96, of NC Hwy. 90 East, Stony Point, passed away Monday, May 19, 2008, at his home.
He was born in Alexander County September 25, 1911, the son of the late William David Benfield and Amy Moose Benfield. He was an elected Alexander County Surveyor and later was self- employed as a surveyor. He had also worked ten years for the United States Postal Service. A veteran of the United States Army during World War II, he served in Africa and Italy. Mr. Benfield was also a member of South River United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Miles Ray Benfield, Robert Lee Benfield, Ernest David Benfield, and William Howard Benfield, and three sisters, Myra B. Kerley, Christine B. Cashion, and Mary B. Black.
He is survived by his wife, Retta Sharpe Benfield of the home; one son, Denton Benfield and wife Jackie of Gastonia; two daughters, Nadine B. Chapman and husband Gene of Stony Point and Alyce B. Joines of Greensboro; six grandchildren, Kevin Chapman, Fonda Adams and husband Dale, Deanna Hissim and husband Dale, Andrew Chapman, Ashleigh Benfield, and Noel Benfield, III.; and five great- grandchildren, Jared Adams, Logan Adams, Illyana Chapman, Patrick Hissim, and Amaryna Chapman.
Funeral services will be conducted at South River United Methodist Church Thursday, May 22, 2008, at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Lynn Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites provided by V.F.W. Post 10,000 of Hiddenite and V.F.W. Post 5466 of Taylorsville. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, May 21, 2008, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at South River United Methodist Church. At other times, the family will assemble at the residence.

Loretta Day Harrington Robinson, 63 of Taylorsville, went home to be with her Lord Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville.
She was born in Alexander County February 18, 1945, the daughter of the late Flake Harrington and Mary Jane Barnette Harrington. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for forty years, a choir member, Vacation Bible School worker, Hospitality Circles, and Chrismon Ministry. She was employed by the Alexander County School Food Services for over twenty years, and for several years, she served as a bus driver. She was also named “School Bus Driver of the Year” for 2005.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Ernest Lee Harrington.
Survivors include her husband of forty-four years, Bill Robinson of the home; four children, Crystal Sherrill and husband, Jody of Stony Point, Eric Robinson and friend Doris Smith, and Mary Moore and husband James, all of Taylorsville, and Jonathan Robinson of Claremont; nine grandchildren, Katie, Weston and Chelsea Sherrill, all of Stony Point, Riley Robinson of Claremont, Cody Robinson, stationed in South Korea in the U.S. Army, Leah, Perry, and McKayla Robinson, all of Taylorsville, and Brennan Moore of Taylorsville; two brothers, Harold C. Harrington and wife Mildred and Raymond F. Harrington and wife Gaynell, all of Taylorsville; two sisters, Wanda Pritchard and husband Clay of Hiddenite and Selena Harrington and husband Roger of Taylorsville; a special friend, Patsy Mitchell of Taylorsville; and a number of cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Phil Addison, Rev. Lander Heafner, Rev. Greg Barefoot, and Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Helen Hauser Carter Howell departed this life on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville surrounded by family members.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel in Taylorsville with the Reverend Gene T. Martin officiating.
Helen, the daughter of the late Lonnie Joe Carter and Florence Elizabeth Houser Carter, was born in Yadkinville November 4, 1933. She grew up in Yadkinville, graduating from Yadkin High School in Boonville. She later attended Lutheran College in Greensboro. Helen enjoyed the Soap Operas. One could find her next to her television
during the day watching her favorite soaps and listening to, as she would say, "good ole gospel music.” Also, she enjoyed watching sports, especially football and basketball. Helen's favorite pastime was shopping. She loved to visit the stores to purchase shoes, pocketbooks, or dresses on sale.
Helen joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Yadkinville at an early age, where she attended Sunday School and church services regularly. She later joined St. John Baptist Church in Taylorsville, where she attended with her husband, Isaac Lee Howell, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include children, Rev. Marina A. Skinner of Winston-Salem and Rev. Steven U. Howell and wife Yvonne of Lenoir; two sisters, Edith Dacons and husband Edsel of Statesville and Clara Fields and husband Harold of Greensboro; grandchildren, Lizaann, Frankie, Oriana, and Benjamin; and a host of well-loved nieces and nephews. She also leaves to mourn her death her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
