Carole G. Akers, age 61, of Taylorsville, died Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Frye Regional Medical Center. She was born May 6, 1943, in Leesburg, Lake County, Florida, the daughter of the late John Bunyon Graves and Allene Myrtis Graves. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart "Stew" Akers and one son Ralph Stewart "Skip" Akers III.
She was a member of Millersville Baptist Church. Mrs. Akers worked as an accountant for the State of Florida and retired from Millersville Baptist Church Child Development Center. Survivors include; two daughters, Dawn Marie Gevat and husband Heath and Suzan Lam and husband Bill; one son, Kelly Akers and wife Sharon; one daughter-in-law, Ginger Akers; eight grandchildren, Brandon Gevat, Stewart Akers, Katie Akers, Amy Lam, Billy Lam, Aaron Akers, Gracie Akers and Amanda Lam. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19, 2005, at Millersville Baptist Church. Rev. Bill Orren and Rev. Eddie Jolly officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were provided by Alexander Funeral Service of Taylorsville.

Hilda M. Spillman, age 88, of Catawba County, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
She was born October 31, 1916, in Newbedford, MA, the daughter of the late Emanuel Mattos and Mary Dolores Lourdes Points Mattos. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Spillman and several brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Spillman was a member of Gateway Baptist Church where she was known as "Mom." She worked at Brian Center in Randleman, NC, as a dietician until her retirement. Survivors include one daughter, Dolores Finger of Conover; five grandchildren, Debra Finger of Hildebran, Karen Wallace of Hickory, Kevin Presnell of Asheville, Regina Woodruff of Lenoir, and Sonja Presnell of Bethlehem; five great-grandchildren, Aaron and Nichole Wallace of Hickory, Josh and Keisha Woodruff of Lenoir, and Brandon Presnell of Bethlehem; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19, 2005, at Gateway Baptist Church with Rev. Stan Frye officiatiating. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park in Randleman, NC. Pallbearers included Jake Curtis, Nick Stearns, Steve English, Todd Sudderth, Randy Carroll, and Wayne Speagle. Memorials may be made to Gateway Baptist Church, 3105 Sandy Ford Rd., Newton, NC 28658. Funeral arrangements were provided by Alexander Funeral Service of Taylorsville.

Kathy Jean Deese Engle, age 49, of Vale, died Friday, February 18, 2005, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. She was born July 20, 1955, in Catawba County, the daughter of Nancy Jane Mecimore Deese and the late William Albert Deese. She worked as a fixer at US Hosiery, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Tamela Carlton of Vale; three grandchildren, Christopher Barnes, Jose Rodriguez, and Mariana Rodriguez; her mother, Nancy Jane Deese of Scottsboro, AL; and two sisters. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements were provided by Alexander Funeral Service of Taylorsville.

Hubert Franklin Goble, age 74, of Newton, died Monday, February 21, 2005, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. He was born June 3, 1930, in Catawba County, the son of the late James Franklin Goble and Bessie Barlett Goble. He was retired from the furniture industry and was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Conover. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Ruth Goble; a son, Melvin Cletus Goble; two brothers, Claude Oren Goble and Loy Cleo Goble; and one sister, Betty Goble Winebarger. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth (Bud) Goble and wife Linda, and Teddie Goble and wife Carolyn, all of Conover, Paul Goble and wife Brenda of Lenoir, and Jimmy Goble and wife Betty of Taylorsville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Duncan and husband David, and Donna Gantt and husband Wayne, all of Conover; one brother, Floyd Cecil Goble of San Gabriel, CA; three sisters, Virginia Goble Hedrick and Ruby Goble Lail, both of Conover, and Carolyn Goble Duncan of Newton; the mother of his children, Louise Martin Goble of Conover; eleven grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 23, 2005, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Drum Funeral Home in Conover. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Linda and David Duncan, 4680 Rifle Range Road, Conover. A Service of Remembrance will be held Thursday, February 24, 2005, at 1 p.m., at St. Peters Lutheran Church. Rev. Paul Birner and Rev. Paul Sundbom will officiate. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour. Memorials may be made to St. Peters Lutheran Church Quilters, 6175 St. Peters Church Rd., Conover, NC 28613, or to Abernethy Laurels, 102 Leonard Avenue, Newton, NC 28658.

Charles Montie Deal, age 46, Statesville, was received by God on Friday, February 18, 2005, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. He was the son of Rebecca (Becky) Bolick McCarson and the late Jerry Nelson Deal. He was a member of Hickory Mennonite Church and was employed in the furniture industry.
In addition to his father, Mr. Deal was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Nelson, Deal, Jr. Survivors include his mother and step-father, Rebecca (Becky) Bolick McCarson and Warren V. McCarson of Hickory; two sisters, Regina Diane Deal of Taylorsville and Tina Deal Gallion of Morganton; one half brother, John Deal of Icard; two half sisters, Geri Harris of Hickory and Sherry Deal of Lincolnton; his fiancee, Sylvia Warren of Statesville; and his aunt, Barbara Jean Mecimore of Longview. Funeral services were held Monday, February 21, 2005, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James (Jim) Roth officiating. Memorials may be made to Hickory Mennonite Church, 5252 W. NC Hwy. 10, Hickory, NC 28602. Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory was in charge of arrangements. “Thank you O Lord My God, I Cried Unto Thee and Thou Hast Healed Me.”

Ralph Eugene Herman, age 82, of Claremont, died Friday, February 18, 2005, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville. He was born in Catawba County, March 2, 1922, the son of the late Hillary Herman and Adelaide Garris Herman. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Marshall Herman.
A member of Bethel Lutheran Church, he was retired from E.R. Carpenter where he worked as a security guard. Survivors include his wife, Frances Hollar Herman of the home; two daughters, Sandie Christenbury and husband Jim and Ginger Carpenter and husband Joe; three grandchildren, Jimmy Christenbury and wife Leanne, Mark Sigmon and wife Alicia, and Meleah Carpenter; two step-grandchildren, Joanna Carpenter Huffman and husband Jason and Paul Carpenter and wife Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Maggie Christenbury, and Mason Sigmon; two step-great-grandchildren, Drew and Jake Huffman; two sisters, Jean Ervin and husband Tommy of Troutman, and Thelma Lee of Charlotte; two special friends, Then Hollar and Clyde Fox, both of Claremont. Funeral services were held at Bethel Lutheran Church, Monday, February 21, 2005, with Pastor Craig Schultz officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Mark A. Sigmon, Jimmy D. Christenbury, Then Hollar, Tony Hollar, Gene Setzer, and Tyler Yancey. Memorials may be given to Bethel Lutheran Church, 5759 Bolick Rd., Claremont, NC 28610. Funeral arrangements were provided by Alexander Funeral Service of Taylorsville, NC. Frances Suzanna Eller Smith, age 83, of Moravian Falls, died Monday, February 21, 2005, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. She was born June 22, 1921, in Wilkes County, the daughter of the late Rev. Leroy Eller and Nancy Brooks Eller. She was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Daniel Lewis Smith, Sr.; two sons, F. R. Smith of the home and Daniel Junior Smith of Moravian Falls; one brother, Raymond Eller of Laurel Springs; two sisters, Annie Hardy of Union Grove, Mary Holland of Moravian Falls; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services were scheduled for Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Scenic Memorial Gardens with Rev. Mike Smith and Rev. Jay Johnson officiating.

Shirley B. Orinick, age 74, of Hiddenite, and formerly of South Canaan, PA, died Monday, February 14, 2005, at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Winston-Salem, following an illness. Born in Varden, PA, she was the daughter of the late Wesley Seeley and Mary Hoadley Seeley. She resided most of her life in the South Canaan area before moving to North Carolina thirteen years ago. Prior to retirement, she and her husband owned and operated the T & S Bar in Canaan Township for twenty years. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Emma Bronson, Beatrice Robinson, Margaret Field, Ann Marie Seeley, and Laura Evarts; six brothers, Harold, Leroy, Raymond, Lawrence, Gerald, and Robert. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ted Orinick; two sons, Ted Orinick and Steve Orinick, both of South Canaan, PA; one sister, Mildred Evarts of Scranton, PA; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19, 2005, at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Waymart, PA, conducted by Rev. William Rushik, pastor of South Canaan Free Methodist Church. Burial was in East Canaan Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Taylorsville was in charge of local arrangements.

Rachel Clanton Stikeleather, age 85, of Rosewood Assisted Living, Harmony and formerly of Stony Point, died Sunday, February 20, 2005. She was born in Iredell County, January 16, 1920, the daughter of the late Robert A. Clanton, Sr. and Ina Belle Sloan Clanton. She was a member of Stony Point United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir. Mrs. Stikeleather was a homemaker and was involved in crafts, gardening, and quilting. She loved flowers and music. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Brown Stikeleather in April, 1986; one brother, Raymond Clanton; an infant sister; and two grandchildren, Claretta Clendenin and Nicholas Stikeleather.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Larry Stikeleather and wife Ruth Ann of Raleigh and Danny Stikeleather and wife Ginny of Statesville; one daughter, Shirley Clendenin and husband Joe of Statesville; nine grandchildren, Ben Clendenin, Angela King, Thomas Clendenin and Johanan Clendenin, all of Statesville, Andrew Clendenin of Union Grove, Dr. Jeff Stikeleather of Cary, Laura Gunn of Raleigh, and Danny Ray Stikeleather and Aubrey Stikeleather, both of Stony Point; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Owen Clanton of Stony Point, Jim Clanton of Statesville, and Rev. Robert A. Clanton, Jr. of Statesville; and one sister, Macella Clanton Pharr of Statesville. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Stony Point United Methodist Church with Rev. Sidney Lanier and Rev. Mark Clontz officiating. Burial will follow in Stony Point Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service, and at other times will be at their respective homes. Mrs. Stikeleather’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be given to Stony Point United Methodist Church Choir Fund, P.O. Box 120, Stony Point, NC 28678. Stephanie Lane Comeaux Stikeleather, 42, of Millersville Rd., Taylorsville, died Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at her residence.
She was born January 23, 1965, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Frye Comeaux of Melbourne, Florida. She was of the Catholic faith and was employed as a Department Manager at Wal-Mart in Tayorsville.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Marice and Vertalee Comeaux.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Bradley Stikeleather of the home; one daughter, Caroline Stikeleather of the home; two brothers, Clinton Comeaux of Arkansas and Craig Comeaux of Arizona; and maternal grandparents, Edwin and Susie Cullity of Florida.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 18, 2007, at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Spears and Rev. James Byer officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers included Cameron Stikeleather, Jeremy Stikeleather, Clinton Comeaux, Craig Comeaux, Haze McFarland, and Donald Adams.

Emmett Roger Warren, Jr., 45, of Warren Acres Lane, Taylorsville, died Saturday, August 18, 2007, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
He was born December 29, 1961, in Mecklenburg County, the son of Emmett Roger Warren, Sr., and Phyllis Gardner Warren. He was a furniture worker and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Vickie Warren.
In addition to his parents, survivors include a step-son; Scott Jeffers Warren; two daughters, Jennifer Payne and husband Brian of Rickland, Va., and Samantha Warren of Tacoma, Wash.; three brothers, Jimmy Warren of Lincolnton, Michael Warren of Hickory, and Timothy Warren of Taylorsville; one sister, Susan Benfield of Taylorsville; and three grandchildren Jessica Payne, Logan Payne, and Micaela Payne.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 23, 2007, at the Chapman Funeral Home Chapel in Stony Point with Rev. Eric Yelton and Rev. Eddie Jolly officiating. Burial will follow at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Wesley Wesleyan Church, 420 Mt. Wesley Church Rd., Hiddenite, N.C. 28636.

William Matthews “Bill” Moore, 84, of Bowman Court, Taylorsville, died Saturday, August 18, 2007, at his residence.
He was born in Mecklenburg County July 25, 1923, the son of the late Joseph George Laman and Virginia Mullis Williams. He was a retired Automobile Industry Account Representative. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II, receiving a commendation for bravery.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kelda Crisp Moore, and a brother, Dan Laman.
Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Harwood and husband Andrew of the home and Susan DiMauro and husband Jeffrey of Bethlehem; a brother, Tom Moore of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, Brandon and Katelyn Harwood and Kellam and Aidan DiMauro.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 20, 2007, at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Dr. Jack Carver and Rev. Kenneth Lambert officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by D.A.V. Chapter 84 of Taylorsville.
