Louise Baisden
LEBANON, Va. - Louise Carnes Baisden, 84, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) in Maple Grove Health Care Center.
Born in Lynn, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late William Tate and Rebecca Cochran Carnes. She was a retired school teacher having taught in Mingo and Mercer County, W.Va. She received her BS degree from Concord College and a MS degree from Marshall University where she completed advanced graduate work.
She was a lifelong member and Sunday school teacher in the United Methodist church and attended the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church in Lebanon.
Surviving are one daughter, Beverly Horton and her husband, Frank, Lebanon, Va.; one son, James Baisden, Cape Canaveral, Fla.; two grandsons, Franklin Horton and his wife, Jane Ellen and Todd Horton, all of Lebanon, Va.; and one sister, Oretha Metcalf, Filbert, W.Va.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Combs Funeral Service in Lebanon, Va.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Family Cemetery in Breeden, W.Va. with the Rev. Jerry Messer officiating.

Bob Wilson Berry
Services for Bob Berry, 65, of Blackwater, Va., who entered into rest Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of Gate City Funeral Home with Evangelist Kenneth Neeley and Basil Manness officiating.
Music will be by the Lee Smith Singers.
Burial will follow in the Berry Family Cemetery, Blackwater, Va.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Robert Bowlin
KINGSPORT - Robert Harding 'Bob' Bowlin, 79, died at 10:20 p.m. Sunday night (Dec. 3, 2000) unexpectedly at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center emergency room.
Born in Pierce, Neb., he came to Kingsport in 1941. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 and Charles Dewitt Byrd VFW Post No. 3382.
Mr. Bowlin was retired from Eastman after over 47 years of service.
He was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church, where he had served as a teller for years.
He was a member and past master of Kingsport Masonic Lodge No. 688; member and past high priest of the Lynn Bachman Chapter No. 195; member and past illustrious master of Kingsport Council No. 117; and a member of Kingsport Commandry No. 33 and the York Rite College.
He was also a member and past worthy patron of Liberty Chapter No. 198 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Royal Order of Scotland and the Upper East Tennessee York Rite Association.
He was an honorary 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason of the Knoxville Consistory.
He was a member of Jericho Shrine Temple, the Kingsport Scottish Rite and Shrine Clubs. He was a very dedicated member and was very active in visiting and reporting on our sick brethren.
Mr. Bowlin was preceded in death by his parents, Robert M. Bowlin and Pearl Thomason Bowlin; and an infant sister.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Norma (Shortt) Bowlin, of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Mildred) Slagle, Elkton, Md., and Mrs. Charles (Trixie) Stringer, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and also several cousins.
Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown, or anytime at the residence of the sister and brother-in-law, Charles and Trixie Stringer, 1925 E. Sevier Ave., Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Richard Harris and the Rev. Dr. Ed Dillow officiating, followed by Kingsport Masonic Lodge No. 688.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery with American Legion Hammond Post No. 3, Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post No. 3382 and Joe W. Byrd, chaplain, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Glenwood Baptist Church, 2601 E. Center St., Kingsport, Tenn. 37664.
Pallbearers will be members of Kingsport Masonic Lodge No. 688.

Pearlie Burden
PENNINGTON GAP, Va. - Pearlie Byington Burden, 86, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Lee County Community Hospital, Pennington Gap, Va.
Born in Bell County, Ky., she had been a resident of Lee County, Va. most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of the Belchers Chapel Church in Poor Valley.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Junior Shelton, Dillard and Willard; one daughter, Christine Galloway.
Surviving are a son, Tommy Byington, Poor Valley, Va.; daughter, Lavernia McGeorge, Pennington Gap, Va.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; several stepdaughters and stepsons; several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Province Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary with the Rev. Paul Davis Jr. and the Rev. Tim Cradic officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go to the cemetery.

Sandy Ann Burton
ROGERSVILLE - Sandy Ann Burton, 37, went to be with the Lord Friday (Dec. 1, 2000) at her residence.
She was a member of Chuza Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mindy Mesarch; and son, Jamey Burton, both of Rogersville; parents, Dewey and Phyllis Burton, Rogersville; two brothers, Toney Burton and Ricky Burton, both of Rogersville; one sister, Amy Burton, Rogersville; grandmother, Ruth Smith, Rogersville; and several aunts and uncles.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.
Services will follow at 8 p.m. today with the Rev. Glen Bradley and the Rev. Jerry Bradley officiating.

Eva Jo Carter
GATE CITY, Va. - Eva Jo McDavid Carter, 64, departed this life Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at the home of a sister, Barbara McDavid, New Summerville Rd., Kingsport, Tenn.
The family will receive friends at the residence in Dishner Trailer Court (Daniel Boone Community), Gate City, Va.
Survivors and arrangements will be announced later by Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City.

Wallace L. Clark
KINGSPORT - Wallace Lawrence Clark, 68, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Ahoskie, N.C., he was a member of the West 8th Street Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Willie Hill Clark and Dana Mae Simmons Clark.
Surviving are his wife, Flo L. Clark, Kingsport; one son, Tim Clark, Kingsport; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Crystal) McDaniels, Hudson, Fla., Mrs. Jay (Sharon) Winstead, Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Mrs. Joel (Karen) Shelton, Kingsport; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; four sisters, Mrs. Calvin (Sylvia) Barnes, Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Ellen Barnes and Mrs. Jimmy (Doris) Keel, both of North Carolina and Mildred Weaver, Virginia; three brothers, John Clark, Alton Clark, both of North Carolina and Fred Clark, Florida.
A memorial service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Forest Christian Church with Dr. Ed Clevinger officiating.

Alma Lee Covert
KINGSPORT - Services for Alma Lee Johnson Covert, 94, of 2900 Cliffside Road, who was called home at 4:45 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport with the Rev. Gary L. R. Bullard officiating.
Calling hours will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the church.
Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, Kingsport, Tenn., or to Zion Presbyterian Church, Greeneville, Tenn.

Clarice Davies
EL CAJON, Calif. - Clarice Wagner Davies, 76, passed away Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000).
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Davies; parents, Oscar and Eva Wagner; two brothers, Garland and Bartley Wagner.
Surviving are one daughter, Linda Davies, El Cajon, Calif.; one sister, Geneva France, Kingsport; one brother, Earl Wagner, Lawton, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Greenwood Mortuary, San Diego, Calif., is in charge of the arrangements.

George H. Goins
KINGSPORT - George H. Goins, 68, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at his residence after a short battle with cancer.
A lifelong resident of Kingsport, he was employed with J.P. Stevens Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1987.
Mr. Goins was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mike Goins; parents, George and Grace Goins; and a brother, Paul Goins.
Surviving are his wife, Dot Goins, Kingsport; three sisters, Lois Berry, Ruby Jones, both of Kingsport, and Carolyn Chafin, Gray; two brothers, Donald Ray Goins, Church Hill, and Ira J. Goins, Mountain City; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Morelock officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Samuel C. Harris Jr.
ROGERSVILLE - Samuel Carson Harris Jr., was the first son of Samuel C. and Maude Bates Harris. He was born on April 12, 1929.
Sam Jr. was a normal, healthy, young child until he suffered a fractured skull from a fall around four years of age. Due to several operations, he was paralyzed and suffered many seizures. He was finally cured and started school, Rogersville City School, around the age of seven.
At the age of 15-16 years, he did some work at the tobacco warehouse and the tannery.
He joined the Tennessee National Guard at age 16 and enjoyed this a lot. At the age of 18, he joined the regular U.S. Army and received basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. From Ft. Jackson, he was sent to the engineering company at Ft. Belvoir, Va. After a year, he was sent to Guam on an overseas tour.
As the two year tour of duty passed, his company was due to rotate back to the states. The Korean War had started and Sam Jr. and his company were sent to Japan and immediately on to fighting in North Korea.
He was reported Missing in Action on Nov. 25, 1950. We have never found out anything about his circumstances. We do not know if he was killed, or wounded and taken prisoner.
All of the Korean War MIA/POW's were declared dead in December of 1953.
He is survived by three sisters, Doris H. Feathers, Piney Flats, Ruth Harris, Marietta, Ga., and Barbara Anne Harris, Austin, Tex.; two brothers, Glen Harris Jr., Fredericksburg, Va., and Joe P. Harris, Bristol, Tenn.
Hawkins County Color Guard will conduct Military Honors at 2 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 7, 2000) at Highland Cemetery in Rogersville.
Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie B. Hayes
KINGSPORT - Nellie B. Hayes, 86, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Sunbridge - Hillside Manor after an extended illness.
She was born in Sandy Ridge, Dickenson County, Va., and had lived in the Kingsport area for most of her life.
She was preceded in death by a son, Henry Hayes; husband, Joseph Hayes; several brothers and sisters; parents, James Orville LaForce and Frances Elizabeth Kiser LaForce.
Surviving are her son and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Lois Hayes, Kingsport, Beulah Hayes, Tazwell, Va.; grandchildren, Yuvonne Hayes, Terri Hess; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Justin Hess; nieces, Mrs. Lee (Ruby) Byington, Kingsport, and Mrs. Jerry (Jane) Thornhill, Rosadale, Va.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Dorothy C. Hicks
KINGSPORT - Dorothy 'Dot' Carson Hicks, of 1241 Eastbrook Drive, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a courageous battle against a lengthy illness.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. A member of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church for 43 years, she loved working with children and also taught a women's Sunday School class for many years. Mrs. Hicks helped start the mission organization for children in the Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
She formerly taught school in North Carolina for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jesse Carson; mother, Irene Carson; son, Ronald Jesse Hicks; and sister, Eleanor Craven.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, the Rev. Ronald D. Hicks, Kingsport; two daughters, Ellen Hicks Gray and husband, David Gray, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Annette Hicks Overbay and husband, David Overbay, of Kingsport; two sons, Ronald D. Hicks Jr. and wife, Joyce Overbey Hicks, of Louisville, Ky., and Forrest C. Hicks and wife, Rebecca Bragg Hicks, of Kingsport; eight much beloved grandchildren, Suzannah Hicks Stephens and her husband, Brian, of Raleigh, N.C., Ronald D. Hicks III and Meredith Hicks, both of Louisville, Ky., Heather and Jesse Overbay, of Kingsport, Jerica Hicks Smith and husband, Matthew, of Gray, and Jacob and Jordan Hicks, both of Kingsport; and one brother, Jesse Carson Jr., of Davidson, N.C.
Friends may call anytime at the home of a daughter, Annette Hicks Overbay, 2324 Colonial View Road.
Friends will be received from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Roland P. Brown, Pastor David Salley and her husband, Pastor Ronald D. Hicks officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Jimmy Johnson
KINGSPORT - Jimmy Johnson, 44, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) after a brief illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport.
He had worked at various odd jobs in the Kingsport area and attended local churches.
He was a Golden-Gloves Featherweight Champion in 1974-75.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Della Blanton Johnson; and maternal grandmother, Suzie Blanton.
Surviving are his father and step-mother, Kenneth and Elizabeth Ellen Johnson, Kingsport; one sister and brother-in-law, Debbie Morrison and husband, Steve; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth G. Johnson Jr. and wife, Tammy; five nieces; one nephew; and two uncles.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel.
Burial will be in the Sullivan County Cemetery, Blountville, Tenn.

Mae R. Johnson
KINGSPORT - Mae Roberts Johnson, 91, of 249 Lakeview Circle, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at her home after an extended illness.
She was a daughter of the late Thomas Roberts and Elizabeth Jarrett Roberts. She was born in North Carolina and had lived in the Kingsport area since the 1950's. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard W. Johnson; and a son, Tommy R. Johnson.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Peggy Johnson and Dr. Stacy A. Duncan, of Dunn, N.C.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Ed Roberts, Kingsport.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Docha Jones
PENNINGTON GAP, Va. - Docha Jones, 85, died Sunday (Dec. 2, 2000) at Lee County Community Hospital, Pennington Gap.
She was born in Millers Chapel (Lee County, Va.) and had been a resident there most of her life.
She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Asher and Cornelus Garrett; first husband, Creed Kirk; second husband, John L. Jones; special friend and long time companion, Dayton Pope; two daughters; three sons; two sisters; and five brothers.
Surviving are five sons and daughters-in-law, Vincient Kirk and wife, Betty, Dryden, Va., Millard Jones and wife, Marsha, South Lebanon, Ohio, Walter Jones and wife, Betty, Barbourville, Ky., Herbert Jones and wife, Terry, Pennington Gap, Va., and Joe Jones, Las Vegas, Nev.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene Smith and husband, Curtis, Pennington Gap, Va., Mary Johnson and husband, Garney, Harlan, Ky., and Patricia Neely and husband, Harold Sr., Harlan, Ky.; 30 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Dale Garrett, Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Irene Weinel, Fort Worth, Ky.; and numerous stepchildren.

Mrs. Kenneth Kiesau
KINGSPORT - Mrs. Kenneth R. Kiesau, 84, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Indian Path Medical Center.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Kyle F. and Ann Kiesau, Spartanburg, S.C.; grandchildren, Christian A. Kiesau, Latta, S.C., and Mrs. Jennifer Kiesau Roberts, Durham, N.C.; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Alvis, Richmond, Va.

Gladys Laws
JOHNSON CITY - Gladys Leonard Laws, 89, of 103 Buffalo Valley Church Road, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Carter County and had lived most of her life there. She was the daughter of the late J. Fred and Lillie Cox Leonard.
Mrs. Laws had worked in the First Aid Dept. for Bemberg Co. and later as a Private Duty Nurse at Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
She was a member and past president of the Watauga Valley Art League.
Mrs. Laws was a charter member of Buffalo Valley Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Laws, in 1994; three sisters; and five brothers.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Brackett, Johnson City; two sons, Martin Laws, Limestone, and Philip Laws, Unicoi; one sister, Marie Leonard Lenden, Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Lisa Bennett, Pamela Holben, Karen Brackett, and Kenneth Brackett, all of Johnson City; three great-grandchildren, Chenoa Bennett, Rachael Bennett, and Henry Holben, all of Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.

Virgie Mooney
COEBURN, Va. - Virgie Lee Mooney, 73, passed away Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) in the St. Mary's Hospital in Norton, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond (Tarzan) Mooney, April 11, 1999.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are four sisters, Mildred Combs, Edna Mae Thomas, Janice Lee, all of Lebanon, Va., and Roberta Young, Burnsville, N.C.; two brothers, Eugene Lee, Brooklyn, N.Y. and Ector Lee Jr., Dante, Va.; a special sister-in-law, Hortense Teresa Mooney, Coeburn, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

ROGERSVILLE - Bessie Mowl, 95, passed away Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at Ridgeview Terrace.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen C. Mowl; son, G.C. Mowl; and parents, H.B. and Martha Everhart Gibson.
She is survived by her daughter, Paulina Mowl, Rutledge; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one nephew; and special friend, Scott Lee, of Rogersville.

Letcher Taylor
WISE, Va. - Letcher Taylor, 53, passed away Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at the St. Mary's Hospital in Norton, Va.
He was a former employee of Poboy Construction and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fitzhugh and Nellie Smith Taylor; two brothers, Walter and Noy Taylor; two sisters, Francis Taylor and Della Newsome.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Hall Taylor; two daughters, Cynthia Bentley and Tina Mullins, both of Wise; one son, Anthony Wayne Hall, of the home; a brother, Coy Taylor, Pound, Va.; five sisters, Dossie Stidham, Ramona Bloomer, both of Pound, Margie Howe, Charlotte, N.C., Marcel Dingus, Woodbridge, Va., and Gaynell Lane, Big Stone Gap, Va.; and three grandchildren, Letcher Wayne Taylor, Latasia Brooke Vanover and Casey McKenna Mullins.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Wise, Va., with the Rev. Virgil Mullins officiating.
Burial will follow in the Dotson Cemetery, Pound, Va.

Graveside services for Donnie (Don) R. Tucker, 61, of Kingsport, who died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Oak Hill Cemetery.Oak Hill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Elaine Warf
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Doris Elaine Warf, 50, passed away suddenly Monday morning (Dec. 4, 2000) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronnie Barnett; her second husband, Jack Warf; sister, Mary Jane Mullins; and father, Paul Davis.
Surviving are three sons, Mike Barnett, Randy Barnett and Chris Barnett all of Big Stone Gap; two daughters, Jackie Warf, Crossbrook, Va., and Karla W. Stidham, Gray; mother, Sybil Davis, Crossbrook, Va.; six brothers, Paul Davis Jr., Virginia Beach, Va., Frank Davis, Pennington Gap, Va., Jerry Davis, Van Cleve, Miss., Phillip Davis and Gerald Davis, both of Crossbrook, Va., and Mike Davis, Kingsport; four sisters, Pam Addison, Blountville, Eleanor Fultz, Bristol, Tenn., Eva May, Charleston, S.C., and Debbie Bishop, Big Stone Gap, Va.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
At her request, her body has been donated, for medical research, to the Quillen College of Medicine.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, Va., with the Rev. James Stidham officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, just prior to the service.
