Flake Harrington
Flake Harrington, 96, of Taylorsville, peacefully went home to be with his Lord Thursday, January 11, 2007, at his residence.
He was born in Alexander County April 17, 1910, the son of the late Melton Parks Harrington and Minnie Lee Mayberry Harrington. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Harrington Orchards in Taylorsville. Mr. Harrington was also a farmer and an avid fox hunter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-seven years, Mary Jane Barnette Harrington; an infant son, Ernest Lee Harrington; three sisters, Ella H. Millsaps, Annie H. Campbell, and Flora Lee H. Barker; two brothers, Jay Dollie Harrington and Claude Harrington; and one granddaughter, Sandra Harring-ton.
Mr. Harrington is survived by two sons, Harold C. Harrington and wife Mildred and Raymond F. Harrington and wife Gaynell, all of Taylorsville; three daughters, Wanda Prichard and husband Clay of Hiddenite, and Loretta Robinson and husband Bill and Selena Harrington and husband Roger, all of Taylorsville; one sister, Nellie H. Branton of Hiddenite; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and special caregivers, Patsy Mitchell and Tina Cline, whose care allowed Mr. Harrington the enjoyment of remaining in his home.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 13, 2007, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Lander Hefner, Rev. Jerry Chatham, and Rev. Jeff Spry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with closing remarks by Charles Barnette.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Alexander County, 50 Lucy Echerd Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681.

Doris H. Blair
Doris Huckaby Blair, 80, of Martinsville, Va., died Saturday, December 23, 2006, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in LaFollette, Tenn., March 6, 1926, the daughter of the late Luther Clell Huckaby and Lora Tallent Huckaby Craver. She had been employed as a civilian in the Air Force in Virginia and the Washington, D.C., area, including Andrews Field, Md. She had also been an administrative assistant for Congressman William M. Tuck in South Boston, Va. Mrs. Blair was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville, Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Rhodes Blair; a sister, Olga H. Yates Rogero; and a brother, Byron T. Huckaby.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony “Tony” Blair of Taylorsville and Patrick Blair of Fort Rucker, Ala.; two grandchildren, Michael Blair of Taylorsville and Lara Blair of Martinsville, Va.; a step-grandchild, Danielle Blair of Taylorsville; and five nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was conducted Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at the Hollywood Baptist Church Cemetery in Callands, Va., with Dr. Dennis Knight officiating.
McKee-Stone Funeral Services of Martinsville, Va., was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas J. Jones
Thomas Jeffery Jones, 36, of Wilkesboro, died Friday, January 12, 2007, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Iredell County February 8, 1970, the son of Thomas Milo Jones of Statesville and Barbara Duncan Padgett of Wilkesboro. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, John Padgett of Statesville.
A memorial service was conducted Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapman Funeral Chapel in Stony Point with Rev. Marvin Church officiating. Burial will follow at a later date.

Muriel E. Montieth
Muriel Ann Elder Montieth, 68, of Taylorsville, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, January 14, 2007, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
She was born in Alexander County May 24, 1938, the daughter of the late Jay Edward Elder and Margaret Burke Elder. She was of the Baptist faith and had been employed with Bassett Furniture in Hiddenite for a number of years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nolan Eugene Montieth.
Survivors include two daughters, Christy Montieth and June Parker and husband Gary, all of Albany, Ga.; one son, Richard "Rick" Montieth of Taylorsville; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Stevenson of Hiddenite and Connie Nance of Taylorsville; one brother, William Elder of Hiddenite; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel in Taylorsville with Rev. Dale Milstead officiating. Burial followed in the Taylorsville City Cemetery.

Ruth W. Brumley
Ruth Wike Brumley, 81, of Kannapolis, died Friday, January 12, 2007, at Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County following an unexpected illness of three weeks. For the last twenty-one months, Mrs. Brumley had made her home at Concord Place Assisted Living Center in Concord, where she enjoyed participating in the numerous activities.
She was born in Alexander County August 12, 1925, the daughter of the late William Lawrence Wike and Cleo Deal Wike. Rearing her children on an Enochville farm, she attended to many duties at home as well as serving loyally for forty-five years at Cannon Mills.
Prior to failing health, she actively served in her church, Kannapolis Church of God, and the community.
She loved to sing in the sanctuary choir of Kannapolis Church of God and in the YMCA Senior Citizens Choir. Serving as President of the Queen Esther Sunday School Class and participating in the Lydia Ladies Circle brought her great joy.
Throughout the years, she touched many lives as she volunteered with Hospice, Meals on Wheels, Big Elm Nursing and Retirement Home, North East Medical Center as well as to numerous family members and friends in their times of need.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Raymond C. Brumley, in 1994; two sisters, Ruby Brigman and Thelma Warren; and three brothers, Atwell Wike, Lonnie Wike, and Ed Wike.
She is survived by two sons, Wayne Brumley and wife Jennie of Thomasville and Gary L. Brumley and wife Debbie of Kannapolis; three sisters, Mary Lou Kerley of Taylorsville and Janice Roscoe and husband Frank and Joyce Adams and husband Frankie, all of Kannapolis; a brother, Harold Wike and wife Nancy of Kannapolis; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 14, 2007, at Kannapolis Church of God with Pastor Sam Crisp officiating assisted by Pastor Perry Lemmons. Burial followed Monday morning, January 15, 2007, at the Bethpage United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Boy Scout Camp Rd., Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Phyllis W. Meredith
Phyllis Ann Warren Meredith, 50, of Statesville, died Thursday, January 11, 2007, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville.
She was born in Alexander County Novem-ber 8, 1956, the daughter of Kay S. Waugh of Taylorsville and the late Leonard Warren. She attended Gardner-Webb University to become certified in Sign Language. She was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 14, 2007, at the Chapman Funeral Home Chapel in Stony Point with Dr. Wayne Bennett officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville.

Robert Phillips, Jr.
Robert William Phillips, Jr., 50, of Stoneview Drive, North Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, January 10, 2007, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte following an illness of ten years.
He was born March 29, 1956, in Elkton, Md., the son of the late Robert William Phillips, Sr., and Phyllis Ann Petts Phillips Hutchison.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Vietnam War as a sergeant with the Special Forces and as an Army Ranger. Later, he was a sergeant with the Delaware Correctional Center, was a self-employed private investigator, and owned a home improvement business. He also was a tattoo artist and was a member of ABATE, a veterans’ motorcycle organization, and a member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include two sons, Robert William Phillips, III, of Thurmond, N.C., and Jason Phillips of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Dawn Phillips of the U.S. Army stationed in England; three sisters, Beverly Merkel of Spartanburg, S.C., Lisa VanHorn of Smyrna, Dela., and Hope Sheets of Roaring River; and a step-sister, Carol Martir of Trap Hill.
A memorial service was conducted Saturday, January 13, 2007, at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at a later date at Forest Cemetery in Middletown, Dela.

Jason L. Caldwell
Jason Lynn Caldwell, 24, of Jack Mitchell Dr., Taylorsville, died Saturday, January 13, 2007, at Frye Regional Medical Center - Alexander Campus in Taylorsville.
He was born February 3, 1982, the son of Michael Caldwell and wife Savonda of the Ellendale Community and mother Patsy Wike and husband Leslie of the home. A 2000 graduate of Alexander Central High School, he was a textile worker and was a member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Pauline Tedder.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a half-brother, Brandon Caldwell of the Ellendale Community; a sister, Ashley Wike of Taylorsville; a nephew, Cole Wike of Taylorsville; maternal grandfather, Bobby Tedder of the Sugar Loaf Community; paternal grandparents, Wade and Bobby Caldwell of Taylorsville; and a step-grandmother, Becky Wike of Hiddenite.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church with Rev. Horace Moree officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Virginia Link Frye
Virginia Link Frye, 92, of Sandy Ridge Road, Hickory, died Sunday, January 14, 2007, at Lutheran Home-West.
Born January 14, 1915, in Chase City, Va., she was the daughter of the later Luther and Annie Lou Suddreth Link. She was a faithful member of Smyrna Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Pope Hosiery Mill.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Dwight Link Hollar of Bethlehem and Nancy and James F. Waters of Hickory; a son, David Pope of Hickory; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of thirty-one years, Fred Patrick Pope, and second husband of nineteen years, Earl Lafayette Frye; one son, Harold Dean Pope; three sisters, Zelma Link, Mable Bowman, and Rosa Link; and one brother, Charles Link.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Smyrna Baptist Church with the Reverend Michael Barber officiating. Burial followed in Catawba Memorial Park.

Catherine R. Davis
Catherine "Cat" Rebecca Royal Davis, 84, of Taylorsville, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2007, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville.
She was born in Harnett County January 11, 1923, the daughter of the late Walter Royal and Kathleen Gertrude Edwards White Royal. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and had been employed at Shady Rest Home and at Southern Devices in Taylorsville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Benton Davis; six sisters, Betty Hildreth, Hazel Baxley, Janie Avery, Mabel McNeil, Lula Keller, and Clydie Iris Hefner; and two brothers, Murdock Royal and Robert Boyd Royal.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Smith and husband Bruce of Taylorsville and Millie Walton and husband George "Mandy" of Connelly Springs; one foster daughter, Ruth Johnson and husband Joe of Villa Platte, La.; seven grandchildren, Melissa Helton, Shane Sigmon, Rhonda Hamby, and Roger Smith, all of Taylorsville, Mitzi Banks of Albuquerque, N.M., Chad Smith of North Point, Fla., and Brandee Walton of Connelly Springs; seven great-grandchildren, Travis Pennell of Conover, Brandon Hamby, Dustin Hamby, Riley Smith, Casey Helton, Keyley Sigmon, and Kaden Sigmon, all of Taylorsville, De J. Banks and Shavon Banks, both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Zachary Smith of North Point, Fla.; one great-great-grandchild, Christopher Pennell of Conover; five foster grandchildren; ten foster great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Morris officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers included Chad Smith, Shane Sigmon, Roger Smith, Travis Pennell, Brandon Hamby, and Dustin Hamby. Honorary pallbearers included De J. Banks, Shanon Banks, Riley Smith, Casey Helton, Zachary Smith, Kaden Sigmon, and Christopher Pennell.

Janice C. Little
Mrs. Janice Margaret Corpening Little, 59, of Shadowood Dr., Taylorsville, entered eternity with the Lord on Thursday, January 11, 2007, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro following an extended illness.
She was born in Caldwell County July 17, 1947, the daughter of Helen Corpening Isbell of Lenoir and the late Tommy Isbell. She was a member of Bushtown Mennonite Brethren Church in Lenoir and currently attended New Zion Baptist Church in Taylorsville, where she loved singing in the choir, working as the Church Secretary, and was a member of the Missionary Society. She praised the Lord with gladness, and she went before His presence with singing. She formerly attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Greensboro and Mt. Olive Baptist Church in High Point. She retired after twenty years of service as an inspector with AMP, Inc., in Greensboro.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two nieces.
Celebrating her homegoing, in addition to her mother, are her husband of forty-three years, Rev. William Little of the home; one daughter, Janet Andrews and husband Dexter of Terry, Miss.; three sons, William Derek Little and wife Mary of Taylorsville, SSGT Julian Keith Little of the United States Air Force, Japan, and Joel Lamont Little of Taylorsville; four grandsons, Dominique Witworth, Julian Keith Little, Jr., and Devan and Jordan Andrews; four sisters, Diana Banner and husband John of Lenoir, Barbara Jean Hendrix and husband Warren and Brenda Patterson and husband Timothy, all of Greensboro, and Nancy Baker and husband Toress of Lenoir; one brother, Thomas Joseph Isbell, Jr., of Lenoir; a brother-in-law, Howard Little and wife Lucy of Taylorsville; two sisters-in-law, Winnie Faye Dula and husband Sam of Hickory and Mary Lois Flowers of Philadelphia, Penn.; two best friends, Daisy and Lois of Greensboro; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives; and a grand circle of friends.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, Hwy. 90 East, Taylorsville, with Rev. Vincent Linney presiding assisted by Rev. Jeffrey Miller, Rev. James Wilfong, Rev. Ray Bellamy, and Rev. James B. Little. Burial followed in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Romie L. Bennett
Romie Leroy Bennett, 62, of Oak Knoll Dr., Statesville, died Saturday, January 20, 2007, at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville.
He was born in Alexander County January 16, 1945, the son of Essie Mae Poole Bennett of Hiddenite and the late Clemmons Bennett. He was self-employed.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Kay Bennett.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a close friend, Celcia Windstead of the home; four sons, Anthony Bennett of Statesville, Stephen Bennett of Shelby, Todd Bennett of Shelby, and Jaden Bennett of Statesville; four daughters, Faith Robbs of Spartanburg, S.C., Joanne
Bennett of Shelby, Joy Flowers Taylorsville, and Debra Bennett of Taylorsville; three brothers, Larry Poole of Hiddenite, Harrison Bennett of Taylorsville, and Jimmy Bennett and wife Anita of Hiddenite; four sisters, Paulette Jones of Hiddenite, Jackey Payne and husband Charley of Taylorsville, Patricia Keaton of Stony Point, and Melissa Ferguson of Stony Point; a brother-in-law, Michael Keaton of Greensboro; fourteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. at Zion AME Chapel with Rev. Ernest Stenson and Rev. Leroy Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
