Howell William Hammer, age 77, of Ellendale Fire Department Road, Taylorsville, died Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born in Alexander County March 13, 1927, the son of the late Issac LeRoy Hammer and Amanda Hefner Hammer. He was retired owner of W&H Motors in Taylorsville and was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Taylorsville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael Lee Hammer; one brother, Cyril Lee Hammer, Sr.; and one sister, Nellie Hammer. Survivors include his wife, Elaine Stine Hammer of the home; one son, William Hammer and wife Peggy of Taylorsville; two daughters, Cindy Stevenson of Taylorsville and Amanda Valle Hammer and husband Israel of Hickory; three sisters, Lula Mae Hammer of Taylorsville, Shelby Wood-ward of Wilmington, and Martha Aikman and husband Tom of Beaver Falls, Penn.; four brothers, Kenn-eth Hammer and wife Colleen of Taylorsville, J.L. Hammer and wife Evelyn of Taylorsville, Fred Hammer of Taylorsville, and Steve Hammer and wife Nancy of Jasper, Ga.; six grandchildren, David Hammer, Sara Hammer, Kandas Graham, Matthew Stevenson, Mae-gan Stevenson, and Lucas Valle Hammer; one great-grandchild, Dylan Eggers; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service was conducted Monday, Decem-ber 6, 2004, at the St. Lukes Luth. Church Cemetery with Rev. Bill Merrill and Rev. Lewis Murdock officiating. Thelma Magdelene Stafford Fox, age 83, of County Home Rd., Taylorsville, died Friday morning, December 3, 2004, at Frye Regional Medical Center - Alexander Campus in Taylorsville following an eleven-year struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was born in Alexander County October 11, 1921, the daughter of the late Arl Stafford and Rosie Carrigan Stafford. On November 26, 1938, she married Ray A. Fox. She was retired from the hosiery and furniture industries. Following retirement, she was a people greeter at Wal-Mart in Taylorsville, a position she thoroughly enjoyed because she loved meeting people. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, Ray A. Fox, on March 15, 2001; three brothers, Carl Stafford, Levi Stafford, and Fred Stafford; and a half-brother, Ike Icenhour. Survivors include two daughters, Jane F. Sharpe and husband Lee of Taylorsville and Anne F. Foulkes of Jackson, Tenn.; one sister, Brenda S. Isaac and husband Kenny of Conover; six grandchildren, Robert Johnson and wife Tamera of Taylorsville, Wesley Sharpe and wife Hope of Taylorsville, John Sharpe of Elkin, Catherine J. Horney and husband Skip of Bath, Sharon J. Kruelle of Jackson, Tenn., and Suzanne J. Rische of Jackson, Tenn.; and seven great-grandchildren, Amy Lynn Johnson of Taylorsville, Seth Sharpe, Evan Sharpe, Matthew Kruelle, Laura Anne Kruelle, Brian Rische, and Andrew Rische; and her many loving caregivers. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 5, 2004, at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Spears and Rev. Horace Moree officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers included Robert Johnson, Wesley Sharpe, John Sharpe, Skip Horney, Jody Gibson, and Gary Herman.

Irene Hendren Sharpe, 98, of Taylorsville, co-publisher of The Taylorsville Times for almost 40 years, died Wednesday evening, December 1, 2004, at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville. She was born in Alexander County February 13, 1906, the daughter of the late Vance McNeil Hendren and Margaret Holbrook Hendren of Hiddenite. A member of Hiddenite United Methodist Church, she served as Sunday School teacher of the Willing Workers Class for over fifty years and participated in the Women’s Missionary Society. She was active in the Homemaker Extension organization, holding county, district, and state offices. She enjoyed traveling, visiting six continents. After receiving a teacher’s certificate from Lenoir-Rhyne College, she taught school at Rocky Springs and Mt. Herman Schools in Alexander County and then one term in Union County. On September 9, 1931, Irene and Conway Sharpe were married in a house they had rented to set up housekeeping. They later purchased this house, which would be their only residence and the birthplace of their two sons. She was involved in the operation of the Economy 5 & 10 Store in Taylorsville for several years and then focused on her role as homemaker until the death of her husband on August 29, 1962. Irene became a partner in The Taylorsville Times and continued an active role for almost four decades. Survivors include two sons, Benny H. Sharpe and wife Brenda of Mooresville and Walter Lee Sharpe and wife Jane of Taylorsville; four grandchildren, Benny H. Sharpe, Jr., of Taylorsville, Constance Irene Sharpe of Raleigh, Wesley Myles Sharpe and wife Hope of Taylorsville, and John Milton Sharpe of Elkin; two great-grandchildren, Seth Wayne Sharpe and Evan Myles Sharpe; three step-grandchildren, Mike Patton, David Patton, and Jack Patton; four step-great-grandchildren, Heather Patton, Brian Patton, Sara Patton, and Mike Patton; two sisters, Ober Pauley of Charlotte and Margaret Foster of Statesville; one brother, R.Z. Hendren and wife Lucille of Hiddenite; and three sisters-in-law, Mary Hendren, Frances Hendren, and Altha Mae Hall. She was preceded in death by four brothers, William Plato Hendren, D. Blake Hendren, Larkin Vance Hendren, and Edward Jack Hendren, and one sister, Fannie Grace Oliver. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Hiddenite United Methodist Church with Rev. Lynn Hawkins and Rev. Wade Wright officiating. Burial followed in the Taylorsville City Cemetery.

Vinna Mae Canter Joines, age 82, a resident of Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville and formerly of Joines Lane, Taylorsville, died Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Frye Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for ten years and seriously ill for two weeks. She was born in Alexander County February 28, 1922, the daughter of the late Floyd Canter and Vercie Bowles Canter. She was a housewife and a member of Rocky Face Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Joines, on October 12, 1998; a daughter, Doris Auton; a son, Jim Canter; a grandson, Scottie Canter; three sisters, Myrtle Kerley, Willie Bowles, and Glenny Canter; and three brothers, Ted Bowles, Atwell Bowles; and Waitsel Bowles. Survivors include four sons, Junior “Dude” Canter and wife Estelle and Jackie Joines and wife Lisa, all of Taylorsville, Gilbert Canter of Stony Point, and Gene Canter and wife Kay of Canton; one daughter, Linda Fox of Taylorsville; thirteen grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 6, 2004, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Taylorsville with Rev. Eddie Jolly officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alexander County, 50 Lucy Echerd Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681. Clara Irene Jones, age 80, of Black Oak Ridge Road, Taylorsville, died December 4, 2004, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville following an extended illness. Graveside services were held Sunday, December 5, 2004, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home of Stony Point was in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Jane Redmond, age 77, of Harris Bridge Road, Stony Point, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Chapman Funeral Home in Stony Point.

Madge W. Little, age 77, of Taylorsville, slipped peacefully into eternity Monday, December 6, 2004, at her home following an extended illness. She was a member of East Taylorsville Baptist Church and attended Steve Lackey’s Couples Sunday School Class. She was retired from Schneider Mills. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, James Ted Little; mother, Hettie Barnes Watts; father, Cub Watts; three brothers, Kelly Watts, Floyd Watts, and Harry Watts; one sister, Marie Robinette; and infant twins. Survivors include one sister, Margaret Rathje and husband Gene of Taylorsville; one brother, Steve Watts and wife Diane of Taylorsville; a number of nieces and nephews; five children, daughter Myrna Little, and four sons, Terry Little and wife Alice, Tony Little and wife Karen, Alvin Little, and Phil Little and wife Donna, all of Taylorsville; fifteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at East Taylorsville Baptist Church with Rev. Craig Hamlin and Rev. Jamie Steele officiating. Burial will follow in the Liledoun Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Alexander County, 50 Lucy Echerd Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681.

Joyce Ann Holbrook, age 43, of Taylorsville, died Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Frye Regional Medical Center. She was born March 8, 1961, the daughter of Edward Arlie Holbrook of Kannapolis and Wilma Evelyn Bare of Ferguson. She was of the Pentecostal faith. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one daughter, Amy Katherine Kim of Savannah, Ga.; one son, Dan Kim of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Bobby Lee Holbrook of Charleston, S.C., and Dave Thomas Dehn of St. Louis Park, Minn.; one sister, Debra Louise Hatfield of Taylorsville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 7, 2004, in the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel in Taylorsville. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Everette Eugene Richardson, age 45, of Climax, N.C., died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 7, 2004. Rev. Richardson is the son of Everette and Sue Richardson of Taylorsville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Adams Funeral Home in Taylorsville.

Dale Edward Price, age 53, of Hiddenite, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004. He was born in Iredell County August 23, 1951, the son of Jay Lee Price and Virginia Bell Price. He was a Lieutenant in the Statesville Fire Department, serving as an engineer, and also owned and operated Stony Point Plumbing. He was a member of the Stony Point Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Firemen’s Union Local 3137, and a member of Woodsman of the World and Big Brothers. A retired North Carolina National Guardsman, he served twenty-one years in Taylorsville and Wilkesboro. He held an associate degree from Catawba Valley Community College. In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife, Lori Pearson Price of the home; a step-daughter, Savana Pearson of the home; one son, Ashley Price of Stony Point; one daughter, Jamie Peoples and husband Michael of Griffin, N.C.; one brother, Larry Price and wife Twilla of Stony Point; one sister, Wanda Harrington and husband Donnie of Hiddenite; two nephews, Bradley Harrington and wife Kate of Bethlehem and Mark Harrington of Taylorsville; and two great-nieces, Darian Harrington of Taylorsville and Kaitlyn Harrington of Bethlehem. The family will receive friends at their respective homes. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 10, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at Liledoun Baptist Church in Taylorsville with Rev. James Bumgarner, James Orbison, and Richard Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Liledoun Cemetery with full military honors provided by D.A.V. Chapter 84 of Taylorsville. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour. Active and honorary pallbearers include members of the Statesville Fire Department and the North Carolina National Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liledoun Baptist Church, P.O. Box 475, Taylorsville, NC 28681 or to Hospice of Alexander County, 50 Lucy Echerd Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681. Paul Everette Dagenhart, age 77, of Old Landfill Rd., Taylorsville, died Sunday, December 5, 2004, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for five years, but death was unexpected. He was born December 19, 1926, the son of the late Ed Dagenhart and Clara Victoria Warren Dagenhart. He was a furniture upholsterer. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II. Mr. Dagenhart was a member of Mt. Wesley Wesleyan Church but also attended Sandy Ridge Wesleyan Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Bumgarner, and a brother, Ewell Dagenhart. Survivors include his wife, Alice Martin Dagenhart of the home; two daughters, Debra Speagle and husband Terry of Hickory and Susan Gwaltney of Huntersville; one son, Jeff Dagenhart and wife Didema of Hiddenite; two sisters, Hazel Barnes of Taylorsville and Frances Emo Elder of Winston-Salem; one brother, Earl Dagenhart of Taylorsville; six grandchildren, Stephanie Hefner, Nicole Simerly, Natalie Gwaltney, Kelly Speagle, Amber Dagenhart, and Brennan Dagenhart; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at Millersville Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Howard, Rev. Bill Orren, Rev. Jamie Simerly, and Rev. Eric Yelton officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Wesley Wesleyan Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by V.F.W. Post 10,000 of Hiddenite. Memorials may be made to Gideons International, Taylorsville Camp, P.O. Box 517, Taylorsville, NC 28681 or to the Mt. Wesley Wesleyan Building Fund, 403 Mt. Wesley Church Rd., Hiddenite, NC 28636. Glenn Perry Millsaps, age 41, of Adams Sigmon Lane, Stony Point, died Friday, December 3, 2004, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville following a brief illness. He was born in Alexander County March 23, 1963, the son of Grace Reavis Millsaps of the home and the late William Perry Millsaps. He attended Alexander County Schools and Mitchell Community College, where he earned several electrician certificates. He was employed in the textile industry and was a member of Stony Point Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include one son, William Perry Millsaps of the U.S. Air Force stationed in Texas; one sister, Jan M. James and husband Michael of Stony Point; and one brother, William Lee Millsaps of Stony Point. Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 5, 2004, at Stony Point Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Barefoot, Rev. Phil Addison, and Rev. Sidney Lanier officiating. Burial followed in the Stony Point Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Joe Millsaps, Jackie Millsaps, David Millsaps, David Baity, Jimmy Baity, and Rodney James. Honorary pallbearers included Michael Millsaps, Lamar Millsaps, Lynn Millsaps, Billy Millsaps, Chris Anderson, Jimmy Anderson, and Ben Anderson.
