Pauline Queensland, 59, former SV resident
Pauline Y. Queensland, 59, of rural Adams, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
She was born Oct. 18, 1941, in Spring Valley, to Albert and V. Vivian (Hegg) Ruud. She graduated in the class of 1959 from Spring Valley High School. After high school she was employed by Saint Marys Hospital as a surgical recorder. On April 15, 1961, she married John Queensland at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley. They farmed and lived by Grand Meadow until 1968 when they moved to a farm near Adams. She was a homemaker and took care of her children. She was very active at Marshall Lutheran Church where she was a member working with the Ladies Aid and as a Sunday School teacher. She also was actively involved in the community, helping others, including working at D.A.C. in Adams. Some of her hobbies included sewing and painting, doing yard work, gardening, and taking care of the flowers at the CRCC golf club. She also loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She had recently worked at the Farr Corporation in LeRoy, doing some marketing for the assisted living complex in LeRoy.
She is survived by her husband, a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Steve Speer of LeRoy; sons and daughters-in-law, Curtis Queensland of Rochester and David and Mali Queensland of Byron; four grandchildren, Megan and Chelsey Speer of LeRoy, and Tyler and Haylee Queensland of Byron; sisters and brothers-in-law, Alleen and Richard Watson of Preston, Ramona and G. Roger Gilbert of Spring Valley, Priscilla Munns of Canton and Cindy Johnson of Spring Valley; a brother, Orville Ruud of Rochester; also many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Veronica Ruud.
Funeral services were held Monday at Marshall Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dick Kastner officiating. Interment in the Marshall Lutheran Cemetery in Marshall Township.

L. K. Quickstad, 74, former GM resident
Laurel K. 'Doc' Quickstad, 74, of Austin, died Feb. 12, 2001, at his home following a short illness with cancer.
He was born Feb. 28, 1927, in Waseca, Minn., attended Grand Meadow schools and graduated from Austin High School in 1945. On Jan. 24, 1964, he married June Richardson Slater at the Methodist Church in Rochester. He was caretaker of Oakwood Cemetery for more than 25 years. He was a past member of the Moose and Eagles lodges and St. Olaf Lutheran Church and enjoyed playing cards, going to casinos, watching football and listening to country music.
Survivors include his wife; and two sisters, Dorothy Olson of Rochester and Bernice Hynie of Austin. He was preceded in death by a stepson, two brothers and two sisters.
Graveside services were held in Grandview Cemetery in Austin, with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating.
Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin was in charge of arrangements.

Betty M. Rain, 70, of Fountain
Betty M. Rain, 70, of Fountain, a farm homemaker, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in the emergency room of Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Betty M. Trogstad was born April 12, 1931, in Pilot Mound and graduated from Chatfield High School in 1949. On Sept. 21, 1952, she married Tilford Rain at Pilot Mound Lutheran Church. They farmed in the Fountain area, and she also baked cakes for area weddings and birthdays for 15 years. She was a member of Root Prairie Lutheran Church and enjoyed farm work.
Survivors include her husband; four brothers, Orval (Audrey) Trogstad of Fountain, Edne (Ramona) Trogstad of Rochester, Elmer (Elaine) Trogstad of Chatfield and Arlis "Sonny" Trogstad of Dover; and three sisters, Ethel (Arthur) Becker of Austin, Olive (Leon) Thorson of Chatfield and Ruby Olsen of Pine Island. Two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
The funeral was Wednesday at Root Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Fountain, with the Rev. Curtis Fox officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield was in charge of arrangements.

Norman 'Vernon' Rasmussen, 77, of Mabel
Norman 'Vernon' Rasmussen, 77, of rural Mabel, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
He was born July 10, 1923, in Winneshiek County, Iowa, to Jens and Stella (Rosendahl) Rasmussen. On Oct. 22, 1950, he married Lylas Gjetley in Newton, Iowa. The couple farmed near Hesper since 1956. He was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and enjoyed his grandchildren and working on the farm.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Gary) Hanson of Spring Grove, Sheila (Mrs. Tom) Norby of Canton, and Carol (Mrs. Gordon) Gaustad of Decorah; three sons, Alan (Kris) of Decorah, Dean and Craig (Joan) both of Mabel; 11 grandchildren, Angela (Mrs. Jeff) Norby—Bennett, Holly (Mrs. Bill) Norby-Cox, Melissa Norby, Valerie (Mrs. Russ) Peterson-Horner, Lisa, Jennifer and Andy Rasmussen, Emily Gaustad, Jessie, Heather and Kayla Rasmussen; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ray (Grace) and Ervin (Arlene) both of Decorah; and two sisters, Mae (Mrs. Norman) Brynsaas and Selma (Mrs. Russell) Nelson, both of Decorah. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Fay Whalen; two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were Friday at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial was at the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.

Genora Rauk, 101, of Spring Grove
Genora Sylling Rauk, 101, of Spring Grove, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Tweeten Health Services in Spring Grove.
She was born Aug. 11, 1899, in Sheyenne, N.D., to Helmer and Caroline (Quarve) Sylling, and she moved to Spring Grove when she was 11 years old. She was a 1918 Spring Grove High School graduate and received a year of normal teachers training in LaCrosse. On Feb. 2, 1923, she married Emil Henry Rauk, he died in February of 1964. She worked at the Spring Grove Post Office from 1922 to 1923. She was the chief operator for the Spring Grove Telephone Office for 50 years.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove and its women’s groups. She was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary of which she was a member for 74 years, she was a past member of the Sons of Norway, and she was named Mest Hoyaktet Dame (Most Honored Lady) of Spring Grove’s Syttende Mai.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley (William D.) Turner-Henderson of North Carolina; a daughter-in-law, Jean Rauk of Rochester; four grandchildren, William D. Turner, Jr., Robert Neil Turner, Philip Neil Rauk, and Michele Suzanne Rauk; four great-grandchildren, Mary Taran Turner, Kali Rauk Nelson, Riana Rauk Nelson and Gage Neil Nelson. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Neil; one brother, George Sylling; and three sisters, Bertha Sylling Tweeten, Jeanette Zabrocki, and Harriet Trygstad.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Jim Arends officiated.

Thomas Rauk, 20, once of Preston
Thomas Rauk, 20, of Kenyon, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, from injuries received in a motorcycle accident.
Thomas Joseph Rauk was born July 25, 1981, to Rodney and Elaine Rauk. He grew up in the Nerstrand area, moving to Kenyon in 1995. He graduated from Kenyon/Wanamingo schools, graduating in 2000 and was captain of the football team and homecoming king in his senior year. He played football and basketball at Fillmore Central during his freshman year, while he and his mother lived in Preston. He was soon to return to Southwest State College in Marshall for his sophomore year. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and taught first grade Sunday school. He was an active 4-H member. He loved canoeing, tubing, farming with his brother, football and basketball.
Survivors include his father, Rodney; two sisters, Robyn Rauk of St. Louis, Mo., and Rhonda (Shawn) Bender of Iowa City, Iowa; three brothers, Randall (Amy) of Nerstand, Marty and Benjamin, both of Kenyon; maternal grandmother, Rose Hillman of Scott City, Mo. His mother, Elaine, grandparents Raymond and Cornelia Rauk, and William Hillman, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kenyon. Burial was in rural Dennison, Minn.

Gerda Redalen, 84, once of Lanesboro
Gerda A. Redalen, 84, of Chatfield, died Friday, July 6, 2001, en route to Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Gerda Flaby was born Dec. 12, 1916, in rural Lanesboro. She graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1934. She married Tracy Redalen on June 27, 1943, in rural Lanesboro. He died on Dec. 15, 1997. After their marriage, the couple moved to the Root Prairie area east of Fountain. She moved to Chatfield in 1998. She was a homemaker. She played the church organ at Union Prairie Lutheran Church for eight years and was the organist for Root Prairie Lutheran Church for 47 years. She was a member of the Root Prairie Lutheran Church and the Farm Bureau. She also had been a parent leader of the Pilot Mound 4-H.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Allan) Carlson of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Susan (Steven) Amundson of Hastings; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.
The funeral was Tuesday in Root Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Fountain, with the Rev. Curtis Fox officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Louise Richards, 94, of Mabel
Louise Richards, 94, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at the St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis.
She was born Jan. 6, 1907, in Houston County, to Philip and Bertha (Neumann) Elsheimer. She attended school in Houston County. For many years she was the organist at the Crooked Creek Church. On June 26, 1928, she married William Richards in Eitzen and they farmed in the Crooked Creek area until 1965 when they moved to the Mabel area.
Her husband died on Dec. 29, 1971. She was a member of the Mabel United Methodist Church, the Mary Circle, and was the custodian of her church for 24 years, retiring at the age of 90. She was a hard worker and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed her. She enjoyed her large garden and shared it with others. She loved the piano and could often be heard playing and singing hymns.
She is survived by two sons, Dale (Fern) Richards of Brownsville, Minn., and Virgil (Sandra) Richards of Rapid City, S.D.; two daughters, Lois (John) Shelton of New Carrollton, Md. and Virginia (Donald) Pavek, Janesville, Wis.; 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a great-grandchild and two brothers.
Funeral services were Monday at the Mabel United Methodist Church in Mabel with the Reverend David Laechel officiating. Burial was in the Mabel Public Cemetery.

C. Roa, 90, husband of Harmony native
Clarence G. "Bing" Roa, died peacefully at his home on June 19, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
He was born on May 12, 1911, on a farm in Colfax, Wis. He went to California with a friend at the age of 16 and got a job working at the Alameda County Farm in San Leandro. He served in the armed forces during World War II. He was employed by Foremost Dairies, retiring from the Foremost McKesson Corporation in 1976 after 40 years of service.
He was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont.
His wife, Betty Roa, formerly of Harmony, survives him. The date of his death was their 53rd wedding anniversary.
He is also survived by daughter Debbi Roa, son-in-law Don Bolce, and grandson, Cody Bolce, all of Fremont, Calif.;, a brother, Clark Lee, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Doris Sampson of Fremont, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Louise Yeoman of Harmony; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ross and Helen Workman of Glenview, Ill.; many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
At his request, no services will be held.

Clifford Roesler, 86, of Harmony
Clifford Charles Roesler, 86, of Harmony, died Jan. 29, 2001, at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.
He was born July 11, 1914, in Howard County, Iowa, the son of Fred and Florence (Schempp) Roesler. On March 1, 1937, he was married to Arlene Cooper. He worked on farms in the area until he started farming his own farm in the LeRoy area. In 1957, they purchased a farm in the Harmony area where he spent his remaining years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Marvin (Janice) of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and Kevin (Teresa) of Harmony; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a sister, June Orum of LeRoy.
Funeral services were Thursday at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony with the Rev. John Hagen officiating. Burial was in the Greenfield Cemetery.
Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret F. Rowe, 75, of Wykoff
Margaret F. Rowe, 75, of Wykoff died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester after a courageous battle with cancer.
Margaret F. Freiheit was born Dec. 19, 1925, near Spring Valley, the daughter of Walter and Leona (Hintze) Freiheit. She graduated from Wykoff High School. On March 11, 1948, she was united in marriage to Kenneth R. Rowe on her family's farm in rural Spring Valley. She worked as a housewife.
She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, needlework and volunteer work throughout the community. She loved to visit her children and had spent Christmases and Easters with them these past few years.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Theodore (Judy) Rowe of Austin; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Tracy Anderson of Manitowoc, Wis.; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Mitchel Anderson, both of Manitowoc, Wis.; two sisters, Myrna (Mrs. Ernest) Rowe of Fountain and Dorothy Rowe of Crete, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died on June 14, 1989.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff with the Rev. Rodel Eberle officiating.

Clara Mary Ruroden, 91, of Mabel
Clara M. Ruroden, 91, of Mabel, formerly of Waukon, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel.
Clara Mary Gander was born Dec. 1, 1909, in Lansing, Iowa. Her parents were Joseph Frank and Katherine (Weipert) Gander. She grew up in the Lansing area and attended area schools. On Feb. 19, 1929, she married Loyed Ruroden in West Union, Iowa. They farmed in Allamakee and Winneshiek counties for many years. She was active in all aspects of the general farming operation. Following her husband’s death in 1964, she moved to Waukon, where she worked at the Coffee Shop Café and Towne Theatre. In 1984, she moved to Mabel, where she took part in activities at the Methodist Church and was a volunteer at Green Lea Manor.
She enjoyed quilting and embroidery as well as going out to eat, playing cards and spending time at the Senior Center in Mabel. She particularly like spending time with her family and was known by her grandchildren as "Grandma Rooster."
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Westby of Mabel, Shirley (Warren) Wise of Hiawatha, Iowa, and Betty (Joe) Angelone of Los Gatos, Calif.; a son-in-law, Roger Solem of Cedar Rapids; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Doris and husband, Maynard Monson, and Lorene Solem; an infant son, Clifton; a great-granddaughter; a son-in-law; a sister, Loretta VanBrocklin; and five brothers, Frank, Herbert, Herman, Arnold and Leonard Gander.
Funeral services were held Friday at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with the Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating with burial in the Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.
Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Marie Ryan, 84, of Harmony
Marie Ryan, 84, of Harmony, a former farm homemaker, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Regional Health Services of Howard County, Iowa.
Born Marie Pederson on May 6, 1917, in Winneshiek County, she married Donald W. Ryan in Canton on March 4, 1946. They farmed near Harmony until their retirements. Her husband died in 1978.
Survivors include two sons, John D. (Jacque) of Harmony, and David (Barb) of Stewartville; two daughters, Joan (John) Broadwater of Winona and Carol (John) Lewis of Cresco; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Seven brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
The funeral was Wednesday, June 6, at Nativity Catholic Church, Harmony, with the Rev. Steve Peterson officiating. Burial was in State Line Cemetery, rural Harmony.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony was in charge of arrangements.
