Marvin Erickson, 89, once of Fountain
Marvin Erickson, 89, formerly of Fountain, died on Thursday, March 26, 1998, at his home in Austin.
He was born March 24, 1909, in Fountain. On July 18, 1935, he married Burnice "Bunny" Jensen in Alden, Minn. He worked at Hormel Foods Corp., in Austin, for 29 years. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and enjoyed flowers, fishing, gardening, travel, carpentry, and sports.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Carol Cottingham; one son, Chuck; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a nephew, David Gudmundson of Fountain. One sister preceded him in death.
The funeral was held Wednesday, April 1, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Rev. Harold Usgaard officiating. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery, Austin.

R. Espe, 73, brother of Spring Grove man
Richard L. Espe, 73, of Austin, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Austin Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 28, 1924, in Ramsey, Minn., and served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 12, 1948, he married Dorothy J. Fischer in Austin. She died June 22, 1992. Mr. Espe was a roofer for Hill Heating and Roofing for 36 years. He enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Espe and Lori Espe-Middleton, both of Austin; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Sylvester, Raymond and Leonard, all of Austin, and Paul of Spring Grove; four sisters, Evangeline Reimann of St. Francis, Minn., Alice (Mrs. Harold) Wiste of Adams, Dorothy (Mrs. Reese) Butterfield of McIntire, Iowa, and Annabel Peterson of Austin. He was preceded in death by a son, a grandson, a brother and two sisters.
A funeral Mass was held on Thursday at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Austin with the Revs. Hubert Boschert and Donald Zenk co-officiating. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery in Austin.

Carmen Evenson, 86, formerly of Canton
Carmen C. Evenson, 86, of Chatfield, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.
She was born on May 19, 1911, in Canton to Ernest and Edith (Harsh) Woodle. She graduated from the Canton High School and on July 1, 1929, she married Gerhard Evenson in Canton. They owned and operated the Amherst Store in Amherst Township, Fillmore County, for 12 years until 1952 and then the Terrace Motel in Eagan, Minn., for 22 years before retiring in Rochester. In February, 1997, she became a resident at the Chosen Valley Care Center where Gerhard has resided since June, 1995.
Carmen is survived by her husband Gerhard; a son, Robert of Sac City, Iowa; two daughters, Janice (Mrs. Clifford) McCabe of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Judy (Mrs. Wally) Brekke of Bloomington, Minn.; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Erickson of Houston. Two sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services were Tuesday at the Henrytown Lutheran Church, rural Canton, with the Rev. Chad Brekke officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Dorothy Ewalt, 72, of Harmony
Dorothy Wanless Ewalt, 72, died at Harmony Community Hospital on Sept. 25, 1998.
She was born on May 22, 1926, at Burr Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Forrest and Mary (Brown) Wanless.
She graduated from Canton High School and attended Luther College for a year and started teaching school in rural Iowa. On June 7, 1947, she married Clinton Ewalt and they farmed in the Harmony area. She returned to Luther College to further her studies and graduated in l971. She taught elementary school in Preston for 20 years.
Survivors include her husband, Clinton of Harmony; three sons, Scott Ewalt and Dana Ewalt of Harmony, and Glendon Ewalt of Grand Marais, Minn; three grandchildren, four brothers; one half brother and one half sister. She was preceded in death by her parents, two half brothers and a half sister.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday at the Root River Church of the Brethren, with burial in the Prairie Queen Cemetery adjacent to the church. The Rev. Francis Townsend officiated. The family suggests memorials to the Cancer Fund.

Louis A. Feine, 79, of Rushford
Louis A. Feine, 79, of Rushford, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born June 20, 1918, near Hart in Winona County. He grew up near Hart and attended school there. He entered the Army in 1942 and was injured at Normandy Beach and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He married Dolores "Dolly" Mierau on Dec. 15, 1945. He farmed in the Hart area until his retirement in 1978 when he and his wife moved to Rushford.
He was a member of the church council at St. John's Lutheran Church and was a representative of Lutheran Layman's League. He also was on the Hart Creamery Board, Hart Farm Service Board, Farmers Elevator Board and Money Creek Township Board. He was director of the Sauer Memorial Board in Winona.
He also was a member of the Disabled American Veterans in Winona, VFW in Rushford and the Murphy-Johnson American Legion Post in Rushford.
Survivors include his wife of Rushford; three sons, Dale of San Diego, Roy of Blaine, Minn., and Thomas of Rushford; two daughters, Marcia (Mrs. Dale) Van Vreede of Maple Grove, Minn., and Rochelle (Mrs. Craig) Cornell of Spring Valley; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Victor of Ostrander, Minn., and Vernon of Rushford; three sisters, Clarine (Mrs. William) Erdmann of Winona, Villa (Mrs. Lester) Holz of Winona and Vernice Popa of Westminster, Calif.
The funeral was Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hart, Minn., with the Rev. Roger James officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.

Herbert Ferguson, brother of local woman
Herbert N. Ferguson, 78, of Chatfield, died Sunday evening, Sept. 20, 1998, at his home of complications following strokes.
Mr. Ferguson was born July 1, 1920, in Pilot Mound Township, Fillmore County, rural Chatfield, and lived in the area all his life. He married Madelyn Holtegaard and they were later divorced. On July 2, 1960, he married Mary Hanson in Preston. She is employed at Holiday Inn South in Rochester. Mr. Ferguson was a truck driver for Quarve and Anderson for 37 years and a member of Teamsters Union Local 160.
In addition to his wife, survivors include six sons, Dennis of Rochester, Robert and Terry, both of Pine Island, Gary of Mankato, Lawrence of Stanley, Wis., and Neil of Las Vegas; four daughters, Beverly Ferguson of Minnetonka, Minn., Helen (Mrs. Roy) Radke and Susan (Mrs. Jerry) Kuehn, both of Rochester, and Virginia (Mrs. Jeffrey) Johnson of Kasson; 21 grandchildren; and a sister, Grace (Mrs. Carl) Berge of Harmony. A daughter and two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services were Friday at the United Methodist Church in Chatfield with the Rev. Richard G. Jones officiating. Burial was in the Northeast Pilot Mound Cemetery.

Curtis Lester Fimon, 39, Spring Valley native
Curtis Lester Fimon of Stewartville died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at his home of a heart attack.
He was born September 13, 1958, at Spring Valley, grew up on the family farm at rural Spring Valley, graduating from Spring Valley High School in 1977. He graduated in diesel mechanics at Albert Lea Vocational School in 1980. He has been employed at Universal Ford-Toyota in Rochester from 1981 till the present. He married Teresa Flintrop on April 30, 1983, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca, Minn.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Kimberly, and son, Charles, both at home; his parents, Violet and Lester Fimon of rural Spring Valley; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Margaret and Joseph Flintrop of rural Waseca.
Funeral services were Sunday, May 31, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Burial was at Frankford Cemetery, rural Spring Valley.

Russell E. Finke, 75, formerly of Cherry Grove
Russell E. Finke of Mounds View, Minn., died Sept. 29, 1998, from cancer and complications.
He was born Sept. 11, 1923, in Fillmore County and grew up in the Cherry Grove area. He served in the Air Force during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jessie. The survivors are his wife, Lucille; son, David; stepchildren, Sue (Don) Sturtvevant, Greg (Mary) Doty and Gary (Jody) Doty and five grandchildren. Also, his father, Raymond; brothers Kenneth (Ardys) Finke; John (Bernis) Finke and Paul (June) Finke; sisters, Beth (Eugene) Mulhern and Thelma Hur and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
Services were held Monday, Oct. 4 at the Sunrise United Methodist Church in Mounds View and interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Alpha D. Finneseth, 96, of Spring Valley
Alpha D. Finneseth, 96, a homemaker, formerly of Spring Valley, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Burr Oak Care Center in Austin.
Alpha Rain was born June 4, 1901, at home in Pilot Mound Township, Fillmore County, the daughter of John and Hannah (Moen) Rain. She was baptized and confirmed at the Root River Prairie Lutheran Church near Fountain. As a young woman, she was a seamstress. She married Lloyd Tillman Finneseth at her home near Fountain on Feb. 25, 1927. After her marriage the couple moved to Spring Valley where she lived until September 1984, when she became a resident of Burr Oak Manor in Austin. Her husband died in 1977.
She was a charter member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and continued her membership until her death. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of Mary Circle and a life member of WELCA of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was a volunteer with Spring Valley Hospital Auxiliary for many years. During the past 14 years at Burr Oak Manor she participated in many of the activities provided. She especially enjoyed crafts and won several ribbons for her handwork at the Mower County Fair.
She is survived by sons, Robert (Roberta) of Austin; Jack (Kay) of Jefferson, Iowa; grandchildren Scott Finneseth, Steve Finneseth, Karon Rynerson and Susan Leachman; two great-grandsons and five great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
The funeral was Sunday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. Jon Olson officiating. Burial in Spring Valley Cemetery.

Helen M. Finney, 83, formerly of Canton
Helen M. Finney, 83, formerly of Canton, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at the Harmony Community Nursing Home in Harmony.
She was born on June 2, 1915, in Sparta, Wis., to Leo and Maria (King) Helgeson. She graduated from the Canton High School in 1933 and on June 10, 1933, she married Ronald Finney in Canton. The couple farmed in Canton Township, Fillmore County, until Ronald died on Sept. 6, 1996. Mrs. Finney then became a resident of the Harmony Community Nursing Home. She was a member of the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church in Canton.
She is survived by a son Robert (Kay) of Austin; a daughter Bonnie (Mrs. Ardell) Fossum of Canton; three grandchildren Kirsten, Kyle (Robyn), and Nathan Finney all of Austin; two brothers, Thomas (Judy) of Spring Grove, Ill., and Eugene (Louise) of Harrisburg, Ill.; six sisters, Mildred Webb and Frances Landis both of Elgin, Ill., Mary Wade of Myrtle Creek, Ore., Betty (Mrs. Gordon) Fortman of Columbus, Ohio, and Yvonne (Mrs. Robert) Frey of South Elgin, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a granddaughter, and one sister.
Funeral service was on Monday, June 15, at the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church in Canton with the Rev. Jim Scaife officiating. Burial in the Lenora Cemetery, rural Canton. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.

Ida J. Finseth, 92, Fountain native
Ida J. Finseth, 92, of Chatfield, formerly of the Fountain area and Rochester, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, where she had lived since September 1996.
She was born Ida J. Redalen on April 29, 1906, in rural Fountain and grew up in the area. On Oct. 16, 1929, she married T. Reinhart Finseth in Lanesboro. They moved to Rochester in 1959. Her husband died June 12, 1965. She was a member of Root Prairie Lutheran Church and the WELCA and taught Sunday School.
Survivors include a son, David of Rochester; four daughters, Ruth (Mrs. Paul) Nelson of Rochester, Beverly Spring of Largo, Fla., Illa Kraling of West Pueblo, Colo., and Nancy (Mrs. Donald) Hoelscher of Cupertino, Calif; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four grandchildren; four brothers, three half-brothers, seven sisters and two half-sisters.
The funeral was held at Root Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Fountain on Wednesday with the Rev. John W. Sime officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Joseph 'Joe' E. Fitzthum, 88, Wykoff native
Joseph "Joe" E. Fitzthum, 88, of Wykoff died Thursday Sept. 24, 1998, at the Ostrander Care Center.
He was born Feb. 19, 1910, in rural Wykoff, the son of Joseph and Emma Lydia (Affeldt) Fitzthum.
He married Thusnelda "Nelda" Schumacher Sept. 1, 1936, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff. The couple farmed in the Wykoff area until their retirement when they moved into Wykoff. He became a resident of the Ostrander Care Center in 1995. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
The funeral was Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff with the Rev. Karl Hollibaugh officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. The family prefers memorials be given to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Thusnelda 'Nelda' Fitzthum, 83, of Wykoff
Thusnelda "Nelda" Fitzthum, 83, of Wykoff, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at the Spring Valley Care Center.
The former Thusnelda Schumacher was born Aug. 1, 1915, in rural Spring Valley, the daughter of Will and Ida (Lottes) Schumacher. She attended rural schools and was a graduate of Wykoff High School.
She married Joseph "Joe" Fitzthum Sept. 1, 1936, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff. The couple farmed in the Wykoff area until their retirement, when they moved into Wykoff. He died Sept. 24, 1998. She became a resident of the Spring Valley Care Center in 1995.
She was a longtime member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff, where she had been active in its Ladies Aid.
She is survived by one brother, Norman Schumacher of Shoreview, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Otto, Walter and Paul.
The funeral was Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karl Hollibaugh officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family prefers memorials be given to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Verona I. Fjelstad, 88, of Stewartville
Verona I. Fjelstad, 88, of Stewartville, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Stewartville Care Center, where she had resided since November 1997.
Verona I. Milbrath was born Nov. 4, 1909, in Spring Valley, moved with her family to a farm near Chester, Iowa, and grew up there. She attended Blue Bell country school and Chester High School, and then worked on the farm until her marriage. On Sept. 30, 1933, she married Henry Fjelstad in Chester, Iowa, and they farmed in the Wykoff area until moving into Wykoff in 1966. Her husband died in 1982. She had resided in Stewartville since 1989. She was a longtime member of Wykoff United Methodist Church and was active in its choir and Women's Society. She was secretary/treasurer of the Wykoff Cemetery Board for 22 years, was a member of the Happy Hearts Homemakers extension group and enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Winifred (Mrs. Ronald) Gathje of Stewartville; two sons, Gilbert of Stewartville and Herbert of Zumbro Falls; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Marcella Hamann of LeRoy and Joan Schonsby of Austin. Four sisters and a stepbrother preceded her in death.
The funeral was Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville, with the Rev. Jack Haddorf officiating. Burial in the Wykoff Cemetery.

Maynard O. Folstad, 69, of Hesper
Maynard O. Folstad, 69, of Hesper, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel following a lengthy fight with cancer.
He was born on Feb. 17, 1928, in Spring Grove to Martin and Olga (Klegseth) Folstad. He was confirmed at the Hesper Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member, and graduated from Mabel High School. In 1955 he married Mabel Reha, and they were later divorced. In 1976 he married Florence Hexom. Maynard farmed in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, until 1983 when he and his wife farmed in the Waukon, Iowa, area. After Mrs. Folstad's death in 1987 he returned to Hesper Township to continue farming with his son Mark.
Mr. Folstad is survived by two sons, Mark of rural Mabel and Alvin of Houston; a daughter, Sandra Folstad of Decorah; a brother, Arland of rural Mabel; a sister, Beatrice Schmitz of Caledonia; and his first wife, Mabel Folstad of Decorah. He was preceded in death by his second wife, his parents, and three brothers, Elmer, Melvin, and Charles.
Funeral services will be today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. A private burial will be at a later date in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.

David Jesse Foltz, 31, Harmony
David Jesse Foltz, 31, of Harmony, an employee of Harmony Enterprises, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at his home, where he had resided for three years.
He was born April 8, 1967, in Spearfish, S. D. After graduating from Spearfish High School in 1985, he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. Mr. Foltz enjoyed camping, fishing and darts.
Survivors include a son, Tyler of Livingston, Mont.; a daughter, Christine of Wazeka, Wis.; his father, Manford Foltz of Spearfish; two brothers, Don of Emporia, Kan., and Sid of Spearfish; a sister, Judy of Los Angeles; and special friend, Lori, of Harmony. His mother preceded him in death.
The funeral was Wednesday at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, with the Revs. Jon Sorum and Ann Sorum co-officiating. Burial was in Big Spring Cemetery in Harmony.

Ruth L. Forland, 74, of Ostrander
Ruth Forland, 74, of Ostrander, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Rochester Methodist Hospital.
Ruth L. Rowe was born March 22, 1923, in Howard County, Iowa. On April 2, 1943, she married Melvin Forland in Cherry Grove. Her husband was a farmer. He died in 1992. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki (Mrs. Larry) Tiedemann of Winona, Minn.; her granddaughter, Sarah Tiedemann; three grandsons, Jess, Matthew, and Marc Tiedemann; and one sister, Elsie (Mrs. Marvin) Edwards of Charles City, Iowa, many nieces and nephews, and a vast number of good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and one brother.
She loved flower gardening, cooking and the visits with countless friends and neighbors.
The funeral was Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander with the Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial in Bloomfield Lutheran Cemetery in Ostrander.
Karen Vreeman was the organist. Honorary casketbearers were Jeanie Miller, Gail Rendahl and Carroll Vigum. Active casketbearers were Dale Edwards, Guy Edwards, David Forland, Glen Halverson, Lyle Kenney and Danny Schwartz.

Betty L. Frankson, 81, formerly of SV
Betty L. Frankson, 81, of Chatfield, formerly of the Preston-Lanesboro area, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.
Betty L. Ranger was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Graceville, Minn., the daughter of Brad (B.W.) and Marvel (Hogan) Ranger and graduated from high school in Villard, Minn. She later moved to Spring Valley and married Darrell Frankson on March 5, 1935, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Spring Valley. Her husband worked in construction and they eventually settled in Watertown, S.D. She was a homemaker and beautician. The couple returned to the Preston-Lanesboro area after their retirement in 1981. Her husband died Jan 12, 1992. She was a past president and charter member of the Humane Society in Watertown.
Survivors include a son, James of Merritt Island, Fla.; a daughter, Connie Walsh of Chatfield; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Moseley of Columbia, Mo. A brother preceded her in death.
The funeral was Sunday at St. Columban's Catholic Church in Preston with the Rev. Tom Loomis officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in rural Preston.

Darrell R. Freiheit, 64, Wykoff native
Darrell R. Freiheit, 64, of rural Preston, a farmer, died Monday, April 27, 1998, at his home.
He was born Aug. 19, 1933, in Wykoff. On Aug. 17, 1953, he married Shirley Thompson in Preston and together they farmed in the area for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Spring Valley American Legion and Spring Valley VFW.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John of Wykoff and Nicholas of Bloomington, Minn.; four grandchildren; a brother, Wendell of Wykoff; and two sisters, Shirley Iverson of Spring Valley and LaDonna Lindquist of Evansdale, Iowa; and his loyal friend, Sady. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral was April 30 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wykoff with the Rev. Bruce Bringle officiating. Burial was in Dr. Martin Luther Cemetery in Spring Valley Township. John Ernest Freimark, 96, of Spring Valley
John Ernest Freimark, 96, of Spring Valley, a longtime area farmer, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Spring Valley Care Center, where he had resided since August.
He was born July 9, 1902, in rural Wykoff and attended Wykoff area rural schools. On Oct. 2, 1934, he married Irene Meyer at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wykoff. He was a lifelong Spring Valley-Wykoff area resident and farmed in the Spring Valley area all his working life. He was a charter member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He served on the District 195 school board, was a former county assessor and worked part time at the ASC office in Preston.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Darlene (Mrs. Art) Jordahl of Rochester and Janice (Mrs. Marlo) Mensink of Cherry Grove; three sons, the Rev. Ronald of Sleepy Eye, Minn., Gerald of Whitehall, Wis., and Kenneth of Stillwater, Minn., 14 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren preceded him in death.
The funeral was Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Revs. Jon Olson and Marlene Pankonin co-officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

L. E. Freimark, 56, daughter-in-law of SV couple
Lorayne Emma Freimark, 56, died July 29, 1998, after a difficult struggle with cancer.
She was born Feb. 8, 1942, in Shakopee, Minn., the daughter of Edwin and Edna (Kessler) Stier. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School and Mankato Beauty School. She married Rev. Ronald J. Freimark Sept. 26, 1964. Following their marriage, the couple lived three years in Blue Island, Ill, 10 years in Cosmos, Minn., and the past 21 years in Sleepy Eye. She worked as a receptionist at the Orchid Inn for 14 years and one year at Mark Thomas Co.
She served her church in many capacities, especially in the music and education departments. She was a gracious hostess who welcomed many people into her home and church. She enjoyed her family, baking, cooking, flower gardening, music, crafts, and having coffee with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Julie and husband, Jeff Goldsmith, of Hutchinson, and Joy and husband, Fred Henke, of Woodbury; two granddaughters, Kathryn Goldsmith and Meridith Henke; two brothers, Earl Stier of Belle Plaine, and Lyle and wife, Doris Stier, of Henderson; brother-in-law, Richard and wife, Dara Lee Tillquist of Belle Plaine; four nieces; and two grandnieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, Ruth Stier; and sister, Elverna Tillquist.
Funeral services were Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Oakland Cemetery.

Nellie G. Fryer, 86, mother of Lanesboro man
Nellie G. Fryer, 86, of Rochester, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Samaritan Bethany Heights.
Nellie G. Snow was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Alberta, Canada, moved to Minnesota as a child with her family and graduated from Rochester High School. On April 25, 1929, she married Harry B. Fryer in Minneapolis. He died in 1984. Mrs. Fryer was a homemaker and worked at Knowlton's Department Store, Monte's, Woolworth's and Massey's. She lived at Fontaine Towers for 10 years before entering the nursing home in Oct. 1997. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and its Altar Society and the Chatter Club.
Survivors include three sons, Richard of Shorewood, Minn., Robert of Lanesboro and Charles of Fairbury, Neb.; three daughters, Nellie "Gail" Fieck of Racine, Nancy J. O'Neill of Rochester and Pamela Gilsrud of Hartley, Texas; 30 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Domke of Nora Springs, Iowa. A brother preceded her in death.
A Mass of Christian burial was offered on Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. Andrew Beerman officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Laura Fuhrmeister, 93, formerly of Spring Valley
Laura E. Fuhrmeister, 93, of Albert Lea and Spring Valley, died from complications of cancer Monday, April 6, 1998, at St. John's Lutheran Home in Albert Lea.
She was born Sept. 26, 1904 in Groten, S.D. to Edward and Emilie (Radloff) Bertalot. She moved to Spring Valley with her parents and two brothers and later graduated from high school there. On July 16, 1923 she married Frank Fuhrmeister in Faribault. After a year they moved to Spring Valley, then to Rochester in 1933. Their son Charles was born in 1938 and, in 1965, he was killed in an auto accident. Frank died in 1968.
On Dec. 1, 1979 she married Leslie Kinsley and resided in Rochester. He died in 1988.
In Spring Valley she worked at Granum's Bakery, the Farmer's Store and People's Telephone. She was a member of the Congregational/ United Church of Christ church of Rochester, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Telephone Pioneers of America and Senior Citizens in Rochester and Brownsville. She also belonged to Honeydale Park in Brownsville.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Miller of Phoenix, Ariz., stepson David Kinsley and wife Laurita of Cotton, Minn., nieces Marcella Boyland (Mrs. Henry) of Ames, Iowa, Marjorie Block of Vinton, Iowa, Dorothy Jahns of Albert Lea, a nephew Darrell Freeman (June) of Spring Valley, a sister-in-law Agnes Groth of Ostrander, and cousins Pearl Shinaberger of Sturgis, S.D., Blanche Hauer of Mobridge, S.D., Irvin Radloff (Ruth) and Hulda Witte all of Hector, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter Francis and a son Charles, two brothers Burton and Earl Bertalot, and two husbands Frank and Les.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 9, at the Congregational/United Church of Christ in Rochester.

Cindy Furlong, 39, formerly of Wykoff
Cynthia Ann Furlong, 39, of Red Wing died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at her home from complications of a year-long illness.
She was born Feb. 26, 1959, in Rochester, the daughter of Melvin and Edith (Sutherland) Eickhoff.
She graduated from Wykoff High School in 1977. She then married John Furlong on May 17, 1980. She worked at Red Wing Shoe Company, and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, camping with her family and the great outdoors.
She is survived by her husband, John; two daughters, Sarah and Lisa; and one son, Brad, at home; her parents, Melvin and Edith Eickhoff of Wykoff; one brother, David (Sandy) Eickhoff of Zumbrota; two sisters, Diane (Dean) Ramaker of Racine, and Betty Cox of Wykoff.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Marian Eisenmann officiating. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing.
