Don Larson
Donald Lee Larson 69, died on October 15, 1999 in Prescott, Arizona.
He was born on September 24, 1930 in Millbank, South Dakota.
Mr. Larson served his country with the U.S. Army in the Korean War earning the "Purple Heart."
He loved camping and fishing.
He was also a member of the American Legion Post #40 in Chino Valley, Arizona.
Mr. Larson is survived by his wife Janette of Chino Valley, daughters; LaDonna of Iowa, and Cheryl of California, sons; Kevin of Sioux Falls, SD, and Brian of Omaha, Neb., brother Benjamin Larson of South Dak., and half brother Myron Maddox of South Dak., stepsons, Ken, Eddie, and Larry Peter, also seven grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on October 19 at Chino Valley Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Fred LeClaire, C.M.F. officiating.
Vern Hansen
Vern C. Hanson 79, died Saturday August 14, 1999 in Prescott, Arizona. He was born March 30, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Charles and Fredrica (Meyer) Hanson.
Mr. Hanson was a decorated Army W.W.II Veteran who landed on Omaha Beach, fought across France and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He was medically discharged in 1945. Originally from Minneapolis, Minn. he spent 25 years in Escondido, Ca. and the last eleven in Chino Valley, Az.
Mr. Hanson is survived by his wife of 57 years Cecelia, daughters; Patricia Korba of Lake Ville, Minn., and Paula Dyke of Manorville, NY., sons; Tom of Escondido, Ca., J.R. of Chino Valley, Az. and Rich of Fallbrook, Ca., brothers; Ken of Las Osos, Ca. and Merlin of Clear Lake, Ca., sister Darlene Nilan of Fair Oaks, Ca., eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass was celebrated on Sunday, August 15, at the V.A. Medical Center Chapel in Prescott, with Rev. Fr. Gerald Caffrey, C.M.F. officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Hospice Center, V.A. Hospital, Prescott, Az. 86313
Lincoln Hathaway
Lincoln L. Hathaway, 79, died on August 3, 1999 in Prescott, Arizona. He was born on March 2, 1920 in Nogales, Arizona to William Harrison and Mary Lucille (McIntyre) Hathaway.
Mr. Hathaway was a second generation member of a pioneer ranching family in southern Arizona where he and his wife owned and operated a cattle ranch for 15 years. During World War II he served with the submarine forces of the US Navy aboard the USS Jack and was honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. Hathaway graduated with honors from the University of Arizona College of Engineering as a civil engineer and was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Theta Tau. He was a professional engineer registered with the California State Board of Registration, and a member of the American Society of Civil engineers. His career as a civil engineer include the Department of Water Resources in California, Base Engineer at Yuma Proving Ground and Fort Huachuca, and district engineer for Castle & Cooke in Costa Rica.
Mr. Hathaway was a pilot and enjoyed flying throughout the west, Mexico, and Central America. Mr. and Mrs. Hathaway have lived in Chino Valley since 1978. He was involved in the community and served on the Chino Valley Town council, was appointed Public Works director for Chino Valley, and was an active member of the Ground Water User Advisory Council, Prescott Active Management Area.
Mr. Hathaway was well respected by many and will be missed and remembered with honor and love by those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Virginia of Chino Valley, sons; Glenn of Phoenix, Joel, Kent, Washington, William, of Bisbee, Arizona. Daugher; Anne Bain of Seattle, Washington, brothers; James, Robert, and Paul all of Nogales, Arizona, and fourteen grandchildren.
Cremation was private at Bradshaw Crematory, Prescott Valley. Memorial services will be on Saturday August 21, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 630 Park Ave, Prescott.
Memorial Donations may be made to a favorite charity of choice.
Family was assisted by Arizona Wakelin Bradshaw Chapel.
Bill Thompson
William "Bill" Thompson 51, died on August 7, 1999 at his home in Chino Valley . He was born November 9, 1947 in Los Angeles, California to William Nathaniel Thompson and Elma Mae (Ingram) Barrington. William met and married Leah Jean Farley on April 6, 1979 and shared twenty loving years together. William moved to Chino Valley from Janesville, California in January of 1994. He worked for Paulden Sand and Rock for five years as a cement mixer driver. William was a member of the Chino Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed working on cars and building models. William also enjoyed playing golf and photography, but for William, taking family vacations each year was a way for him to escape everyday life. He liked to watch automobile racing. William was proud of his children and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
He is survived by his wife Leah Thompson of Chino Valley, daughters Linda R. Thompson of Chino Valley and Christine Akers of Pasadena, Cal.; sons, William N. Thompson III of Chino Valley, Tony Ojeda of Norwalk, Cal.; mother Elma Mae Barrington of Prescott, Az.; sister Sharon Daugherty of Palmdale,Cal.; brother; Lee Harrington of Cal. and three grandchildren.
Funeral service were held on Friday August 13, 1999 at Chino Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Chris Sexton officiating. Concluding services took place at Chino Valley Cemetery. Memorial contributions are to be made to Hospice Family care, 100 E. Sheldon Street, Prescott, Az. 86301.
Marie Crowder
Marie T. Crowder, 88, of Chino Valley died August 5, 1999. Marie was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on May 15, 1911.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Eric, a sister Lucile Carey and brother Guy Tillman. Survived by her daughters, Elaine (Stan ) Mooneyham, Sylvia (Bert) Jernigan of Chino Valley, Mary Lavis of Tucson, and Peggy (Guy) Frazer of El Paso, Texas.
She is also survived by a niece, Gail Carey of Chino Valley and many other nieces an nephews, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Marie moved to Flagstaff, Arizona in 1918 and to Yuma in 1928. She graduated from Yuma Union High School in 1930 and married Eric, a beekeeper, in 1935. They raised four girls and were very active in the First Baptist church, where she taught Sunday School for 34 years.
Marie was a Manager for the Yuma School Food Services and relocated to Chino Valley after retiring. Marie was a charter member of the Grace Baptist church in Chino Valley, where she taught Sunday school for ten years.
She was very devoted to her family and friends and was a member of the Chino Valley Friday Ladies, a group of widows who support each other.
To know Marie was to love her and she will be greatly missed by family and friends. A celebration of Marie's life was held at Grace Baptist Church on August 9, 1999, and graveside services were held at Mountain View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of Grace Baptist Church of Chino Valley .
Bob Edwards
Robert L. Edwards, 78, of Ramona, California (formerly a Chino Valley resident) died July 28, 1999 at home. He moved to Ramona from Arizona in January to be near his family after becoming ill.
Robert was born February 22, 1921 in Paris, Arkansas and had worked for the Civilian conservation Corps (C.C.C.) in the late 1930's. He married Lola E. Garner on August 17, 1943 in San Diego. Mr. Edwards was a heavy equipment operator for the Daley Corporation for over 30 years, retiring in 1981, and moving to Arizona. He was a member of the Moose Loge both in El Cajon and then in Prescott. He loved animals and enjoyed camping and fishing.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 yers, Lola Edward of Ramona; sons; William, Ernest and Rodger, all of Ramona, sisters; Travis Moore and Bernice Ferguson, both of Oxnard, Imogene Perry of La Mesa and Ilatrene Campbell of Little Rock, Ark; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Committal services and burial took place at the Potrero Cemetery in Potrero.
Jo Butler
Luda"Jo" Mae Sachak Butler, 70, died Wednesday May 7, 1999 at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott, Arizona. She was born on May 12, 1928 in Healdton, Ok. to Ernest and Ida (Southerland ) Knight. Jo has been a resident of Chino Valley for the past 17 years,when she moved from Parker, Arizona. She was a member of the Doe in the Elk's Ladies Auxillary. She was also a member of the Baptist church, and very active in 4-H for many years. Jo also enjoyed quilting and arts and crafts.
She is survived by her husband George, her mother Ida Bowman of Phx, daughters Linda Gordon of Casa Grande, AZ, Janie Escalante of Prescott, son Steve Sachak of Parker, AZ, sisters, Faye Stuebs of Chino Valley, Tina Adams of Phoenix, five grand-children,and five great grand children.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday May 11,1999 with Rev. Leigh Metcalf officiant. Hampton Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
Muriel McGuire
E. Muriel McGuire, 89, died at Mountain View Manor in Prescott, Arizona, on May 26, 1999. She was born on December 29, 1909 in Joliet, Illinois to Theodore C. and Mary Agnes (McNerney) Reuter. Muriel married the love of her life, Edwin J. McGuire in 1933. Edwin preceded her in death in 1959 after 26 years of marriage. She worked as a dance instructor for 25 years in her own studio, The Muriel McGuire Studio and retired in the early seventies. Muriel moved to Prescott from Joliet, Illinois in May of 1998. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Joliet, Illinois and also the Daughter of Isabella.
Muriel will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter Marylyn McGuire of Chino Valley, Arizona and son Richard L. McGuire of Faribault, Montana, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was on Saturday May 29, 1999 at St. Catherine LaBoure Catholic Church. Family was assisted by Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home.
Jake 'Dub' Mann
Jake "Dub" Mann, 70, died Monday May 25, 1999, Vencor Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona.
He was born on September 30, 1928 in Lathrop, Missouri to Levi and Edith (Curl) Mann.
"Dub" spent his entire professional life as a nurseryman. He was a salesman for Willow Creek Greenhouses in Chino Valley, his favorite job of all time, at the time of his death. Needless to stay he had a green thumb and loved to garden. He had some of the same customers for 40 years throughout the state. He was a member of the Chino Valley United Methodist Church and of the Emmaus community Walk #43. He was also a member of A.F. & A.M. Lodge #252 Polo, Missouri. "Dub" was a dedicated family man and a strong support of his church and church family. He enjoyed fishing, especially for bas and catfish at Roosevelt Lake and being outside in God's world. He never met a person he didn't like, nor ever spoke a harsh word towards anyone.
He is survived by his wife Daisy, they were married in April 18, 1947, son, Jerry Mann of Mesa, Arizona, daughter Shirley Lambert of Phoenix, Ariz., brother, Max Mann of Liberty, Missouri, sisters, Kathy Brady of Tulsa, OK., Pauline Robison of Polo, Missouri, and two grandchildren.
A celebration service of "Dub" Mann's life was on May 28,1998, at Chino Valley United Methodist Church. Concluding services were at Chino Valley Cemetery Road 2 South.
