Jessie W. Jordan
Jessie W. Jordan, age 82, of Darlington, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in a local hospital. Mr. Jordan has resided in Walton County since 1979 and was a former resident of Lakeland, Fla. He was Holiness by faith. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha Jordan, of Darlington; one son, James and wife, Carole Jordan, of Mary Esther, Fla.; two daughters, Shirley and husband, J.C. Adkinson, of Darlington, Fla., and Bonnie and husband, Richard Winborn, of Geneva, Ala.; stepson, James E. and wife, Mary Dupree, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at Outreach For Christ Church with the Rev. Curtis Manning officiating. Burial will follow at Limestone Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at Comander Chapel, 21 West Main Street, DeFuniak Springs, Fla.
Pall bearers will be: Ricky and Michael Winborn, Richard Jordan, Cory and Josh Webster and George Adkinson.
Comander Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

George E. Belote III
George E. Belote III, age 50, of Niceville, Fla., and formerly of Memphis, Tenn., died of cancer Dec. 29, 1998, in Los Angeles.
A funeral service is scheduled 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Memphis, Tenn. His burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Mr. Belote graduated from St. Louis Elementary School, Christian Brothers High School and Christian Brothers University. Upon graduating from C.B.U. with a degree in mechanical engineering, Mr. Belote was recruited by Martin-Merrieta to work in their guided weapons division. Mr. Belote continued his work in the field and most recently was a senior systems analyst for Tracor Technical Services Inc. at Eglin Air Force Base.
Surviors include: sisters, Ann Jeanette Simonson, of New Orleans, Margaret A. Freiberg, of Los Angeles, and Beverly Marie Belote, of Oxnard, Calif.; and brothers, Michael H. Belote, of Collierville, Tenn., and Christopher J. Belote, of Biloxi, Miss.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the John Wayne Cancer Institute, 2200 Santa Monica Blvd., of Santa Monica, Calif., 90404.

Allan Pollard Van Bergen
Allan Pollard Van Bergen, age 73, of Shalimar, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.
He was born on July 16, 1925, in Anacortes, Wash., to Mabel and Edward Pollard. Following their deaths, he was adopted by Newell and Edith Van Bergen of Carbondale, Pa.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jean Van Bergen of Shalimar; son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Van Bergen; grandson, James B. Van Bergen; and granddaughter, Erin S. Van Bergen, all of Houston.
After service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Allan chose the architectural field as his profession. During his career as an architectural technician, Allan worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita, Kan., and private firms in Pensacola, Fla., and Fort Walton Beach. His professional work also included six years with the Board of Regents Architectural Office of the State of Florida in Tallahassee, Fla.
He served his Lord as a charter member of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Gulf Breeze, Fla., a church which he helped design and build, serving in the capacity of Junior Warden. He served his community as a founder and active member of the Gulf Breeze Volunteer Fire Department, and later as Deputy Chief of the Midway Volunteer Fire Department and as president of the board of directors.
Allan devoted his retirement years to service as a master gardener in Okaloosa County, Fla., and his longtime interests in meteorology and his love of sailing.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Allan will be held at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at St. Jude's Episcopal Church in Niceville. Following the service, friends are invited to a reception at the family home in Shalimar. Private interment services will be held at a later date.
For those wishing to honor Allan's life, the family requests donations be made in his name to the memorial fund of St. Jude's Episcopal Church, 200 North Partin Drive, Niceville, FL 32578

Harry Hinely
Harry Hinely, age 95, of Niceville, Fla., went to the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, from the Manor at Bluewater Bay.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Almyra Elizabeth Hinely. He is survived by his son, Raymond F. Hinely and wife Bernice; grandsons, Scott Hinely and wife Sherrie, Randall Hinely and Brett Hinely and wife Colleen, all of Niceville; granddaughter, Sharon Saad and husband Stewart of Tampa, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Blake Hinely, Patreece Tusai of Niceville; brother, Milas DeVane of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and sister, Wilma Eubanks of Miami.
Mr. Hinely was a resident of Niceville for the past 20 years. Prior to that he resided in Miami for 65 years, where he was self-employed and then was an architectural associate with several different firms. He was a member of the Pinelake Church of Christ.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Sunset Cemetery in Valparaiso, Fla., with Terry Hanna and Scott McGown officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pinelake Church of Christ Mission Trust Fund or to Georgia Christian School, 4350 Dasher Road, Valdosta, GA 31601.

Karin L. Mayfield
Karin McPeek Mayfield, 338 Olde Post Road, Niceville, Fla., passed away peacefully of natural causes at her home on Jan. 2, 1999.
Karin was a member of First United Methodist Church of Niceville. She was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., on June 27, 1942, and moved to this area in 1986. Karin was married to Vincent P. "Vince" Mayfield on Dec. 24, 1997.
She was preceded in death by her son, Edward M. Cooper IV; mother, Martha Thonen McPeek; and father, Dale L. McPeek. She is survived by her spouse, Vince, and has two children living in the local area: daughter, Emily Anne Cooper who resides in Niceville, and a son, Andrew Dale Cooper, who lives in Valparaiso, Fla.; another daughter, Karin (Ellen) Cooper Rhodes, resides in Spring Lake, N.C., with her spouse, Kurt A. Rhodes, and their sons, David and Erik. A sister, Sandra K. McPeek of Charlotte, N.C., also survives Mrs. Mayfield; along with three other stepchildren; and three stepchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Little Chapel Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at First United Methodist Church in Niceville with the Rev. Edward Chandler officiating.
Floral tributes are acceptable, or for those who desire, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Alabama Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center, 619 S. 19th St., Birmingham, AL 35233, in memory of Karin L. Mayfield.

Charles Edward Powell Jr.
Col. Charles "Ed" E. Powell Jr., age 79, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, in Atlanta.
Ed was born in Phillip, Miss., on June 24, 1919, and had resided in Fort Walton Beach since 1967.
Col. Powell enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December 1939 and entered into pilot training in 1940. He earned his pilot's wings and second lieutenant commission in February 1941 (Flying Cadet Class 41A). Col. Powell served 28 years in military service through World War II, Korea and the Vietnam conflict. He was stationed many places in the continental U.S. and also in Tripoli, Libya; Munich, Germany; Evreux, France; and Thule, Greenland. Col. Powell was a senior command pilot.
Since retirement, Col. Powell has been a willing volunteer worker. He assisted the Northwest Florida Visionnaires when they were constructing their present home. He was an active member of the Florida Woodworkers Association for years. He was also a member of the Northwest Florida Retired Officers Association, Air Force Association, and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He especially enjoyed his volunteer work for Shalimar United Methodist Church, where he had been a member since 1969. He had served many years as a member and chairman of the Board of Trustees and numerous other committees of the church. He served three years as Chairman of the Administrative Board of Stewards. He was a member and past president of the Friendship Club and the Crandall Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Methodist Men's Club and the Emmaus Community. He had completed training as a Stephen Minister and had worked with that group for four years.
Col. Powell was an excellent amateur woodworker and took pride in the furniture he built for his home and for his children and grandchildren. In recent years, at the encouragement of his daughter, he had taken up tole painting. He enjoyed writing poetry.
Col. Powell married Lillian Clair Ross in 1941. They would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on Feb. 4 of this year.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian Ross Powell of Fort Walton Beach. He also leaves two sons, a daughter and three grandchildren. His sons are Robert E. Powell of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Charles R. Powell, with wife Jeanie Powell and daughter Tracie A. Powell of Woodbridge, Va.; his daughter is Linda P. Potter, with husband Lt. Col. (USMC retired) Michael B. Potter, their son Matthew G. Potter and their daughter Klare M. Potter of Spotsylvania, Va.
Visitation will be at the Emerald Coast Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Shalimar United Methodist Church in Shalimar, Fla., with the Rev. David Chunn, the Rev. John Collins and the Rev. Jerry Hollis officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Barrancas Cemetery at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Hendrix, Ray Rudolph, Andy Bilbo, Jack Culwell, Tom Goodwin, "Van" Vanblaricum, Hank Zinke and Fred Doyle. The Tuesday Morning Emmaus Men's Group and men of Crandall Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Shalimar United Methodist Church Building Fund; Shalimar United Methodist Church Agape Fund; American Cancer Society; or the American Heart Association.

Harry Hinely
Harry Hinely, age 95, of Niceville, Fla., went to the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, from the Manor at Bluewater Bay.

Richard D. Pieringer
Richard D. Pieringer, age 66, of Destin, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Pieringer moved to this area in 1975 from Oklahoma City, Okla., and was a member of St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Destin; the Elks Lodge; and VFW. He proudly served his country as a senior master sergeant with 27 years of service in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his three sons, Paul, Richard and Scott Pieringer, all of Fort Worth, Texas; and granddaughter, Angela.
Mr. Pieringer requested that his remains be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 14 N.W. Beal Pkwy., Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548.

Edith Burlison
Edith Bullard Butler Burlison, age 94, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, in a Panama City Beach, Fla., hospital.
Mrs. Burlison was born and lived most of her life in Point Washington, Fla. She was the daughter of the late W.W. (Bud) Bullard and Mozelle Rodgers Bullard. She was Methodist by faith and a member of Point Washington Methodist Church. Mrs. Burlison was a former employee of Howell and Conner Real Estate and Insurance for over 30 years in Panama City.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Burt Butler, and her second husband, Roy Burlison.
She is survived by two sons, Albert and wife Ollie Sue Saltman Butler of Point Washington, Fla., and Dr. Jack Kaye Burlison of New York City; brother, Wallace and wife Myrtle Ammons Bullard of Panama City; grandchildren, Teressa Deal and husband Jimmy of Blue Mountain Beach, Gary Brett of Perry, Fla., Bryan Brett of Ohio, Gid Godwin of Point Washington, and Gyle Parker of New Orleans; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at Point Washington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Houseman officiating. Burial will follow in Point Washington Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Thursday at Point Washington United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall from noon to 1 p.m.
Asked to serve as pallbearers are Vann Butler III, Wilburn Bullard, Gid Godwin, Malcom Patterson, Otis Barrett and Gary Brett.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Point Washington United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Glenn Tellis
Glenn Tellis was born on Dec. 1, 1949, in Birmingham, Ala. He moved to Fort Walton Beach, Fla., on Nov. 23, 1963, and lived here until he departed this life on Jan. 1, 1999.
Mr. Tellis was a graduate of the University of West Florida. He spent most of his life serving others while working as a special education teacher and health care spe#####t for Horizons of Okaloosa County.
Mr. Tellis was preceded in death by his mother and significant other, Albert L. Porter. He will be greatly missed by his father, Mr. Leo (June) Edwards of Chicago; two sisters, Elaine (Eddie) Parker of Navarre, Fla., and Joanne Hicks of Fort Walton Beach; brothers, Gregory (Jackki) Tellis of Montgomery, Ala., and John A. Tellis of Fort Walton Beach; and one aunt, Mrs. Hazel Duncan of Birmingham. Mr. Tellis is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, Angela Bennet, Tiffany (Will) Rhodes, Latoya Scott, Marki Tellis, Carlos Bogan, Jamaal Parker and Gregory Tellis II; five great-nieces; and a host of cousins, family and friends, especially Nathaniel, Bobby, Bear and Wendy. He is especially missed by his girls (kitties), Feisty, Ghost and Al E. Cat.
A wake will be held on Friday, Jan. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Little Chapel Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Beal Memorial Cemetery.
